Fashion passion
The Supreme Court of India re-criminalises homosexuality and it kicks up a storm in the fashion industry. With reasons self-explanatory, a popular fashion designer, who just tied the knot with his gay partner, was one among many to criticise the judgement on his Twitter handle. And so the year ended on the Indian fashion industry's calendar, with some lows, many highs; some fashion designers walking the path less trodden while creating clothes, while some playing it safe with bling and booti; some fashionistas getting it right all the time and some just trying too hard, yet scoring average on the style radar. Here is a round up.
Label game The Indian fashion follower got over the initial hiccups and took to online shopping. No wonder, besides some very popular online retail stores, a few were launched by celebrity faces known to understand, follow and wear fashion on the sleeve. From model Sonalika Sahay to style diva Malaika Arora Khan to Bipasha Basu, all announced their business plans. Bollywood's unannounced fashion teacher Sonam Kapoor revealed her plans to start a label with her sister. The worthiest tie-up between Bollywood and fashion happened later this year when Yash Raj Films launched the fashion label, Diva'ni, which is also an ode to the late founder of the country's giant production house.
High design The Cannes Film Festival is sure a chapter to mug up. So, this year witnessed the revival of the sari at Cannes. The absence of ethnic Indian elements last year was probably taken too seriously, as nose-rings sported by Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor spiralled out of nowhere. Forget the rationale behind it, Vidya Balan's matron-like dress lacked logic as well. But sari, nobody minds; neither Sonam's jacketed sari by Anamika Khanna nor Aiswarya Rai Bachchan's outing in a Sabyasachi sari. It was after a couple of years that Indian designers were worn and flaunted at the international mega-event. Sabyasachi and Anamika Khanna got lucky, so did Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla when Aishwarya took to a gown by the fashion designer duo. On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra surged ahead of all her competitors in India as she became the first Guess girl, not to forget it was shot by singer Bryan Adams!
Local flavour Chandigarh too woke up to a pleasant surprise early in April this year, as Elante became the meeting point of fashion lovers and labels. So now, there is Guess, Marks & Spencer, Spanish fast fashion label, Zara, Kenneth Cole, Brooks Brothers and the multi-label store, The Collective, housing Micheal Kors, Armani Jeans. Rest Chandigarh's date with fashion, as always, was limited to a Blenders Pride tour in September, a fashion show by Vero Moda and then by Marks & Spencer to launch their season's collection. Fashion designers made their presence felt through Adaah Couture, a store that flaunts all the big names of the industry. And if not a store as such, there were exhibitions and trunk shows by the likes of Nirav Modi, Salim Asgarally and Judith Leiber.
Bling story This year as well, fashion designers didn't shy away from cutting down on bling. They rather introduced new designs, newer material, not just to the ever-experimental prêt, but also to couture, which has glimmer and shimmer staple to it. Shantanu Nikhil did the magic with fushion fashion, where they combined a peplum top with a lehanga to create something exquisite. Gaurav Gupta added the dreaded black saree to the brides' wardrobe and Tarun Tahiliani created a white lehanga for his muse — the modern Indian bride. Rohit Bal, in an ode to his Kashmiri embroidery, replicated the same with modern twists on his creations and even added high venetian collars to the Indian wear. Amit Aggarwal, at his Lakme Fashion Week's outing, incorporated metal in his raw material to create clothes. His futuristic designs will take some time to find a market among his Indian clientele at least. ashima@tribunemail.com

Shining Starry Sky
What you see, sells. Going by this strategy, today stars from all walks of life are dotting space —right from the real, to reel to cyber! The City Beautiful had its own share of star footfalls in year 2013; some came to promote their movies, others the shows they host, yet others for the brands they endorse. All in all, Chandigarh saw this constant flow of celebs who came to woo the city folks.
