Travelling bright
It doesn't take a Mulberry Scotchgrain two-piece set or a Hartmann's Faux Alligator luggage to arrive in style. Even the most expensive baggage can be offset when claimed by someone sloppily dressed. Celebrities' airport looks invariably come under the scanner, but it shouldn't take mindful paparazzi to hit the terminal in style. How well you travel is more important than how well travelled are you!
"A lot of people think that being comfortable means being sloppy," designer Manoviraj Khosla shares the unfortunate, but popular perception among passengers. Having dressed the crew of Kingfisher Airlines, what if he got a chance to dress up the passengers this time? "It all depends…but travelling in style means being comfortable, practical and yet stylish. Any look that blends the twin factors…personally, I wear stretch jeans. Linen pants are another great option." The garment receives thumbs-up for reasons as varied and just as obvious. Designer Jatin Kochhar spends ten days every month travelling and tosses some of the best tips, which are backed by practical experience. "Linen pants are a great option as they also give coverage or lightweight denims. In India we are still opening up to the idea of light weight denims. And ladies should always have a stole or an unlined jacket, no matter what the weather. As for fabrics, cottons, voiles and pure georgettes work really well although a lot depends on the length of the travel." Unless you are taking a detox break in the Himalayas or a gambling vacation in Macau, travel means endless walking and endless waiting. Think check in, security, baggage claim and all that blah! Sports shoes can do wonders to the journey and Jatin Kochhar swears by the power of a great pair. "Always have three pairs while travelling; one being the sports shoes, a formal pair and floaters. Reserve the sports shoes for journey." Emma Roberts is known to keep her hands free with a stylish cross-body bag; Jessica Alba is a complete accessories girl when she travels by throwing in practical scarves and who says you can't wear a dress? All it takes is a sense of appropriateness. Opines designer Nida Mahmood, "Comfort comes foremost but yet not before style. It also needs to resonate with your personal style." While on the move, she relies on a comfortable pair of leggings, a cool tee, a waistcoat; a great pair of shades or even a funky scarf. "Keep the 'look non fussy' because it is anyways tiring while travelling. A large tote to throw in all essentials, a handful of water tight zip locks to ensure safety of phones, i-Pods etc and you are good to go." She adds, "Packing and dressing up completely depend on the season and place of travel. But for beaches I swear by shorts and flip flops, light cotton dresses with simple flat tie-up candles and a small satchel bag. As for cooler climes, it is a great pair of jacket coupled with boots." Designer Billy Reid, has been quoted as always packing a navy blue blazer. "It's that one thing I know I can always use if something comes up and I'm in a jam." It doesn't take long to stay stylish and it doesn't take a lot to stay practical, both at the same time!

A smile goes a mile
When will Salman Khan get married? This was the question of the hour on the sets of Gangs of Hasseepur and answering that is a panel that consists of two actors — a baba and a politician!
Manish Kumar Jagra plays NaMo in this new comedy show. Cultural coordinator at Chandigarh University, Gharuan, Manish is adept at playing politicians not only Namo but also Lal Krishna Advani and more. He would be seen enacting many other characters on the new show on ZEE TV. He does look quite like the politician much in news (that he credits to the make-up) and manners (that he has picked up watching hours of hours of rallies this election season). "Whatever role one does must be dil se," says this artiste who hugely admires Johnny Lever as a comedian. Raju Srivastav, his co-actor in Gangs of Hasseepur, is his current favourite. The show has another popular comedian Bharti Singh playing different characters. "Our tagline conveys whatever has made you cry so far will make you laugh now. Some of the issues that have touched the common man's life will be part of our
show."
Moment of pride
The creative producer of the show Pankaj Saraswat takes good deal of pride, "I don't believe in formulas. Double meaning humour is an easy way out. Satire born out of social issues has the ability to make us laugh and has longterm impact, precisely why Charlie Chaplin still has an edge over Laurel and Hardy, both being fabulous comedians of their times."
Pankaj, who heads Violet Picture Company, claims unabashedly that there is no comedian you will see on TV who is not his find. "We have always got the best talent from this region." Politicians look like an easy choice at the moment, but it's not here that Gangs of Hasseepur aims to stop. "We will move on to issues that are relevant to society in due course," says the man behind The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. With a number of comedy shows doing the rounds on the small screen, Pankaj has faith in the show he has put together. He is happy at Kapil and his show's success, "He is also my find. And we are in no competition with his show," he clears. Team Hasseepur hopes that it will not only tickle the funny bone of the common man, but also our netas — our country too is slowly opening up to political satire a la the Western world. The show also has other known faces such as Suresh
Menon, Tanishaa Mukherji, Ragini Khanna and Mandira Bedi, who sizzles in her short hair and swish blouses as a judge.

