Case studies
While the traditional tutors flanked by a blackboard et al qualify for moral sciences and subject theories, practical lessons come from real life success stories. Don't they? Coming Teacher's Day, how about a lesson or two straight from the people who have made it high enough in life to be sitting in The Lower House? Or, have made it loud enough in life to be having everyone dancing to their tunes? A free period just in jest!
Quiet a presence!
On a serious note: He is the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full term. The doctorate in economics from Oxford University steered the country out of a global recession when the world was badly hit in 2008, when the world leaders came calling to consult him on economic matters during the disturbed times. Not to forget the 123 nuclear deal. He can certainly and seriously teach us everything there is to learn in economics. "His policies and philosophies are a must read for any student of economy," shares Abhinav Agarwal, a B Com graduate. On a fun note: How to keep quiet. Just quiet. Still quiet. Not be a part of the mud slinging around, not respond to criticism, not even to the bureaucracy of politics that won't let him work. He can just keep quiet and calm through everything. Keep calm and be like Dr Manmohan Singh.
Singularly successful
On a fun note: Are the men folk shouting out loud? How to stay single and successful! Someone goes as far as, "Had he stayed married, he would not have been able to inculcate this fearless persona." Honestly, while there are countless gags on Sonia, Rahul and Manmohan, there are no jokes about Narendra Modi. Not really. On a serious note:
How to push past in the distant past. His marital status, the communal tag…How to rub clean your image and move ahead. How to just have a nation of a billion plus rooting for you. There's a lot we can learn from our incumbent PM. Opines Rahul Gupta, founder, Teach A Child Foundation, "Coming from a small village to being the PM, to be that visionary to run bullet trains and creating smart cities in the country is a great example to take inspiration from."
No work, no play
On a fun note: OK, my mother is the principal so I need not be of any use to anybody. Literally! My previous generations worked and I need not do it. "Of course we can learn a lot from the biography of Rahul Gandhi. If there ever be any. That is how to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth," laughs Mehtaab, a law student. On a serious note: There is nothing serious we can learn from Rahul Gandhi. Period. Just in case you manage squeezing a lesson out of his life, God bless!
Luck by chance On a serious note: Films, reality shows and Parliament. She shuttles out of one and into the other. For sure, she can teach a thing or two on how to multi-task. "As a character artiste she is as popular as an actor. That's a feat. Even though we don't think of her as a seasoned politician, she has made it to Parliament by blowing tough competition away. Another feat," says Sidak Mahajan, English honours student, Panjab University. On a fun note:
How to get lucky. Winning by a margin of as many as 70, 000 votes is not a joke. You got to be lucky. "She has actually been the wild card entry in the reality show of all time, called the Indian politics," she laughs.
Badmaash company
On a fun note: How to be the bad boy with a golden heart. How to have a list of most desirable exes. And yes, how to come to blows? On a serious note:
The quintessential playboy of B-town, the spin doctor managed to reinvent himself just when his career was fading, love life wasn't working, and he was in news for all the wrong reasons. And yes, how to be generous and get talked about for it. Other B-town actors can learn a lesson here.
Disconnecting people
On a fun note: With due respect to the image of humility, he is literally falling out with people. The Gandhi family, the Kapoor family, Amar Singh ...In between there was strong news of a fallout with Shah Rukh Khan. Huh! Did we leave anybody out? Err… Rekha. No wonder even his son has been signed on for a cellular campaign meant to connect with people and not him. On a serious note:
Working through his seventies, he has redefined old-age in India. "One big lesson that we can learn from his life is to never stop at anything," says Raisa Kaur, MCM DAV student. Never stop taking lessons, from people good or bad, celebrated or in famous. Everyone has a lesson to teach. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Bollywood may seem to be a far-fetched dream for the ones who don't have a sugar daddy in the industry, but those, who feed their dreams with the flames of passion, find a way anyhow.

"My mother was Sanjay Dutt's junior in school and I met him at one of the parties, and I told him about my desire to become an actress," says Anindita, who was in her early teens at that time. " Sanjay Dutt asked my mother to keep me away from the industry. After eleven years, I am acting in a film that is being made under his production banner," she laughs. Though Manyata and Sanjay Dutt were quite shocked to know who was the lead actress for their film Hasmukh Pighal Gaya. Well begun "My parents, especially my mother has been a great support and she moved in with me when I decided to shift to Mumbai," shares this 26-year-old. Anindita who graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi. Her first brush with popularity came through a series of commercials, which, as she says, proved to be lucky for her. "Commercials are a good way of getting noticed, only that one has to be choosy,” she says. Star studded Anindita has two films lined up. Agony & ecstasy
While doing his bachelors in Nakodar, running around on his bicycle, Harvinder Kaler was a content boy; certain that there would be a bungalow, luxury cars and more … all waiting for him…he just had to work hard towards it!
