Surgical surge
A girl walks into a clinic, looks at herself disapprovingly in the mirror hung at the wall behind the reception and checks out with the receptionist, "Do we have the provision of getting the double chin removed." No, she isn't obese — all she is looking at is a sharp face cut, something like that of Deepika Padukone. It's not the only thing on the list of 'to-do-cosmetic-procedures' that youngsters, especially girls, are going for. There are other options as well — cleft chin, dimples and lifted eyebrows; other than the usual nose and lip jobs.
Anushka Sharma and her newfound pout were recently seen in the preview of Koffee with Karan episode, which features her. The trend is indeed gaining ground. To begin with, cosmetic surgeries were in fact corrective surgeries, opted for only when a feature was disfigured. For Bollywood celebrities, going under the knife might be an obligation to look perfect onscreen but the trend is being increasingly followed by young girls. Says Dr Vikas Sharma, dermatologist, "It's surprising and amusing to see girls walk in and demand a nose job or eye-brow lifting when it is actually not required." He owes the increase in demand of cosmetic surgeries to people becoming over-conscious about their looks. "Girls as young as thirteen years come for mole removal and eighteen years go for double chin removal, eye-brows lifting and lengthening of eye lashes." Not that getting a cosmetic surgery has any adverse effects on the patients, but the trend points towards people's growing resentment with their looks! Suggesting a sociological reason behind the spurt in the number of people going for cosmetic surgeries, Dr KM Kapoor, cosmetic surgeon, says, "Unsteady relationships, broken and unhappy marriages are coercing people to undergo surgeries. There is a pressure to look good and a surgery ensures that to a large extent." Demand for surgeries might be pre-dominantly ruled by the age factor but with youngsters going ahead with these, there is a shift in the client profile. "Girls wish for augmented cheekbones and even chin, so we have a fat transferring solution for that area. Inter Thigh Distance (ITD) is demanded by models, who want a certain distance between their things, to look good. And then there is calf liposuction, which aims to give one perfectly shaped calfs," adds Kapoor while listing some of the popular surgeries. The surgical procedures are safe, but then the techniques are new. Dr SD Swami, dermatologist, says it is only after fifteen years that we will get to know about the repercussions, if any, of these age-defying methods. "It will be then that our first-generation of patients will be reviewed. Till then it is difficult to say if these will or not have any long term side-effects."

Spreading their melody
Just when you arrive at the threshold of Alliance Francaise, Chandigarh, and walk hastily towards the gallery in anticipation of meeting the 'one-man' band-Rit, a French composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist—you establish an instant camaraderie with him! Perhaps it is his friendly disposition. Or maybe his music, which transcends all barriers of language! Language can pose a little problem if you are not savvy with either speaking or understanding French, but Peak, who manages and produces the sound for Rit, translates the tough bits of the conversation. Rit and Peak are in the city to perform at the Alliance Francaise.
"It's been a delightful experience here in India; we have performed at Chennai and Pondicherry before," begins Rit. He gives details of his genre of music, "I do a lot of genres, including dub, reggae, hip-hop, and I fuse rock with folk. However, my songs have a lot of social relevance as well. I like making songs that talk of justice and are against racism as well as poverty, but I also like experimenting with other emotions such as romance." Born as Eric in the northern district of Marseille, Rit (stage name) was discovered at the famous French Music Festival-Printemps de Bourges. He seeks inspiration from musicians like Renaud, Beck, G Love, Ali Farka Touré and Beastie Boys. He has released as many as seven albums of various genres. "Since internet has become a household commodity and there are so many portals, where free music is available, the album culture is fading away. It took me a year to make my latest album, Papet-J-Rit, where I collaborated with Papet. It is a mix of blues and hip-hop. It is too much of hardwork and we only use it for promotional purposes. Also, I go by the trend of releasing a single that would lure the audience into buying the entire album, if they like the sound of it," he says. Peak highlights the significance of having a good sound, "Since Rit deals with a lot of genres and plays so many instruments, including, guitar, bass, drums and tambourine, along with beatboxing, we need a good console and big sound system." Although Rit expresses his childhood desire to play in a band, he is content with being a one-man band. "Being a one-man band allows a lot of scope for improvisation and though I always wanted to be in a band, my partner was not very convinced with the idea." amarjot@tribunemail.com (At Alliance Francaise, Chandigarh, on Tuesday from 7 pm onwards)

