Honey, please don't preach!
Haryanavis are happy that they would be able to see their favourite rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh in person as he goes around telling people whom to vote for. But whether young voters would get swayed by his charm, only time will tell...
After whipping up half a dozen songs for the biggies of Bollywood, the desi kalakaar has now turned his radar to not-looked-upon-as-a-neat structure of democracy, politics. Or let's put it this way- Tau's party in Haryana, the INLD, has focused their generous attention to Yo Yo Honey Singh. The singer rapper is now asking people to vote for former Haryana CM and INLD founder Devi Lal's party. Now, does this call for an interesting spin, given the fact that the rapper has actually taken the entire Bollywood and the music scene by storm? Will his star status affect the notes of the voters? Will youngsters in Haryana follow the piped piper of the Bollywood film and music industry? Though not a recent phenomenon, many well-known celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Dharmendra to name a few have campaigned for various parties. Does the glitz and glamour really help, youngsters take their pick. Nothing sweet about it
Yo Yo Honey Singh is a phenomenon, who has fan following in the entire country, and now he is supporting INLD by making promotional rap track for the party, he might be soon seen campaigning as well! "I don't think that will change anything for the party," Chetan Gaur, a resident of Sector-2, Panchkula puts it point black. "I would or wouldn't vote for the party only because Honey Singh is supporting it. Public at large is wise now, they know whom to vote and 'work' is the only criteria. Not just because a rap star is telling us to vote, we would do it blindly." Since, Yo Yo has a strong youth-centric fan base, he is touted as someone who can capture their attention as well. Mandeep
Sikri, a hotelier from Ambala, sees him as a crowd puller. "Indeed, he can single-handedly pull a lot of people, especially youngsters to a rally. The question is will this crowd go and vote for the party he is supporting? I am sure people are not blind, they will only vote if the party has done something good or looks promising. Only because Honey Singh is singing 'Haryana is where food comprises milk and ghee… we wouldn't believe him." All that glitters
Whether it is beautiful Mahima Chaudhary or handsome Salman Khan, politicians often bring stars to their rallies to attract public. These stars sing and dance, trying everything possible to woo the voters. This time, INLD is looking at one such shinning star, Yo Yo Honey Singh. Nishant Prasher and his wife Sneha from Sector-21 Panchkula act in Haryavnvi plays and host shows. Sneha is excited that she might soon see her favourite rapper singer in Panchkula or maybe in some remote village in Haryana, but when it comes to voting, "Well, then I am going to use my mind," she laughs out loud. Her husband on the other hand can't understand why the party has roped in a controversial person like Honey Singh. "He has demeaned women in so many tracks, how can he tell us whom to vote for. Even if someone as respectable as Amitabh Bachchan was to support a particular party, I would still read the party's manifesto and see how good or bad they are and then vote," shares Nishant. jasmine@tribunemail.com

