Begging a family tradition in this village
Shamdo Camp (Rajpura), February 3 They daily commute to Chandigarh and neighbouring towns to seek alms. A similar scenario can be witnessed in every household in the camp located on the outskirts of Rajpura. The village, claimed to be a place of Shanidev, is having a population of approximately 1,500. On every Saturday and Tuesday, youngsters from this village leaves for various cities, including Chandigarh, Panchkula, Gobindgarh, Rajpura and Khana, to collect alms as part of their hereditary culture. These localities are following this tradition since long. Every men of the village perform the begging part, while women look after children and learn sewing. Usually, male children leave their studies at the age of 16 and join their superiors. However, young girls help their parents in household works. “We are following the tradition since long. Our community represents as the disciples of Shani Maharaj. So people give alms to us without any hesitation. Every household here uses mustard oil to cook food. On certain days, our youths go on pheris (rounds) to their respective marked area. We have the blessings of Shanidev. With changing times, we are teaching sewing to women here and also different ways to save money. We never allow them to ask for alms. We teach mantras and shalok to the natives of this village,” said Girdhari Lal, sarpanch of Shamdo Camp village. Image defamed
“Earlier, we were respected but people from other communities have defamed us. At every light point, one would see a small boy or a girl holding small bowl less than half filled with mustard oil with some coins into it and asking for alms. Neither a girl nor a boy from our community performs this kind of task. Male child accompany their superiors only after they attain the age of 16. No one from us stands on every traffic light and asks for essentials,” said the sarpanch of Shamdo Camp village. Unemployment to blame
The young shoulders, being unemployed, have their say on this hereditary begging. “We are asked to study, but it’s too late. After completing our senior secondary education, we are unemployed. With begging becoming a peril, we are left with no other option but to work on daily wages,” said a group of three youth, Nanoram, Chalaram and Ashok. The busy days
On every Saturday, Tuesday and special occasions, youths go to cities like Chandigarh and Panchkula by maxi cabs. A few of them are dropped near the Zirakpur highway, while the rest of them are dropped near Tribune
Chowk. In the evening, they return to their village. A certain amount of money collected during the day is offered to the Shanidev temple of the village, while the rest of the amount is distributed among the households. |