On the right track
Things have started looking up for him now; he has drowned himself in the sea of music, the place where he says he can breathe well, irrespective of the circumstance. Singer J Star has been on a roller coaster ride for a while; it is now that he wants to take grip of the situation. He has of course cut notes with the famous Mafai Mundeer, but then this definitely isn't the end of anything. "I am on the right track and wish to keep moving like that. Bygones and bygones, there is much to life," adds J Star. "I am not a trained singer, music is a passion that I am following," says J Star, who comes from Amritsar.
J Star has come up with J Star Productions, wherein he has done the music and written the lyrics of his track. "I was doing something called ghost production from 2003 onwards. Ghost production, as the name suggests, means producing music for another musician without giving your own name. Now, it is time I come out of the shadow and do something different," he adds. While singers generally say they are either self-taught or born to be a singer, J Star owes his learning to the internet. "I am driven by music; I wanted to understand the nuances of making great and exciting tracks. I took help from the internet, learnt whatever I could and then practiced it well. Isn't music also about experimenting? This is what I do." J Star doesn't want to jump into anything that he isn't sure of, but music in Punjabi films is something he would want to explore soon. "I want to be confident about what I am doing; music in films has become more or less the same, I would bring in something fresh," shares J Star. The much talked about trend of releasing singles, rather than albums, catches his fancy as well. "It only gives time to the artist to release back-to-back tracks. An album requires a lot of work and time. However, there is no taking away the charm of albums." jasmine@tribunemail.com

One for your girlfriend
Jasmine Singh The usually composed and soft spoken Babbal Rai is a little edgy as he releases his latest album Girlfriend by Speed Records. Babbal, who also makes his acting debut with Mr and Mrs 420, gives his best to anything he does--acting or singing. He doesn't mind pushing himself, testing his limits every now and then. Babbal, who is currently based in Australia, visits Punjab as and when his work demands. Nevertheless, this 1-wear-the-right-attitude singer is never far away from Punjab and Punjabiyat. His recent album is a good mix of all kinds of flavours. "Just like me," he laughs. Presenting Babbal Rai…. All about Girlfriend This is an album that has all kinds of tracks, pop, bhangra, romantic and a sad song. I have written four songs out of the eight in the album. I have worked hard on this album and I am sure this is the best Valentine treat I could give to my fans. Bunty Bains has conceived the project. The lyrics for the rest of the songs have been written by Abbi FGK, Aman Randhawa and Vadda Grewal. Pav Dharia has given music to five songs, while Mofolactic, Desi Routz and Beat Minister have given music for the remaining three. Songs included in the album are--Akh Teri, Jattan Da Munda, Tuttiyan, Jawani, Yaariyan, Tere Layi, Hathiyar and the title track Girlfriend. If not a singer… I would have been doing some business in Australia. A singer actor or an actor singer? I would want people to like me in whatever I do, I want to give my best to singing and acting as well. The live fun Live shows are any day more fun than sitting in a studio and recording songs. It is through live shows that a singer gets to know whether the audience has accepted him or her. Memorable live show I had a great time performing in front of a young audience at LPU last week. The energy was completely live. If I were to collaborate Jazzy B, Gippy Grewal and Amrinder Gill are my favourite singers, I would collaborate with anyone of them, even all. Five minutes before a live show … I stop interacting or talking half an hour before any show. I give my throat some rest and concentrate and then I never forget to remember God. If I were marooned on an island… I should be left with my mobile, harmonium and lots of stuff to eat. Five years from now I wish I can always be in the hearts of my fans. I don't plan my life in days or years. I like to go with the flow! My dream car It will be a Bugatti. Fan mail As and when I have time, I personally reply to my fans. No matter what I want to stay connected to them. |

