The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police arrested two members of a gang of auto lifters, who were adept in stealing high-end cars and SUVs from the city.

The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh alias Smarty, a resident of Patiala, and Ajit Singh, a resident of Delhi.

The police laid a naka at the road separating Sectors 10 and 3 near Bougainville Garden and apprehended the accused along with a stolen Innova bearing fake registration number PB-11-A-8056.

During the course of investigation, seven vehicles — three Innova, one Accent, one Swift and two Alto — have been recovered from their possession.

With the recovery of these vehicles, two cases of vehicle theft registered with the police stations of Sector 3 and Sector 34 have been solved.

Both accused are professional vehicle lifters and are having a criminal background.

Ajit has earlier been arrested in cases of vehicle thefts which are pending in court.

He is also involved in several vehicle theft cases in Delhi and Haryana. Their other accomplices are at large and yet to be arrested, the police said. The accused will be produced in court tomorrow.
