Phones keep players off the game
Chandigarh, September 3 A cross-section of players was observed chatting and playing games on their phones instead of cheering their fellow players on the field. Most of these players belong to sub-junior and junior categories. Experts stress that the players sitting outside the field or waiting for their turn to play should focus on their fellow players’ game and try to learn from their mistakes. Observation of mistakes is believed to be the best way to learn. “Players are least bothered to observe performance of their fellow players playing in the same event. During our times, we used to observe the players and learn the basics of the game from them. However, nowadays, only one out of 10 does the same,” said Harneek Singh, a table tennis coach. The same scenario was witnessed during an inter-school cricket championship. Young players were seen playing video games instead of concentrating on the field. Putting an instance forward, in the same tournament, very less teams had posted a healthy total or chased down a good total. “Lack of concentration among the youth has led to such circumstances,” said coaches. “We cannot force players to keep a track or observe moments of their fellow players. We do tell them to do so. However, certain players take the advice while many drop it,” said Kulbushan a coach. The same situation was witnessed at volleyball and kabaddi courts, where players preferred their phones over watching the game. “Earlier, we had no options but to observe and cheer our fellow players. Nowadays, every child owns a phone and we cannot stop them from bringing it to the grounds,” said another coach. |
