Lt. Navdeep Singh; Naik Nar Bahadur
Thapa; Capt. Arun Singh Jasrotia; 2nd Lt Raman; Hav. Bachittar Singh In a world dominated by commercial interests and cut-throat corporate culture, where ethics and principles are moulded and compromised conveniently, bravery, sacrifice for the country and dedication to duty have surely taken a back seat. With stories of scams, secret deals, exposes and tales of CEOs and biz-whizs flooding bookshelves, it is not often that one finds the spotlight on real-life heroes. The gap is all the more pronounced in children’s literature of our country. Thus, it is heartwarming and refreshing to come across illustrated tales of brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country while performing their duty. Keeping the promise of sharing the real-life stories of brave soldiers of the Indian armed forces for the Facebook and Whats app-fed young generation, Rishi Kumar, the young and enthusiastic creator of Aan Comics, offers the Warrior — Beyond the Call of Duty series this time. "Most of us don’t know what our brave warriors experience and endure during combat. Their extreme sense of commitment to protect the honour and integrity of our country is very inspiring. This series is another step in the endeavour to introduce these heroes to the youngsters so that they value freedom and the legacy of loyalty and love for their motherland", says Rishi. The series comprises five comics illustrating the valour of Ashok Chakra winners — Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa, Havildar Bachittar Singh and Second Lieutenant P.M. Raman, Captain Arun Singh Jasrotia and Lieutenant Navdeep Singh. The stories of these gallantry award winners from different regions of the country and who performed daring operating in different timelines (from 1948 to 2011) effectively portray dedication to duty that defines the legacy of our defence forces. Ashok Chakra is the country’s highest peace time military award for valour, courageous action or self sacrifice away from the battlefield. Though the illustrations are in black and white, brevity of text compliments the pace of combat while presenting the story effectively. A brief introduction of the soldier’s background, award citation make each comic more informative. The comics are also available on Flipkart. Aan Comics has carved a niche for itself in this genre of war comics over the past couple of years and this genre now seems to be acquiring a steady following in India. Roli books has also published a couple of comics on similar lines by Maj Gen Ian Cardozo and Rishi Kumar presenting the stories of Param Vir Chakra winners Maj Somnath Sharma and hero of Operation Vijay in Kargil, Lt. Manoj Pandey.
