Bura na maano Holi hai….
Holi is here, like every year bringing with it its fair share of mirth. Colours are everywhere; walk carefully lest a water balloon trips you off. As you gear up to colour your loved ones, some celebrities from the region walk down the memory lane to talk about the popular festival.
Fun…the safe & sound way We loved the songs by lyricist Irshad Kamil in Ashiqui 2 and Highway, he is gearing up to give more memorable numbers in his upcoming films —Kaanchi, Holiday, Shaatir and Happy New Year. When he started his innings in Bollywood, festival songs were not as much party of films as much as they used to, but his Chhan ke mohalla from Action Replayy is picturised on a Holi sequence. Holi person or not? I love to see all the action but like to keep my distance from it. Best/worst Holi memory I was at Hostel Number 1 at Panjab University, I played Holi from 9 am- 5pm with my friends, surrounded by loads of colours, music and fun. But when I hit the bed in my room after shower at five, I woke up only in the morning. Favourite Holi song in a film There are many songs that I like but Holi aayi re kanhai from Mother India tops the list. Absolute ‘no’ for you on Holi Work, it’s a day for family and friends. Students take time off their board preparations, schools and offices are closed and colours make life beautiful. Ever tried bhaang? I did, in fact for my most memorable Holi at PU, it was the bhaang effect that I slept throughout the evening and night. Tip to the Holi revellers Bura na mano Holi hai is ok but be considerate enough not to hurt someone while having fun yourself. Holi in style Gaurav Chaudhary aka Parmeet of Bani Ishq Da Kalma is a Delhi boy who had fun every Holi. He remembers taking that three hour permission to play during his board exams. This handsome hunk had his gang grown by numbers as willing boys and girls painted the town with colours of fun and frolic. Holi person or not? I am totally a Holi person, but I need to be with my fukrey dosts from Delhi to enjoy this fest to the fullest. Best/worst Holi memory Unlike society celebrations in Mumbai, in Delhi people come out on streets just like in Chandigarh. I would be there too with my gang of friends, all ready with colours, water and eggs. We would have rocking celebration together. Favourite Holi song in a film Classic Rang barse bheege chunarwali. Absolute ‘no’ for you on Holi No teasing girls, Holi khelo par pyar se (play Holi with love). Ever tried bhaang? Never, I have seen so much happening around with those who tried it, that I have stayed away from it. Tip to the Holi revellers Enjoy to the hilt, play with family and friends Fun with colours Actor, producer Jonita Doda is happy at bagging two more Bollywood films and a sari endorsement recently. This Chandigarh girl would make most of what City Beautiful offers on this lovely festival before work took her to different parts of the country. Holi person or not? I would love Holi when I was a kid, now I am just a tika person. Best/worst Holi memory As a kid we would hide and throw water balloons. All the families and friends would gather and have fun with colours and eat as much as we could on stalls set up especially for the day. Once, one of my friends who had come from Canada took almost four days to wash off the colours post Holi. Favourite Holi song in a film Balam pichkari from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, one can dance on it
tirelessly. Absolute ‘no’ for you on Holi Paints that don’t go away. Ever tried bhaang? I couldn’t dare to; I am too scared to behave funny afterwards. Tip to the Holi revellers Make it a friendly affair, just colours and fun within limits. Then people who are now scared to venture out too can come out in open and be a part of merriment. And, yes, save and value water.
