Rs 26 cr spent, but stadia not fit to hold events
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Mohali, December 25
Over Rs 26 crores were spent on constructing four sports complexes in the town by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), seemed to have gone down the drain as several defects have started developing in these complexes within two months of its inauguration.

Cracks in walls, sinking-in of floors, seepage in walls, leakage in swimming pool, broken tiles and doors, stains in granite stones are visible in the complexes. It not only showed the poor picture of these sports complexes but also indicated that substandard material was used in the construction.

Shockingly, the newly built sports complexes, located at Sectors 59, 61, 63 and 65, are yet to open for public.

During a random visit of these sports complexes, The Tribune team found that tiles from the outer wall of Sports complex at Sector 59 had already fallen down. A big crack has developed on the main outer wall of the building. The floor at various places was also seen sinking in. Leakage of drain water in the newly built swimming pool, its main pipe and safety tank there also pointed out the quality of work. As big gaps between the outer walls and sheet-roof have been left, pigeons and other birds were seen flying around inside the complex.

Shortsightedness of the contractor and the concerned GMADA officials was evident as the floor of the badminton courts was polished with ordinary polish instead of melamine polish.

According to a sports official, the melamine polish, which is costlier than the ordinary polish, increases the life of the floor by more than 10 years. “Apart from that, the ordinary polish on the courts can pose injury threat to players as they can slip on it while melamine polish reduces the slippery conditions drastically”, said the official. Besides, installing special lighting system in table tennis hall and badminton courts, ordinary rods have been installed.

“There is leakage in the roof of the stadium and during rains water seeps inside the complex”, said a staff member.

At Sector 61 sports complex, the floor of skating rink is not only uneven but it has also started sinking in. Several floor tiles of basketball court and volleyball court there have also already broken in while the two tennis courts have been left incomplete.

The story is no different in the sports complex at Sector 65, where one can see the same poor conditions.

“Due to poor quality of work and shortsightedness of authorities, none of these complexes is fit to organise even a state-level sports events. The large amount spent on the construction, certainly has gone down the drains, admitted a senior official of GMADA on the condition of anonymity.

BUDGET OF COMPLEXES

In the first allotment, a sum of about Rs 11 crores was allotted to complete these four complexes. Later, an enhancement of around Rs 11.50 crore was given for the job. The final expenditure on these complexes was about Rs 26 crores. A senior official of GMADA admitted that as a large amount of public money has been wasted on substandard and poor quality of work here, the vigilance inquiry should be conducted to fix the responsibility of erring officials. “Enhancement of around 150 per cent in the budget is not possible under any provision. This aspect should also be checked,” said a senior official of GMADA.
