Downpour exposes Sports Dept's claim
Badminton, basketball courts witness wet patches due to roof leakage

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 18
The heavy rain that lashed the city last night exposed the casual approach of the UT Sports Department in maintaining the sports infrastructure.

A visit to the indoor badminton court and the basketball court, which is yet to be inaugurated, highlighted the poor state of affairs. Notably, both courts are situated at a stone’s throw from the office of the Directorate of Sports.

The first indoor basketball court of the city, which is under construction since the past three years, has witnessed wet patches occurred due to small holes in the newly installed overhead covered shed.

The holes led to wet patches over the newly laid-court layer. The UT Administration is spending crores for the much-awaited project. It was supposed to be completed by 2011. However, the Engineering Department failed to construct the project.

On the other hand, the condition of the indoor badminton court is also getting worse. The issue was reported in these columns on October 13, 2013. Despite this, the situation has not been improved. The court No 2 and 3 are the worst hit. The court is among the top most revenue-earning centres of the sports complex.

For the past many years, the Engineering Department has failed to repair the leaking roofs. Last year, participants of an inter-school badminton competition for boys and girls faced a harrowing time when rain spoiled the indoor games.