A real take on romance
They look radiant in their bright sarees and jewellery even though they don't eat or drink from dawn to dusk. How realistic is the reel Karva Chauth? Celebs speak up…
There she sat, on the terrace, waiting for him to return so that she could look at his face before she sipped water. But little did she know, he too was dying of thirst and wanted to see her as bad. So, after that little coochie cooing, Simran (Kajol) took a good look at Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and broke her Karva Chauth fast. And they lived happily ever after. At least, this is what the famous mush film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaingey showed us. And later on, many other Hindi films followed suit. The undying love of a married woman for her husband blossoms on the day of Karva Chauth. If films like Masti, Biwi No 1, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Judaai are some films that have captured the splendour of Karva Chauth. But it is the real women who can tell us how closely they have related to every scene, how interesting have the found the romanticised idea of Karva Chauth in the entertainment industry. Bigger the better
They are always dressed in their best Kanjivarams saree, they dazzle with diamonds and solitaire and the entire Karva Chauth day they sing and dance, not to forget they are at their romantic best. Punjabi film producer Simran Suri just laughs aloud when she is asked about the reel portrayal of Karva Chauth. "C'mon, it is nowhere close to what we go through. I barely have the time to even get mehndi done, forget about getting into a heavily embroidered saree. But yes, it feels nice to see the actresses singing and dancing for their reel-life husbands. Maybe, I could take inspiration from them." Television, in fact, goes one step ahead by running Karva Chauth for almost 2-3 days. The melodrama that flows on this day is unbelievable. Sonalika Dubey, a TV actress turned singer can never relate to what is shown on screen. She doesn't mind though. "It is like a festival and TV just gives a grand look to it. Since, I have been fasting for almost two years now, I never got to do a single thing that I did on screen Karva Chauth."
At that glitters
Whether it is Karisma Kapoor waiting for Salman Khan to return home to break her fast in Bollywood film Biwi No1 or Sridevi doing the same for Anil Kapoor in Judaai, this is one occasion that has been shown with so much emotion. Film director Karan Johar could only add some richness to the day through lavish sets and opulent dresses. Laughs Sonali Singh Mann, a film actress who married a year back and is now settled in Ambala, "I don't say what they show on screen is far from reality. It is just slightly far fetched, then TV and films are all about exaggeration. I think I will be showing my husband that famous Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan scene from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam for some inspiration." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Make your day!
A game of tambola, walk on the ramp or getting a makeover…you don't need to wonder what to do the entire day and the overstretched evening as the moon plays hide and seek every year on this particular day!
Karva Chauth is one the toughest fasts that women (and now some men too) do and as ever our entrepreneurial Chandigarh wives are all geared to celebrate the day big way. Mehandi,
dressing, make-up in place, you can step into Step 2 Step Dance Studio, Mohali.
Special celebrations would mark rounds of activities like tambola, mehandi
presentation to culminate in a fashion show replete with an entertaining
question/answer round. Not only you get to enjoy activities but also stand a
chance to win titles like beautiful smile, eyes, best catwalk, costumes and
more. Aaiyna, the person behind the show says, "Our only motive is to motivate and honour the fairer segment of society, specially the married woman who are mostly engrossed in their responsibilities towards family and hardly get time for themselves." Dew Drop Cub members and their friends and friends of friends have plans to get together at AB's 26 for a round of games during the day followed by a traditional puja at the house of one of the club member's. Shweta Bhatia and Preeti Chawla have been doing this Karva Chauth bash for past 10 years. "This year too we have interesting activities lined up to while away the time and also listen to katha and do everything traditional," says the duo who has customized picture frames for all who attend their bash. Tempted? If kids at home worry you, head to a party hosted by Anjali Sharma and Tina Kapoor at Vatika Farms near Hallo Majra. These two friends who had the Karva Chauth Queen contest last year too, have expanded and taken in a known anchor to helm the affair that will include fun games, tambola and lucky draws. And while you enjoy the activities, kids can enjoy on bouncy and other entrainments roped in for them. mona@tribunemail.com

DID Super Moms contestant, Mithu Chowdhury, roots for the show and the need for mommies to explore their talent
The stereotypically universal definition of a mother personifies her as the epitome of unconditional love, sacrifice and a perennial source of support. However, in their attempts to fit into the frame of this definition, most mothers ignore their individual capacity to define talent and overlook any opportunity that vents this talent. So, how many talented mommies do you know? The ones who have sacrificed their talent at the altar of motherhood? At first, Mithu Chowdhury's disposition may come across as that of a regular homemaker on a regular day, but there is more to her than meets the eye. The winner of DID Super Moms, season 1, Mithu is a mother of two and she is in her mid thirties. But just as the music plays and she begins to dance, there comes to fore a different aura of hers that is more independent and liberated in so many ways. In Chandigarh, to persuade the womenfolk to audition for the second edition of DID Super Moms, she talks about her passion for dance and her experience on the show. "I was always fond of dancing and that is the main reason I took to Bharatnatyam when I was very young. However, I got married and then there was not much time to practice, especially with kids around," she shares. However, a friend of Mithu informed her about the auditions of DID Super Moms, a dance based reality television show and she was more than keen to participate. "I had not participated in any competition before and that is the main reason why I was a little too scared. Also, my husband is not too fond of dancing and all, so I really had to convince him a lot," she says. Soon after she was done with convincing her husband, Mithu danced her way to the finals of the show. "I think DID Super Moms is a beautiful platform for mothers who love dancing and it helps you grow at a personal level too." Mithu says that while earlier, she was only comfortable with classical dances, like Bharatnatyam, this show gave her the opportunity to learn western forms, which was also a huge challenge for her. "I remember, sometimes I would break down while learning hip hop and other contemporary forms and that was the biggest challenge I faced," she says. Although she roots for classical forms, but she also suggests that it is important for a dancer to be able to do every kind of dance. "My guruji, who taught me Bharatnatyam, is not quite happy with contemporary dances being popularised by these shows and I quite agree, but then it is important for a dancer to know all sorts of dances," she says. When asked about her plans, Mithu shares that she would love to open a dance institute in Hugli. The DID Super Moms season 2 auditions will take place in the city on Oct 12 at Manav Mangal School, Phase 2, Mohali and Sector 10, Chandigarh from 8am onwards. amarjot@tribunemail.com |

