Student bags gold in BSc exam

DERA BASSI, DECEMBER 22
Syed Mehjoob Un-Nisa, a student of Sri Sukhmani International Polytechnic for Women, Dera Bassi, has been awarded a gold medal in BSc (Textile Designing) at the annual convocation of the Panjab Technical University (PTU), Jalandhar.

Prof Avtar Singh, chairman of Sri Sukhmani Group of Institutions, said the faculty and staff of the institute ensure that the students give an outstanding performance during the exams. He congratulated the student for the exceptional performance and hoped that the other students would also get inspired by this and would work hard. Speaking on the occasion, Kanwaljit Kaur, director, Sri Sukhmani Group of Institutions, said, “International Polytechnic for Women has been working tirelessly for the education and employment of women since 1970s.”

Deputy manager of PNB booked for fraud

Chandigarh, December 22
Two cases of cheating were reported in the city today. In the first case, the police booked the deputy manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB) for duping a resident of Uttar Pradesh on the pretext of sending him abroad.

Mandeep Singh, a resident of Bilaspur, Uttar Pradesh, alleged that Balbir Singh, deputy manager, PNB, Chandigarh, and a resident of Panchkula, took cash from the complainant for providing him a Canadian work visa, but he never sent him abroad.

In another incident, Neena Bali, a resident of Sector 23, alleged that SuKumar Sau of Diya Jewellers, Sector 23, took Rs 60,000 in cash from her instalments under some chit-fund scheme. But on the completion of scheme, the accused neither gave her jewellery nor returned the invested money. A case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Delhi’s Sanjay Sikand fastest autocrosser

Mohali, December 22
Rallyists from Delhi won the top honours following the final rounds of the 5th edition of OYA Autocross, Motocross and Offroad Challenge concluded here in Mohali today. In OYA Autocross 2013, Sanjay Sikand of Delhi was the overall fastest followed by Anil Wadia of Delhi and Harvinder Kushwaha of Ludhiana.

In Motocross 2013, the first prize was bagged by Rajan Sidhu of Ludhiana. Chandigarh's star biker Mohit Verma stood second while Deepak Madan of the city was ranked third.

In the Offroad Challenge, the first prize went to Kabir Waraich. Karan Bali stood second while the third prize was shared by Harman Gill and Abhinandan. All of them are from Chandigarh. Kabir, Karan and Harman are members of Chandigarh-based Gerrari Offroaders, one of the biggest motorsport clubs of the country.

In the women's category, the first prize went to Garima Avtar of Delhi. Nidhi Aulakh of Chandigarh stood second followed by Amanpreet Kaur, also from the city.

Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti inaugurated the final rounds of the event at the GMADA grounds in Phase 8. After the inauguration ceremony, A2B stunt riders put up a spectacular show. The venue witnessed a huge rush of spectators as competitors zoomed their bikes and four-wheelers on the track in the final rounds today.

Gulpreet Aulakh, a patron of the Old Yadvindrians Association (OYA), and founder of the Team Chandigarh Adventure Sports (TCAS), said the heavy rain during the day made the track tricky and faster. "The driving skills of the competitors were tested to the hilt. The event became more interesting because of the rain and the wet track," he said.

Nikhil Jaspal of TCAS said it was a matter of pride that the Autocross, Motocross and Offroad Challenge was held on the longest track in the north India.

As many as 160 competitors took part in the OYA Autocross, Motocross and Offroad Challenge. There were 10 categories in Autocross and five categories in Motocross.

Shemrock Ace Tennis Tournament
Players to clash for title today

Mohali, December 22
As many as 100 players from tricity participated on Day 1 of Shemrock Ace Tennis Tournament, here today. The tournament was divided into different categories according to age group, i.e. under-10 (boys), under-12 (boys), under-14 (boys) and under-12 (girls).

The chairman of Shemrock School, AS Bajwa, congratulated players for performing well in the matches and said the main motive of organising the tournament is to create an active and fun tennis environment for players. “Such tournaments not only enhance physical strength but also boost mental growth,” said Bajwa.

In boys (U-10) category, Jaskirat Chugh, Reyan, Dhairya, Kumar Mahismat, Gurustat, Ebrahim and Jaspreet Singh won the 2nd round steered into next level.

In boys (U-12) category, Sidarth Goyal, Samarth Suri, Abhinav, Anmol and Kumar Mahismat won the matches today and advanced to the next level.

The final rounds in all the categories will be held tomorrow.

Amarjit lifts overall golf championship trophy

Panchkula, December 22
Amarjit Brara from the USA successfully defended his title and won the overall championship trophy in the Chandigarh Golfing Tour that concluded at Panchkula Golf Club today.

Brara’s score of six-over-par 78 was enough to pave his way to the top spot with a three-day tally of 231. Brara left his nearest rival, Neil Singh Chahal, a good nine strokes behind.

Sukhi Gill, also from the USA, was the overall winner in the nett category finishing with an overall nett tally of 207. Dalminder, USA, fired the best card of two-over-par, 74, on the final day with Sikander S Kaleka finishing three strokes behind at 77. In the overall gross standing, however, Minhas finished third at 241.

In the 15-24 handicap category, Surjit clinched the gross title at 82. In the nett standings, Hzarbans Singh of Malaysia won in the 0-14 handicap category at 64, while Anil of Canada notched the second spot. Sukhi Gill triumphed in the 15-24 handicap category at 67, while Raja Sandhu stood second at 68. YS Sangha won the gross title among the invitees at 81. JS Bhatt clinched the second spot. The nett title in the invitees’ category was won by Amrinder Aulakh. Deshbir Singh finished second at 68.

As many as 60 NRIs participated in the Tourism Golf Trophy. Besides the NRI participants, a batch of 35 invitees also participated in the tournament. The three-day long tournament was held at the SEPTA course in Chandimandir, Chandigarh Golf Club and then Panchkula Golf Club, where the prize distribution ceremony was conducted today.

243 take part in chess tourney

Chandigarh, December 22 
During the All-India Open Below 2000 Fide Rating Chess Championship-2013, Rajesh, Sudhir, Ishaan, Pavit, Akshay, Sumit, DS Negi and Bhat Siddharth led the table with four points each in the end of the fourth round, here today. 

As many as 243 players are participating in the mega event organised by Chandigarh Chess Academy at St Xavier’s School, Sector 44. Participants from 16 different states of India are vying for the title. — TNS
