Mining mafia attack police party
Dera Bassi, August 9 The police have booked nearly 12 persons, including a village panch, besides impounding three tractors used for ferrying the sand from the village. The incident occurred on the Ghaggar riverbed in Bhaura village late last night when a police party led by ASI Harpal Singh reached the mining site and tried to stop the illegal activity. Seeing the police, some of the persons involved in the mining managed to escape, while certain henchmen of the mafia countered the police party. Some of them smashed the windowpanes of a private car used by the police. There was a high drama in the village when residents, including women, reached the site following which Anil Sharma, superintendent of the Dera Bassi police, had to send additional police force to tackle the situation. Residents and the henchmen alleged that they were paying to the police personnel for the activity since long. Talking to The Tribune, Sharma said after receiving information about illegal mining in the village, a police party was sent to conduct the raid. But members of the mining mafia and the villager residents resisted the operation and chased the police. They also damaged a vehicle used by the police, the SP added. The police conducted raids in the village to nab those who were involved in the illegal mining but to no avail. They seized three tractors used in the mining, besides registering cases under the Mining Act and sections of the IPC against Hari Singh, village panch, Amrik Singh, Jurjant Singh, Manjit Singh and over six other unidentified persons. No arrest has been made in this regard so far. Sanjiv Kumar, SDM, Dera Bassi, said illegal mining was going on in the village and the police had booked a few persons earlier also in this regard. |

Girl dies in mishap
Dera Bassi, August 9 According to information, Gurmeet along with her daughter was coming towards the Chandigarh side from Ambala on a motorcycle when a truck hit them. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot leaving them injured unattended on the railway overbridge here. They were rushed to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. Later, Akshila was referred to the PGI, where she died late last night. The body was handed to her family after conducting autopsy at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. Sanitary items stolen
Chandigarh, August 9 Complainant Parmod Goyal said someone had stolen sanitary items, including water taps, washbasins and other items of two bathrooms, from his house. The house was allotted to the complainant by the HC recently. The police have registered a case. — TNS

One booked for fraud
Chandigarh, August 9 The accused, Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Sector 21, here has been booked under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the case has been handed over to the Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police. Sources in the police said the complainant, Sanjay Kalra, a Mani Majra-based businessman, bought a luxury car in 2013 and Kuldeep assured Sanjay of getting a vanity number for his car. Sanjay then paid Rs 15 lakh to Kuldeep for the vanity number. However, Kuldeep neither provided the vanity number nor he returned the money. Following repeated excuses by the accused, the complainant approached the police, following which a case was registered against the accused at the Sector 17 police station. |

Woman arrested for stealing diamond rings
Chandigarh, August 9 Police sources said the CCTV footage was spread across the city and the nearby districts. The investigation agency received credible information about the woman from some local residents of the motor market on Friday night. Police officials said the accused, Shabina, reportedly confessed to her involvement in the crime and two stolen diamond rings were recovered from her possession. The accused has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days in the Model Burail Jail. A case was registered at the Mani Majra police station. — TNS |

Mohali, August 9 According to reports, the youths, who had their faces covered, attacked the house of Inderjit Singh. They attempted to enter the house and also fired at a CCTV camera on the premises, but the bullet hit a wall. They also damaged a car parked at the house. Soon after, people of the area gathered and the attackers fled. A case has been registered at the Phase VIII police station under Sections 452 and 427 of the IPC and provisions of the Arms Act. It is suspected that there may be a link between the attack and yesterday’s ruckus at the judicial courts here. — OC |

Chandigarh, August 9 The Punjab Deaf Association had booked the Sector 17 stadium for two days i.e. August 8 and 9 to play against the invited team from Pakistan (Punjab) for the 1st Deaf International Football Championship. According to information, when the organisers reached the venue, they found no marking on the ground and no attendant, except a security guard, was at the venue. When the organisers approached the local referees, they passed the buck to the lethargic approach of the UT Sports Department. With no time left, the organisers, with the help of local referees, marked the entire ground. At the eleventh hour, the organisers were provided with three sacks of marking powder for Rs 1,200 with no payment slip. “I have been organising such competitions for 12 years now and I have never come across such a situation so far. Even the grass was not properly trimmed. Earlier, on March 29, we had organised a match on this ground and all the facilities were provided without any hiccups. This situation was quite embarrassing for us,” said the secretary of the association, Rinku Singhal. The manager of the ground, however, maintained, “Organisers are solely responsible for this. Due to the rainy reason, the grass cannot be trimmed. The grass-cutting machine or tractor may damage the ground.” According to a source in the same office, the attendants were busy in making arrangements for the UT Open Tennis Tournament at the Lake Sports Complex. “We were short of manpower as everyone was busy making provisions for the tennis meet,” said an official, on the condition of anonymity. Day 2: India (Punjab) log win In the first match, India (Punjab) tasted defeat against Pakistan (Punjab) 3-0. The match started at fast pace with Abid Hussain of Pakistan (Punjab) making the first goal in the 14th minute. Shafavat Ali doubled the lead in the 16th minute. The host side tried hard to make a comeback but, failed in their effort. The third goal was made in the 30th minute by Zeeshan Saif. The match is being conducted in collaboration with the Football Players Association of Chandigarh. On the second day, today, India (Punjab) defeated Pakistan (Punjab) 4-2. In the 18th minute, Amandeep Singh of India scored the first goal. Gurpreet Singh doubled the lead in the 22nd minute. Pakistani (Punjab) players, however, bounced back with the help of Abid Hussain in the 30th minute. After the lemon break, Amritpal Singh scored another goal in the 48th minute. The joy was cut short with a brace by Shafaqat Ali of Pakistan side in the 55th minute of the game. In the last minutes, Harsimran Singh of India (Punjab) scored the fourth goal. In the two-match series both teams won a game each. In the decider tie-breaker, Indian side got better off Pakistan (Punjab). |

Chandigarh, August 9 In the same category, Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27, and Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45, secured second and third positions, respectively. In the final, the winning team beat Moti Ram Arya School 2-0 (29-12, 29-16). In the hard line match, Chandigarh Baptist School defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56, 2-0. In the girls’ (U-19) category, Government High School, Sector 32, claimed the title by defeating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, 2-0 (29-23, 29-26). In another match, Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, defeated DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 15. Meanwhile, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 56, won the boys (U-17) title. Government Model High School, Sector 26, (police lines) notched third spot. Paavan outplays Arshita in table tennis meet
Chandigarh, August 9 Paavan named the finals with a straight set wins, 11-7, 11-8 and 11-5. Earlier, in the semifinals, Paavan outclassed Vasundra of Gurukul Global School, Mani Majra, 3-0 (11-3, 11-9 and 11-7) while, Arshita Garg beat Vibhuti of Gurukul Global School, Mani Majra, 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-8). In the sub-junior category final, Shaurya Gupta of DAV Public School, Sector 8, defeated Sahil Sharma, 3-2. In the final, Shaurya lost first two sets 9-11 and 8-11. He, however, registered back-to-back win in the next three sets 11-7, 12-1 and 11-5 to bag the final title. In the girls (U-19 years), Pareen beat Paavan, 3-1 (5-11, 11-8, 11-5 and 12-10).