Fun all the way Gul Panag is enjoying the new challenge that she has set for herself for. Campaigning takes most of her time but she is hoping to be a part of Hola Mohalla this Holi. Holi person or not? I used to be, I do play Holi still but not the frenzied way that I used to when I was a kid. Best/worst Holi memory I was five; and my dad was posted in Patiala. I was too young to love it all but the way my parents enjoyed the festival with their friends, I thought I too will play Holi like this when I am grow up. I did live that dream couple of years back in Delhi. Nothing on the downside except that I couldn’t play Holi last year. Favourite Holi song from the film As clichéd as it can get Rang barsey bheege chunar wali picturised on Amitabh Bachchan. Absolute ‘no’ for you on Holi No bhaang for me, I stay away from all the intoxicants that can make me lose senses. Ever tried bhaang? Willingly no. Once I did feel dizzy after having thandai and got to know that someone had put bhang in it. I just scooted from there. Tip to the Holi revellers Girls — oil your hair well, have fun. mona@tribunemail.com

Golden girl
There is always an underlying thought that comes along with the mention of Sunny Leone. It’s a thought that invites strong opinions and unspoken questions.
Never mind some decent success at roles in independent films and a diminutive acceptance in the mainstream. “It’s such an amazing feeling to be a part of the song that the whole country is going crazy for. I listen to it more in the car that stands next to me on the roads than anywhere else,” she shares, while in Chandigarh to promote Raagini MMS 2 and seemingly upbeat on the new found high from her hit track Baby Doll. It’s an unexpected success that she’s leaving no opportunity of cashing on. All the while using liberal words of Hindi mingled with a strong accent. ‘Hanj sab theek hai,’ she greets, even before taking a seat and while declaring, “Main hoon baby doll,” she gestures, while flanked by her husband Daniel Weber. Crowds need no provocation beside her name to gather outside the venue and the cameras to go berserk while clicking her. For the film, that she says “is an action sequence,” the girl turns into a ghost. While it did take some amount of preparation for the role, she is not ready to give much away. “If I told you the names of the movies that I saw to prepare for my role, I’d give away my character.” She adds, “But I can assure you that it is going to be a scary movie. There are many different scenes that we have shot in a very different way….I’ve been seeing horror films since childhood and still feel scared on watching them.” In between the liberal dose of jokes and humour, she doesn’t shirk from sharing some straight notes. Perhaps, there’s no choice. “If I get tagged then I get tagged. There is nothing I can do about it…What’s wrong in wearing a bikini. A girl should be sexy…When I go see a film, even I like watching Hrithik Roshan with his shirt off.” While alternating between the controversies over steamy scenes and sexy characters, there is a desire to move onto image breaking films. “I don’t really have a dream role. I love acting. My dream is acting. But the more intense and difficult the role, the more I enjoy it. If anything is offered to me outside the purview of what I have done so far, it would be great.” Coming up is a documentary on her past and the journey so far. “It’s a documentary on my journey from where I was born to the entertainment industry in the US and then over to Bollywood.” It’s time to let go but not before she has spoken a few words on Honey Singh and the city. “Yo Yo Honey Singh. He is very professional and he worked really hard…My father is from Chandigarh. I can understand Punjabi but not speak it.” The song might have redefined her but nevertheless, is she happy being perceived the way she is? “You know, I was watching this music channel the other day and it had so many provocative videos. I don’t think I’m doing anything that the other girls are not doing.” Some things are best left unsaid. Like some questions are best left unanswered. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Game over mug
Get into a cafe for a cup of coffee. Now, either get absorbed in the books or newspapers lieing on the table or indulge in a game of scrabble and chess.
Cafes are nothing short of a refreshing break, and games add more to the leisure, something that the visitors feel. Shantanu, who works with a private firm as a marketing executive generally visits the cafe during the afternoon break with a colleague and often plays a game of chess. "We come out to take a break during the afternoon. As chess is lying around, we try our hands for a game or two," he adds. On the other hand, Raghav who is working with one of the café says that people often come to play the game of chess. “It is good, for the longer they stay, the more chances are they would order another coffee or other items on the menu. So, guests also have a good time and it keeps our bill books busy," he adds. Many of the cafes also offer books on general interest. “Such additional things for relaxation do help in building customer loyalty,” shares another cafe owner.

