Errors not regretted!
Manpriya Singh

What happens when Shakespeare's Comedy Of Errors gets a Punjabi twist? We have a film called Double Di Trouble. And, with Bollywood actor Dharmendra, leading the pack, the fun multiplies manifold

Shakespeare's plot crash landed in Punjab and the vernacular interpretation followed.

Hell hath no confusion as director Smeep Kang chanced upon Comedy Of Errors. The trailors sound promising and the cast quite upbeat.

In the upcoming Double Di Trouble, Shakespeare's well known play gets a local twist when a father-son duo discover their mirror images in a different city and what ensues is absolute confusion. As of now, the presence of Dharmendra, stirred enough commotion.

It must have been homecoming in several ways, having done double roles in as many as 12 films in Bollywood. "Punjabi da apna hi swaad hunda yaar," he shares on the language he has grown up speaking, while in Chandigarh, for the music and application launch of the film. "I had been waiting for a long while to be able to do something in Punjabi film and if this film is accepted by the audience, we will make more and more Punjabi films," he shares on a serious note in between the conversation heavily peppered with Punjabi humour.

It's been five decades in cinema, but the greed for good characters hasn't died yet. Laughs Dharmendra, "The moment I see camera, I feel so young that all these youngsters take a backseat." Well, the youth sidelined and perhaps overshadowed in the process is Gippy Grewal, who, first shares his happiness over having shared screen space with the legend. "He has done a huge favour to the film by being a part of it."

In the comedy banking on double roles, he plays the equally clueless son and joining the onscreen father-son duo is Gippy's ever present partner in crime Gurpreet Ghuggi. "I have always taken pride in knowing almost all the difficult words and phrases of typical Punjabi language and I have always used them in my films so that the children go and ask their fathers the meaning of those phrases. But after having worked with Dharmendra sir, I myself got to learn so many words and phrases that I didn't know of," he shares on how even years of spoken Hindi in Bollywood have not affected his love for mother tongue.

The film has been extensively shot in Mumbai and Punjab, because, "There's no point in taking Dharmendra sir and shooting with him in California," jokes Ghuggi, while adding, "He is a lion of Punjab and ought to be captured on the soil of Punjab." We are sure the audience is looking forward to what follows.

Folk and filmy

Comedies are hardly ever known to rely on hit music to keep the cash registers ringing. Any queries on the music take a backseat against the star cast. Shares Gippy Grewal, "The songs in the film have been rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and a few have been sung by me and others as well. As and how the flavour of the song demanded, we have roped in voices." The album takes you from songs with a strong folk flavour, to a Hindi romantic number, club song to even, what seems like an item number by Neha Dhupia. Also, sharing the credit rolls are Poonam Dhillon, Minissha Lamba and Kulraj Randhawa.

A royal salute
Amarjot Kaur

Sushmit Sen's musical tribute to India's National Anthem has a certain kind of meditative quality, which gives the song a defining edge. With an illustrious career spanning 20 years, Susmit Sen, who is the founder-member of the band Sushmit Sen Chronicles, for long has also been the lead guitarist of the band Indian Ocean. The Indian National Anthem is a song from his upcoming album Depths of the Ocean. Performed live on Balcony TV Delhi, the Six String Salute will indefinitely touch the nationalist in you.

"Sushmit Sen is a highly respected musician known for combining Western Classical Jazz and Rock with Hindustani Classical and Folk Styles. He is known for his innovative style of playing, which is quite evident in the Six String Salute," says Jaspal Sahib, a Chandigarh-based musician. While Susmit Sen's fluid guitar lines recall Jerry Garcia and John McLaughlin at their best, he has a very distinct original style of playing.

"I am a huge fan of Sushmit Sen and there is not a better way for a musician to pay a tribute to India than to play the national anthem," says Aman Suraj, a Chandigarh-based musician with the band, Aayat. Himanshu Kappal, a Chandigarh-based musician, who also performs at the Blue Frog and Hard Rock Café, Mumbai, shares, "Sushmit Sen mentored several young musicians, collaborated with a wide array of celebrated ones and performed solo concerts across the world. His Six String Salute is the greatest salute any musician can give to his country."

Control freaks
Jasmine Singh

One more comedy film, but this one is minus the jatt element. Gaurav Singh, who is directing Control Bhaji Control, is sure about his script and execution, but the question is will he be able to control the box office?

