When silence speaks volumes
The world without water… the horror is painted by The Schmid family from Switzerland all by gestures and special effects in their mime show Enki, The Water Singer

The world before words was a peculiar place. Sermons would not surrender to selective hearing and speeches did not turn the world deaf. So, when somebody wanted to pass on a message loud and clear, they rather did it on mute mode. In comes The Schmid family from Switzerland and pulls us back to a world before dialogues, through their mime show Enki, The Water Singer.

"What's great about a mime show is that mimicry is a universal language…In fact this was the first language we used. When gestures and expressions take a story forward, everybody can interpret the story using their own imagination. Visuals and body language are a great tool," shares one of the performers Marie Gomez, after just having stepped of the stage at the end of a 40-minute performance at Chitkara International School. "We came here through Helon O' Grady International and we have been touring India for almost four months now, visiting various places like Tamil Nadu, Bangalore, Nagpur, Indore, Mumbai to present our show here."

She adds, "Mumbai has been our base all this while and we've been travelling to different cities for performances."

The story so far…

Joining her is her husband Marcus Schmid, who conceptualised and presented the show. The story of Enki, The Water Singer revolved around Sumerian mythology in which Enki is the God of fresh water and prosperity. Without water, there is no life and no development. Through the eyes of Enki, this dreamlike tale invites the audience to come and be a part of the nightmare, of a world without water. Marcus Schmid takes on the characters of a water carrier in a parched land, of a farmer sowing seeds and praying for water, a fisherman looking for fish in polluted waters, sea life dying from water contamination…

Movements, special effects, music and expressions take care of any absence of dialogues or rather more than make-up for it.

The journey with mimicry started as a student and hasn't ended since. "I was about 20 years old and studied speaking theatre as a part of the curriculum. My teacher spoke a lot about body language, expressions and gestures…All this has always fascinated me. I went to Paris to study mimicry, theatre, dance, acrobats and spent six years learning all that. I thought I would switch to speaking theatre but never did." Back in Switzerland, mime show is, "received with less patience than in other countries. We have a lot of theatre and emphasis on all things intellectual. That's why people do not have a child like quality, which is not the case with India."

Come undone…
Hair stylist Stan Darren Newton who launches his Undone Collection at Tress Lounge, says loose, natural, free hair is in this season
Mona

Studying to be a pilot, Stan Darren Newton took a small detour and that changed his life all together. Interning at a hair salon for three weeks made him realise that he could dress up the way he wanted, listen to music all day and make women feel good!

Twenty-nine years on, this British hair stylist has earned a name for himself, and won numerous awards, including Creative Team of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards.

Tying his top hair in a knot, Stan sits comfortable at Tress Lounge-8 celebrating their 11th anniversary. This creative director, P&G Salon Professionals India, shares his take…

Around the world

I have worked around the globe for three decades. While I have loved working in Japan, I would call my hometown London to be the most experimental when it comes to hair style. Probably because of a multicultural society and open attitude. Being a hairstylist doesn't come easy. First thing you got to have is love to meet people. Practice, dedication are musts and a sense of humour comes handy. If you can suggest your client on what he or she has been thinking always but never tried, half your work is done.

Interesting cut

I love Natalie Portman for her hair choices, in India it's Priyanka Chopra who has caught my eye. The way Priyanka wears her hair looks like she is a free girl. Actresses who enact several characters in different films wear their tresses differently and become trendsetters. My favourite on screen has been Rooney Mara who did an extreme role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, all through the movie she carried a different look. I admire Emma Watson too, who from a young age wasn't allowed to change her hairstyle for her Harry Potter movies. And the first thing she did after the series got over was cut her hair real short. Now she is bob length but short hair cut really suited her.

Well(a) done

I am now in India working with Wella. I was told that women are rather conservative here but I have felt the opposite. Women today are ready to experiment with their hair provided they have faith in their stylist. I love natural curls that women have here. It's sad they don't do much about it but wash and tie in a bun. There is so much more one can do with it. All you need to do with curly hair is to keep them well hydrated so that they look shiny and not frizzy. Wella has provided the latest for the hair care and style all these years, our Luks Oils works just perfect for such hair.