What an invention!
It's a search for the best inventions, which were unfortunately never made! Anyone who's been into science knows it is a long walk before the inventions reach the market. Coming summer, Discovery Science presents some long-forgotten inventions in its ground-breaking series Make Me A Millionaire Inventor.
Presenter Jem Stansfield, along with Dr Shini Somara, enters the homes and favourite places of original inventors only to bring their work to declassify them. "I'm there just to help all the other inventors who want to become millionaires. You get to see what it takes to come up with an idea and all the things you need to turn that into a product that you can sell in shops," he shares over what to expect from the show. He adds, "It's an incredible journey and one of the most difficult things a person can do is to turn an idea into a final product…for all that, you need to be so many things — an engineer, an artist, a showman, a salesman." It's a mission around Great Britain to find the patent libraries of lost dreams. Once they've unearthed the gems, they'll track down the original inventors and make them an offer hard to refuse. In every episode he pays a surprise visit to the original inventors, re-ignite their passion and find out what went wrong. Tailor-made support from a team of experts helps the inventors to structure a business plan, produce and market-test a prototype and finally coaches them on how to pitch. Finally, the moment of truth arrives. Will the inventors get their long-lost products to market? Will they prove they've got what it takes to their family and friends? Can they become millionaire inventors? Ideas rule Like he said, it's the most difficult thing to do - turning invention into a product. "There is also something very special about having an idea and then actually using a hand to build it. It's a really privileged thing to do," shares the UK-based television presenter and an aeronautical engineer from Bristol University. That's not where it ends. Having worked in a Czech school, been a shepherd in the Australian outback and a brief stint in stand-up comedy, among his inventions are a compressed air-powered motorcycle, boots that walk on water and vacuum cleaners to create Spider Man style climbing gloves. "I've always been sort of working, eversince I was a child, I've always been good at work. I'm not as brave to do different jobs but there's no job that you do and you do not learn from…I've just been quite busy I guess, but my main job is engineering." Surely, the love for science must be dating back to childhood. "I've loved the science side of things since childhood. I used to like reading about science and experiment, but when I was at the university I did like having fun. I did a lot of things; I like sports but also mathematics…but as a student, I was very cheeky and did have fun." Coming up are a few experiments for the Commonwealth Games. "In the summer, I'm going to be doing some things for the Commonwealth Games. Working out the science behind the event in the games would be good. I really enjoy that because I love sports and so far, I've not really put science and sport together, so I'm keen on doing that." Wouldn't it be great to play around with time? He laughs, "It would be so useful to be able to play with time a bit more; to be able to make an hour to three hours if you need to and shorten a day if you have to. I think being able to play with time would be the best invention for me." Well, you never know when that comes true! (Starting May 5, every
Monday to Thursday at 9 pm)

Smart choice
Every person has a sense of style in his own right. Yet, there are only a few who'd attract the second glances, who would have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be tuxedos, it could be torn jeans. Our this week's face in the crowd Renu Raguvanshi, 23, centre head at Morph Academy, is all about practicality.
Describe your sense of style … I would like to use three, four adjectives here. It is comfortable, practical, fashionable and long lasting. The latest addition in your wardrobe… For the summer, I have added trendy and professional but stylish apparels. Brand freak or street smart? I'm trend smart, I am not a brand freak. My profession itself calls for wearing clothes that include latest styles and trends. Choose one- sporty, glamorous or chic Well, I like to believe that I am glamorous. Your style icon … Selena Gomez. She looks very stunning in every style and outfit. Who's the worst dressed celebrity around? Vidya Balan. No doubt she is a good actress in Bollywood but she needs to put more efforts into her looks. One fashion trend you don't understand… Any trend which is not comfortable is beyond me. I don't understand them at all. Your take on accessories Fashion is not something that exists in clothes only. Jewellery also plays an integral part to enhance one's beauty. I put on accessories according to my dress and occasions. One thing that boosts your confidence… My mentors, my team; they all boost my confidence. You would love to be dressed up by…. I would love to be dressed up my favourite designers, which are Manish Malhotra and Neeta Lulla. — As told to Manpriya Singh |

Singing like a canary
Keeping in sync with the mood of the ongoing election scenario in the country, the members of the Samarpan Theatre Group released their debut song, Dhol Ka Pol, on YouTube. While the lyrics of the song addresses the socio-political and economic issues of the country, the video of the song, we stand informed, has been shot in a "nukad natak" format.
Talking about the song, HM Singh, the singer and songwriter of the song, shares that the song is basically a satire on the prevailing political and social scenario of the country, written from the public's perspective. HM Singh, who has given the music for Malkit Singh's original track Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha and music for almost all of Jaspal Bhatti's movies and television shows, says that the satire, which was quite typical of Jaspal Bhatti's shows, inspires the song.