This could be rated as the second most favoured word of the Punjabi film industry. While they let the 'jatt' be, the industry is keen on exploring more of bhaji. First, they landed bhaji in a huge problem (read Bhaji in Problem), and now they are asking him to control. Control Bhaji Control, the upcoming film is a step ahead in the 'bhaji' legacy.

As the star cast, Karan Kundra, Sandeep and Simran along with their director Gaurav Singh, gets chatty about the project, we wonder what makes the stars and directors fancy the genre comedy despite the repeated fiasco at the box office.

Gaurav Singh has an air of confidence around him. He is sure about the elements that he has introduced in this film, which otherwise, has a lot of comedy to fall back on. "Most filmmakers feel that if they can put in BN Sharma or Jaswinder Bhalla in a film, they can get a comedy. For a film in this genre to do well, one needs a good script and then the characters should fall in line," he says.

Not that Gaurav has made a revelation, but in times like this, when Punjabi films are drawing inspiration from whatever they can get, asking for an original story is too much! Gaurav is quick to add, "Control Bhaji Control is a story of two friends who are creating a problem for their father with the con ways, what follows are series of understandings and misunderstandings." Well, if you can conjure up an image of Govinda and Sanjay Dutt giving a hard time to their father Kader Khan, simply wait for the release of the film!

Next up, all in love with this genre is the good looking actor Karan Kundra. Karan has worked in sensible and effective shows like Gumraah, and his love for Punjabi cinema is known to all. He talks about the reach of Jatt & Juliet, on Karan Johar being interested in knowing about the growth of Punjabi films, without dismissing the fact that we definitely need good makers and scripts. "My character in this film is different from the others that I have done before. I am open to Punjabi cinema, if it offers me good roles," adds the actor who is shooting for MTV's Fanaah.

Standing pretty opposite Karan are the two actresses, Sandeep and Simran. Sandeep, who makes her debut in this film, is excited, "This is my first Punjabi film and I am not doing any useless comedy, I also have quite a bit to contribute," she adds, which of course the audience will find out as the film opens across India on August 22.

Life’s lessons
Mona

A certified life coach, Ramon Lamba, wants to teach life skills that help one to take care of one’s physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual well being

You are God’s own creation; he has put everything in you to achieve your purpose — is what Ramon Lamba practices and preaches. How else would you explain the rise of a girl, raised in conservative business family; married soon after class XII in an equally rich conservative business family? Neither in Ramon’s birth home or the one she married; daughters or daughters-in-law worked. But here is Ramon managing her two verticals seamlessly—being president of a real estate company and also a certified life coach! Not only she found her ‘purpose’ and achieved it, but also managed beautifully the role of an entrepreneur, daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, mother and a life coach! Here is how:

Ramon knew she had to do something in life. That something came after a lot of soul searching. “I began my career as a designer for bridal wear, also taking marketing and sales along with it. But soon realised I wasn’t cut out for just selling.” Ramon has always maintained the balance between four major quotients of life that she names — PQ, IQ, EQ and SQ. “Unless you take care of all four — your physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual well being, you are not doing justice to your life,” she says. And, so followed an enriching journey. Ramon undertook Reiki as Master from Ushui Shiki Rhoyo, past-life therapy from Dr Brain Weiss, is a life coach from Louis L Hay, has done astrology and vastu from Lal Bahadur Shastri Vidyapeeth and business coaching from American Institute of Business Psychology and many more. “In life there are two factors — one is you and other the circumstances. While Reiki helped understand the person, astrology in finding the right times, vastu helped managing energies around. And, there are things that are beyond one’s control here. Past-life regression helps in understanding our karmic cycle.” The only thing that stops us from form achieving our true potential is fear and not having belief in our own strength. But Ramon had none of it. She spent first five, six years in her in-law’s home winning each member’s trust.

That won, her father was flummoxed by her desire to do business. “His first reaction was how much money do you need, but by and by he realised what I was set to do, and so did others and are totally proud of me today.”

Having been a motivational speaker and a life coach, Ramon (she was born Raman but changed her name due to numerological reasons) is happy bringing in positive changes in people’s lives. But it’s not here that she stops. “I have realised that schools do teach us languages, science and maths but no life skills. It’s important to know how to keep relationships healthy, manage anger or emotional set backs; so I want to have life schools all over India that teach you what we miss in regular schooling.” Her message for you, “Believe in yourself and your dream. Luck is nothing but Labour Under Correct Knowledge.”

