Apolitical cut
Earlier this year, an e-commerce site started selling Modi kurtas, cashing upon the popularity of the Prime Minister designate and his well-starched, well-stitched pastel-shaded kurtas. Now after he has won the election, Narendra Modi has become a muse for a fashion designer in Mumbai, who has stitched a special suit for his swearing-in ceremony.
We don’t know if he would like to try the designer-wear, but there are several politicians on the list of fashion designers who they would love to dress up or give some serious piece of fashion advice!
Subtle variation
Kurtas teamed up with sadris and Nehru jackets have been the staple fashion diet of politicians, but you can’t rule out the spiced up variations. It’s interesting that every male politician wants to wear the same kurta and sadri combination, but with distinct changes in design. Some want it colourful, some loose while some well-fitted. For Jyotiraditya, I would love to design a short kurta in powdered blue colour with a sadri in royal blue, which would look very classy with a pair of Jodhpuri pants.
Fabric feast
We find Narendra Modi the best dressed among politicians, the only change we would want to is make his jackets out of printed fabrics. They would either be made in traditional Indian prints or
colour-blocked. We would also design linen pants for him, the most comfortable fabric for the Indian summer. For his trips to the West, it would be a formal suit, well-structured and he is very fit to carry it off. Also, we think Sachin Pilot should urgently hire us! He is young and dashing but dresses up like nearing-the-retirement politician. And among the female politicians, Kirron Kher is one we would love to design for. The first change in her wardrobe we will make is adding georgette sarees with traditional Indian works. Georgette is the fabric that would suit her body type. She will look slimmer. Also her accessories will be subtle.
Beyond nine yards
For women politicians, the starched six-yard wonder remains the best bet. We saw most of them stick to it, even as they campaigned on dusty tracks while the mercury soared; the only exceptions being Gul Panag and Shazia Ilmi. I would love to dress up Gul Panag and hope she continues her political journey. I will design high-collared jackets, with long-buttoned shirts and denims made of lighter material. For her election rallies, it would be long kurtas in traditional craft and linen pants. Light junk jewellery will go well with the look.
Cool quotient
It would be interesting to see how the debutants who have made it to Parliament would dress up
for their job. Will they play safe with the same white kurta pyjama with a black sadri or colours will be adopted. As for me,
I am looking forward to designing the wardrobe for politician-friend Babul Supriyo, who won the Kolkata seat for BJP. I don’t want him to dress up according to the standards set by the veteran politicians. Rather I would make him go for buttoned kurtas, Nehru jackets
and denims. I would also make him wear a watch and a cool pair of sunglasses. He is young and he must look his age. However, a politician who I feel never falters with his turn-out is Narendra Modi. He looks every bit a politician and a professional at the same time. How many politicians do you see sharing that trait? ashima@tribunemail.com

Conserve, preserve
While nature paid a heavy price for human civilisation, there’s only a little that it demands back from society. Perhaps, only the residual concern of humanity that lurks for meaning in the Gandhian philosophy— what we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.
Today, as many as seventy-four species become extinct every day on an average, which gives us all a significant reason to worry, but there are only a few who shoulder the responsibility of conserving and preserving — the two old-fashioned words. “Unfortunately, there is no substitute for species that become extinct, so the only way to preserve them is to conserve,” says Tim Faulkner, a conservationist, who will soon be debuting on a television show, The Wildlife of Tim Faulkner, which will be telecast on Animal Planet. The premiere series The Wildlife of Tim Faulkner will see him saving Tasmanian Devil from extinction, weighing giant Galapagos tortoise, feeding baby wombats, rescuing flying fox and discovering new species of native birds. Serving the office of a general manager at the Australian Reptile Park, Tim’s day starts with wrestling a saltwater crocodile, wrangling a deadly inland Taipan and milking a Funnel-web spider to make anti-venom, but there is more to his passion for wildlife. “Australian wildlife, their management within zoos, the education of people who visit the zoos and their conservation within their natural habitat is what I crave for,” says Tim, who is playing an important role in the Tasmanian Devil mainland breeding programme. Tim shares that there are only as many as 150 Tasmanian Devils left in the world. “The iconic Tasmanian Devil is nearing extinction from the devil facial tumour disease. The Australian Reptile Park became involved when the breeding programme started in 2006 and I have bred more devils in the park than any other establishment. They are such beautiful creatures! Also, they have a pouch, like kangaroos,” he shares. Tim’s work with the Australian Reptile Park’s venom programme sees him handle the world’s deadliest snakes and spiders to produce venom, which is then made into anti-venom at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratory. Considering that reptiles are the most advanced of all amphibians, there are only a few who tread on their turf. “Australia has the world’s ten most poisonous snakes and from my experience, I have only known that they are extremely scared of humans and the bite is the reaction when they feel threatened,” shares Tim. Tim grew fond of animals since childhood and started working in the wildlife park in Western Sydney when he was only 14. Quiz him on his best choice of reptile and he gives a prompt reply, “Crocodiles!” Tim shares that his fascination for crocodiles is primarily because they are extremely instinct-driven and emotional as well. “I would love to tame one, for sure,” he says. A qualified zoo keeper since 2000, Tim is also a favourite with the media. A likeable personality, he frequently appears on shows such as Sunrise and the Today Show.

