It was only till the time they were showing it as multiplex or a single screen in your city, you would go watch it and share the reviews on the Facebook page. Now, you are deprived of being the one to have watched Diljit Dosanjh's or Gippy Grewal's first day first show.

For, Punjabi films have expanded and spread their arms into new non-Punjabi territories. More than this, Punjabi films are now going in for a global release, which means a wide international audience, and of course more collection.

This phenomenon is definitely not new, with actors like Harbhajan Mann or Gippy Grewal getting their films released in Canada, England and Australia in the past.

Now, the word is 'worldwide' launch. Does this help the film in any which way is this just another business strategy?

Beyond borders

Even though Punjabi film Sadda Haq had to face a ban in Punjab, the film was not only promoted extensively but also was released worldwide to a great response. Actor-producer Kuljinder Sidhu repeats the feat with his upcoming film Yoddha— The warrior. "Sadda Haq was released in Hong Kong, Austria, France and you would be surprised to know that we received a great response from Italy, which is the fifth biggest market for Punjabi films. Sadda Haq's 80 per cent of the revenue came from overseas and only 20 pre cent from India," says Kuljinder.

For Yoddha, Kuljinder has already received queries from Ireland and UAE. A global market definitely takes the film to an international platform," adds the actor who is promoting his film overseas.

In the recent past films like Jatt James Bond, Punjab 1984, Kirpaan, Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin, Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo among others have seen a worldwide release. Pawan Gill, the producer of Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin, shares the market trend. And while talking about the overseas market, Pawan talks about the places that have a Punjabi presence like Canada, America, UK, Australia and New Zealand. "However, films like Punjab 1984 or Jatt & Juliet got released in Austria, Italy, Germany and South Africa where they have a sizable Punjabi population.

"The worldwide release depends on the demand and how big the film is. If it is a Diljit Dosanjh's film then it could even get a release in Minneapolis."

When it comes to the business part, Pawan adds, 'It works as the rule of the thumb, the distributor is set to gain only 40 per cent, whereas back in India, it is 45 per cent."

Bigger the better

Punjabi films are definitely improving in stature. Many popular names from Bollywood are a part of Punjabi films. The budget has increased and so has the reach. Popular producer Rajan Batra's recent Mere Yaar Kaminey saw a worldwide release. "We are only set to gain from a global release where we have a Punjabi community. Even though some Punjabi films were released in places like Singapore, those, however, didn't get a positive response."

Rajan predicts a totally different trend for the coming times. "Punjabi films will now see a pan-India release barring the south territory. We have already sent our films to Ratlam, Bhopal and it's a matter of time that we add in more places for the launch."

The accidental actor
Ali Fazal, who wowed the audience as Tasawar in Bobby Jasoos, would like to play a sports icon someday, just to re-live his school days
Manpriya Singh
Ali Fazal
sportsman spirit: Ali Fazal

Economics, mathematics, hockey, basketball; almost every academic and extra curricular activity fit into Ali Fazal's spectrum, save for drama, theatre and acting.

Ironically, it all started with a broken arm. "I broke my arm during one of the routine sports activities in school and couldn't play any sport for a while. That incident literally changed my life as it shifted my attention to debating and theatre and such activities," he laughs while recalling his growing up years in the Doon School, Dehradun.

The shift to Mumbai also happened in pursuit of higher studies. "I came to Mumbai for college, later." Appearances in TV commercials gave way to cameos and before he knew Three Idiots happened.

The Joy Lobo of the hit film, made an impact even with a brief role. "Life changed after that film as it got me recognition. That's how I happened to be roped in Shah Rukh Khan's production venture Always Kabhi Kabhi." A film that perhaps did him more damage than good, as it coincided with the crucial two years after the release of Three Idiots.

Bull's eye

The role that he would like to term close to his heart would be that of Tasawar in Bobby Jasoos. The very movie that he has always admitted to have not been keen on initially. Till the wait for the likes of his dream role happens, there's no missing out on opportunities. "My dream role would be like that of Robert De Niro in Raging Bull." He adds, "Or, I would also be keen on a biopic. Probably on some boxer." Well, Mary Kom has already been taken and Mike Tyson is still up for grabs!