You can cop(e) up!
Jasmine Singh Film: Police in Pollywood Director: Sunita Dhir Cast: Bhagwat Mann, Anuj Sachdev, Mani Kapoor, Raj Brar, Sardool Sikander, Sunita Dhir Rating: ** Curiosity kills the cat… sometimes, or let's say, most of the times, it is better to go by certain set adages, rules and statements! Only this time, the cat doesn't get killed in its curious attempt, but injured. Here is how it happens. The eagerness to see the comeback of actor-turned- politician Bhagwant Mann pulls you to watch the Punjabi film Police In Pollywood only to realise all that glitters is not gold. It can be silver or even bronze! The directorial attempt of actress Sunita Dhir can be seen as a sincere effort, but not all sincere efforts clear the litmus test. Police In Pollywood actually is one interesting story of police making a film in an attempt to recover their lost money. But you soon find that the director is actually dealing with three parallel stories. The film written by Parveen Kumar has dialogues coming from Baldev Gill. And now for the problem part, there is no problem with three separate stories in one plot, if only the director could establish a connection among them. Many scenes lack any explanation and bear no connect with the follow up scene. It is the loose ends that fail to generate interest in the film. Given that this is Sunita Dhir's first film, she is applauded for it. Given that she has worked in so many films, a better deal is expected from her. To add, the director has acted well in her own film. Now, all eyes turn to one man, Bhagwant Mann. The reason why you came to watch the film in the first place. The actor-politician doesn't disappoint, his wit and charm is intact. In fact, his plot (we told you there are many sub-plots in the film), draws more laughter than anyone else. Raj Brar with his dead pan expression couldn't have done it better. As for the eye candy of the film, the hero, Anuj Sachdev, he definitely can be admired for his chiseled looks. Anuj has already been noted for his role in Punjabi film Haani. In Police In Pollywood the director could have made better use of him. Mani Kapoor is the actress of the film who is always wanting to eat fish. Now, what the fish is this! Sardool Sikander's small yet interesting role is liked. The film has hummable music. The stars are for Bhagwant Mann, despite this, the film will injure your curiosity to quiet an extent. |

Worth a salute
Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami
Directed by Ravindra Gautam, Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami is an up and coming Hindi film produced by Anurradha Prasad and Abhinav Shukla under the banner of Nautanki Films. The story revolves around two sons, who set out to get their father what he dreamt of all through his life -the ultimate sign of respect. High on thrill and laughter, this film takes the audience through the unbelievable attempt by Shekhar and Subhash Joshi to provide their father an Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami (21-gun salute). Purushotam Joshi is a common man, who fails to earn his bit of appreciation despite being completely honest during his life-long service as a government employee. Joshi's sons are willing to go the extra mile to grant their father his only wish. However, the mystery remains as to whether they’ll succeed.
Low, yet high
The film is bearably good and what I really like is the fact that it is a low budget drama that entertains more than some big-budget films. I think Divyendu Sharma has acted quite well and Anupam Kher is good as
always. Namit Sharma, student Above average fare
It is a nice film, so one can rate it above average. I really like the way a common man's life is highlighted. I like the realism in the
film. Amol Gakhal, student Socially acceptable
I am really fond of films that touch upon any social angle and this film is all about saluting honesty, which is a commendable idea. Also, the film is very interesting and
engaging. Varun Gupta, student (As told to Amarjot Kaur)

Some hits, some misses
Thumbs up to Deepika:
Deepika Padukone has taken geometric prints and pantsuits to an entirely new level with this look. Her shoes are gorgeous, the fit is perfect for her, but we're not really sure how well it works. It looks like she may be heading out to a pajama party rather than rocking a red carpet event. She gets a thumbs-up for trying though!
Falling flat:
While the pleats on the skirt of her dress make it look pretty, the embellishment at the waist sort of takes away from the drop-dead gorgeous red of Mughda Godse's dress. Her hair is pulled back a little too high and while we love the simple V-neck and strap embellishments, this look eventually falls a little flat.
College chic:
Oh Parineeti Chopra! What could have been a stylish casual look is just such a mess. We're big fans of mixing and matching, but those shoes and the cartoon muscle tee are just not doing it for us. The cap adds a casual touch, but the entire look is a little too college chic.
Metallic sheen:
When we first saw this, we thought 'OMG, not more metallics!', but Nargis Fakhri actually manages to look stunning in this piece. We're not fans of the nude heels, as they draw attention away from the dress. But the simple silhouette enhances her gorgeous curves enough for that to be forgiven.
Fun and flirty:
Mixing prints and colours can be dangerous, but Katrina Kaif manages pretty well. The dress is not one of our favourites, but it fits her well and she's kept accessories at a minimum, so it's not an eyesore. We're glad the skirt is a little flared, a pencil dress would not have lent as fun and flirty a vibe as this does.