Natural instinct

It's been lovely associating with Tress Lounge's 11th Anniversary celebrations. I have launched here my Undone Collection. For the current spring summer collection, loose, natural, free hair is in. The hair mustn't be completely set. It can be done in any length-short, middle or long. For colours it more of washed down multi-tones.

Pollywood via West
Manreet Kaur, who came to limelight after Jatt Airways, started her career with West is West
Amarjot Kaur

Photo: Pradeep Tewari Sometimes movement is more crucial than improvement. Perhaps that's the reason for Manreet Kaur's choice in signing films. She talks about her career in films and a lot more while at the launch of Gionee's world's Slimmest phone, ELIFE S series.

Manreet, who has acted in several Punjabi films, including Jatt Airways and the up and coming Yaaran Da Katchup, did not quite start her journey with Pollywood. Here's how the cookie crumbles…

Your first break in the film industry…

I did a cameo in the film West is West while I was associated with The Theatre Army. The producer of the film Leslee Udwin saw my work and took me on for the role of a Muslim woman, who keeps yapping most of the time.

While most actors, who start with parallel cinema, look for a concrete script to mount their career on. What was your next step post West is West?

For me, the next step was to do a film in Punjab. However, I landed myself an advertisement assignment in Mumbai for Wagon R and then I did a Marathi film too, which was titled Jai Maharashtra Dhaba, Bathinda and it was quite a hit.

What prompted you to venture into Punjabi cinema?

I am very proud of my Punjabi lineage and when I got the offer to play some roles in films like Jatt Airways, Jatt In Mood and Yaaran Da Katchup, I just signed them on and then there was no looking back. Though the film Yaaran Da Katchup got delayed because of the elections, it will be releasing on August 1 and it is a comedy film with a message.

Do you have any Bollywood projects in the pipeline?

I do actually! I am doing a movie titled Desi Magic that's produced by Amisha Patel and it will also feature Zayed Khan. Also, I am doing a cameo in another film that stars Imran Hashmi, which is tentatively titled No One's Land.

Bollywood or Pollywood, what's your pick?

Well, I started my career as a news anchor and born to parents, who are doctors. I have all the support to do what I truly believe in. So, be it Punjabi cinema or Bollywood, as an actor, I would go for what I believe in. In fact, I am presently shooting for a Punjabi film, titled O Rabba Baksh Bande Nu.

Your dream role…

I want to play a journalist in a film. I really love Rani's role in the film No One Killed Jessica.

Your favourite co-star…

On a professional note, I bond very well Varun Sharma who is acting in Yaaran Da Katchup and Zayed Khan is a brilliant co-star too. He is quite jovial and pepped up all the time and that's what I like the most about him. Must I also admit that I would love to do a film with Salman Khan! (Just in case you are thinking why she didn't mention Emran Hashmi, here's what she says)-I play the role of a spy in the film so the script demanded Imran to be at bay! (laughs).

Thoughts that count
Satvinder Kumar's exhibition Ordinary Thoughts captures the essence of Chanakyaniti
Amarjot Kaur

In many ways, the work of an artist is easy, for he only has very little to risk at the cost of expressing his thoughts on canvas. However, in many ways, the work of an artist is critical, and often misunderstood.

While we try to look beyond the aesthetic parameter of Satvinder Kumar's paintings at the exhibition titled Ordinary Thoughts, at The Art Gallery, Alliance Francaise, we delve into the deeper meaning of existence, which often passes us by unnoticed as we spare very little time to truly think and look beyond.

