So far, senior advocate Anmol Ratan Sidhu and advocate Ranjan Lakhanpal are contesting the post of president of one of the oldest and leading bar associations of the country.

The elections, scheduled to be held on April 24, are also expected to witness a keen contest for the post of secretary between advocate Govinder Brar and Saurav Khurana.

Chandigarh, April 19
To elect the new president, 1,800 members of the Chandigarh Golf Club will conduct ballot on April 27 from 11.30 am to 5 pm. Tegvir Singh Sibia, who also contested the election for the same post last year, is standing against Birinder Singh Gill, a member of the club since past 29 years. Sibia, an agriculturist, and Gill, a lawyer, have promised to bring transparency in the club and have also laid stress on finalising the issue of lease. Besides these two, there are 21 members contesting for the elections for the 11-member executive-body committee. Last year, the club witnessed a record turnout with a total of 1,142 members casting their votes, making it to the highest polling ever since the formation of the club.

We have two members for the post of president and a total of 21 members for the post of 11-member executive committee. Earlier, there were 23 members and two among them have withdrawn their names because of personal reasons. Like previous year, the polls will be conducted keeping in mind all rules and regulations.

— Lt Col RS Mangat, returning officer

Birinder Singh Gill“My emphasis will be to bring the Chandigarh Golf Club course among the top 10 golf courses of India. Lifting existing infrastructure and improving facilities are my main objectives.

During my previous terms, I had worked for the welfare of members and uplifting the standards of this club.

I will stress on increasing social interaction of the members and would make sure to build a golfing environment.

Social events, related to golf, will be organised to entertain all the members.

Another thing, including increase in footfall of members and revision of bar and restaurant rate, will remain on the top of my preference lift.

As the club has produced North India’s best of the golfers, I will also provide new exposure for the budding golfers. I have worked for the welfare of the club and, in future, my main motive will remain to work for the same.” — Birinder Singh Gill

“Past is past. In 2014, I am sure of winning the elections. During my previous tenures, I have worked towards improving the status of the Chandigarh Golf Club. It’s a fact that, during my tenure, the club attracted tremendous financial and infrastructural improvements.

Also, a new computerised irrigation system was introduced. My actions speak louder than words. I will stand by my words and promises. We have ‘Roll on Plan’ and with all intention of putting a ‘Think Tank’, my team will carry forward the name of the club in the list of best clubs.

Resolving issues pertaining to ongoing lease problem, providing good services at bar and restaurant, providing good health services, making greens more exploring and exciting, better golf-playing environment, taking care of caddies-infrastructure-facilities and junior golfers will be my main motive.” — Tegvir Singh Sibia