Be safe this Holi
Dr Vikas Sharma So you're all set for the Holi bash? But enjoy holi with certain caution: Give a thought to the chemicals used in Holi colours. Holi is a festival of colours, no doubt but what if the colours leave their frightful tell tale signs. Skin pigmentation, rashes, eczema are some of the after effects of the use of synthetic colours thanks to the use of synthetic raisins, PPT and lead in them. One should always be on alert while playing Holi because, if accident happens, it can ruin the spirit of that day. Also, one should always remember to use the small but important precautions so that no one that you know or love gets hurt unknowingly. The chemicals used in Holi colours consist of synthetic dyes and in many cases mica dust too that can cause major skin allergies. Did you know that your favourite green colour contains copper sulphate? Were you aware, that silver colour contains aluminium bromide, red has mercury sulphate not to mention lead oxide which is so much in use in black colour? Non synthetic or herbal colours are safe and more environment friendly since they're prepared from natural extracts of flowers and vegetables. Earlier, natural colours were made from flowers, leaves and seasonal herbs. But over the years, due to industrialisation and commercialisation, these natural colours have been replaced by synthetic colours. These synthetic colours often contain heavy metals, acids, alkalis, powdered glass, asbestos, chalk paste etc. The shimmering given to these colours is by mica and powdered glass, which are meant for industrial use. Such chemicals can wreak havoc on skin and hair, in the form of allergy, irritants, rashes, infection and much more. The symptoms may vary from mild irritation in form of itching or dryness, which can in turn lead to more irritation and itching, rashes or allergic dermatitis. There can be severe itching and burning sensation, redness and in some cases, even skin burns. The hair damage can be in form of itching, redness, dryness and scalp infections. The delayed affects could be loss of hair, thinning of hair, coarse, thin and lustreless hair texture. One should be extra careful for children, especially infants, as they have every sensitive skin. Caution is also for pregnant ladies, as chemicals get absorbed in the skin and can affect the normal course of pregnancy. Play safe:
It is ironical that while whole year we take good care of our skin and appearance, on Holi we joyfully damage it with toxic colours. So, this Holi lets say no to these harmful colours, and instead use natural colours made from flowers, leaves and herbs. These may cost you more than the synthetic colours, but they ensure good health, skin and safety. (Dr Sharma is a Chandigarh based dermatologist.) |

Not so dark
Renupreet Kaur A little treat occasionally can fend off huge binges on calorie and sugar-laden foods. A well planned diet can create space for chocolate eaters. Dark chocolate is a very popular type of chocolate, which is made without using any milk solids. Dark chocolate that has been flavoured with essences or spices can make a nice, calorie-free change from plain dark chocolate. Brighter side Dark chocolate has many health benefits similar to fruits, vegetables and tea. The key is to eat dark chocolate in moderation and also to choose dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, as this provides nutrition. Dark chocolates contain flavonoids that have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions in bodily functions. The higher the percentage of cocoa in the bar, many go as high as 70 per cent or more, the better nutritional benefit you will receive. All for class
Every person has a sense of style in his own right. Yet, there are only a few who'd attract the second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be tuxedos, it could be torn jeans. Our this week's face in the crowd Priya, 21 year old, English honours student, believes in dressing well for all occasions. Describe your sense of style. My sense of style is guarded by the self-awareness of my body type, I choose accordingly. I also make sure the outfit is classy and elegant! Latest addition in the wardrobe. A lot of things from Forever New. The brand seems to be growing on me this season! Brand freak or street smart? Brands or from streets, it doesn't really matter to me as long as I like what I wear. Choose one—sporty, glamorous or chic? If asked to choose from the three, it would have to be glamorous. Your style icon? Bipasha Basu and Gisele Bundchen. I absolutely adore their sense of styling, way of living and their respective fitness mantras! Who's the worst-dressed celebrity around? Huma Qureshi. Although she is among the beautiful girls in Bollywood, I think she probably takes her good looks too casually and doesn't dress to enhance her personality. One fashion trend you don't understand… There is more than one actually. Among them one is harem pants and also furry boots. I don't understand. Your take on accessories? They are extremely precious. They complete your look, be it casual or party wear! It's a thing that can make an okay outfit turn into a great outfit, and really improve your sense of style. One thing that boosts your confidence… I think when you love yourself, you naturally feel comfortable and confident in your skin. Although a nice perfume and well done makeup always add up to your confidence level. You would love to be dressed up by… Elie Saab and Manish Malhotra. While Elie Saab has such exquisite and elegant collections, Manish Malhotra's collections are splendid and gorgeous. They are both fabulous designers. — As told to Manpriya Singh |

