Charred body of married woman found

Kalka, April 21
The Pinjore Police have claimed to have recovered a charred body of a woman from Rampur Jangi village of Pinjore Block. The parents of the woman have alleged a foul play. According to police sources, the hundred per cent burnt body of Rekha (27) has been found from the kitchen of the house.

The police have sent the body for an autopsy at the Kalka CHC. Rekha got married to Narinder of Rampur Jangi village six years ago. The couple has two children.

Rajan, brother of the deceased, alleged that his sister was subjected to physical tortured by her husband, who is an alcoholic. Rekha was working in some private company to make ends meet, said her brother. — OC

Witnesses examined

Statements of three witnesses were recorded in the court in which five dismissed UT constables are accused of raping and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. The three witnesses who deposed before the court today included two Inspectors and a constable of the Chandigarh Police.

Apart from recording of the statements of the prosecution witnesses, the prosecution also submitted a hand-written application in the court along with four compact discs (CD) with the alleged recorded conversations that took place between her and the wife of one of the accused. In the conversation, the wife was allegedly pressurising the victim to change her statement. She requested the court to take the CDs on record.

The victim had retracted from her statements and was declared hostile on March 21.Then on April 2, she took a U-turn and said that she retracted from her statement on March 21 under pressure.

The case was today adjourned by the court for resumed hearing till April 28.

Director of school booked
Was keeping specimens of animals illegally in lab

Mohali, April 21
The local police today booked a director of a private school at Kharar for possessing specimen of animals illegally in the school’s biology laboratory. A raid was conducted by a team of People for Animals (PFA), here.

The accused, Col CS Cheema, director of Indus Public School, has been booked under Section 428 of the IPC at Kharar Police Station (Sadar).

Giving details, Saurabh Gupta, raiding officer, PFA, Delhi, said that the raid was conducted following a tip off. “We recovered 8 to10 specimens, some were very rare such as starfish, shark and esparis from their laboratory”, said Saurabh Gupta.

He added that the raid was conducted jointly by the PFA, Kharar police and officials of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Delhi.

Abhishek Sharma hogs limelight on Day 2

Amritsar lad Abhishek Sharma studded the day with his all-round performance against Ropar during a match of the ongoing ML Markan Trophy for Boys (Under-16), today.

On Day 2 of the meet, Amritsar emerged victorious against Ropar. The team scored 223 runs in their first innings in 68.3 overs. Abhishek Sharma pumped in 163 runs off 179 balls, studded with 19 boundaries and 6 sixes, and claimed four wickets for 27 runs to damage the opponent team’s innings.

For Ropar, Resham Sharma took five-wicket for 66 runs, while Navpreet Singh supported him and claimed three wickets for 57 runs.

Chasing the target, Ropar’s batting faced a tough time in reverting to the deliveries of Amritsar’s bowlers. Amit Sharma (five for 23 runs) and Abhishek Sharma (four for 27 runs) bowled brilliantly and restricted Ropar’s innings to a mere total of 76 runs in 56 overs.

Taking a 14- run lead, Amritsar lad posted 219 runs in their second innings for seven wickets in 69.2 overs. Rahul Kashyap scored 97 runs off 152 balls, inclusive of 15 boundaries. For Ropar, Resham Sharma made a comeback and claimed three for 73 runs, while Navpreet Singh took two for 66 runs. Chasing a target of 367 runs, Ropar was left struggling as the team lost three wickets in the initial stages. Amit Sharma, two for 8 runs, and Raghav, one for 0, were the main wicket takers for Amritsar.

In another match, Chandigarh team bowled out Patiala on 200 runs in 78.3 overs. Ibbadat Thaman (57 runs), Prince Balwant Rai (35 runs) and Abhay Tipnis (25 runs) remained the main run-getters for Patiala, while for Chandigarh side Tavleen Singh guided the team at commanding position. Tavleen claimed six wickets for 62. Mandeep Singh with claiming two for 34 runs was the other main wicket taker.

In reply, Chandigarh failed to build up the momentum and bundled out at 118 runs in 59.5 overs. For Patiala, Tejpreet Singh (five for 32 runs) and Ankrit Mann (two for 18 runs) were the most successful bowlers, while for Chandigarh Yogesh Nathani (46 runs) and Kunaldeep Singh (26 runs) remained the main run-getters.

In their second innings, Patiala team scored 90 runs for two wickets in 59 overs, with Kunal Yadav (31 runs) and Prince Balwant Rai (46 runs) contributing the lion’s share.

During a match at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, the host team scored 258 runs in 76.4 overs against Jalandhar, while the latter posted 226 runs. Riding high on 118 runs, first wicket partnership between duo Nirmal Singh (40 runs) and Shubman Gill (101 runs) the team passed the 25 runs mark. Shubman hit 17 boundaries during the match.

For Jalandhar, Prerit Datta (five for 53 runs) and Vikas Yadav (two for 72 runs) were the main wicket takers. Chasing a modest total, Jalandhar folded up their innings for 226 runs in 123.1 overs. Azam Nazar (55 runs), Parath Aggarwal (47 runs) and Varun Gupta (38 runs) scored a principal share for Jalandhar. For Mohali, off-spinner Akash Dahri had a field day and claimed six for 83 runs while, left arm spinner Ashish Bisht grabbed three for 66 runs. In their second innings, Mohali team scored 32 runs for no loss of wickets.

