Tavera-Audi accident
Owner of Audi moves High Court
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 10
Adding a twist to the controversy hovering around the Tavera-Audi accident, the owner of the Audi car today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to implead him as a party in the matter.

The application will come up for hearing on Thursday, when the case comes up for resumed hearing. In the application, through senior advocate RS Cheema, he has requested the court to hear him before passing any orders on the petition filed in the matter. The Chandigarh police have been at the receiving end, with the High Court rapping them on their knuckles for 'shoddy investigations' in the accident case. The High Court, on the previous date of hearing, had questioned the police on the method of their investigations that left the task of gathering evidence to the victim's kin.

In response to the queries by Justice Amol Rattan Singh, the police made attempts to justify their actions by claiming that a special investigation team was constituted and the erring officials were was placed under suspension. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory, too, was asked to step in. Taking a note of the contentions, Justice Amol Rattan Singh asked the Chandigarh police to carry out the probe expeditiously. The assertion came after the victim's family expressed apprehensions on the delay in receiving the CFSL report. Before parting with the case, the Judge fixed November 6 as the next date of hearing.

The directions came on a petition filed by Yash Pal Juneja, father of the 21-year-old victim. Two college students from Ghaziabad and the taxi driver had died on the spot when their Chevrolet Tavera was involved in a collision with Audi Q7 after the vehicle crossed over the divider. The accident occurred on July 24 around 1 am. Initially, the Chandigarh police registered a case against the taxi driver who died in the accident. It was only after a hue and cry was raised that a case was registered against the SUV driver.

Blaming the Chandigarh police for carrying out 'tainted' investigations, the father has sought transfer of the probe to some independent investigating agency. He alleged that the accused was close to politicians.
