Ban on sale of liquor

Kalka, October 10
The District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula, has banned the sale of liquor on October 13, 14, 15, 18 and 19 on account of the Vidhan Sabha elections in the district.

A press note issued by Dr SS Phulia, DEO, stated that the sale of liquor has been prohibited at all liquor vends, hotels, restaurants, clubs and other places.

The ban will remain enforced from October 13 (6 pm) to October 15 (6 pm), October 18 (6 am) to October 19 (6 pm).

Besides this, all liquor vends in the rural and urban areas of the district will also remain closed on the said dates. Action will be taken against the violators.

BSP candidate holds public meetings at villages

Kalka, October 10
BSP candidate Satvinder Singh Rana addressed over 12 public meetings in different villages of the Pinjore area here today. Accompanied by youth leaders of the BSP, Rana held a meeting with officials of the Railways and members of a union of the Railway employees at Bharat Nagar. The employees extended support to him at the meeting.

Rana also addressed public meetings at Ambwala, Burjkotian, HMT Colony, Mahadev Colony, Pinjore, Housing Board Colony in Kalka, Dharampur, Bitna, Firozepur Model Town, Manakpur Devi Lal, Devi Shankar Wali Gali, Tipra, Kamla Nagar Kalka and Lower Bazar, Kalka.

Rana appealed to public to vote for him. Promising development of the area, that was ignored by the sitting INLD MLA during his tenure, Rana alleged that Pradeep Chaudhary never raised the problems of the area in the Cabinet. Rana also promised employment for youth, security for women, ‘pucca’ streets and road, proper water supply, and sub-tehsil for Raipur Rani. — TNS

Police recover watches, clothes

Chandigarh, October 10
A wide range of fake branded watches and clothes were recovered by the Cyber Crime Cell of the Chandigarh Police from the two accused who used to sell fake products online.

The duplicate items were purchased from the markets in Delhi and Ludhiana and sold online to buyers by offering discounts.

Police officials said replicas of 735 branded watches of Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Hublot, Cartier, Oak Chopard etc were recovered during the raid at a godown in the Industrial Area on September 25.

Besides, garments, purses, shirts, jackets, shoes of international brands such as Gucci, Prada, Salvatore, Louis Vuitton, Hermes Paris, Armani, Burberry, Zapitos, Diesel, Hublot etc were seized in large numbers.

The Chandigarh Police had received more than eight complaints regarding the fake products through the websites www.watchcartz.com, www.digaaz.com and www.luxecart.com etc.

Theft case: Man alleges police apathy

A resident of Sector 41-A has alleged police apathy stating that no action was taken in a theft case that took place at his house.

The complainant, Harbhajan Singh, alleged that Rs 20,000 and some documents were stolen from his house on June 29 but when he complained to the local police, no action was taken by them.

Singh further alleged that he was even threatened by police officials who claimed that no theft had taken place at his residence.

Singh stated that when his complaint was not registered by the police, he gave a written complaint to the NHRC.

The complainant further alleged that he suspected a resident of Sector 41-A of having committed the theft.

However, later in October, a case under 380, IPC, was registered at the Sector 39 police station. Meanwhile, three more theft cases were registered in the city on Thursday, including two of vehicle theft.

In one of the case, Dr Poornima Sehgal reported that someone has stolen the water meter from the dispensary in Sector 19. A case has been registered.

Man booked for duping Delhi jeweller of Rs 4.5 lakh

The Chandigarh Police have booked a city resident for allegedly duping a Delhi jeweller of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.5 lakh. A gold ring was recovered from the residence of the suspect’s sister in Patiala, said the police.

The suspect, Rajeev Bhardwaj, allegedly placed an order of a gold set at the complainant’s shop a month back. The complainant, Saurabh Golcha, said Bhardwaj also gave him a cheque for Rs 75,000. The cheque, however, bounced, following which Bhardwaj assured Golcha that he will pay the payment in cash on delivery.

When Golcha visited Chandigarh for delivery, the accused allegedly took him to the passport office, stating that his wife worked there and he would pay the cash from her account.

“I waited for Rajeev outside the office for an hour, but he did not come out. When I went inside, I came to know that no woman with the name mentioned by Rajeev worked there,” the complainant told the police.

When Golcha went to the address given by the suspect, the house was locked and the neighbours told him it was vacant for the past many years. Following this, Golcha lodged a complaint at the Sector 34 police station.

Woman robbed in Mohali

Mohali, October 10
A woman was robbed of Rs 80,000 and gold jewellery by two youths in Phase IX here today. Anju Bala of Chandigarh complained to the police that she was going to deposit Rs 80,000 in a State Bank of India branch in the area, when two motorcylcle borne youths approached her and began talking to her. They suddenly snatched her purse besides gold earrings and a ring, she stated.

A case has been registered under Sections 382 and 34 of the IPC.

Delhi Public School-40 register win in cricket tournament

Chandigarh, October 10
In a match of the inter-school (U-17) cricket tournament held between Delhi Public School (DPS), Sector 40, Chandigarh, and Raipur Khurd on the Guru Nanak Public School ground, Sector 36, the former won the match 250 runs.

After winning the toss the DPS elected to bat. The partnership of 167 runs by Aayush Sikka and Jaan Brar helped the DPS put a total of 296 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

While chasing the big total, the Raipur team was bundled out at 47 in 7 overs. Vibhev Mahajan, with his bowling spell of 7 wickets for 6 runs, helped the DPS win the match by 250 runs. —TNS

Basketball Tourney
Punjab, Gujarat enter super league

Patiala, October 10
On the third day of the 28th All-India Postal Basketball Tournament, Punjab Postal Circle team defeated the Orissa Postal Circle team by 2 points in a tough contest (59-57). 

In the last match played yesterday, Odisha defeated Tamil Nadu by 7 points and entered the super league. Tamil Nadu had already qualified for the super league and the other teams who reached the league are Punjab and Gujarat. — TNS