Satvinder makes a conscious effort to remain composed, showing only a few signs of nervousness as this is his first exhibition. A self-trained artist, Satvinder takes only very brief note of the aesthetic value of his paintings while he walks you through each one of them, elaborating heavily on the meaning and essence of the painting. If you are the sorts who likes the idea of conventional, this exhibition, unfortunately has very little to offer. However, if you like the unusual, this exhibition has more than just a heavy dose of colours to offer. Satvinder, 35, paints a series called Chanakyaniti. These paintings are based on the teachings of Chanakya. While the one with the portrait of Chanakya reveals the futility of looks and delves heavily on the importance of deeds and talents, the one titled The Serpent and The Rascal elaborates on Chanakya's wisdom that emphasises on trusting a snake to sting you with his venom over trusting a so-called friend who may to stab you in the back.

Satvinder tenders a social dimension to his paintings, especially the ones on women. In one particular work, he laments their deplorable state in the modern times and in the other, he holds them on a higher pedestal as he titles them as shakti, which connotes heavily on the mythological relevance of Shiv Shakti.

Satvinder uses acrylic on canvas in most of his paintings, while on others he uses water colour on paper. The paints are laden with the tribal and folk influence and coated with heavy shades of all possible colours, which are not used to define shares, light or depth. The paintings are contemporary, semi-abstract, abstract and figurative. Nevertheless, every painting opens new vistas to vivid thoughts, which as the name of the exhibition suggests, are ordinary, but with extraordinary dimension that extends beyond the parameters of the obvious and apparent.

The paintings are not on sale.

Game for a burger?
A soft juicy burger washed down with a Kohli Punch. What more can you ask for while watching an IPL match?
Ashima Batish

As we slice through a succulent fish burger, it makes a fellow colleague inquisitive if it is the cottage cheese inside the bun that made slicing so easy. It even makes a vegetarian sit up and double check if her burger too has a fish patty inside. It's not difficult to differentiate fish from cheese but it's the soft texture that raises some doubts.

At the IPL Bonanza Food Festival in The Taj, it's a platter full of burgers. There is chicken, lamb, fish and at least three varieties in each, and even for vegetarians there is more than aloo and cheese.

The festival has started in the wake of IPL, encouraging collective viewing of the country's favourite game. But then it is food also that the chefs at Taj want people to come for. "The regular buffet will be on, plus we will serve burgers, which suits the timings of the IPL matches, beginning in the afternoon," says Surinder Singh, GM, Taj Hotel.

While in burgers you must try fish orlay and cottage cheese stack but give tikka masala a miss, the chicken patty is neither soft, nor tempting enough. It is so bland that even the generous layering of mint chutney and mayonnaise fail to add to taste. Then there is Moroccan lamb burger in which hummus plays the role of a spread rather than a dip, garnished with the usual lettuce, tomato and red onion. That's the only usual part of it. They definitely taste different from all the burgers you might have tried so far.

Then, there is a combination of drinks as well, named after the IPL players. Max & Miller is a mix of JD, coke and ice and Kohli Punch is pineapple juice swirled with greanadine, dark rum, lemon, ice….too many additions for a player who likes to keep it simple and just keep the scoreboard ticking.

Doc Talk
More than skin deep…
Dr Alka Dogra

Looking good was never such an earnest quest as it is today. And it is becoming more and more possible with the advance in cosmetology and various small techniques which safely help to better the face and body both.

However, it is very important as an educated and aware person to understand what these procedures actually entail. We are discussing here some techniques with no side effects and easy on the pocket.

Chemical peels

This is the most selling procedure for which the patients are queuing into dermatologists clinics. In simple words peel means bringing about controlled chemical destruction so that rejuvenation occurs by newly formed collagen tissue. Glycolic acid, mandolin acid, lactic acid, arginine poly hydroxyl acid peels are available.

These peels are safe and causes little discomfort to the patient. If taken adequate precautions from the sun, then the incidence of post-inflammatory pigmentation is also minimum. So, in essence alpha hydroxyl peels, beta hydroxyl peels or a combination of two are done. The best example of alpha hydroxyl peel is glycolic acid and of beta hydroxyl is salicylic acid.

