2 convicted in drug cases

Chandigarh, April 4
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini S Nagpal today convicted Sanjay, a resident of Dadumajra Colony, and Bano for possessing drugs.

According to the prosecution, Sanjay was arrested on May 3, 2007, at a check point in Kajheri. The police had recovered 65 grams of smack from his possession. Sanjay was granted bail by the court but he did not appear on the date of hearing, following which he was declared a proclaimed offender. He was again arrested on May 12, 2013.

The court today convicted Sanjay. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Monday.

In a separate case, Bano was arrested from near Karan Taxi Stand near Dadu Majra on February 12, 2012. Fifteen grams of smack was recovered from her.

BPCL enter hockey semis

Chandigarh, April 4
Host Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) hammered Engineers India Limited (EIL) by 3-1 to confirm their berth in the semi-finals of the 32nd PSEB Inter-Petroleum Hockey Tournament being played at Dhayan Chand Hockey Stadium in Mohali today.

BPCL, maintaining their upper hand in the game, forged ahead in the third minute as William Xalxo scored a field goal. The EIL team equalised the score in the 9th minute through Pawan Sharma.

However, BPCL bounced back and increased their tally in the 15th minute through a brilliant field goal by Sher Singh.

In the second half, BPCL was again on a scoring spree and consolidated their lead in the 40th minute through a goal by Amir Khan.

EIL combined well in the later stages of the match to break BPCL defence but could not find the target.

Squash meet gets under way

Chandigarh, April 4
The Chandigarh State Squash Rackets Meet got under way at the Lake Sports complex here today. In the U-17 boys’ qualifier round, Rishab Jain routed Karamjit Singh in straight three sets (11-1, 11-4, 11-2). In the second match, Yashwir Hooda defeated Amit Kumar in straight three sets (11-6, 11-5, 11-1). In the third match, Rajan Brar defeated Nikhil Verma by 3-0 (11-2, 11-0, 11-1). Vidhur Ahuja defeated Sartaj Singh by 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-2).

In boys’ U-11 quarter final, Maurya defeated Fateh Singh in straight sets with 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-2). In the women’s open category, Priya Gupta defeated Shivangi Raina in straight sets (11-5, 11-1, 11-1). In the girls’ U-13 pre-quarters, Joyta Banerjee beat Ankita in straight sets (11-1, 11-7, 11-3), while Pooja defeated Anahat Dhillion with 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-6).

In the girls’ U-13 quarter final, Jannia Singh defeated Harshita by 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-1), while Jyoti beat Joyata with 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-1).

Anjali routed Shamita Yadav in straight sets (11-5, 11-3, 11-5) and Rubyat defeated Pooja in straight sets (11-1, 11-4, 11-1). In the boys’ U-13 pre-quarter final, Anurag defeated Hiteshwar Sidhu with 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 11-9). Vardhan Mehta defeated Ekom Saida in straight sets (11-4, 11-0, 11-4). In the boys’ U-13 quarter final, Aman defeated Vardhan (11-1, 11-1, 11-2).

Shivam defeated Raunak by 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-2). Akhilesh Kumar defeated Ishaan Nayar with 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9), while Prithvi Singh defeated Anurag in straight sets (11-0, 11-2, 11-0).

In boys’ U-15 pre-quarter matches, Jaskirat defeated Abhitesh Singh in straight sets (11-8, 11-8, 11-9), while Ankush defeated Aryaman Dhiman in straight sets (11-5, 11-2, 11-8). In third pre-quarter, Anirudh defeated Adesh Grewal by 3-0 (11-9, 11-3, 11-1), while Kanav got a walkover.

In the boys’ U-19 pre-quarter, Aayush defeated Adwietya by 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-1), while Vidhur defeated Seshant (11-0, 11-5, 11-4). In the boys’ U-19 quarter-final, Rishab defeated Mehul in straight three sets. In the last match of the day, Rajan Brar routed Manish in straight sets (11-4, 11-4, 10). — TNS

Wrestling competition held

Gulzar Gold Cup Wrestling Competition was held at Gulzar Wrestling Akhara, Zirakpur, today.

In the 55-kg category, first position was bagged by Badal, while in the 68-kg category, Surjit from Delhi clinched the first spot.

In the 78-kg category, Hardeep from Punjab Armed Police, Jalandhar, won gold. In the 88-kg category, Deepak from Delhi bagged the first spot, while in the 88-plus category Gursewak from Khanna won the first position.

CLTA to hold tennis meet from April 7

Chandigarh, April 4
The Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) will organise CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament for Boys & Girls (U-12 and U-16) from April 7 to April 11.

The organisers said the qualifying matches for the event would be played on April 5 and 6.

Around 300 participants from all over the country would take part in the tournament.

High-ranked players who represented the Indian junior team would also be taking part in the tournament.

The qualifying first and second round matches for boys and girls will be played on the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) complex at 9 AM on Saturday.

Telefunken Club register thumping victory

A fabulous batting display by Delhi Ranji Trophy player Yogesh Nagar 102 (not out) (83 balls, 8x4s and 4x6s) and a fifer by left arm spinner Mayank Dagar (5/32) enabled Telefunken Cricket Club to register a 117-run victory over Kishan Ganj Gymkhana.

With this, the club entered pre-quarter finals of the 24th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament being played at RSKP grounds here today. Yogesh Nagar bagged the man of the match award.

Telefunken Cricket Club: 285 for 5 in 40 overs (Yogesh Nagar 102 (not out), Praveen Yadav 46, Deepak Khatri 33 (not out), Gopal Nain 3/41 and Arun Chaprana 2/59.

Kishan Ganj Gymkhana: 168 for 10 in 36.5 overs (Arun Chaprana 39, Deepak Chandila 37, Mayank Dagar 5/32 and Sunny Sehrawat 3/14).