Go with the flaw
It’s not just your face alone but your body too that can benefit from make-up Manpriya Singh Cover scars, hide those burns, coat your tattoo, enhance cleavage and conceal injury mark…There is all the more need for make up on the body, even though it seldom moves away from the face. If at all, there are no flaws to cover, there is scope for a tanned glow, body contour, muscle definition and the right highlights. Opines Dr Poonam, beauty manager, Tress Lounge, "Body painting has been around for more than 6000 years. The concept has evolved over the years and across cultures from body painting to body art to body make-up." She adds, "The clientele that comes to us is already quite aware of the need for body make up. It is always advisable that whatever you do on the face, one should do same thing for the body as well to avoid the two looking like body parts of two different people." There are several reasons why the attention need not be only on the face. To begin with, there are several flaws on the body parts. "More importantly, nobody wants their face to look all the more painted when compared to bare legs, hands, neck or back. Everything put together needs to match and have a similar tone," shares Mala Bhasin, manager, a Chandigarh-based beauty salon and spa. One need not be precise with body make-up but one need to know the basics of contouring. Body make-up is all about the right understanding of where do natural shadows exist on your body. On your arms: Hold out your arm, as if flaunting your biceps and flex your muscles. Put some foundation in the sidelines (between biceps and triceps). Don't forget to blend. On collarbones: Breathe in deeply and hold your breath for a while. Put a highlighter colour on the collar bones and contouring powder just above and beneath them. The result is a well sculpted cleavage instantly. On legs: Put on a pair of high heels. This should naturally flex your calf muscles, giving you a fair idea as to what to highlight and what to paint. Stand under light and look in the mirror. Paint the shadows created by the light. One can highlight the areas that naturally reflect light. Once again, don't forget to blend. Things to keep in mind

A cantaloupe has naturally occurring sugars, which help satisfy your sweet tooth and may enable you to resist eating high-calorie, less healthy foods. Cantaloupe deserves to be included in your weight loss diet plan in summers because it is a low-energy density food. A 1/2 cup of cantaloupes with other fresh cut fruits form a tasty option of fruit salad, which can help you munch upon a better option rather than to munch upon unhealthy options. Jam, sorbet, and juice are some nutritious and delicious items you can prepare with it. Have it roasted
Liquid asset
Be aware
Although melon can help you meet your weight-loss goals, avoid eating melons exclusively, as your body needs protein from meat or beans, complex carbohydrates from breads and
vegetables. (Kaur is a Chandigarh-based dietician)

The chicken wing
Jesse Grewal The chicken wing is a term used for a 'flying elbow' in the follow through. When the left elbow (for a right handed golfer) moves outwards and upwards similar to a drive in cricket, it is called a chicken wing and is one of the reasons for a slice. To be sure that a sliced shot is caused by a chicken wing follow through check from a down the line view while doing the video analysis. During the follow through if the left elbow is seen coming out from behind the body (picture 1) instead of the club (picture 2), it would be a chicken wing which would not allow the club to release or close and lead to a slice. This is the most accurate way to check. Another way would be form the target side. If the left elbow is pointing upwards (picture 3), it is a chicken wing. The correct release would be as in picture 4. The view from the target side can be confusing as a hold off could be mistaken for a chicken wing.
A chicken wing is caused by either an over the top swing or the lack of lead arm (left) strength and poor lead shoulder flexibility. In the case of the former when the club is travelling on an out to in path the direction of the forces leads to the left arm chicken winging. If the player is unable to rotate around the left shoulder due to joint or muscular restrictions they would be forced to chicken wing. This also leads to a tennis elbow in the lead (left) arm. So if you do slice the ball and feel that you have a chicken wing follow through get it corrected before it leads to a tennis elbow. Going retro for Tigmanshu
Vidyut Jammwal is seen sporting a bearded, long haired look for his next, modelled over Robert De Niro and Al Pacino's yesteryear looks. Looks like we have another actor joining the list of Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh who've taken ‘look authenticity’ to the next level and that's none other than our young action hero Vidyut Jammwal.
Known for his fab bod and his incredible action, the VJ was recently seen sporting a long hair and bearded look. It is believed that the young actor is doing this on instruction of his director Tigmanshu Dhulia, for his next film Yaara, a period gangster drama that has a friendship story at its
core.

