Hospital launches ‘Care for Grain’ scheme for poor farmers
Banur, August 22 Being a first-of-its-kind scheme launched by the hospital, senior oncologist and chairman of the hospital Barjinder Singh said: “With this scheme, we have gone back to the age-old barter system so that nobody should suffer from any problems in the absence of medical services for want of money.” He said the hospital aims to provide the best medical treatment to the poor and that too within the budget of patients. A person, under this scheme, could pay back the cost of treatment by bringing grains, he said. “But a stipulated time period will be set for them to provide the same to the hospital so that he or she can arrange the food grain well in time. Under the scheme, a patient can take treatment for any number of times. They can also pay in cash as well whenever they have money with them,” the doctor added. |

Salary not paid, HMT staff hold protest
Kalka, August 22 The road show caused traffic disruption on the highway for over 50 minutes. School buses and tourist vehicles remained stranded in the jam during the protest. They raised anti-management slogans during the road show. The employees also burnt an effigy of the management. The empoyees of the HMT are sitting on a dharna since July 30. There is a resentment among hundreds of employees of the Machine Tools Plant of the HMT, Pinjore , as they have not been getting their salaries for the past 11 months. The tractor division and machine tool unit of the HMT is working under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The government has extended retirement age of employees of the tractor division from 58 to 60. However, the retirement age of employees working with the machine tools unit has not been increased. The emplyoees of the machine tools division have urged the Central Minister of Heavy Industries to provide a revival package to their division and release of their pending salaries. |
Snatching, theft cases Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, August 22 The police arrested Pankaj and a juvenile for their involvement. The crime branch of the UT police received information that a person identified as Pankaj was involved in several cases of snatching and vehicle theft registered with various police stations of the city and he could be apprehended near/around the BDO office, Najabgarh, Delhi. A team of the crime branch headed by Sub Inspector Krishan Kumar was sent to Delhi along with the informer where the team succeeded in apprehending Pankaj, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, on the identification of the informer. With his arrest, seven cases of snatching and one case of vehicle theft have been worked out with the recovery of seven snatched gold chains and one stolen Pulsar motorcycle. Besides, two country-made pistols .32 bore alongwith nine live cartridges were also recovered from him which were kept by him in a Jhuggi near Bapu Dham Colony, Sector26, Chandigarh. A separate case of Arms Act has been registered against him at the Sector 26 police station in this regard. On further investigation, Pankaj disclosed that he had kept a gold chain with his friend who was a Juvenile, which he snatched from a woman from Sector 35-D, Chandigarh. He further disclosed that his friend was residing at Madrasi Colony, BDC, Sector-26, Chandigarh. Acting upon the information, a juvenile was also apprehended from Madrasi Colony, BDC, Chandigarh, as Pankaj identified him and the gold chain was recovered from his possession. |

Youth’s body found hanging from tree
Chandigarh, August 22 The victim was identified as Radha Ram Sharma, a resident from Bihar. He was working as a labourer. The police said the incident came to light when a colony dweller went to answer nature’s call. The dweller found the victim hanging from a tree. He raised the alarm following which the police was called. The police team rushed him to General Hospital at Sector 6, Panchkula, where he was declared brought dead. The police managed to identify the victim by making calls his mobile. His father was contacted and informed about the incident. No suicide note was found from the spot. — TNS |

Football meet from today
Chandigarh, August 22 A total of eight teams from the Indian Air Force will participate in the meet. The teams are divided into two pools. CAC (Central Air Command), TC (Training Command), MC (Maintenance Command) and Southern Air Command (SAC) will be in the Pool A. Western Air Command (WAC ), EAC (Eastern Air Command), South Western Air Command (SWAC) and Air Head Quarter (AHQ) will remain in the Pool B. The organizers will shortlist the Air Force football team for the forthcoming Inter-Services Football Championship, 2014-15, and the Durand Cup. — TNS |

In the match played at St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, the GNPS team defeated Vivek High School, 35–6. After maintaining momentum in the first two quarters with 7-0 and 2-0 score, respectively, the winning team went full throttle in the third quarter and sealed it in its favour at 20-4. In the last quarter, the winning side played defensive but managed to gain lead with 6-2. Gurleen shone for the GNPS by winning majority of points for her team. For Vivek High School, Kuleen reduced the winning margin. At the same venue, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Sector 38, defeated AKSIPS, Sector 45, 16-4. The winning side blanked their rivals in the first three quarters with 6-0, 2-0 and 4-0 score. However, the last quarter ended in a draw with both the teams scoring 4-4. For the winning side, Parminder scored the major share whereas for the losing side, Ekampreet and Anbhu collected most points. In another match, played on the courts of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, Saupin’s School, Sector 32, beat Tribune Model School Sector 29, 28-2. The winning side posted 4-0, 6-0, 8-1 and 10-1 scores over the four quarters with Shreya collecting the most points (10) for the team. For Tribune Model School, Sneha won both the points. In a boys’ category match, played at The New Public School, Sector 18, Vivek High School, Sector 38, overpowered St Peter’s School, Sector 37, 22-4. For Vivek High School, Sehaj shot most (four) baskets. In the second match, Gurukul Global School, Mani Majra, posted a 22-4 win over the RIMT World School, Mani Majra. The team won the first three quarters 6-0, 6-2 and 10-0. However, it lost the last one 0-2. In the third match, Guru Harkrishan Public School, Sector 38, defeated The Millennium School, Mohali, 22-2. Cricket: Atul Jaswal guides Saupin’s School to victory
Chandigarh, August 22 Atul Jaswal’s 41 runs off 28 balls and an all-round performance by Aryan Bhatia, who scored 21 runs and took three wickets while conceding 10 runs, helped Saupin’s School register a nine-wicket win over their rivals. Batting first, St Stephen’s team posted 62 runs in the scheduled 20 overs with Sidharth and Prabhneet Singh contributing 16 runs each. For the bowling side, both Aryan Bhatia and Atul Jaswal bowled a tight spell and claimed three wickets each. Chasing the target, Saupin’s side posted 64 runs with Atul Jaswal slamming 41 runs and Aryan Bhatia chipping in with a 21-run knock. In another match, an unbeaten 55-run knock by Tanmay helped St Kabir School, Sector 26, post an 80-run victory over Ashiana Public School. Batting first, the St Kabir team scored 144 runs at the loss of three wickets with Tanmay charging the score. He was supported by Shivang Bhatnagar, who contributed with 39 runs. In reply, Ashiana Public School was all out for 64 runs with Ishan and Gurvaran leading the score chart with 13 and 12 runs, respectively.