Brad Pitt's Fury to be dubbed as Fauji
We first heard the news that Brad Pitt's Fury release had been postponed due to the release of Happy New Year. The distributors were vary of Fury missing out on its audience due to the audience thronging to Happy New Year and hence
wisely decided to stay away from competing.
It is now being revealed that Fury will be dubbed as Fauji in Hindi, after the same show in which SRK earned fame as Abhimanyu Rai. As a tribute to the actor, who has portrayed the role of an Army officer in several movies such as Main Hoon Na and Veer Zaara, PVR Pictures has decided to distribute the Hindi dubbed version of the movie as
Fauji.
"Brad Pitt epitomises the essence of a Fauji and hence we have decided to release the dubbed version of Fury as Fauji", said Deepak Sharma the COO of PVR Pictures.
Jennifer Lawrence to turn producer?
Jennifer Lawrence is most definitely a force to reckon with. At this very young age the actress has already achieved great feats including an Academy Award. This young actress who is now gearing up for the release of the third part of the hit book adaptation series The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 recently told a publication that she dreams and wishes to be a producer. And the reason for her to do so is pretty valid and sensible! The actress who is often stormed with scripts, seems to have read many she loves but know that owing to the environment of the industry, it would never find backing to see the light of the day. She was quoted, "I really wanted to just produce. Because I remember when I would read these incredible scripts which would never see the light of the day. Hence I always wanted to be a producer."
Kay Kay shoots despite injury
Actor Kay Kay Menon while shooting for Haider in Pahalgam was injured during a running sequence in the snow. We hear that the actor slipped and had severe internal bleeding in his hamstring. Yet, rather than even taking a few hours off, Kay Kay continued shooting for the film. The actor had a back-to-back schedule due to which he had no time to see a specialist and in fact afterwards had to fly out of India to Sri Lanka to complete shooting for Bombay Velvet. When we contacted, Kay Kay he said, "Yes, it's true but I just couldn't let my hamstring injury mess up schedules for three films. At the time I was shooting for Haider in Kashmir, Bombay Velvet in Sri Lanka and Raja Natwarlal in Mumbai. I just couldn't put so many people under stress by taking time off."
Double celebrations
Ali Fazal is on the seventh heaven these days. With Sonali Cable on the brink of release, Ali already has his kitty full with two promising projects. Just a few days ago his film with Pooja Bhatt opposite Richa Chadha was announced and now Ali is all set for a comic caper alongside veterans like Anupam Kher and Anu Kapoor. Ali will be playing the lead role in Vishwaas Paandya's Baa Baa Black Sheep. Baa Baa Black Sheep is a black comedy and will be directed by Vishwaas Paandya (son of Jayendra Pandya who produced films like Namak Haram and Rang Birangi). "Lots of people call me Baba, on and off the sets. I guess its a remnant of Sanjay Dutt's legacy and me having adorned him for a large part of my life… So it was quite ironic when the movie I was offered was to play the role of Baba, in Baa Baa Black Sheep. It's a dark comedy," says Ali Fazal. The film which goes on floors in December will be shot at a destination away from India. |

So far so good
Actor Harshad Chopda, who is currently seen In the television show, Humsafars, talks about his role and more...
Tell us about your character. I play Sahir Azim Chaudhary. He is a poet by heart but he acts very cold. He has a history, which affected him and changed his personality. He is a mysterious personality. He has a shield around him that makes him someone who is not easily available. How does it feel to get back on TV after two years? It actually feels good. I am glad that I took a break. Now I'm like a blank paper, ready to write a new story. Share your experience on the show with us? It's been great. It actually feels like my first show where I am all inquisitive about things happening, while on the other hand I am composed knowing that I have done this show. So it's a mixed feeling which is contrasting yet nice. Your love interest, Arzoo, will be different from you; so do you believe that opposites attract? I don't know. As far as the show is concerned, yes they are different but they would be similar in a lot many ways. They are strong, egoistic yet vulnerable and emotional. They are different sides to a hologram which when comes together will shine. The character also has a close resemblance to Asad of Qubool Hai. Are you ready for comparisons? See if you want to compare, then you will find thousand reasons of similarity but if you look at it they are two different characters. Also, I feel even when two characters are the same; it all depends on how they are presented. We both are different individuals and will surely present two completely different characters. |
