A bed of roses?
From two flowers covering up for lovers to barely clad men and women gyrating to loud music, Indian cinema has kept up well with the times. We are neither a very open society nor is our cinema.
A recent judgment has once again brought 'premarital sex' out of the closet and into the public domain. Double standards we have had in many aspects of life, sex seemingly tops the chart! Cinema as chronicler of societal trends has taken its own sweet time to come to terms to it. And its portrayal has been an expression of the society of the times. Sixties and around, premarital sex led to an almost inevitable problem and 'penance', be it Aradhana, Julie, Dhool Ka Phool, Amar or Masoom. With time, the portrayal changed a wee bit when 'bravery' was added to it along with 'problem' and 'penance'. Kya Kehna (2000) was one such movie in which Preity Zinta plays Priya Bakshi, a college-goer who becomes pregnant. Despite her then boyfriend and family backtracking on her, she braves the society to bring the baby into the world. Preity did it again in Salaam Namaste as Ambar Malhotra and this time, the society is not as much a problem (because they are based in Melbourne, Australia) as is the personal dilemma. Teree Sang has this teen couple that runs away from opposing parents to protect their unborn child. The duo ends up in the court as well. What baffles one, however, is how onscreen premarital sex almost always results in pregnancy! A leading daily in 2013 revealed an interesting fact: 'about 33 per cent admitting to premarital sex, 50 per cent denying it while seventeen per cent choosing to remain silent on the subject'. Keith Sequeira, actor-anchor, who had been part of the film Sixteen that dealt with teens and how they deal with sex, says, "Premarital sex is a very broad term. Underage sex I can understand; we need laws to protect children. But otherwise whatever two people do within the four walls, I don't think a third one has any say about it." He points out that on the screen or otherwise, it's the women who get a raw deal. "Things are changing in cinema. In society too there is a need to open up. By opening up I don't mean opening clothes, but talking about it. A teen who knows about it and decides not to do it is how it should be." Cut to the present. Premarital sex is no more represented by any such heavy duty term, but is much part of love (or say lust). Surprisingly even in 2013, when making out is much a part of lifestyle —refer to Dev D, Khwahish, Cocktail or Shuddh Desi Romance — there are puritans! "A larger section of our senior filmmakers still go by a puritan myth," says scriptwriter Sanjay Chauhan. "I was once reading a script and was narrating a part where there was a making-out scene and the director immediately went, 'No no Sanjay please keep it out, audience wouldn't accept a non-virgin heroine," he laughs. Premarital sex might be part of society but it's not always that every reality makes it to the screen. "There have been films like Julie or Satyakam which have some mention of it, but for a typical Hindi film the hero and heroine must redeem themselves by getting married," says Sanjay. As a society and cinema we take a dual stance, believes actress Shilpa Shukla. "Subjects are largely chosen keeping in mind market forces and there are too many segments of society whose sentiments have to be kept in mind. So no wonder there are hardly any films that take this subject," says Shilpa, who is intrigued by how extra-marital affairs have been part of the films. Film director and novelist Piyush Jha believes that our cinema and society are opening up with time. "I have read the recent ruling, the judge has called premarital sex and the claims by the woman in question 'unethical'," says Jha. As for cinema, it has only reflected the society we have been living in. "Our cinema is increasingly portraying dark parts of reality. And I believe it's going to continue." mona@tribunemail.com
True mirror
Sometimes cinema follows society, sometimes society follows cinema and at others they don't follow each other; certainly not in a timely order. Different culture
In America, you can come across teens going ahead with their pregnancies without getting married, but in our society we still wouldn't find many such instances. |