You can do it

Here is what sought after motivational Guru Ramon Lamba prescribes you to achieve your full potential...

  • Think, dream...chalk out your life's plan
  • Get equipped to walk on the road you have set yourself on
  • Work relentlessly till you reach your dream
  • Believe in your dream and capability to realise it
  • Give what you want to receive, acceptance will attract acceptance, rejection will lead to rejection
  • Take care of your physical, emotional and mental health

Film Singham Returns
Director Rohit Shetty
Cast Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Amole Gupte, Zakir Hussain
Rating **

As it is Hindi masala films are only occasionally and that too accidentally inspirational. And when the film happens to be a sequel, never mind the tag line- join the fight-or the fact that it was released on the Independence Day, it can be anything but stirring.

So, Singham Returns, a sequel to Singham, can only be old wine in the same bottle. Brace yourself for more of the same. Only the dare devil police officer Baji Rao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is now DCP in Mumbai, a city of nearly two crores manned by less than fifty thousand police personnel. Now, you know the answer to why Singham has to function like a one-man army. Of course, in his fight to finish the corrupt, he is not quite alone but accompanied by half a dozen faithfuls, including. Daya (who else but Daya of the CID fame).

Also, on the right side of the law is the chief minister of the state (Mahesh Manjerkar) and a politician Guru (Anupam Kher). Don't wrack your brains trying to figure out whether his character is fashioned after Anna Hazare or the present Prime Minister of the country. Suffice it is to say Anupam Kher in the part of a well-meaning Guru who reposes faith in the youth of the country is completely wasted. And, so in a way is Amole Gupte. Despite a meaty part and heavyweight dialogues as the devilish Godman, he fails to create any real or lasting impact and is more infuriating than menacing. Jarring also is Kareena Kapoor Khan as Avni, the mandatory romantic addendum to such films. In an over-the-top role, she reminds you of Kareena of yore, prior to her transformation as the endearing Geet of Jab We Met. In an ill-defined role except for jabber, jabber there isn't much that she can do. And, she doesn't try any better either.

Devgn, of course, gets his pound of flesh and is surprisingly understated even when he snarls at the journos and cares two hoots about the law. In a film that is otherwise overtly dramatic most of the way and caricaturish at best even when it tries to whip up emotional quotient somehow he stands out. And that probably is the only saving grace in the film that offers nothing new let alone refreshing or exciting. From politician-godman nexus to cars exploding in your face to catching confessions live on camera... ad nauseam and ad infinitum we are served the same concoction that goes by a misnomer called entertainment.

Sure in the technical department, actions sequences are well executed and orchestrated. But when the rest of the body is suffering from 'seen before' fatigue syndrome, it would be ludicrous to assume that these alone can hold up the film unless you are a complete action buff. By the way even Yo Yo Honey Singh's chartbuster Aata majhi satakli too comes too late in the day (actually unfurls in the end when the credits roll) to resurrect the film.

Jis mein hai dam go and watch the return of Singham. For the rest, let it be clear that Singham Returns with fanfare alright but sans any heart or soul. In short, there really isn't anything that calls for you to rejoice or pay him a visit in cinema halls.

Film The Giver
Director Phillip Noyce
Cast Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep. Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush
Rating ***

The Giver is set in a perfect world where there is no conflict, racism or sickness and every member of society has a specific role and where 16-year-old Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is selected to be the Receiver of Memory, a rare honour. With Jonas are his friends Asher (Cameron Mongnon) and Fiona (Odeya Rush) who are in awe of his selection. But Jonas has to keep his activities completely secret from them. The Giver (Jeff Bridges) is the one who endows him with the honour while the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) keeps an eye of his progress. In this secret society, she is like a Big Sister watching. The inmates are given an injection each morning so they are divested of all feelings or emotions. The Giver takes Jonas close to his heart but Jonas finds secrecy a tough tenet to keep. The inmates are also not allowed to touch each other. Shades of Adam and Eve and the first sin so there are even Biblical overtones. With pretty Fiona at hand it isn't hard to guess what happens.

Jonas' dad (Alexander Skarsgaad) and mum (Katie Holmes) are also at hand but more in a supervisory capacity and they look after Jonas' baby. Actually, the establishing shots are effective and director Phillip Noyce has the viewer in his grip up to the halfway, mixing the serious with colourful song and dance sequences for dramatic relief. Tension builds when Jonas finds out that all is not hunky-dory. There is a catch even hinted to him by the Giver but the domineering Chief Elder is omnipresent. Slowly, ever so slowly Jonas learns that the previous Receiver Rosemary (Taylor Swift) had escaped beyond the boundary. It is now that the screenplay gets heavy. The action too begins to pall.

