Guidelines of SC have little effect

The Supreme Court guidelines to the states for keeping a check on the open sale of acid in the wake of rising cases of acid attack seem to have had a little effect in the city as its sale goes unchecked in several parts of the city.
LIT passes the buck to MC on encroachments, violations

Even as the vigilance wing of the Local Government Department as well as the state vigilance bureau are looking into massive encroachments and brazen violations of building bylaws and illegal change of land use in various colonies developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), the LIT authorities have admitted that except for sending notices to the violators, no further action has been taken.
Kanwalpreet brings laurels to city
Ludhiana, December 8
Kanwalpreet Singh (20), a differently abled youth, has brought laurels to the city by winning two medals in the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games held in Sydney (Australia) from December 1 to 7.
Kanwalpreet participated in the bocce contest (Italian bowling played on a long narrow dirt court) and won gold medal in the singles and bronze medal in doubles events.

Play competition
Ludhiana: An inter-house English play competition was held in DRVDAV Centenary Public School,
Phillaur. “Nature” was the theme of the play. First prize was bagged by Prosperity house, Dignity house got second prize and Unity house got third prize. Principal Yogesh Gambhir congratulated the winners and said such plays sensitise the students about nature.

The soft tone of SAD MLA Simarjit Singh Bains during the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation’s General House meeting held on Friday raised several eyebrows. Bains and his group of

Trade unions to hold protest at Parliament on Dec 12
Ludhiana, December 8
Addressing the rally of Hosiery Workers Union (AITUC) at Basti Jodhewal Chowk, today, DP Maur, general secretary, joint council of trade unions, Ludhiana, said the Government is more inclined to respond to the demands of the international finance capital and the MNCs while hitting the common man hard, even denying them basic amenities like food, shelter, health and education.
Acupuncture helpful in de-addiction: Experts

A national meet on acupuncture was organised at Dr Kotnis Hospital. Acupuncture experts from
different parts of the country have descended for the two-day meet to discuss the recognition of the therapy. Dr Debasis Bakshi, director of Indian Research Institute for Integrated Medicine said acupuncture can be very effective in treating drug addiction. He said in US jails, acupuncture is used for treating persons suffering from the problem of drug addiction.
Chrysanthemum show begins

Chrysanthemum flower show and competition was organised at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Sarabha
Nagar. More than 250 varieties of chrysanthemums including variants of snowball, pompon, obsession in decorative, spider,
quilled, spoon, anemone, reflexed and others were on display during the event. People from various parts of the city participated in the show.

Medical camps held
Ludhiana, December 8
A medical camp was organised by Senior Citizens Conclave in cooperation with Temple of Humanity Trust at Adarsh Public School. Almost 500 patients comprising largely from the marginalised sections of the society were screened during the camp. Naturopathy and Yoga Camp was also set-up to apprise the patients of the relevance of maintaining good health.
Date extended for providing subsidised LPG cylinders
Ludhiana, December 8
Gas agencies have extended the date of providing domestic gas cylinders at subsidised rates till January 1, 2014. Earlier, the agencies were told by their respective companies to provide cylinders at subsidised rates till December 1 only.

Supporters of the BJP celebrated the victory of Bhartiya Janta Party in the Vidhan Sabha elections in four states, the result of which were declared today. They celebrated party's victory at Clock Tower by bursting crackers and by distributing sweets.

Woman dies in head-on collision, son injured
Jagraon, December 8
A middle-aged woman was killed while her son suffered critical injuries when a car rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway, near Sugar Mill, here early this morning.
The deceased has been identified as Kamlesh Aggarwal, wife of NN Aggarwal of Moga. Their son, Aman Agarwal, is undergoing treatment at the DMCH, Ludhiana. His condition is stated to be critical.
Three missing girls rescued
Ludhiana, December 8
The city police today recovered three minor girls who had went missing on November 7 under mysterious circumstances from outside their house in Thrike village.
The trio, Neha, Vandana and Sanjana, was found from a dhaba in Phillaur.

Rs 3.5 lakh in cash, cellphones stolen in separate incidents
Ludhiana, December 7
The police today witnessed two theft incidents in the city. In the first incident, thieves struck at a mobile phone shop located at Tibba Road and decamped with cash and mobile phone handsets worth over Rs 3 lakh.