Dramatic turns

It's been a busy day for the actor, who's looking forward to his immediate next Sonali Cable apart from a string of upcoming releases. "In Sonali Cable I play Raghu and will be seen opposite Rhea Chakraborty. It's quite a hard- hitting drama. A story where these guys run a cable centre and how they fight these big corporations."

There's also Khamoshiyan from the Bhatt camp. "It is psychological thriller and a very unusual script. The film is a boy's journey from narcissism to selflessness."

While there have been no specific reference points for the character, "I did see The Shining starring Jack Nicholson to get into the whole frame of mind."

Looking ahead

In the pipeline is also a project that his contemporaries would give an arm and a leg to be in, a role in the franchise Fast and Furious. "I have already finished shooting for The Fast and Furious 7. Getting to work with the whole gang was good fun. I learnt a lot on the project." Immediately, Sonali Cable it is!

The derma roller technique is emerging as an effective solution for face scars
Dr Alka Dogra

There was a time when only those who were born beautiful were 'certified' beauties, but nowadays, with modern techniques, it has become possible to look better and to modify imperfections, if any. But, it is also important that we understand the nuances of each technique before going in for it. One such technique in vogue is the derma roller technique.

The derma roller is used for acne scars, atrophic scars, chicken pox scars, burn scars, traumatic scars, post-stitch scars and striate atrophic. This technique has picked up pace of late. A lot of youngsters and middle-aged people are looking forward to it. A new derma roller is used on every patient and is discarded after each use. Usually, the roller used is 1.5 mm needle size. But, it is a slightly painful procedure. So, local anesthetic becomes essential before the process.

The skin surface is anesthetised with Dilocane or Lindocane; the under occlusion surface though is very apprehensive. Its ring blocks can be given. Scars cannot be improved hundred percent but improvement is remarkable, reaching levels of 30-40 per cent in most cases in this simple OPD technique.

Protection from sun post treatment is extremely important. Slight ooze or bleed stays for two to three days after the treatment. Post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation is to be avoided by the use of sunscreen and a lightening cream. The other name for this procedure is micro-needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT). This is a minimally-invasive procedure, which leads to smoothening of scarred skin with the effect of micro needles.

Keeping the festival in mind, Tressed Up chain of salons has launched some convenient services for women. Mahira Khan
Madhuri mania: Mahira Khan (R)

While people know much about how Bollywood Diva Madhuri Dixit inspired Pakistani actress, Mahira Khan, to take on acting as a profession, it is not known to many that the director of Humsafar Sarmad Sultan Khoosat is also a huge admirer of the Bollywood star too. Such was his obsession with Madhuri Dixit that during the shoot of Humsafar, Sarmad began calling Mahira 'Ganga', which was Madhuri's character's name in Ram Lakhan. Every time Mahira would give a good shot, Sarmad would exclaim 'Waah Ganga Waah'! Little did Sarmad know that he would start a trend. The word spread like fire and everyone on the set started addressing Mahira as Ganga. Sarmad, upon learning this was amused and announced to all that Ganga is a name that he has given to Mahira and that only he reserves the right to call her that. Incidentally, Mahira also decided to take up acting as a profession only after watching Madhuri Dixit's performance in Ram Lakhan.

Time to celebrate

Jacqueline’s beauty secrets

Actress Jacqueline Fernandez is blessed with flawless skin and she gives credit to home remedies especially curd and honey.

"I also use ice packs for my face and eyes. I wrap ice cubes in thin muslin or tissue and then place them gently on cheeks and eyes," she added.

Jacqueline, who is also the brand ambassador of The Body Shop, was here to unveil the festive collection of Britain's retail house and give scholarship to 10 NGO kids on behalf of the brand.

Giving an insight to her perfect body, she said: "Take care of yourself by eating right, sleeping right and exercising regularly! These are the only rules I swear by. If you follow this religiously and use the right products, your skin and hair will thank you."

Modi okays his biopic starring Paresh Rawal

It had been reported sometime back that veteran actor Paresh Rawal might act in a biopic on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it now seems that the former Gujarat CM has given his blessings to the project.