Screen shot
Agreed, this is the era of promotions. More than who came, we were bothered about one who didn't. After rumours of Aamir Khan making a big appearance for college-goers doing the rounds in the region for Dhoom 3 and a 'no show', we had to make-do with his interview granted to Punjabi star Gippy
Grewal. But then many known names did register their presence- films stars right from Ranveer Singh who came little ahead of Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela to Deols for Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 had the city in a tizzy, as ardent fans wanted just a glimpse of these sons of the soil. Pretty Preity Zinta was here to promote her directorial venture Ishkq in Paris. We saw Keih Sequera, who opened his movie innings with Sixteen. And our true city star Milkha Singh brought the whole cast and crew of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, including Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. King Khan's Chennai Express made a brief halt at neighbouring Jalandhar where he with his leading lady Deepika Padukone, as both shared bits from their journey. Sizzling hot We had playgirl Sherlyn Chopra, sexy Sunny Leone and hottie Veena Malika, who all gathered a crowd in the tight security of bouncers. If beautiful Sunny's security was spearheaded by her doting hubby Daniel Weber, Sherlyn Chopra's Kamasutra 3D hype did not go down well with some. Veena Malik stepped in to Punjabi movies proclaiming her love for makki di roti, saag and makhan. Raring they go we were impressed by Sherlyn's aim of landing a 'Bond' girl someday! Telly zone The first couple of telly Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar's quick visit resulted in a melee as the young, old and kids alike tried to grab a glimpse, a click or more. Rob, the famous M.A.D host, came calling as did Art Attack anchor Gaurav Juyal. The two enjoyed rapt attention from kids and their mums as they shared tricks of their trade. What we liked was Rob's urge for adults to explore as much as kids. Shake it up boys Akshat Raj Saluja, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ojas Godatwar and Preet Rajput set the dance floor of fire. There were others too; Aman Verma inching his way to silver screen made a few rounds of the City Beautiful as did Kavita Kaushik aka Chandramukhi Chautala of popular serial FIR, who came promoting her already popular show along with her equally popular co-stars. Brand bargain Well, more stars, new and old, came to the city to endorse brands rather than their films. Bipasha Basu and Diana Penty looked a million bucks as they announced a new brand in Chandigarh. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan came calling for a jewellery showroom. Elante Mall brought its own share of celeb footfalls with the likes of Rahul Khanna and Dia Mirza amongst many others. Endorsing an oral brand, Raveena Tandon with her son Ranbirvardhan Thadani also came calling. Guest list What interested us was the fact that it was not only stars but also star-makers who did the rounds. Prasad Bidapa was here sharing more gossip than all stars put together, revealing how raw Bipasha looked when she landed in Mumbai from Kolkata to Anushka Sharma having this shaan of a superstar even at 13 when she joined the star-maker. "Glitter is out shimmer is in" declared celeb make-up expert Neha Khanna and there was an array of designers and make-up artistes visiting the city who are now stars in their own right. All in all a good year; here is looking forward to another; by the way Big B tops the city wish list! mona@tribunemail.com

pet passion Poonam Bindra "From an aversion to a passion is our story with Scotch," quips the effervescent Mala Dhanda, a certified jeweller by profession as she talks of their pet, a black and brown dachshund who was looking on so staidly as if he understood he was being mentioned and the centre of the conversation. Scotch came into the family as a birthday gift for Aaina, the younger Miss Dhanda, eight years ago and since then he has become the most important member of the family. He has a separate rapport with each one. As first time dog owners they had a special kennel built for him with a name plate Mr Scotch hanging at the entrance but Scotch had some other plans-he wanted the master bedroom. Mala says "I got a special bedding made for him on the floor but no, he wanted to sleep on the corner of our bed.”Mala and Sanjeev are themselves surprised at the transformation in them as they were confirmed dog haters. Very fond of non-vegetarian food and sweets, Scotch loves to play in the rain though ironically he dislikes taking a bath. Inayat, the elder daughter, tells us that "This little fellow knows his limits and will never climb onto granny's bed as he knows that is not allowed. But when nobody is at home he looks to her for company." Scotch loves the Sunday routine as they go to the farm house and he can romp around there freely. "It is amazing how he comes to know that it is a Sunday for he wants us just to get into the car and is so restless," informs Mala and terms him as the most sensitive and sensible canine ever, spreading warmth and cheer in the Dhanda household. Arjun, the son of the family, finds it so amazing that Scotch greets him with so much enthusiasm even if he meets him after 15 minutes. Altogether in unison they can never think of the home without him and if and when required they will bring a dachshund again. As of now, Scotch is too possessive of his family and will not let any other dog near the house even. |