World of words
At twenty, Sumrit Shahi is probably the youngest screenplay writer in the television industry. While sharing anecdotes, he looks three years back in his life when he was fervently writing his debut novel, Just friends.
He recounts how he finished a chapter while taking the physical education exam in class 12. "I wasn't keen on scoring a hundred per cent in a subject that did not promise to better my overall average. I rather utilised time to write a chapter of my book," shares Sumrit, who eventually scored 90 per cent in the exams. His tenth results boast of 93 per cent! Sumrit's novel has sold one lakh copies and is into its 18th edition! His second novel, A Lot Like Love, A Little Like Chocolate, is also into its twelfth edition. The first book has been translated into Hindi by Hind Pocket Books and has sold 20,000 copies already, which is an achievement given the drab scene of Hindi literature in the country. Pursuing academies would have been a natural choice, given his achievements, but Sumrit instead took a six month break to write the book! Not all of it was written in the way professional authors do - by locking themselves indoors and dedicating hours to writing. "I have even written on a tissue paper while partying or even on my phone while travelling." Writing, he says, gives him a high and graduating to screenplay, he believes was destined. His parents were 'annoyingly supportive', which means that they didn't have a problem with what he was doing with his life but weren't happy as well! An avid reader himself, he has grown up on Enid Blyton and Erich Segal. "And that helps me come up with new ideas." Sumrit's show, Sadda Haq, is ranking second among the youth-oriented shows across all general entertainment channels (GECs). How it happened to him is another story, "Post the success of my second novel, I was approached by the production house as it was looking for young novel writers." An industry which is dotted with shows that have the same storyline - of sobbing daughter-in-laws and conniving mother-in-laws - the change in content is more than welcome. "A fresh perspective to everyday situations is required and who better than youngsters to give it," Sumrit adds. As for taking to acting, he is happy being behind the screen as of now. "To navigate a ship is more interesting than just boarding it. Creating something has its own charm and I am happy doing it than just being a part of it," he signs off. ashima@tribunemail.com

Set up: get a solid base
Jesse Grewal A stable body and good balance are necessary to create a repeatable golf swing. Apart from the correct angles, which is the bend from the hips and the knees the correct position of the shoulders and stance are important. The stance or the placement of the feet give us a stable base and allow the body to turn towards the target through the swing. The left toe should be turned out towards the target and not kept square. This helps the hips turn freely towards the target as we begin the downswing. This move is critical during the transition and brings the club into a correct shallow plane. The knees should be a little outwards as this gives us more stability and a grounded feeling (picture 1). This also reduces excessive lower body action on the backswing. When the knees are a little inwards (picture 2), the lower body moves excessively leading to a loss of power and balance. The shoulders should be pulled back as far as possible so that the chest feels out and the arms are hanging by our side. While bending forward to place the club on the ground we should tilt from the hips so that the back retains the same position as it was when standing erect. When we do not tilt from the hips the arms reach out for the ball and both shoulders move forward causing a rounding of the back (picture 4). This rounded position restricts the shoulder turn on the backswing and causes a loss of posture as the spine will rise while it tries to turn. The right elbow will tend to fly and take the club across the plane. An athletic set up with a strong base is fundamentally important for a powerful swing. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

Divya’s new star
One of Divya's best finds happens to be Himash Kohli, a former radio jockey from Delhi who bears a striking resemblance to the younger Sanjay Dutt from his Rocky days. While casting for the role of Lakshya, a Casanova, a rebel without a cause and a bad boy that all the girls love, Divya looked no further than Himansh, as he reminded her of Sanjay Dutt as he debuted in the 1981 film, making him a household sensation. The Yaariyan director too hopes that the film will put the new-kid-on-the-block in the spotlight given that he looks every bit the star in the making.
Winslet likes to play ordinary
Actress Kate Winslet enjoys playing characters which have nothing extraordinary about their beauty. The actress has said that she likes simple characters as she can showcase her acting skills in such roles better. "I've always preferred playing characters who aren't supposed to look beautiful. I love saying, 'don't make me look nice' or, 'make my face look rounder'," she said. "There's less to think about if my look is raw. That way, I get the best of both worlds —that side of it for my job and the dressing up bit for the red carpet," she added. The 38-year-old is known for her roles in Titanic, The Reader and Labor Day.

