BSNL subscribers irked by delay in repair work
Kalka, January 6 Many residents complained that they have been facing problems using BSNL broadband as well, but to no avail. Sushil Sharma, a resident of Paniwala Padav of Ward Number-1, adjacent to Hindu Girls School, Kalka, alleged that his landline number has been suspended for more than a month now. Similarly, residents of the adjoining villages alleged that despite a facility of computerised complaints, the BSNL subscribers are forced to visit the local BSNL office again and again from far off places putting them in a difficult spot.

ATM fraud: Two-day remand for accused
Chandigarh, January 6 Azharuddin (19), a student of BA-II, and Vipin Kumar (23), working in the marketing division of LG in Delhi, were questioned by the police. The duo had withdrawn Rs 10,000 each from the account of Dharminder Singh, a resident of Patiala, and Jagdeep Kaur, a resident of Sector 19, on December 25 and December 29, respectively. The police had recovered five debit cards of different banks and plastic sheets from their possession. The two told the police that they had learnt the art from the Internet and
a serial. The duo used to insert a thin plastic sheet underneath the keyboard of the ATM. As a result, the machine screen would go blank soon after the PIN was entered. Assuming that the machine had developed a snag, the victims would leave without cancelling the transactions. Thereafter, the accused removed the plastic sheet and
withdrew the money, said the police. The police said they had spent some money and deposited the rest in their bank accounts. 19-year-old arrested The police have arrested a 19-year-old boy for abducting a 12-year-old girl who was traced to Ghaziabad in UP yesterday. The police said the accused, Bunty, was the girl’s
neighbour. The girl had called up her father, following which a police team was dispatched for bringing her back. The girl had disappeared from her house near Palsora village at Sector 56 on January 3. The family of the victim resides in a rehabilitation colony at Sector 56. |

Custody of accused extended

Chandigarh, January 6 Last month, the police had arrested constables Sunil, Akshay, Jagtar Himmat Singh and Anil for raping the 16-year-old girl, a Class X student and a resident of Khuda Lahora. Two of the accused constables had met the victim at her house as they had gone to attend a dispute at her house some months ago. They had then called her the next day and after becoming friends with her raped her various times at gunpoint. The girl was going to commit suicide when she reported the trauma she faced to her brother who then informed the area councillor who further informed the police. Out of the five accused, three hail from Haryana, one is from Rajasthan and one belongs to Gurdaspur. The trial will be conducted in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazar Singh. |

Chandigarh, January 6 The complainant purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 mobile for Rs 34,500. However, soon after the purchase, the handset started giving trouble. When put on charging, the handset started showing problem of overheating. The complainant approached the respondent and after checking the mobile, the complainant was told to change the motherboard. Since the handset was new, the complainant requested the store owner to change the handset, but they flatly refused. Hence, the complainant filed a case with district consumer forum for redressal. The respondents did not make any submission on their behalf and were proceeded against ex-parte. As the respondents did not appear to controvert the averments of the complainant, the forum decided that the stand of the complainant went un-rebutted and the present complaint deserved to succeed. Therefore, the forum decided that the respondents must replace the defective handset with a brand new one of the same make and model, must pay Rs 5,000 as compensation. They were told to pay Rs 5,000 as costs of litigation. |

Chandigarh, January 6 At the general house meeting of the Bar Association on January 3, the members had decided that they will not work on Mondays. The notice instructed: “If any Bar member is found working on Mondays, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed on him.” “A delegation of eight lawyers, including secretary and vice-president of the Bar, met the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dr Sukhchain Singh, and Arun Kampani, Senior Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Chandigarh. We told them to take action and register an FIR against the guilty. They have assured us that they will response in two to three days,” said Ashok Chauhan, president of the Bar Association of Chandigarh District Courts. |

Man accuses colleague of damaging car
Chandigarh, January 6 The police have registered a daily diary report in the case. “The complainant has named one of his colleagues of damaging his Ford Figo car. He alleged that the duo had some differences that provoked the latter to damage his car,” said PGIMER police post In-Charge, sub-inspector Usha Rani. The incident took place at around 1pm today. |

Bad weather mars Deputy CM’s visit
Chandigarh, January 6 According to sources, the deputy chief minister was expected to reach the town from Delhi in morning however, following bad weather; his flight was cancelled and affected his visit to the school. The tournament is witnessing more than 600 participants from all over India. Gathering including teachers, players, teams’ coaches and parents were kept in dark over the arrival of the chief guest. The programme that was scheduled to start at 11 am was delayed for about an hour that further disturbed the match timings. Till the eleventh hour, the school management was expecting the arrival of the chief guest however finding it difficult to handle after 12.15 pm Swaran Salaria, chairman, state commission for the protection of child’s rights, Punjab, was asked to announce open the competition. The opening ceremony of the championship witnessed a cultural performance. “We were asked to come here on time (11am) to witness the opening ceremony. But the programme was delayed almost an hour. If the organisers were well aware of the fact that Deputy CM can’t arrive, they must have started the function on time,” said some players of Assam. Not only the participants but Chandigarh police personnel, expecting VIP moment in the area, went back harassed. “We are here since morning. There is no single hand information over the arrival of the chief guest. We have no option but to wait till the function gets over,” said a traffic police officer. Earlier, the sitting arena meant for the VIPs, was covered by the security blanket of Punjab Chief Minister’s security wing. However, once after confirming the non-arrival of the deputy chief minister, the security cover was lifted up. “The organisers kept on calling our players to attend the opening ceremony but there were no sitting arrangements. We were expecting a short meeting with the deputy chief minister but nothing happened. All players were called back to the school premises, from the match venue, to attend the opening ceremony function but all that delay made the players to suffer more,” said a coach. |

Delhi thrash Himachal Pradesh in hockey
Chandigarh, January 6 Making a strong grip, the Delhi side marched ahead and earned two penalty corners in the initial minutes of the game. However Delhi’s drag-flicker failed to show up to the potential. Delhi’s striker Vinod Yadav opened the account for his team in the seventh minute. He further extended the lead with another contribution in the 19th minute. In the very next minute, Sanjeev Kumar took the lead to 3-0 with a solo effort. Enjoying the ball possession, Vinod again pressurised the rival’s defence and managed to score the fourth goal in the 21st minute. Later, in the closing minutes of the first half, Delhi pumped in two more goals, one each by Parveen and Navnish in the 24th and 26th minute, respectively. The Himachal side tried their best to reduce the margin in the next 35 minutes. In the second half, Chaman Lal sounded the wooden plank in the 46th minute, however, the team failed to pace up the momentum. Later, Delhi’s Jagminder Singh posted the 7th goal for his side. YPS overall winner in business contest
Mohali, January 6 Seven students comprised the contingent that represented YPS in the business competition, which had 33 national and international teams participating in it. The competition was judged by 90 CEOs who were presently heading multinational companies in Pakistan as well as in other countries. YPS teacher Harinder Kaur accompanied the team. The competition had several events. For instance the team members comprising Bikramjit, Kajal, Ashishpal bagged second position in the business idea competition.
