Chhat Bir Zoo Bipin Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Chhat Bir, July 15 Heli, a lioness, procured from Rajkot in Gujarat in March 2011, gave birth to a litter of four cubs almost 18 days ago. Her male partner, Abhay, came from Delhi Zoo after her first mate, Gagan, died just after nine months of their arrival. Zoo officials have concealed the development and are monitoring the mother and its cubs round-the-clock in an isolated house at the lion safari. Taking no chance, the zoo authorities have permitted entry to the ‘house’ only to the keepers who are monitoring each activity of the first-time mother, Heli, and its cubs, sources in the zoo said. Dharinder Kumar, Chief Wildlife Warden, Punjab, however claimed that the mother and its cubs were doing fine. “The family is in isolation and is being monitored through CCTVs installed inside the house. Their gender has not been determined as yet. The cubs will be released in the safari for display only after a considerable age,” Kumar claimed. With the new arrivals, the population of lions in Chhat Bir Zoo has gone to five, including an old inbred male, Raman. Raman is the only survivor among over hundred hybrid lions and has developed cataract in both eyes. He has even lost his canines. Experts say that the zoo officials must manage the population of Asiatic lions scientifically to avoid inbreeding. The Chhat Bir zoo earlier had Asiatic and African lions and due to inbeeding their population had risen to nearly 105 in 2001-02. The inbreeding had even led to genetic disorders and eventually mortality rate became high. The Punjab Wildlife Department took almost 13 years to overcome this problem by phasing out the old stock of hybrid lions. |

Sources said the department was planning to conduct the nationals around the Dasehra and Diwali holidays to avoid any haphazardness, which occurred in the previous year in providing stay to participating teams and organising the matches, here. “The city will host the SGFI baseball nationals in the boys’ and girls’ (U-19) categories expectedly in October. Last year, the department failed to host the national school games for cricket following issues regarding staying of teams and organising matches,” said an official of the Education Department on the condition of anonymity. “Hopefully, this time everything would fall in line. Last year, the department fall-short on many things. In February, it was not able to accommodate teams and school teachers, who were responsible for organising such meets,” the official added. One of the reasons for not hosting the SGFI national school games in cricket was due to the busy schedule of local schools and officials of the Education Department in November 2013. The competition was further postponed to January 2014 and then from January 30, 2013, to February 4, 2014. However, the department took a U-turn at the eleventh hour. The matches for the competition are expected to be held at the grounds of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35; PEC University of Technology; Panjab University; and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 42; in Chandigarh. |