Industries assn beat AKZO by 53 runs

Corporate cricket teams from Mohali Industries Association, Edifecs XI and HK Enterprises registered win in their respective matches during the T-20 Cricket Championship. The matches were played at the cricket grounds of Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, today.

In the first match, Mohali Industries Association defeated AKZO Nobel India Limited by 53 runs. Batting first, the winning team batted well and posted 167 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

Jaswinder started-off well and scored 40 runs off 35 balls. He was equally supported by Daman, who scored 39 runs.

For bowling side, Vijay claimed two wickets whereas, Jatinder managed to take one wicket. Chasing a healthy total, the AKZO Limited scored 114 runs with Sandeep (21 runs) and Jatinder (20 runs) contributing major share.

For MIA, Sanjay Jain took three wickets while, Gurvinder and Pardeep claimed a wicket each.

In the second match, Edifecs XI defeated Siemens by 62 runs. The latter team scored 211 runs for three wickets in 20 overs. For batting line-up, Raman Thakur played well and scored 68 runs. Abhishek made 48 runs.

For Siemens, Harpreet took two wickets while, Karun claimed one wicket. In reply, Siemens Limited bundled out for 150 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Ashok (62 runs) and Dinesh (21 runs) contributed the lion’s share.

For the bowling side, Gaurav and Kanak claimed two wickets each.

In the third match, HK Enterprises defeated Tube Products of India by 93 runs. Batting first, the winning side scored 232 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. Lovey (70 runs) and Deepak (36 runs) ensured healthy total for the team. For the bowling side, Rocky claimed two wickets and Mandeep grabbed one wicket.

Chasing the target, the losing team scored 140 runs.

For the winning side, skipper Monu took a five- wicket haul and Lovey claimed two wickets.

Seven-year-old creates ripples in the world of wrestling

Seven-year-old Guru Neelkanth Aher, a student of Saupins’ School, Sector 32, is looking forward to building his future in the world of wrestling. Aher started nurturing his passion for wrestling soon after he turned four.

He is currently attached with the Kapishwar Akhada, running under the Chandigarh Police Akhada, at the Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh. He also performs seasonal practice in Mahrashtra at the Ghankar Galli Talim Sangha in Nasik.

In Chandigarh, he sharpens his skills under the supervision of pehalwaan Raja and Vijender.

“I bagged the title of the Youngest Wrestler of India. I have participated in competitions held at various places including tricity region, Maharashtra and Delhi. I was also felicitated by famous Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar in 2010 in Chandigarh and in 2013 in Nasik,” said the young wrestler.

Coming from a family of sportspersons, Aher’s father DB Aher was a national-level boxer and chess champion, his grandfather BS Aher was a wrestler and a chief patron of the sport in the initial days. Guru`s mother Dr Srishty Neelkanth is a national-level shooting champion.

“My family makes sure that my day starts and ends with a wholesome diet structured. I stay away from junk food. Playing wrestling is my only passion and I will leave no stone unturned to reach to the top,” said Aher.

“It is an honor to have a student and a sportsperson like Neelkanth Aher. We will support him at every step,” said the principal of the school, Surita Sharma.

Summer Golf Academy Programme from April 25

Arjuna award recipient golfer Harmeet Kahlon will start the Summer Golf Academy Programme at the Chandigarh Golf Club from April 25, here. Harmeet, also the director of the Academy of Golf Chandigarh Golf Club, will head the programme for two months.

“Around 3 to 5 students, per group, will be inducted in the 10-day programme and different batches, as per different age groups and proficiencies, will be given time. “Groups as well as individual sessions, as required will also be conducted for both boys and girls,” said Harmeet.

The fees to attend the camp would vary from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000 (per hour), as per requirements of the attendees, said the golfer.

The summer camp will also have a separate daily honorary session for the upcoming caddies, who have already been permitted to play on the course by the committee as a part of the Chandigarh Golf Club’s and Harmeet’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Club organises Captain’s Day, felicitates 300 golfers

The Chandigarh Golf Club organised an annual Captain’s Day function on Sunday. Over 300 golfers were awarded with various tittles on the occasion. A fashion show was also organised to add glamour to the celebrations.

A tournament titled ‘Captain's Day Golf Tournament’ was also organised. Balwant Brar with 41 points won the first position in the 9-16 handicap category while, Captain GS Ghuman with 40 points secured the runner-up spot. Dimple Minocha lifted the ladies nett title while, S Ratia secured second berth in the category.

About 1,200 members of the club attended the event. In view of the upcoming Golf Club elections, two members in fray of the president’s post took full advantage of the event and both, along with their team, wooed the voters. Voting for post of the president will take place on April 27. Two former presidents, Tegvir Singh Sibia and Birinder Singh Gill, are fighting for attaining the top post. Besides 21 members are also contesting for the 11-member Executive Body Committee. Last year, 1,142 members exercised their franchise. There are 1,800 members in the club.

Netball tournament from April 28

The Chandigarh North District Netball Association will conduct the 6th Kailash Bahl Netball Trophy for Chandigarh Junior State Netball Championship for Boys and Girls, under the aegis of Netball Association of Chandigarh, here.

The competition will be organised at KB DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, from April 28 to 30. Players born on or after January 1, 1995, for under-19 and January 1, 1999, for under 14 are eligible to participate in the championship.

The interested teams are advised to send their entries to principal of KB DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, Madhu Bahl, on or before April 26 (3 pm). The fixtures will be available from the reception of the school on April 27 at 3pm.
