Driver commits suicide at Kalka
Kalka, March 29 Villagers informed Gurdial Singh, numberdar of the village, who further informed the police. A forensic team also visited the spot. The police have recovered driving license and shoes from the site of incident. The police said Babu Ram had not gone to his house for two days. The police have sent the body to Kalka CHC. —OC
1 held for raping 5-yr-old girl
Mohali (Dera Bassi), March 29 The accused has been identified as Chandrika from district Chhapra in Bihar. He works at a local factory here and used to stay in the neighbourhood of the victim’s family at Mubarakpur. The police arrested him from a local tavern. The victim is undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Dera Bassi. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered against Chandrika at the Dera Bassi Police Station. He would be produced before the court tomorrow. — OC |

Parents held for forcing girl into prostitution
Panchkula, March 29 The victim, with the help of the boy from Yamunanagar, approached the police last night and told them that her parents had sold her to pimps in Zirakpur. The police arrested the parents Vicky Sharma and Priya Sharma from Jalandhar. Station house officer of the Sector 5 police station Inspector Malkit Singh said Vicky is the victim’s stepfather. “The girl in her complaint said a deal of Rs 20,000 was struck by her parents with the pimp of Zirakpur, Rahul,” said Singh. Two other Chandigarh-based pimps are also involved in the crime and have been booked by the police. Police teams have already been sent to get hold of them. The police have registered a case under Section 372 (selling a minor for prostitution), 373 (buying a minor for prostitution), 376-g-(gang rape) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO). |

Constable dies as service gun goes off accidentally
Chandigarh, March 29 Singh belonged to the 3rd Battalion of the IRB, Punjab, and was deployed in the PNB for the past two years. The victim was rushed to the PGI where doctors declared him brought dead. Singh was reportedly cleaning his weapon when it went off accidentally. The bullet passed through his nose and then entered his skull, killing him instantly. The SLR that went off accidentally has been seized. The deceased was a native of Muktsar district in Punjab. His body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPc. 4 hurt in accidental firing
In yet another firing incident, four persons were injured when the gun of a security guard of the State Bank of India at the PGI went off accidentally on the bank premises. The security guard, Kashmira Singh, has been arrested for negligence and his weapon has been seized. The injured persons, identified as Sukhdev, Gurkirat, Manmeet Singh and Nirmaljeet Kaur, were admitted to the PGI. A case has been registered. |

Panchkula, March 29 The police said ASI Bharat Bhushan Lal, who was earlier posted as the in-charge of the Sector 21 police post, was booked for favouring some people against whom a complaint was moved by RK Lohan. Lohan had alleged that the ASI shielded the people against whom the former had complained. Eight others were also booked against whom Lohan lodged a complaint. — TNS |

6th Punjab Deaf and Dumb Football Tournament Deepankar Sharda Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, March 29 A total of five teams-Barnala, Ropar, Mohali, Chandigarh and Patiala participated in the championship. Barnala lifted the trophy. It defeated Ropar 2-0 in the final of the tournament. Ankit, Sukhjinder hogged limelight in the tournament and displayed exceptionally well game skills. In the hard line match, Mohali beat Patiala 3-1. Sharanjeet Singh of Barnala was adjudged the best player of the tournament. “It’s for the first time that we have organised the tournament in Chandigarh. Though it has been organised in various cites of Punjab earlier. Our main purpose is to encourage the youngsters. For this particular tournament, they had undergone a precise practice sessions,” said Gupreet Bedi, head, Technical Committee. |
Local kabaddi teams register win
Chandigarh, March 29 In the womens’ category, the local team defeated Rajasthan 12- 8, while the mens’ team trounced Maharashtra 24-6. Raider Harjeet collected 12 points for Chandigarh. In other matches of mens’ category, Delhi defeated Bihar 28-11 with Pamma (9 points), Supinder (5 points) and Mohammad (6 points) collecting the major points. In one-sided match, Tamil Naidu blanked Andhra Pradesh 28-8. Vadila scored 12 points and Purila claimed 8 points for the winning side. Earlier, in other matches, Punjab defeated Uttar Pradesh 26-10, Haryana beat Rajasthan 28-16 , Delhi defeated Tamil Naidu 15-5 and Maharashtra defeated Andhra Pradesh 13- 9. Handball championship final today
Chandigarh, March 29 In the semifinal (womens’ category) played today, Coaching Centre Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, beat Coaching Centre Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, 18-17. For the winning side, Manisha contributed four goals, while Madhu and Kavita pumped in three goals each. For losing side, Khila (7 points) and Smriti (2 points) reduced the margin. In another match, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, went down against Coaching Centre, Sector 42, 14-8 goals. Khusboo (5 points) initiated the team’s win and Jyoti contributed two goals.