Though Jeff Bridges brings authenticity to the role, the narrative flatters only to deceive. Meryl Streep finds herself in an unusual role but Brenton Thwaites gives enough evidence of his immense talent. The others just flit in and out like moths around a flame but The Giver is certainly worth watching.

It is an attempt at serious cinema and this must be appreciated.

STAR TRACK
Tabu opens up

Vishal explained that the film was about Haider's search for his father, his ambiguous relationship with his mother. The character had many layers. I hadn't performed in this space in a while. So, it was a good exercise to express myself emotionally. But I wasn't sure about playing Shahid's mother.

Tabu will be seen in Haider next and she is being spotted at events too. She talks about her life, her movies, and Haider, among other things.

Simple & stupid

I'm single and living alone. So, people assume that I'm a recluse. It annoys me but adds to the mystery and mystique. Had I been married or in a relationship, things might have been different. Sach to yeh hai, my life is simple and stupid. Chahe jitna bhi khod lo, kuch nahin niklega.

Right reasons

Princes came along, but only in the movies. Marriage is still important, I don't deny or reject the fact that nature has ordained that we should be with someone who can add something to our lives. But I've also come to understand that you should be with someone for the right reasons and not because it's conventional.

Funny person

I had a blast filming Hera Pheri, Saajan Chale Sasural, Biwi No. 1 and recently Neeraj Pandey's Saat Uchakkey with Manoj Bajpai, shot in a hotel room in Mauritius over just 24 days. Before every shot, I would convulse with laughter and director Mukul Abhyankar would wonder if we were making a comedy or a psychological thriller. I want to work with people for whom a film is like a picnic and not someone who aims to change the world.

Jai Khan brothers

Salman and Sohail Khan are like family to me. I've done several films with Salman. There were two offers before this too, but they didn't work out. When Sohail offered me Jai Ho, I grabbed it with both hands. Salman and Sohail have in the past, coaxed me to do concert tours and because of that I could buy myself a nice flat. The money was great and we had a blast. Ditto, Jai Ho!

Haider and Kashmir

Vishal explained that the film was about Haider's search for his father, his ambiguous relationship with his mother. The character had many layers. I hadn't performed in this space in a while. So, it was a good exercise to express myself emotionally. But I wasn't sure about playing Shahid's mother. I wondered if I looked that old. It was brutally cold, my eyes and nose were watering and my teeth clattering. There was a lot happening on screen to a huge canvas of complicated characters, Kashmir and its '90s politics added to the drama. Feelings changed in every frame, yet most of the time all I could think of, ‘Did I say my lines right?'

Blossoming bromance

Sharing a bond of over 10 years that only grows stronger with the passage of time, director Anurag Basu and actor Emraan Hashmi shared screen space for the first time ever on Zee TV's India's Best Cinestars Ki Khoj. Having worked with each other on three successful film projects, including Gangster and Murder, Emraan and Anurag have always been a hit director-actor jodi. The two of them were very excited at the prospect of catching up after long and judging the acting talent hunt show together!

Their camaraderie was something that caught the eye of the shutterbugs before they even entered the set. When Anurag first saw Emraan on the sets, he pounced on him and ended up jolting Emraan.

Emraan, who was in a serious discussion with the creative director of the show, started laughing and complained how long it had been since Anurag had taken out some time to meet him.

Taking care of Emraan like his younger brother, Anurag ensured that Emraan had his food on time and got his breaks on time while shooting for the show. While Emraan was comfortably seated by Anurag's side, each time he had to comment on an act done by the contestants, he would first discuss it with Anurag and only then give his feedback. Apart from this, the two even shared little amusing anecdotes from the shoot of the films they have worked on together. Citing a moment from the shoot of Murder, Anurag and Emraan burst out in a spell of laughter when they spoke about how a scene from the movie Murder required Mallika Sherawat to give her number to Emraan. While Mallika gave away her actual number in the shot, she thought it would be edited in the movie. However, the scene was never edited which ended up in Mallika getting number of calls from viewers who till date call her and harass her.