Sources close to Paresh reveal that all the necessary permissions required to go ahead with the film have been acquired by the film team and an official announcement is to be made soon regarding the biopic.

It seems that Modi was quite pleased with the idea of a biopic when he was approached by Rawal, who will also produce the film.

Defying the system

Karan Johar's long-delayed comedy-drama Ungli's official trailer is finally out! Starring Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam, Angad Bedi and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles, the film promises to explore different territory, unlike the usual fare from Dharma Productions.

The trailer gives a glimpse into the plot that includes a gang of five friends who decide to take matters into their own hands, to set the city right with the motto "It's time to show them the middle finger".

A new delicacy

Kannada star Diganth will feature opposite newcomer Anushka Ranjan in cinematographer-turned-director Binod Pradhan's romantic comedy The Wedding Pulav.

The film went on floors last month in New Delhi. Musical duo Salim-Suleiman Merchant will compose the music for the film. Actors like Rishi Kapoor, Satish Kaushik and Upasna Singh will also star in the film.

Celebrating movies

Actor Sidharth Malhotra has shot a promo for the 16th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) set to start in October 14.

Urging fans to celebrate the movies at the fest, the Ek Villain star tweeted Thursday: "Come celebrate the movies with us at the #MumbaiFilmFestival2014 starting 14th October, just finished promo shoot of#MAMI2014 @mumbaifilmfest."

Missing the mark
We take a look at what our leading Bollywood ladies wore this week...

Heart broken

We seem to have caught Shraddha Kapoor in between her evening nap, or on her way to the gym! For a gym look, it's not so bad, but if she's wearing this as an outfit, we're disappointed Shraddha! The hearts on the tracks are tacky and the white tee is boring.

Cut that out!

Sonakshi Sinha would have looked ready for the autumn, if the bottom half of her dress was missing. The sudden appearance of the cut-outs looks terrible and the denim jacket doesn't add to the appeal. Her perfect pout do manage to salvage the look a little bit though.

Getting it wrong

We had to look twice to make sure this wasn't a Brothers Grimm tale. We really don't like this look on Tabu, from the colour that washes her out, to the ill-matched brocade jacket and blue piping on her otherwise pretty flats. Her wispy hair makes the entire look worse.

Beach candy?

Yami Gautam looks like a real beach babe, if only she didn't have the sweater on her arm. We do not like the sandals, but her top and pretty shorts make up for it. Her hair falls a bit flat on the fashion scale, but we're going to forgive her for that this time around.

A fruitful innings
Javed Akhtar clocks 50 years since stepping into Mumbai

It was on this day 50 years ago that Javed Akhtar had stepped foot in Mumbai from Gwalior to pursue his creative dreams.

The now acclaimed lyricist and writer recently participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachch Bharat Abhiyan on Gandhi Jayanti at the Mumbai Central station to sweep the platforms.

Speaking of the experience, Javed said: "It is always a pleasure to be part of any campaign for a better nation. And Narendra Modiji's Swachch Bharat Abhiyan was definitely a wonderful idea. I happily supported it."

Pointing out at a significant personal historical link of his past to the clean-India campaign, he said: "It was 50 years ago on October 4, 1964 that I left my hometown Gwalior to reach Mumbai by a train that took me to Mumbai Central. And now, just two days short of the day, I had arrived in Mumbai 50 years ago I was at the same place as part of a clean-Indian campaign."

He feels the turnout could have been better in support of the clean India campaign.

"We talk of a clean Indian, corruption-free India. But we can't even keep the road in front of our homes clean. We say, 'Let the government do it.' Why must the government be expected to do everything? Don't we as responsible citizens have a responsibility towards society?" He feels it's time to take matters into our own hands.

"It's time we realised that we are the government. No on else is going to do it for us. We see big shiny malls with dirt and filth right outside it. We only talk about change. But we don't want to do anything to bring a change," he said.

Born to Jan Nisar Akhtar, an Urdu poet and lyricist and Safia Akhtar, a teacher and writer, Javed's tryst with the world of words was as though predestined. —IANS
