Sibling Act
A number of relatively lesser-known siblings of celebrities live in the shadow of their famous brother or sister

Shilpa ShettyShe may not have been the ultimate winner, but reality show Bigg Boss 7 gave Tanisha Mukherjee the kind of publicity that she never got from any of her films. Though she has acted in Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and Tamil movies, before the show, she was known more as the younger sister of Kajol and less as a multi-lingual movie star.

Tanisha is not alone. A number of relatively lesser known siblings of celebrities who are in the same profession continue to live in the shadow of their famous brother or sister.

Though most accept a humdrum life of anonymity, many others venture into completely different fields. Some other interesting examples are Ranbir Kapoor's sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni who is a fashion designer with her own label named Ara, Aishwarya Rai's brother Aditya is an engineer in the merchant navy, Salman Khan's sister Alvira is a jewellery designer and Deepika Padukone's sister Anisha has taken her father's sporting genes and is among the top 10 women golfers of the country.

However, though some may come to terms with their relative anonymity, for some others it is difficult to find the groove and they may harbour feelings of resentment, guilt and lack of confidence. Many work with their famous sibling in some capacity or the other and lead a comfortable life, though not as luxurious as that of the better-known sibling.

Faceless sisters

We all know Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. But how many know that he has three sisters who lead normal lives far removed from the global celebrity status of their brother and Facebook founder?

One of Zuckerberg's sister Arielle works for a marketing firm as product manager; Donna has her own food blog and is doing her PhD at Princeton; Randi worked with Facebook as marketing director for sometime but is now founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media and Editor-in-Chief of Dot Complicated, a digital lifestyle website. Like Zuckerberg, British soccer sensation David Beckham, too, has two sisters. His older sister, Lynne, married, divorced, remarried a man who is now in jail — she lives in a house her brother bought for her and manages on government benefits. His younger sister, Joanne, works as a hairdresser in a London salon.

Superstar Brad Pitt has a brother Doug who looks remarkably similar and is a near-celebrity. Though he owns a real estate company, he owes his fame to a recent Virgin mobile ad campaign featuring him which has become immensely popular and is a spoof on his life.

So is there any sibling rivalry between him and his superstar bro? "Not in the least", he says. In fact, Brad encouraged Doug to go for the Virgin Mobile ad. "I did call Brad and said, 'Hey, what do you think?' and he said, 'Do it, sounds great!'"Doug recalls.

Legal battles

Unlike the friendly relations between Doug and Brad Pitt, Michael Jackson's brothers and sisters are at each other's throat. Siblings Jermaine, Janet, Rebbie, Tito and Randy are fighting legal battles over their dead brother's will saying it's a fake. At stake is his multimillion-dollar estate.

There have been sibling problems closer home as well. Aamir Khan and his brother Faisal have had a troubled relationship. Though when he underwent treatment for schizophrenia sometime back, psychiatrists said that it was perhaps a case of suffering from the under-achiever syndrome. Faisal, too, had acted in a few movies but in no way could emulate the success of Aamir. However, there are reports that he might make a comeback with a film titled Chinar — A Leaf of Love.

Other star siblings have either not made it or given up or are still struggling. Ashmit Patel, brother of Amisha Patel, tried his hand at acting, got a few roles but was unable to make an impact; he even came in the fourth season of the reality show Bigg Boss but he has not been able to establish himself as a Bollywood star.

Like Ashmit, Shilpa Shetty's younger sister Shamita, too, got some roles in a few movies, including Amitabh Bachchan-Shah Rukh Khan-Aishwarriya Rai starrer Mohabbatein and the 2005 hit Zeher, but she finally gave up and went on to do an interior designing course in London, 'quitting' Bollywood in search of another career. Given the fact that interior designing is a lucrative occupation, she is meeting with far more success than her acting endeavours.

Kajol's younger sister Tanisha Mukherjee's story is similar. She had a successful career as a veejay before making an entry into films with a fabulous debut break with Yash Chopra opposite Uday Chopra in Neal 'n' Nikki. This was Uday's big break as well after his earlier films did not do too well. However, the crashing of the film and that of the others that followed virtually put paid to her film career. Though Tanisha did some regional films, it is her appearance in the recently concluded Bigg Boss 7 that has somewhat revived her professional fortunes.

Supporting roles

There are many instances where siblings have achieved some success, but not at the same level as their famous brother or sister. Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan, for instance, came as heroes or in supporting roles, but never reached superstardom like Salman. Both are now making films, using the box-office appeal of their famous brother and reaping the fruits of success.

Or take the case of famous author Vikram Seth and sister Aradhana. Though they may not be exactly in the same profession, there is a lot of goodwill between them. While Vikram has earned worldwide acclaim as a writer, Aradhana is in another field of art. She is a movie production designer and did the sets for Deepa Mehta's controversial film, Earth and Fire and Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited.

She has said in interviews that she and brother Vikram have a bindaas relationship. They don't interfere in each other's lives, apart from giving or taking the occasional advice. Being younger to Vikram by 10 years, Aradhana says it is her writer brother who sensitised her to art, music, poetry and books.

Vikram, on the other hand, says that when he comes to Delhi, people refer to him as his sister's brother. He says he is very proud of his little sister.

The best part, according to Aradhana, is that all the acclaim and fame have settled lightly on Vikram's shoulders. He is still the caring, loving brother that she has known since childhood. Which in a way shows that it is not necessary that all siblings feel that they have to also achieve the same success as their famous sibling.

Professional rivalry

While Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle each carved their own niche in the singing business, there were rumours of professional rivalry between the two in their younger days. In fact, their other siblings Usha, Meena and Hridyanath Mangeshkar never got the recognition of the two but have learnt to respect each other.

In fact, Sai Pranjpaye's film Saaz was said to have been based on the rivalry of the two nightingales of Indian films. However, the two now bond with each other and since they stay in the same building in Mumbai's Peddar Road, they practically meet up every day. Whether reports of their legendary professional rivalry are true or not, they now know the value of appreciating the other's work and great contribution to film music.

In some cases, the opposite is also true. There are those whose chest swells with pride with their more famous sibling. A case in point is Ajit who has been a friend, mentor and guide to his younger brother for over 20 years. And the younger brother has accepted his advice with humility and complete
modesty despite being the greatest sportsman of India, if not the world — Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar!

A known psycological phenomenon

Generally it is seen that jealousy and envy are a part of having a famous brother or sister. This is a known psychological phenomenon. It was way back in 1941 that Australian psychologist, Alfred Adler coined the term sibling rivalry and modern-day research studies have confirmed that it often plays an important role in behaviour patterns of adults.

Even if both siblings are successful they may have a turbulent relationship and may always try to outdo each other. "Sibling rivalry", he wrote " is a normal part of family life. All children become jealous of the love and attention that siblings receive from parents and other adults."

According to Dr Adler, if one sibling goes on to become a high achiever then the chances of rivalry can increase manifold. According to him, the occurrence could be avoided only if the better-known sibling was more compassionate, benign and helpful.