Microderma abrasion

The other names for this are power peels or skin polishing. In this procedure with the help of aluminum chloride crystals microabrasions are produced and with the help of suction all superficial scales and dead cells are removed without causing any serious damage. This technique is useful for pigmentation, scars due to any cause and rejuvenation of skin. The crystals used should be of good quality and once used should be discarded. People usually get these peels for glow.

Radio frequency

This is used for the removal of skin tags like moles and warts. This is a very effective machine and side effects are very few. it is also called as poor man's laser and cold cattery. The old tools like surjection or electric cattery are now out and its place has been taken by radiofrequency ablation. There is another type of such procedure now which is called non-ablative radiofrequency specifically for skin tightening.

Fractional laser

It is the latest modern tool on the anvil. This is used for scars, rejuvenation of face and pigmentation. Millions of micro thermal units are produced which bring about the required change. The fractional units are basically either carbon dioxide based or erbium yag or erbium glass based. The results are dramatic but it is an expensive laser and as with other lasers the sun protection is most important post treatment.

Nidyag or diode laser

These are used for the removal of hair and both are good lasers. Multiple sittings are required, spaced six weeks apart with appreciable hair reduction results. Lasers are used for only black hair. For white hair electrolysis or thermolysis or combination of two is useful.

Dermoscopy

The new non-invasive technique that enables recognition of morphologic structures that are not visible to the naked eye and is helpful in differentiating between benign and malignant lesions.

Future Shock
Face off
Is your child on Facebook?
Nishtha Shukla Anand

The demographic of Facebook users is on a constant decline it seems. According to a recent Assocham survey, 73 per cent Indian kids in the age group 8-13 years from Tier-I and Tier-II cities are using the most popular social media network. This is interesting for two reasons.

Firstly, the website doesn't allow users below 13 to register. Secondly, it means companies that are marketing heavily via social media are possibly reaching out to the wrong target!

The more worrisome aspect of this trend is that kids below 13 years are innocent and lack a sense of judgement. This makes them vulnerable to online predators and cyber bullying. You'll see many unknown Facebook profiles trying to connect where the personal information provided is close to nil and they use pictures of famous stars or models. This makes the profile attractive to accept but leaves the child susceptible to the wrong cyber company.

The Assocham further threw some interesting statistics. The report suggests that 75 per cent parents are aware of their child signing up for the site. Of these, 82 per cent parents have helped to create the child's account. This is a bitter sweet situation. It's a way to help your child feel part of their peers and it gives them exposure to the internet. However, if you are a part of this social-media-friendly parents' brigade, here's a suggestion. Try engaging your child in interesting activities online. There are innumerable websites that offer e-learning content, interesting vocabulary, number, and science games online. These websites research well and offer well-researched age-appropriate content. You could download innumerable apps and games on that sleek smartphone instead of handing him over a Facebook account. Get creative, there are tons of things you can give your child online to make it a more engaging and enriching experience.

If you want their social life to flourish, engage them in an outdoor game or invite their friends over and have a ball!

Master Chef
Thandaai ki thandak!
Kandla Nijhowne

Yesterday I stepped out of a cool exhibition hall displaying Lucknowi chikankaari, straight into the blistering Delhi heat. Suddenly I had a longing for other things Lakhnavi....like Lucknow ki thandaai!

Ayurvedic belief is that all foods are either hot or cold in "taaseer". Almonds, magaz (seeds), khuskhus, saunf, elaaichi and rose water come under cooling ingredients, and Lakhnavis have this combo down to a fine art, added to which is a sharp kick of pepper powder. A glass brimming over with the chilled pale yellow magic is a sure shot heat buster. Hazratganj, Ameenabaad and Chowk are dotted with shops which sell embroidery, thandaai and tunde kabaab with equal aplomb! Thadaai, dear readers, is what we could do with right now, so here we go !