Chase your dreams
Renee singh Have you ever felt that something is holding you back from living your life to the fullest? Do you feel stressed sometimes and feel a lack of motivation to make changes or is it that you simply feel you are not doing what you are good at doing. If answer is "yes' to all these questions, this leads to one conclusion that whatever it is that is holding you back from living your full potential is a certain level of stress. Ask yourself two questions - "How do you feel while you are doing what you do? How do you actually want to feel?" We realise that we give very little importance to the way we feel about what we do in life because we just get continue to perform because we think we must. Time to make a change Once we start examining our feelings we realise that some of the goals we made and have not been achieved by us are written off by us as unimportant. We must accept that our unachieved goals somewhere deep inside put us on a negative spiral We need to look to look within, accept this and do something about it. You deserve happiness You definitely deserve all the good things life offers. Most of all you deserve to feel great about yourself. You must be in a job situation that makes you feel good about yourself and you truly enjoy it. You should be looking forward to every new day in your life. Do it for yourself Nobody can do it for you, you alone have to do it for yourself. Don't take a back seat because you are tired of the way life has been. You must always have inside of you a desire to:
For this you need a decision making capacity. Feel the confidence Once you have taken the decision to be motivated, go for what you want. Remember yourself as the fearless child who always believed he could get what he wanted. There were no inhibitions or trying to weigh the pros and cons of situations, you just went for it. Allow your creative juices to flow Be creative — listen to music, paint, dance, sing — be generally happy. As your creativity flows, negativity goes away and you feel a sense of joy within. It is these moments that strengthen our inner self and keep us destressed and ready to maximise our potential. (Singh is a Chandigarh based psychotherapist) |

Under the fire Singer Demi Lovato has slammed Lady Gaga for "glamourising eating disorders" during her provocative performance at SXSW music festival. Lovato, who has suffered eating disorders, took to Twitter to criticise Gaga for glorifying bulimia. "Sad... As if we didn't have enough people glamourising eating disorders already. Bottom line, it's not 'cool' or 'artsy' at all," the 21-year-old singer said. Worth the while

Candid confessions
Though Na Aana Is Desh Laado was Aryan Pandit’s first television show, his break-through came with Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai that is telecast on Sahara One Television. His character Samar, after completing 100 episodes, still continues to remain as popular, which is a testament to the fact that a character matters more on small screen than the actor himself. He speaks about his role, the show and lots more….
Are you happy with the success of your show? I have lived up to the expectations and I am glad that the show has received so much appreciation from the viewers. What prompted you to play the role of Samar in the show? Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai received a good response because of its socialistic storyline and that attracted me to it . Also, I think it is one of the best family show when it comes to the saas-bahu sagas. Tell us something about your role in the show? I play Samar, an ambitious cricketer and it is a very powerful role. The viewers have started noticing me. I owe a lot to my team and the production house, Impact Tele Network Pvt. Ltd. How is Aryan Pandit is real life? I am very focused in life, just like my character, Samar. Also, I love Acting and staying fit. How was it like to work with Prachee Pathak and Payal Rajput? Prachee is a pass out from NSD and Payal is very talented and hardworking. It is nice to work with them. So what is next on the cards? If I hear a good story, I would love to do act, but I am concentrating on this family show for now. It is a good sign, as the viewers need to see shows that reflect reality. So, I am hoping for something exciting to come my way soon. — Dharam Pal