star track
On December 14, 2013, Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan announced the end of their 13-year marriage. Earlier this week, the couple arrived at the Bombay Family Court in Bandra in separate cars, accompanied by their respective advocates, Dipesh Mehta and Mrunalini Deshmukh, and filed for divorce by mutual consent. A senior official at the court told us, "The paperwork was done before general public started trickling in. The divorce should come through in six months. Since it is by mutual consent, no hiccups are expected." While Deshmukh remained unavailable for comment, Mehta revealed that the next hearing will be on October 31, when the couple will be asked to confirm their decision. "If they don't change their minds by then, the divorce will be granted the same day," she said. This is the first time that a Bollywood couple is divorcing in an orderly and cordial manner because star wives seldom leave their husbands. Sussanne must be the first one to walk out of her marriage as it was not working. Hrithik and Sussanne had been together for 17 years, married for nearly thirteen years, and have two sons, Hridhaan and Hrehaan. Since the separation, the children have been living with their mother at her flat in Versova. According to Mehta, Sussanne will have custody of the kids. The lawyer, however, refused to disclose how much alimony she has been granted, saying, "That's strictly confidential." The buzz is that Hrithik tried his best to reconcile but Sussanne was adamant that they go their separate ways. Hrithik made one last-ditch attempt when he turned up for Hrehaan's birthday at her Versova home earlier this month. Hrithik and Sussanne were once Bollywood's picture-perfect couple. In 2011, when newspapers were abuzz about Hrithik's alleged closeness with his Kites co-star Barbara Mori, his wife (Sussanne) had said, "there is nothing wrong in our marriage". But according to sources close to the couple, that was the beginning of the end.
Alia turns an angel!
Riding high on the success of two back-to-back films, Alia Bhatt is the new face for the organization that works towards the well being of animals, PETA. While it was Richa Chadda recently who had been promoting the idea of vegetarianism, Alia has opted for the look of an angel. Promoting the concept of 'being an angel for animals', this new campaign of PETA encourages animal adoption with the tagline, Adopt, Never Buy. While Alia herself has always been open about her love for animals, she now has requested her fans too to adopt animals especially the ones thrown on the streets - undernourished and unsheltered.
This campaign not only concentrates on providing shelter to street animals but also aims at sterilising them and keeping them in a safe environment.

He was told that he could play other games and then they arranged for a car to take Affleck and his wife Jennifer Garner back to their hotel. The Argo star was in Vegas on a couple's trip with Garner for a quick romantic getaway before he starts shooting the Batman-Superman movie in Detroit. Playing a gangster
Get ready for another adrenaline pumping thrill ride this weekend as Encounter showcases the notorious story of underworld gangster Kallan, who was known as the king of arms and drug dealer. The power-packed episode will feature the talented actor Nandish Sandhu and the gorgeous Sara Khan in never seen before roles.
In the next episode, Kallan falls in love with a gorgeous girl named Aisha who is unaware of his underworld profession. Manipulation, planning and crudeness of Pasha lead to the encounter of Kallan and give birth to a new gangster Aisha! Commenting on the experience, Sara Khan said, "This is the first time ever that I have got such an interesting role in a show. It is that of a reserved and naïve girl who unknowingly falls in love with Kalan, the man who turns out to be a gangster and gets killed. So, to avenge his murder she herself becomes a gangster. Playing such a role is really amazing and I feel that I am shooting for a film. The way it has been shot and directed is really amazing." Commenting on his association with the show, Nandish Sandhu said, "This is the first time ever that I am essaying the role of a cop who believes that gangsters are also human beings and should be given a chance to correct their mistakes. He was the only cop during his time who had a different ideology - of not killing the small-time gangsters, but instead of using them to get to the roots of underworld. My experience of working on the sets of Encounter was great."

If your birthday is May 4...
This year heralds plenty of changes, especially on the work front. The changes may be good or bad, but you should do your best to adapt and move ahead. If borrowing money has been on your agenda, get a loan, especially if this is about business. Keep away from the courts or any kind of litigation and try settling disputes, if any, out of court. Being ambitious may be good, but remain practical and pragmatic while setting your annual goals because if you set the bar too high you may only end up exhausting yourself and your resources, to no avail. Sudden unexpected expenses might exert financial pressure. Positive colours: Dark-blue, Dark-grey. Select days: Saturday. Favourable numbers: 2, 4, 8. Gems Recommended: Gomed, Cat's Eye, Tiger Stone. Charity on birthday: Donate wheat, gur to the needy or at any religious place today.
You share your birthday with Kunal Basu (May 4, 1956), an author who has written three acclaimed novels - The Opium Clerk (2001), The Miniaturist (2003) and Racists (2006). His most recent work is a collection of short stories, The Japanese Wife (2008), the title story of which has been made into a film.