star track Bollywood is a man's world, they say. But female screen scorchers like Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha surprised the audiences and critics with their performances this year, while others like Nimrat Kaur and Huma Qureshi impressed with their finesse in non-commercial outings. Here’s a look at the actresses who impressed with their choice of roles in tinsel town in 2013 Sonam Kapoor With films like Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Sonam proved her ease and finesse in portraying a demure desi girl as convincingly as she carries off her glamorous image at red carpet events. In Raanjhanaa, her acting prowess was lauded, while she even managed to impress in her bit role in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Deepika Padukone In 2013, Deepika scored what's a rarity for an actress in the Hindi film industry — four back-to-back hits. The success of Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela — each different from the other — not just proved the actress' versatility but also cemented her standing in the Hindi film world, where male talent seems to have ruled the roost so far. All of her films this year made it to the Rs 100 crore club! Richa Chadda This 'Bholi Punjaban' regaled the audiences and critics with films like Fukrey, Shorts and Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela this year. Richa's raw and riveting work has made her stand out of the crowd, earn a good press and appreciation by critics. Huma Qureshi After an impressive debut in 2012, Huma Qureshi kept up her standard of delivering a quality performance film after film. This year she kept the audiences entertained in a supernatural avatar in Ek Thi Daayan and as a daring explosives expert in D-Day. She even played a troubled youngster in Shorts. This one is a promising talent in tinsel town. And, yes, her unconventional looks add to her charm. Divya Dutta She is one actress whose talent shines through brightly even in the gleam of 'stars' in any Bollywood film and even when it may be just another supporting role. Whether it was Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Zila Ghaziabad, or Lootera, Divya, in her supporting roles turned out to be a big screen stealer. Nimrat Kaur What a revelation she was in The Lunchbox. The film had a unique script and she featured in a role that not most actresses would have risked their career for, but Nimrat did, and wowed. With her as-real-as-it-gets portrayal of a Mumbai-based housewife, who is lovelorn, she managed to deliver an indelible and impeccable performance alongside a giant like Irrfan Khan. She went places, literally! Shilpa Shukla That she can have a strong presence on the big screen is a fact that she proved with Chak De! India itself. With this year's B.A. Pass, an independent project, Shilpa played a bored fornicating housewife or more a sex guru to a young boy, essayed by Shadab Kamal. Definitely, a bold role that most wouldn't go for. Kangna Ranaut Sometimes it's her clothes and sometimes it's her accent, which is in the line of fire — but all said and done, Kangna Ranaut can act. Her choice of roles is often daring and different. For proof, sample her role as a mutant named Kaya in sci-fi adventure Krrish 3 or as a nautch girl in Rajjo. She also made a mark as John Abraham's love interest in Shootout at Wadala. — IANS
My chemistry with Arshad better in Dedh Ishqiya: Naseer
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah is confident that his chemistry with Arshad Warsi in Dedh Ishqiya is better and warmer since they starred together in the 2010 hit Ishqiya. In an interview, the 63-year-old was asked if his chemistry with Arshad has improved over time.
"Definitely, because in these three years we have become more experienced. We still know each other the same amount as we did three years back and we are not very close friends. But I know that we both love and appreciate each other," Naseeruddin said. He believes Arshad is a very secure actor like him. "When two such actors meet who are not insecure of the other and are not worried about their role as compared to the other, you enjoy working with that person," Naseeruddin said. The same, he said, goes for Madhuri Dixit, who plays the female lead in Dedh Ishqiya. "The same experience I had with Madhuriji also. I have been a big fan of hers even though I am senior than her. But I have always appreciated her work. She is also extremely confident and secure. I think this is what chemistry is all about," he said. Naseeruddin and Arshad reprise the roles of Khalujaan and Babban respectively in the film. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, Dedh Ishqiya also stars Huma Qureshi and hits theatres Jan 10, 2014. — IANS

Lucky run
With the success of R… Rajkumar, Shahid Kapoor has broken the mould and entered a massy genre. The movie's success has opened many doors for him and is going to bring him even more money.
Among the younger crop of actors, Shahid is the only one who has managed to cut through the out and out masala film segment. Owing to this the young actor has been approached by several brand advertisers... In the past two weeks, Shahid has been offered endorsements ranging from mobile phones to motorbikes to a suiting and shirting brand as well as one for vests. These brands have been on a look out for a brand ambassador who is popular among the masses at large Usually this ad segment is dominated by Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar who have a huge fan base especially in B and C towns. With the success of R… Rajkumar Shahid has managed to build a connect of sorts with audiences. A source says, "Shahid's never done such an out-and-out masala film with intense action scenes. So for the audience, it was a refreshing change to see him in this avatar. Shahid has won praise for his high-energy stunts in the film, which in turn, has attracted a lot of brands that are keen to sign a young ambassador with mass appeal, for their products. With R… Rajkumar being received well, especially in tier-II cities and towns, these brands are now keen to get him on board." R...Rajkumar is Shahid Kapoor's first hit in a long, long time. He is currently in Los Angeles with his friends on a holiday and to usher in 2014. He will return early next year.
Substance over style
Parineeti Chopra is all set for the promotions and release of Hasee Toh Phasee. She talks about movies, co-actors and more...