Cooling thandaai

  • ¼ cup almonds
  • 1½ tbsp khuskhus
  • 2 tbsp magaz (mixed seeds)
  • 1½ tbsp saunf
  • 18 whole peppercorns
  • ½ cup finely ground sugar (you can minimize this if you like)
  • 5½ cups milk
  • 8-10 whole peppercorns
  • A splash of rose water
  • ½ tsp powdered green elaaichi
  • 3-4 strands of kesar

Method

  • Soak the first five ingredients in minimal water (2-3 hours)
  • Boil the milk, add kesar and sugar. Allow it to cool.
  • Fine-grind the soaked goodies till you have a paste. Mix the prepared paste into the milk and stir.
  • Strain the milk through a muslin cloth with some force till you have extracted all the creamy flavours from the paste at the bottom.
  • Add elaichi powder and rose water, then check for sweetness.
  • Chill and serve in glasses, garnished with a sprinkling of coarsely ground pepper and maybe a rose petal or two!

Metal Orafa collection at Santushti

A unique gold-based jewellery range with an Italian technology—Metal Orafa is now available in the region. Orafa means gold in Italian and Metal Orafa, a jewellery brand was launched at Santushti Jewels-19.

The upper layer of the ornaments in the range is made by 22 per cent gold of 22 karat purity while the inner part 78 per cent, contains alloy metal.

This makes the prices about four times cheaper than gold, but the perceived value of products is as good as pure gold jewellery.

The exhibition is on till May 18 at Santushti. — TNS

Raring to go
Nisha Pahuja’s The World Before Her to release in India on June 6 through PVR initiative Director’s Rare

After having a theatrical release in the US and Canada and winning awards at prestigious International film festivals, Nisha Pahuja's critically acclaimed non-fiction feature The World Before Her is releasing in India on June 6 through PVR Director's Rare.

The much-awaited film, which is presented by Anurag Kashyap will have a theatrical release across eight cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Set between the fascinating worlds of a Durga Vahini training camp and the beauty boot camp of the Miss India Pageant, the powerful 90-minute feature on women in contemporary India premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012 where it won the Best Documentary Award.

The film has screened at more than 125 International film festivals and has won 19 awards. It was recently one of 8 films selected as part of Film Forward, an initiative of the Sundance Institute and four Federal US agencies including the President's Committee on The Arts and Humanities.

Shiladitya Bora, head of PVR Director's Rare says, "We are thrilled to be releasing Nisha's film. We've been talking about this alliance for a year now and we're so glad to finally be presenting The World Before Her. PVR Director's Rare is all about showcasing alternative voices and visions and this film is one we are extremely proud to be associated with. It's had a huge impact internationally and we're confident that Indian audiences will embrace this vibrant and critical story."

Acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap, who supports offbeat projects says, "This movie when I saw it, it impacted me so much. We have started to make a woman believe that for her to be someone she needs to fit into this general idea of being beautiful or else using violence.

Hero in action

Tiger Shroff has done the longest sequence of six minutes thirty seconds in Heropanti. This is longest one cut sequence that we will see on celluloid. The most interesting aspect of the sequence is that it has been shot in one sequence and without any cuts.

The chiseled body hero, Tiger Shroff will showcase his action talent by doing a sequence that has been choreographed keeping his training in mind. Even after the rigorous training that Tiger has undertaken in his growing up years, for this sequence he had to train especially for three months as he had to do the entire sequence in one go. Special cameras were installed at all vintage points to capture the action from all angles.

A member from the unit revealed how the sequence was made more complex and challenging because they were sure that Tiger would be able to pull it off well. Heropanti releases on May 23.

Parkour is a holistic training discipline using movement that is developed from military obstacle course training. Practitioners aim to get from A to B in the most efficient way possible. They do this using only their bodies and their surroundings to propel themselves; while they try to maintain as much momentum as is possible in a safe manner.

Parkour can include obstacle courses, running, climbing, swinging, jumping and rolling.

A tiger for a pet!

Meanwhile, the actor has adopted a tiger named Jaan who is 4 years old. Tiger Shroff says, "Similarity of the name not withstanding, I don't think there is any other animal as majestic as the tiger. Perhaps, it is the only being that combines beauty, fearlessness and power. They must be saved and nurtured."