Zarine’s last resort
Remember Zarine Khan? She was one of the discoveries of Salman Khan and the voluptuous beauty was the talk of the town due to her resemblance to actress Katrina Kaif. Salman did cast her as the female lead in Veer. However, the film bombed at the box office and the career of Zarine never really took off.
Salman did give a second chance to Zarine though. He made her appear in the item number 'Character dheela' in the super hit movie Ready. Scantily clad Zarine put up a sexy performance in the item number but her efforts were lost as no one noticed or remembered her performance. She also appeared in the hit film Housefull 2 but as luck would have it, she was completely overshadowed by the other two heroines in the film, Jacqueline Fernandez and Asin. So it seemed that nothing was going right for Zarine's career in Bollywood and it was only a matter of time before it ended permanently. Also Salman Khan is busy with his never ending discoveries of new talents and he has moved on to focus his attention on new protégés. Salman didn't have much time for Zarine anymore. Therefore it is completely understandable that Zarine will look for regional films to keep her career afloat. Still the news of her appearing in a Punjabi film came as a surprise nevertheless. Zarine's debut Punjabi flick is called Jatt James Bond and her hero in the film is the latest Punjabi heart-throb Gippy Grewal. Zarine is playing the role of a simple Punjabi girl in the movie. The other actors in the movie are Vindu Dara Singh, Avtar Gill, Mukesh Rishi and the popular comedian Gurpreet Guggi. The first official poster was recently released and we must admit that she is looking good in a typical Punjabi girl attire. Jatt James Bond is produced by the Fortune House Productions and is directed by Rohit Jugraj. The film is expected to release on April 14. We wish Zarine all the best in her new endeavour and hope that she returns to Bollywood movies soon.

Traffic point
The Hindi retelling of the 2011 Malayalam hit Traffic had hit an unexpected roadblock. Producer Ratan Jain had registered the film's title, leaving the remake's producers, Endemol and Fox Star Studios in a bit of a tizzy. But now Jain has handed over the title to them.
A source said, "Ratan Jain had the title and had planned to approach Raj Kumar Gupta to make a film titled Traffic on a different subject. However, it is an accepted practice in the film industry to give away titles as a friendly gesture. So when he was approached, he immedaitely agreed to part with it." The film will be directed by Rajesh Pillai who also helmed the South original. When contacted Ratan Jain confirmed the news and said, "Yes, we had registered the title but I gave it to them when they requested me." Traffic has an ensemble cast, including Jimmy Shergil, Manoj Bajpayee, Prosenjit, Paramprata, Divya Dutta and Sachin Khedekar. It releases on March 7.

Going for the stars
Actress Ishita Dutta, who is currently seen in Raakesh Paswan's Ek Ghar Banauga, speaks about her career and life.
How did acting happen? After my graduation, I did an acting course from Anupam Kher's institute and started working soon after that. I had never thought of becoming an actor, but loved this creative industry and wanted to be a part of it. My sister was very sure I would get into it and she was not wrong! What was your first project? I did an advertisement Down South; it was on August 26, my birthday. It was the best way to spend my birthday. Was the decision of being an actor influenced by Tanushree's decision and success? My family is my backbone; my sister is my strength. I would say her confidence in me gave me the strength to enter this industry. I have seen her struggle and her achievements are the result of sheer hardwork. She is my role model and I am here because of her. Didn't you take the help of Tanushree's contacts to commence your journey? Yes. She helped me throughout, right from getting a portfolio to getting enrolled in an acting academy, but then I had to go through my part of struggle and give auditions. How did you bag the role in Ek Ghar Banaunga? I had worked a little Down South and just finished my first advertisement in Mumbai when I got a call for an audition for a new show on Star Plus. I went for three rounds of auditions and was finalised for Ek Ghar Banaunga. How is it working with producer Raakesh Paswan? Raakesh Paswan as a producer and writer is known for his strong scripting, socially relevant plots as well as great characterization. As an actress, it's a great opportunity for me to be a part of this show. — HRM