Strokes of genius
A line here and a touch there, you can have the perfect face if you learn the art of make-up Manpriya Singh Getting hold of the basics of make-up is not difficult, nor is making the shift from elementary to advanced levels. What could take years to trickle down and reach you are some closely guarded and tried and tested pearls of wisdom that come in handy and make all the difference. No chef parts with some real recipes, no artiste divulges their best secrets. We are bringing forth some random make-up tips and tricks, picked up in bits and pieces from celebrity artists to local make-up experts to anybody with information to part— No make-up look needs the maximum make-up. Celebrity artist Bobbi Brown emphasizes on the right concealer and foundation. It is always recommended to choose a foundation by applying swatches of three close shades on your face. The one that merges is the right colour of foundation. Application of blush as per the face shape is one of the open secrets. It's an area often retorted and unfortunately, just as prone to mistakes. A little bit of shimmer and bronze powder just along the cheekbones and a hint of pink blush on the tip of the apples is a combination likely to suit any skin. For plumper lips dab some clear gloss in the middle of your bottom lip and see the difference. Want a dewy look? Apply Vaseline to your cheek bones. Apply lighter colours first and then gradually make your way to darker shades when doing eye make-up. Lighter colours and highlights should be applied in the inner corners of the eyes, just under the brow bone. Battling thin and sparse brows? Pick up a shade lighter than your hair colour and fill with short, quick strokes. A clear mascara or gel should take care of any wayward strands sticking out. . Some suggest mixing cream eye shadows with clear nail paint to get the customized matte colour. Celebrity make-up artist and author Robert Jones swears by the power of prepping your face before any sort of make up application. All the more for eye make-up application. You can never go over the board with eye cream and your concealer will blend much more smoothly, thereby reducing any lines and crevices. Last but not the least, this is a highly recommended one. If you are not following make-up artists on social networking sites, you are missing out on any little trivia they may have to share on a regular basis. manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Life with Cleo
Poonam Bindra It was a conscious decision to add another member to the Puri family. So, six years ago on February 18, tiny Cleo was brought home in a basket, which remained his abode for many months. This male beagle is everybody's darling but Tanishsa, the elder daughter, is his sole guardian who looks after all his needs. And whenever she is home after her work, he has time for no one else. An ardent lover of dogs, Tanisha, working for value added services for the Telecom sector and enterprise management, has the precondition for any matrimonial alliance "He should be fond of dogs." Whenever she is around, he throws the toys from the bed knowing that she will hand them back but with her mom Simmi, he knows he can't take that liberty. "I am very fond of him but discipline is discipline" says Simmi. Cleo is wary of strangers and initially barks and cringes away but once he sees the family members welcoming the new comer, he too slowly comes forward and sits with everybody. Fond of walks, this chap royally ignores other dogs on the road. Tanisha narrates, "Only once when he was very small, he tried to attack a huge German Shepherd, who was very surprised at this little fellow jumping at him." And she adds on, "Surprisingly he is fond of cats and as a small pup many times we had to rescue him from the neighborhood cat, who would come and squat with him." The good and positive aspect is that Master Cleo is not very fussy about his food-all he wants is his chicken and roti for lunch and Kibbles for dinner and of course sweets, especially prashad, any time. The negatives and the downside is that this brat hates taking a bath and wears any coat or jacket though he does enjoy a brushing down. Tanisha has the uncanny feeling that Cleo knows the day when it is his birthday for they do like to celebrate it in style. He keeps on wagging his tail. Tanisha's father adds, "He shows his happiness because he is getting an extra dose of petting on his birthday." The scene is of total 'bonhomie' with Cleo being the centre of attraction for the whole family. |