Catching hold of Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh talks about beginning work on Dil Dhadakne Do and working with his idols

Cruise control

Yes, I'm going on my first cruise. There were so many loose ends to tie up before I left. (Sighs) The fast life has become faster and it's not easy to cope. I'm going crazy! That's why I admire Shah Rukh Khan. He's on the go, 300 per cent, 24/7, 365 days a year and there are no signs of a burnout. He's a superman!

On Bajirao Mastani

Yes, I know it's a big risk. Bajirao Mastani is Mr Bhansali's big dream. It is the film he has wanted to make for years. In comparison, I feel Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was just a warm-up. A film like this needs a certain commitment and I'm happy to oblige because I know it'll be one of the most special creative collaborations of my life.

Dil Dhadakne Do

I hope we grow into a real family. I have a healthy and a professional equation with every person on the ship and all the primary, secondary and tertiary characters. It's difficult to put together an ensemble cast. I'm very kicked up about Dil Dhadakne Do because Zoya (Akhtar) and Reema (Kagti) are two of the best writers in the country today. Their stories are original with fresh insights.

Uncle Anil Kapoor

(Cuts in) He is and I feel privileged to be working with two of my idols, Govinda and Anil Kapoor in back-to-back films. I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s. I come from a non-filmy background and these guys were the reason I became an actor. To be sharing screen space with them is such an honour. You know what was my biggest moment at a recent award function?

The big moment

When I entered the stadium on a bike, I was running a high fever and feeling really low, physically. Then I stepped on stage and turned to face the audience. And in the crowd of 60,000 I saw one face smiling at me and that was Govinda's. It infused me with a crazy spiritual energy and I danced only for him.

Why Aishwarya missed Cannes…

Cannes calling: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Cannes calling: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Due to an air traffic controllers' strike in France, former beauty queen and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had missed out her Cannes appearance. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was scheduled to walk the Cannes red carpet on May 16 but she lost the chance due to an unavoidable situation.

On Wednesday, Ash left for Cannes with daughter Aaradhya Bachchan and mother Vrinda Rai but was stuck in London due to an airline strike. Aishwarya was to represent global cosmetics brand L'Oréal Paris at the annual gala.

"Aishwarya was supposed to reach France and walk the red carpet, but due to a strike by Air France, she hasn't been able to fly out of London. There is no clarity as of now about when she will reach Cannes. She had to walk the red carpet on May 16 and 17, but it looks like she may have to do so on other days due to this delay," says the source. The L'Oreal Paris team is making arrangements for the diva to walk the red carpet on May 21.

"Aishwarya's flight from London to Nice was delayed and hence she hasn't been able to reach Cannes as planned. With the latest development, the L'Oréal Paris team is making arrangements for Aishwarya to walk the red carpet on an alternate day," said a statement.

"While the delay has been unfortunate, we are making sure that Aishwarya attends the event on an alternate date and we are sure she will dazzle as always," said Manashi Guha, general manager, L'Oréal Paris India.

Aishwarya made her Cannes debut in 2002 along with Shah Rukh Khan for Devdas and ever since she has been a regular at the festival.

A success story

Playing the bubbly Aastha in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon-Ek Baar Phir is Shrenu Parikh, who is loving the way her career graph is progressing. She talks to us about the success of the show, and how anxious she was initially.

What do you credit the success of the show to? It didn't get a good start but later picked up…

It is a woman-oriented show with romance and drama, so I guess it appealed to the audience.

How similar are you to your character, Aashta?

While both of us are family-oriented, Aastha is outgoing while I am an introvert. I am more practical in life while Aastha isn't and goes over the top when it comes to romance and drama. Also, She is bubbly and chirpy, which I am not.

Your chemistry with co-star Avinash Sachdev is being appreciated. What about height issues with him?

Thankfully, the chemistry is good. As for the height issue, that is manageable.

What would you say has been your biggest success to date?

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon- Ek Baar Phir has been the biggest success. I have had the opportunity to work with such good people and I am thankful for this opportunity. Especially my director Waseem Sabir, who helped me to become a better actor.
