ROWING TOURNERY
Organisers want finish tower back
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 19
The organisers of Chandigarh State Rowing Championship missed the watch-tower at the Sukhana Lake. According to them, the four-storey building was the best and the only spot to judge the water sports competitions conducted at the lake.

The building was situated on an island in the lake. However, on October 7, 2009 the glass-tower was destroyed in a fire that broke out allegedly due to a short circuit. At present, the non-availability of any centralised place made it difficult for organisers to conduct water sports.

“The finish tower was the real identity of this lake. In addition to that it was a boon for the organisers. At present, we don’t have any specific space or marked area to make a finish line. We are unable to keep a view and judge the exact situation of a rowing match. And it becomes difficult for us to have accuracy. The finish tower was media centre and a place for the judges. Water sports participants also miss the same. The tower provides them the confidence of being judged well,” said Parmod Kumar Singla, honorary secretary, Chandigarh Rowing Amateur Association.

“Even after repeated requests, no action has been taken to build up the structure again. The tower also ensured safety the general public while boating. It gave them a sense of security. The life guards used to keep an eye through the tower situated,” added Singla.