Synchronize with sun
satish narula The biggest problem for a gardener is the sun. It is essential for the plant life. In some cases, its prolonged availability may be harmful whereas its absence in some parts of the garden may be a problem. Let us understand its use in horticulture. The foremost observation while planning a garden is to see the position of the sun. All those parts of the garden are marked where there is complete sun, partial sun or no sun availability. The planting has to be planned accordingly. For this it is essential to have first hand knowledge about flora. This is where all the difference lies. You may find many a 'landscapists' in the market, but be sure he or she is qualified. This is because any plantation done once, especially the trees, climbers or even shrubs, cannot be changed later. First thing first, let us talk about the winter annuals. The flowering plants of this season will put forth their best in a month or so. Those planted in beds in earth are bound to get the sun for the period when these are in direct line of the sun. Any obstruction caused by a tree, shrub, hedge, an adjacent building or any structure will cut upon the sun-time exposure. The days in winter are already short and if there is some cut in time, one cannot expect the best of quality in blooms. The plant, during and after its germination, needs good amount of sun. Then what is the solution? First, while planning the selection of site should be according to the sun requirement of different species, there are certain species like salvia, cineraria, nasturtium etc that may do well even when sun is scanty. In case you have planted annuals in pots then you can shift these pots on the roof top till when they start flowering. Once flowering starts, it can be shifted down and even when there is partial sun, the plants sustain good amount of quality blooms for the blooming period. When you follow this practice of putting the pots on the roof top, make sure there is no leakage in the roof or even you can spread black poly-film under the pots and be careful while watering the pots. Waterproofing of the rooftop could also be undertaken. (To be concluded) (Narula is a senior horticulturist and landscapist) |

Priyanka sets her own pace
...says unless someone handcuffs her, she won’t be able to slowdown her breakneck speed With her Bollywood movies and a budding international music career, Priyanka Chopra is doing too many things all at once but the actress says she has no plans to slowdown anytime soon. She says she loves juggling different things and playing difficult roles. "I guess it is a bit of conscious thing because I get bored doing the same thing. In my films too, my characters are always different looking be it Agneepath, Barfi! or in Gunday. I enjoy versatility and variety. I am not like others... I don't follow rules and paths. I make my own rules," Priyanka said. The 31-year-old former Miss World, who has been working since she was 17, jokes that unless someone handcuffs her and makes her stop, she would not be able to slowdown her breakneck speed. Exotic won triple platinum in India. I feel my pace is absolutely fine. I think I need to increase it," she said. She is the object of affection to two of her leading stars, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, in Ali Abbas Zafar directed Gunday that hits the screens this Valentine's Day. Priyanka plays the role of Nandita, a cabaret dancer in the Kolkata of '70s in the Yash Raj film which is set in the world of coal mafia. "I enjoyed doing the film. It was tremendously satisfying to have so many shades in a character but it was difficult also because there is so much going on in the movie. She is very pivotal to the story as all the conflict happens because of Nandita. You don't know whose side to take," she said. —PTI

Small wonder
While recently a lot of Indian-American actors are making big waves in Hollywood; here is nine year old boy wonder who's working with some of the biggest names in the industry becoming increasingly famous by the day.

Now an Indian Robocop!
Hollywood's fascination with India never seems to stop and the latest one to be bitten by this craze is the Brazilian Hollywood filmmaker Jose Padilha whose biggest Hollywood movie as a director, Robocop, is due for release on February 14 in India. The film which is a reboot of the 1987 cult classic has actor Joel Kinnaman and Australian actress Abbie Cornish in the lead roles along with a stellar support case of Micheal Keaton and Samuel L Jackson.
Considering the success of cop films in India, it looks like that the makers are planning an Indian remake of the same, because until now Bollywood might have seen various Dabangg cops but has never seen a half-robot half-human super cop! Also, none other than the director of the film gave us the hint of the Indian remake in question. Jose was recently heard saying - "I would of course love to make an Indian remake you know! And I would be completely okay with a Bollywood adaptation, but I am not sure if other people (the audience) there would want it." He said with a laugh.