He picked up singing because he loved to learn, sing and know music. That he turned a singer with a huge fan following is a bonus. Popular as Kanth Kaler, this singer known for his sad, romantic tracks, is out with a new album Fanaa… With 12 albums now, live shows around the world, playback singing in Punjabi movies, Kanth is still a content man and stays close to his roots in hometown Nakodar. The lure of fame, money and fast paced life is still struggling to catch up with him! His latest album, which was launched in Chandigarh on Wednesday, took close to a year-and-half to complete. Kanth shares, "It does take me more than a year for I am selective about my songs, the lyrics as well as music." While, those in love with his sad, romantic tracks, Kanth already has them on his side; Fanaa takes a step towards winning the audience who are in love with popular filmy music. Eight songs in total, you will find different moods and styles… Fanaa is a peppy love song, Biba Putt in a mischievous tone, Dunia is from his staple genre and Mundri comes from his college days. "My friend Surinder Samra would sing Mundri, a song that he had written and it was always a hit. I thought of bringing it back," says Kanth who won various awards in college festivals. The music in Fanaa is given by his younger brother Kamal Kaler, and Kanth is pleased at the initial response he has received. "Those who found me poignant are happy at my evolved style." The music has digital beats, and also traditional instruments like tumbi, sarangi, dhol in some of the songs. Just back from Canada, where he shot two of the songs Dunia and Neendan, and had live shows, Kanth feels blessed by the love of the audience that has come his way. "I have done shows in UAE, Italy and more in Europe and major parts of America and Canada. I feel people there are more culturally connected than here in Punjab. It's heartening to get such an amazing response." With Punjabi singers making waves in Bollywood, Kanth is happy at the pace of his journey. "Singing for me is not just my bread and butter but also food for the soul. And I am happy playing in my field." As for Punjabi music scene, "It's kind of sad that for a country rich in classical heritage youngsters are happy listening to mind numbing beats. I hold both singers and listeners guilty of this. Very little good music is offered to youngsters. And listeners should also move ahead and encourage soulful numbers." Kanth is compositing songs for Punjabi films and enjoying the process as much as he likes going back to his guru RP Rana and keeping on with the riyaaz. "I am grateful to Madan Jalandhari Ji, who got me my first song Hun teri nigah badal gai. When I had no money to travel to Chandigarh to record my first song, not only did he arrange for it all but also kept encouraging me…Teri awaaz ch kuch hai…tu kuch zaroor karenga (there is something in your voice, you will do something big someday)." It's important to dream and you need someone to guide you to something big, believes Kanth. In
his case it was Madan Jalandhari who became instrumental. Both have continued the association, with Madan Jalandhari penning a song for Fanaa too. "As long as you have the right intention, are ready to work hard and focused, you sure will realise your dreams," signs off the singer.