Vir instructed to lose weight
After Revolver Rani, Vir has already gotten in to a grueling shooting schedule for his next, 1984 which is based on the infamous Sikh riots that happened 30 years ago. Vir plays a Sikh in the film. Vir had to gain little muscle for his role in Revolver Rani. Since he played an aspiring actor in the film, he had to bulk up a bit to look the part.
In 1984 however, he’s been asked by his director, Shivaji Lotan Patil to lose the bulk and start eating less. In the film, he plays a regular Sikh guy so the director didn’t want to add any frills to his character. He wanted Vir to look as ordinary and simple as possible to bring out the simplicity of his character. He's even been forbidden to use make-up as they want him looking as natural as possible. Vir has been running everyday to get into the required lean shape and now has started shooting for the film with Soha Ali Khan.

Bride & her baggage
Bride-to-be Kim Kardashian flew out of the city for her wedding with 12 bags in tow. Kim, who left Los Angeles on Saturday to meet her Prince Charming, rapper Kanye West, along with her daughter North. The couple is set to marry on May 24 apparently in the Orangerie Garden at the Palace of Versailles, France.
While it may be her third time down the aisle, the 33-year-old is not doing just a simple wedding as was made clear by the mountain of luggage she was bringing with her. The reality star had jaw dropping 12 bags in tow, which were stacked up on a huge trolley and left top an Air France employee to struggle with. While it seemed like Kim's entire life may have been in those bags, one very important piece of clothing was not with her — her wedding dress. On the massive pile of luggage was not a single garment bag, so looks like the gown is already in Europe or is being flown separately. Exactly what Kim will wear on her D-day remains a mystery, with bets currently split between Kanye's friend Ermanno Scervino and one of the couple's favourites,
Balmain. — IANS

Asin’s imposter
Actress Asin, who prefers to stay off social media, recently discovered that an impostor had made an account in her name on the social micro-blogging site and had started interacting with her fellow actors Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and many others.
A source close to the actress said, “This confusion arose when Asin's friends like Abhishek Bachhan, Ritesh Deshmukh started calling her up to check if she had joined twitter. She also came to know that a journalist without checking had printed an article quoting the fake twitter ID thinking that it was a genuine profile." A journo printing without confirming the facts had Asin a little surprised. She clarified to her friends and confused fans that it wasn't her and the account is being operated by an impostor. Even Riteish Deshmukh tweeted a clarification. Asin quotes, “I am not on any social networking site and will make a formal announcement whenever I do decide to join one.”

Himani’s honest take
Veteran actress Himani Shivpuri, who has done innumerable roles, will soon be seen in a comedy show Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai. But the actor feels TV is bereft of fresh ideas and there isn't much acting left.
What is your new show about? Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai is a comedy, with my character of the mother-in-law being a very meethi churi type of controlling woman. It's a fun show where the rituals are weird and done in a playful manner. It's like Tom & Jerry! What still drives you to work? The work itself; I love work! I look for something interesting to do in the roles that I take up. On TV, I haven't done comedy for sometime, so this character is fun. Previously, I played a dominating mother-in-law in Housewife Hai Sab Janti Hai. Why have you reduced your projects in recent times? Initially, it was about survival but now it is about enjoying my work. There are always choices one makes. I was the bread-earner of the family and I had to work, so I had to do multiple projects. Now, I pick what is most intriguing or challenging or fun to do. Which was the last show you enjoyed? Well, when a role is promised to you they stay that way for a month but soon things change and the character disappears. Earlier doing TV was a challenge but since the advent of daily soaps, TV actors and technicians have become very mechanical. That's why it's called a soap — it is produced in a factory. Who are talented actors, according to you, on TV? There is hardly any acting left to do on TV, so there is no scope to show talent. It's not about acting, it's about TRPs these days.

Rajasthan rocks!
Truly regal This love-hate relationship story between Paro and Rudra has many references of Jaipur and Jaisalmer as it's based in a town close to the border. From the sand dunes, to the language, to the costumes...everything screams of Rajasthan.
Rich flavour This costume drama about a Mughal king Akbar and a Rajput princess Jodha has captured the audiences' imagination. Jodha's outfit, style and language are constant reminders of Rajasthan.
All for love Shivani and Raghu belong to different strata of society, but their love is what sets the story apart. Set in a Marwari family, this show is about their story based in Jaipur. The language reflects the state while the dramatics take care of the entertainment.
Reel feel The latest show from producer Rajan Shahi talks about the love story of Avni and Raj. The stories are based in Jaipur and Jodhpur. To bring in the real feel of Jaipur, a few episodes of the show were shot in the pink city Jaipur itself.
Touching base A child bride Pakhi waits for her groom, Anshuman, who isn't in love with her. Shot in Rajasthan, the show, time and again, brings up the reference of Rajasthan, as the original premise is based there.