Dreams come true Like every actor, I wanted to work with top notch production houses and directors. Fortunately, I got a dream debut with the Yash Raj banner. I wanted to work with Karan Johar and that wish is being fulfilled with my upcoming release which he is co-producing with Anurag Kashyap. Both of them belong to different schools of filmmaking which is an enriching experience for any artiste. The film is a sweet love story between an eccentric scientist and a sweet boy. Helping costar Initially, when I met Siddharth Malhotra, he would keep to himself. It took a few meetings and interactions for him to open up, now I have to tell him to stop talking (laughs). He's a really cool guy. When I would be stuck with a scene, he was always ready to help me out. Direct take Initially, it bothered me when the media termed my friendship with Maneesh Sharma as an affair. But I have learnt to accept it. He is my best friend and I am glad that we share a comfort level where we can laugh off such stories. I understand that we are in a field which is under constant media scrutiny though it can get overwhelming at times. No inhibitions Ishaqzaade was about a girl who gets raped on the first night of her marriage, while Shuddh Desi Romace was about lovers who were driven by hormones. Both required performances where I couldn't draw a line. If I did that, then I would be limiting myself as actress and will be called an under-performer. I want to be known as the best actress and to prove that I want to take on good roles where I am willing to give my all. My films are a testament to that. Not fashionable I have never been fashion conscious. Earlier, I was not bothered about my clothes, hair or make up, but now I take efforts to look good. Yet, given a chance, I would erase fashion out of my life.
Fitness first
Hrithik Roshan was away in Los Angeles but had also taken his fitness trainer with him. He whipped himself into shape with workouts and a new diet while he was there. He had to get a lean and fit look for Bang Bang.
Knotty affairs
Sameera Reddy will tie the knot in April 2014 with biker beau Akshai Varde and Dia Mirza will tie the knot with Sahil Sangha on February 14, 2014.
Tweet buddies
Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra insist that they are just good friends but everyone knows the truth about that. She has recently tweeted: "Dhoom 3...Wow!" and we know Uday Chopra is more than pleased about it. Dhoom 3 has broken all box office records.
Sherlyn Chopra turns Bad Girl
From drinking and smoking to seducing young boys, starlet Sherlyn Chopra does all the bad things in the video of the song Bad Girl.
She steps off a bike and walks into a compound with semi clad buff boys craving for some piece of the action. She smokes and croons, "Ghuma lo telephone, doston ko bula lo, ho gayi khatam, som ras mangwa lo…logon ka kaam hai kehna, unko toh kehne dena, I don't give a damn, unn sabko meri aur se, coz I'm a bad girl." The song has Sherlyn Chopra in a range of skimpy clothes from frayed tops to hot pants. She even displays some twerking moves. Bad Girl has rap and lyrics by Mika. Music is produced by Nickk.
SRK in Raees
Rahul Dholakia's Raees stars Shah Rukh Khan as a bootlegger and Farhan Akhtar as a police inspector. The film is in its initial stages and a lot of casting and crew formation is yet to be done. The crime thriller period film will be shot in Gujarat and is based on a true stories and real-life incidents.
Old memories revisited
After nearly thirteen years, veteran actress Lata Mangeshkar recently visited her old colleague and rakhee brother Dilip Kumar. Although she was lost for a while in the maze of crisscrossing roads in Bandra till she found the way to the bungalow on Pali Hill where Dilip Kumar lives with his wife. She recalled how she often visited his old bungalow which has gone under renovation in the past. She enjoyed the company of Dilip Sahab's sisters who were very fond of her. "I could not recognise the roads as tall buildings have come up everywhere. Since Yousuf Bhai treated me like a sister, his sisters were like sisters to me especially his eldest sister who liked to hear me sing ghazals of Ghalib," she said. Dilip Kumar instantly recognised Lata and welcomed her with tears of joy. The two sat down and exchanged memories and even spoke in Marathi at times. As Lata reminded him of the duet they sang for Musafir under Salil Chowdhary's baton, Dilip Kumar, who celebrated his ninety-first birthday on December 11, began humming the song much to Lata's amusement.

The animated version of Mahabharata is quite a delight to watch and otherwise too, it is a nice and informative film. Namita
Kaushal, student Informative show It's a decent attempt towards experimenting with animation. Also, the film is good. It's a nice way to inform the children about the rich mythology of India. Seema Sharma, student Real touch I like the film. The characters in the film are very real too, perhaps because they have been made to resemble the actors, who have given the voiceovers. I really like the film. Also, my kids enjoy it too. Penina Singh, homemaker — As told to Amarjot Kaur
