Tribune News Service

Dera Bassi, April 29
Senior leaders of the main political parties, including Congress, SAD and BJP, gave campaigning a miss in this Assembly segment falling under the Patiala Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency. Campaigning for the elections ended in Punjab yesterday.

Former MLA of Banur Jasjit Singh Bunny, son of late SAD leader Capt Kanwaljit Singh, did not turn up in the segment. Bunny was elected in a by-election held after his father died in a car crash on March 29, 2009. He had defeated Congress candidate Deepinder Singh Dhillon.

Congress leader Jasjeet Singh Randhawa, who lost to SAD’s Narinder Sharma in March 2012 Assembly elections, also did not visit the area after the defeat.

RR Bhardwaj, who was vice-chairman of the state development board during Capt Amarinder Singh’s government and was politically active in the constituency as he was also an aspirant for the ticket this time, was not spotted anywhere all through the campaigning

Manpreet Kaur alias Dolly, daughter of late Capt Kanwaljit Singh, who quit the SAD and unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly elections from Dera Bassi as an independent candidate was, however, a bit active as she campaigned for the Congress candidate for the Patiala constituency, Preneet Kaur. After losing the Assembly election as independent candidate, Dolly joined the Congress under MP Preneet Kaur.

However, the sitting MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Narinder Sharma campaigned for the SAD candidate Deepinder Singh Dhillon, while Jaspal Singh, a former sarpanch of Zirakpur, and Kuljeet Singh Randhawa, president of Punjab Raj Parishad, urged voters to vote for the Congress candidate Preneet Kaur. The three are leaving no stone unturned to ensure their party candidate’s win.