While Emraan and Dada seemed to have a good time with each other on the sets, the contestants were thrilled to have Emraan among them for the shoot as well. Syed Mamoon, a contestant on the show, is a big fan of Emraan and ensured that he did not leave a single chance to floor Emraan with his flawless acting. Reciting Emraan's dialogues to the tee, he and Emraan ended up in a jugalbandi of sorts on the sets.

Sajid feels responsible for me: Kriti

Actress Kriti Sanon is slowly finding some bearings in an industry where she was a complete outsider till a couple of years back. She has a three-film contract with producer Sajid Nadiadwala and is now looking forward to working with him again. She tells us more.

Protective Sajid

I think Sajid is a producer who takes care of you like his own child when he is launching you. He is very much concerned about what I pick up next. He feels responsible for me, regardless of whether my immediate next film is with him or someone else. I guess that by itself is a big deal. Though I am not in a binding deal and it isn't as if I have to exclusively work on three-films straight before I move on to some other filmmaker, I would really like to work with him.

Best year

Look at the year he is having. First, he scores a hat-trick as a producer. Then he comes up with a debut directorial affair and makes Kick a Rs 200 crore affair. I guess what makes him special is the fact that he has a great choice of scripts.

On my way

I still don't know many people personally but then there were a few who are genuinely appreciative of the work I do. It would be immodest of me to name anyone when some head honchos of big corporate houses make an effort to text you after seeing your work, you indeed feel thrilled that there are people out there who have confidence in you. These little texts and gestures make your day.

Priyanka challenges her fan

Priyanka Chopra's upcoming flick, Mary Kom, is all set to hit theaters soon. The leggy lass is leaving no stone unturned to promote her biopic flick. Priyanka recently visited the sets of Comedy Nights with Kapil along with other stars to promote her film. In the question round of the show, a fan asked Priyanka if her muscular look in the movie is real or done by VFX. Priyanka confronted this question very sportingly and decided to answer her fan with a live example. She asked her fan to come on the stage and do push ups with her. The actress proved the fan wrong by doing 25 push ups in one go, whereas he stopped at 22. After which he apologized to Priyanka and also took back his words saying women can also have a body like men and have that kind of conviction towards a role. This proves that Priyanka is not only strong in reel life but in real life as well.

Rani to visit Ambaji

Rani Mukerji wants to visit Ambaji temple in Ahmedabad to seek blessings for Mardaani and give thanks for her life. The Ambaji temple is a major Shakti peeth in India. This is the first time a Bollywood celebrity will visit it.

Donor team

Sohum Shah urged the team of Ship of Theseus to pledge to donate their organs, as was shown in the movie on August 13 which is World Donation Day. He pledged last year.

Non-stop dancing

Shahid Kapoor has been a background dancer for Shiamak Davar before he became an actor. During his recent stage show in London, he danced for seven hours more than required for practice. He treated the background dancers very well.

Raveena is back

Actress Raveena Tandon is currently busy shooting for Onir's next film Shab in Delhi after which the cast will go to Mussoorie. She plays a fashion patron who lives in a Chattarpur, Delhi and heads an Art Foundation. The film also stars Sanjay Suri, Ashish Bisht and French actor Simon Frenay.

Yet another Vampire series

The warrior at war

Any show starring Amitabh Bachchan will be based on him and so does Yudh, which is a story about a man, who is dying and trying to right certain things in his life. The plot is heavily inspired from the American TV series, Boss.

Saas Bahu saga

In Jamai Raja, Ravi Dubey takes the initiative to bridge the gap between his wife and mother-in-law, as the promos suggest. Currently, he is the focus of the show and Nia Sharma hardly seems to have a role in the show.

The driving force

He plays the role of a driver's son, who is in love with the daughter of his employer in Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi. The love story unfolds from his point of view and Shakti Arora is doing a good job as a main lead.

It's good to be bad

He has given the word bad boy a whole new dimension by playing the arrogant, self-obsessed man Samrat in Doli Armaanon Ki. He is a wife beater, a villain and drives the story forward.

It’s Showtime!

Sony Entertainment Television's most popular show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, will yet again etch a defining moment in the minds of its viewers forever as it will go live for the first time ever amidst thousands of fans in Surat. Amitabh Bachchan, who in the capacity of a host is the heart and soul of the show, obliged a fan at the Grand Premiere of KBC, on being requested to recite a dialogue from his movie Agneepath. AB immediately got into the character of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan and recreated the magic of his hit movie, much to the delight of the crowd.