watch Madhu Sharma Dining out is a happening concept in today's world, be it a family, social, official, business or corporate event, as can be appreciated with the fast-growing hotel industry. But, this culture of dining out or even ordering for 'home deliveries', has gradually given rise to a new dilemma of how to balance healthy dining with the compulsions or obligatory responsibilities of social dining, without compromising on one's long-term health consequences. We know all restaurant food is mostly laden with the undesired fats, carbs and sodium - the three musketeers acting against one's long term health. So, does that mean you have to deprive yourself of all these social activities and outings? Well, no. You can still enjoy going out without compromising on your health, provided you act judiciously and practice healthy eating. Yes, first of all you need to be motivated enough and have a good will power to choose wisely. Then go ahead, keeping in mind these useful tips: Firstly, do not set out on a totally empty stomach. Fill up partially, with a light, healthy snack like some salad or soup or perhaps a bowl of fruit salad. Above all, don't forget that a regular good session of any physical work out, be it a brisk walk or any sport or even hitting the gym, can balance the indulgences you might love to give in to occasionally. The foodies Bringing forth try-worthy flavours from the globe is Sector 26’s Whistling Duck Somya Abrol What is it about simplicity that beckons the heart? Could it be the soothing absence of frills, the calmness of bare existence or the comfort of building a character that's stripped of all embellishment? Sitting on wooden chairs and tables at Whistling Duck, such thoughts are involuntarily welcomed. The food too, though gathered from all curves of the globe in a dainty menu, stays true to your meet-cute with the restaurant. For the ones who have already stumbled upon Whistling Duck, perched in the back lane of Sector 26, it's imperative that we mention their karela salad, Quirky Karela. We know how unappetising the thought of karela can be for a majority of North Indians, but this variant of the karela—deep fried karela (bitter gourd) rings with raw vegetables, in a sweet-sour mango dressing— is worth every bite. Before the bitterness of the bitter gourd hits your palate, the cucumber and onions gladly interfere, leaving a tangy hint after every mouthful. The credit, as we discovered later, goes solely to the head chef of the restaurant, Chef Richa. The starters we could get our fingers on were Guacamole & Ash Coated Chevre in Phyllo Cups and the Dak Bulgogi. While phyllo cups are not the simplest bake to master, we found the version at Whistling Duck a little too floury, especially when bitten into in the absence of the filling. The filling too, as a matter of fact, left a bitter aftertaste. Now, we don't know if the chevre (goat cheese) wasn't in the mood to please or (most likely) the avocado wasn't sufficiently ripe before hitting the blender. The starter, basically, was a pretty, pretty girl till she opened her mouth. The second starter, however, more than made up for her words. The Dak Bulgogi—Korean chicken picattas in sweet and spicy barbeque sauce—is beautifully enveloped in the deep barbeque sauce, staying true to Korean flavours. For the main course, we delved into the Chicken Rendang Curry and the Gnocchi with Spinach. They do, however, offer other interesting options like the Vietnamese Prawn Topaz Curry, Himachali Madra, Hyderabadi Khatti Dal and Birbali Kofta. The Chicken Rendang Curry is a typical celebratory dish from Indonesia, and yes, it is a celebration in the mouth too— just as the heavy flavours of red chili, lemon grass and spices hit you, steamed rice save the day by neutralising the palate; the papaya salad on the side lends a refreshing break time and again. And then came the gnocchi—the simplistically perfect, chewy balls, like gorgeous bits of the moon sitting pretty on a bed of sautéed spinach. The bare flavours of all of this dish's ingredients—porcini mushrooms, potato, mascarpone cheese and sage —is what make this dish appeal to your soul. The one hurdle we got entangled in, however, was the fuzzy-mouthed feeling after consuming that amount of semi-cooked spinach. For the uninitiated, it is the oxalic acid in spinach, which when reacts with calcium in the teeth, leads to this dry-fuzzy aftereffect. This probably could be avoided by letting the spinach spend more time on the burner. Despite various disagreements with the stomach, we decided to end the meal with Banoffee Brownie. And, it managed to hit the right spot — as the twirl of caramel initiates the waltz on your tongue, the crumbly brownie decides to take the lead. And, you surrender; whole-heartedly.

We can only hope that this will provide an impetus for more people to come to watch this story and be inspired. Mohit wants a baby girl
Maverick filmmaker and underdog achiever Mohit Suri has proved with Ek Villain that he can set the cash registers ringing even without the Bhatts. However, he returns to the family banner for cousin Emraan Hashmi's next with Vidya Balan. He discusses his next love story, opens up about wife Udita's pregnancy, and talks figures.
Happy space I'm about to become a father and I have to be more responsible now. My wife Udita (Goswami) and I had a minor tiff and she left for a holiday alone. She was mountaineering, rafting and skydiving when she discovered that she was pregnant. I want a daughter, Udita wants a son. If it's a boy, they will both gang up against me (smiles). I'm in a happy space. Danger zone People ask me to ride on a safe ticket, but I won't. Whenever I have listened to unsolicited advice I have made films like Crook. I was told not to make a dark love story like Aashiqui 2 because only happy love stories like Student Of The Year work. I love flirting with danger. The Bhatt style I know they wouldn't have chosen to make Ek Villain, I don't think they liked that film much. After Ek Villain, the Bhatts wanted me to do a remake of Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin or Sadak but I stuck to Hamari Adhuri Kahani, a story waiting to be told. It's about a woman who finds love but sadly, after marriage. Human values Vidya has an extramarital affair in the film. But you can love a person without being physically involved. The film has a lot of human values involved. Some people come and touch your life so strongly that you can't evict them from your system. Casting Vidya You connect to her at a personal level when you talk about human values. She's perfect for the role. She has to look attractive. She is anyway losing weight.