Aditya Chopra scolds me: Ranveer
Actor Ranveer Singh, who got his break in the Bollywood from Aditya Chopra, says the shy producer has never praised his work and rather scolded him.
Ranveer made his acting debut with YRF's Band Baaja Baaraat followed by Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, and now he will be seen in Gunday, another film from the same production house. "I feel lucky and fortunate to be working for Aditya. He is a great guy. But he has never said good things to me. He just scolds me. He just says good job and not more than that," Ranveer said in an interview. Gunday is set in Kolkata of the 70s and it deals with two friends Bikram and Bala as they go from being small-time coal thieves to the black-marketing mafia. Ranveer's character, Bikram, is slightly held-back, like an angry young man. "I don't know if my character is similar or inspired by anyone. Somebody who works closely with YRF said to me that he gets a vibe of young Amitabh Bachchan by looking at me in Gunday. It is a huge compliment," he said. "Mr Bachchan is more than the reason for me to become an actor. I used to watch Hindi films and was inspired by him. The cast and crew of the film were all youngsters, so the atmosphere was energetic," he added. It also stars Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. — PTI

Chic & classy
Better known as Jhansi Ki Rani, Kratika Sengar, who has been part of many popular shows, talks about her fashion mantra and style quotient. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion means comfort. I don't follow any trend, as I wear what I look good in. I prefer comfort over style any day. And it is not necessary that what looks good in fashion magazines or on models looks good on everyone. Do you wear accessories? I like simple accessories when it comes to jewellery. I avoid chunky ones in real life. I am more into shoes and bags than jewellery though. Do you follow any brands? Not particularly. I am not that brand-conscious. It is about stuff that looks good. What was your most expensive buys? I have clothes designed by Vikram Phadnis and Manish Malhotra, which are really expensive. What are the clothes you are comfortable in? I am a t-shirt and shorts kind of person. Casual wear is my style. What are the must-haves in your purse? My driving licence and ATM card; I don't need much.

Playing Lord Krishna
Siddharth Kumar Tewary's show Mahabharat is one of the most popular shows in the recent times and actor Saurabh Raj Jain, who plays the witty Lord Krishna, is one of the most popular actors in the show.
The young actor is leaving no stone unturned to prove his talent on screen — whether it is his witty and cute smile or his friendly body language. When asked about this, Saurabh says, "When I started playing Krishna I always thought about the body language and smile. I wanted to incorporate human gestures while playing a God. Krishna is also someone who is explaining reasons for various events in one's life. So the more I look real on screen, the more I will be able to enact it." Has playing Krishna changed him as a person? "Yes, it has. I believe I have become an extrovert after I started playing Krishna. I have become more expressive about my thoughts, feelings and emotions. Post my shoot also I am engrossed in the scene. I would also like to mention here about the writers of the show. They have been extremely hardworking and been putting the dialogues in a very easy way, so that the audience can understand the importance of the scene." Saurabh adds, "So far I have shared my scene with Pooja aka Draupadi and Shaheer aka Arjun. Shaheer is a buddy off screen and I find Pooja extremely hardworking; this is her debut show and she is putting all her effort into the scenes." —HRM

Fearless approach
Film-maker, stunt director and now a TV host, Rohit Shetty is looking forward to hosting Khatron Ke Khiladi in South Africa. He talks about it and more.
Why did you choose to host Khatron Ke Khiladi? It's been a favourite show; perhaps action is in my blood. We have to take it to a different level now, as it is the biggest show in India. We will entertain people through action and stunts. Wouldn't having a stunt woman as a contestant on the show be unfair to No. As the format is different this time, it's not only about the ability to perform stunts but more than that. There will be other challenges. What do you think of earlier hosts — Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra? They were wonderful. I enjoyed watching them on TV. The channel said they took a while to convince you - why is that? I was just concerned if I would be able to pull it off, which is why I took my time in deciding. What do you fear the most? Nothing, really! I have grown up with two stunt artists — my parents, so the atmosphere has always been fearless from the beginning.
