Homoeopathic is safe treatment as its medicines are in extremely diluted quantities and there are no side effects. The non-toxicity of these medicines makes these a good choice for treatment of children. Everyone and every family should have homoeopathic self-care remedy kit with vials of pellets in 30c potency at home. Self-care is recommended for acute self-limiting conditions such as occasional cold, simple headache, stomach ache, menstrual cramps, minor injuries and emotional upsets. In such cases you can get quick relief from the symptoms. Homoeopathic medicines are selected for treatment of individual symptoms and their causes rather than disease itself. More complicated, serious and acute emergencies such as infections with fever and all chronic disorders required treatment under trained homoeopathic practitioner.

However, a first aid box of few common medicines should be kept at home. Here are some such medicines given with their prescribing symptoms which can be given in acute ailments.

Arnica

This is first-aid medicine for sports injuries, minor road accidents, fall, shock, sprained joints, injury of back with lameness and soreness. The injured part becomes black and blue due to extravasations (leakage of fluid) of capillaries. There is no bleeding or tearing of part.

Calendula

It is especially helpful for cut and lacerated wounds. Diluted calendula Q should be locally applied over the open wound after cleaning. It takes away the local pain and soreness.

Aconite

Aconite is suited for problems of sudden exposure to very cold weather or intense hot weather. The symptoms may include pain, fever, anxiety, fear or any type of inflammation. The suddenness of problem is the most prescribing symptom. Symptoms can happen after few hours of exposure.

Belladonna

It is great remedy for fever, especially in children. Symptoms include a red face, hot and shiny with high fever. Feet are cold. There is continuous dry burning heat in head with pulsation of carotids. In infants it can be convulsions from high fever.

Chamomilla

It is a remedy for infants especially when a child is restless and irritable during teething. Or there is continuous moaning and crying. It may be due to colic, ear pain, toothache or sore throat. The pain is often unbearable and child wants to be cuddled. Chamomilla is also useful in menstrual cramps in oversensitive, impatient, irritable women.

Gelsemium

This is useful medicine in acute headaches. During a violent headache a patient often feels dizziness and blurred vision with headache. The headaches are so violent that patient is completely exhausted and can only lie down.

Colocynth

It is routine remedy for colic. Symptoms include severe abdomen pain. Pain mostly comes in paroxysms that grow in intensity.

Ipecacuanha

This medicine is useful for ailments associated with presence of constant nausea. There is a constant feeling of vomiting or immediately after vomiting, instead of any relief, a feeling to vomit again. The stomach disorder may be caused after eating rich food, or foods like pork, pastry, candy or ice-cream.

Podophyllum

It is a very useful medicine for summer diarrhoea. Symptoms include frequent, copious, watery stool. There is much flatus and spluttering. Abdomen is so sore that patient cannot endure pressure. Prolapsed anus with copious diarrhoea in children is often cured by podophyllum.

Crataegus oxyacantha

This medicine should always be kept at home if there are old people with heart ailments such as palpitation, angina pectoris, hypertrophy of heart, or valvular diseases. It is a positive heart tonic and very helpful in sudden heart pains from coronary artery blockage. A dose of 10-15drops (maximum 40 drops) of crataegus Q in half glass of water will clear the attack in few minutes.
