Yaami Gautam will soon be seen in Aman Ki Asha

There could not have been a better brand ambassador than the fair and lovely Yaami Gautam for a famous fairness cream. But that was just the beginning of a fairytale that launched one of the classiest personas in Bollywood through the unpredictable Shoojit Sircar film Vicky Donor. She continues to model for prestigious brands of different products but is not seen on the big screen. She tries to evade answering why but one manages to get through this intelligent girl with the right brains in the right place.

Why have we not seen you after your thumping hit debut Vicky Donor?

I really don’t have an answer to that. Maybe, I was biding my time or my directors were. Vicky Donor tackled an issue no filmmaker had ever touched before. This placed me in some ambivalent bracket, I do not know. But you will soon see me in a very exciting film.

Let us hear about it.

We recently wrapped up the shoot of Aman Ki Asha written by Neeraj Pandey who directed two unique films A Wednesday and Special 26. But he has not directed this film. It has been directed by Eeshwar Nivas and I am playing Asha in the film. It was wonderful working with both Neeraj and Eeswhar.

How was it working with Shoojit?

I was not mature enough or had the brains to understand what he was doing when I was working in Vicky Donor. I was just learning the ropes and trying to avoid making mistakes. I was not very clear about the subject either. None of us even imagined that the film would turn out to be such a big blockbuster considering that it had no big star names, was not a big budget film and the story was edgy. I knew that the director knew his job and was confident about what he was doing. After watching Madras Caf`E9, I said, "Wow! Here is a director to watch out for." Just look at the man’s range — from Vicky Donor to a cutting-edge political action thriller and how! It moved at a jet-like pace, and there was not a second that took your attention away from the screen.

We hear you are doing a film opposite Ajay Devgn to be directed by Prabhudeva?

I am a great fan of Prabhudeva and have been following his work since Urvashi. Just imagine wearing so many caps and doing so well in all of them — dancer, choreographer, actor and director. I hope to pick up some solid dancing under his tutelage, if he agrees. I am not allowed to talk about my films but this belongs to a completely different genre and having Ajay Devgn in it will not give you a clue — he is so versatile you never know what to expect next! I have also done Gauravam with Sirish from the South.

But are you in Shoojit and John Abraham's Hamara Bajaj?

I owe my present status in the film industry to Shoojit and John and the entire team that was in Vicky Donor. If I am a part of it, I will feel privileged. As of now, I do not have a definite answer.

Stress busters?

I love cooking North Indian delicacies with paneer and chicken but would love to learn to cook fish the way Bengalies do. I also read a lot and have just finished Dan Brown’s Inferno. I listen to music. Rihanna is one of my favourites. I love to visit Himachal Pradesh because that is where my roots are.
