advocate’s murder
Hearing on January 8

Mohali, December 4
In the murder case of advocate Amarpreet Singh Sethi, doctors who conducted the post-mortem of the deceased gave their statements in the court today.

All the accused were present in the court on the occasion. The next date of hearing has been fixed for January 8.

Dr JS Gill and Dr Parminderjit Singh, who were members of the team of the local Civil Hospital, recorded their statements in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Manjot Kaur.

A hospital official, Sushil Kumar, presented the reports of X-ray examination and the MLC on the occasion.

The accused, who were not represented by any lawyer, declined the offer of free legal-aid made by the judge.

Outside the court premises, the mother and fiancée of one of the accused objected to mediapersons taking their photographs.

Both of them allegedly attempted to break a camera and threatened them.

Punjab Shiv Sena leader sent to judicial custody

Mohali, December 4
The police presented a Punjab Shiv Sena leader in the court of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) here today. SDM Lakhmir Singh sent him to judicial custody till December 12.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjiv Ghanouli was detained by the Mohali police under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPc. Ghanouli had also been arrested by the Kharar police yesterday and was produced in a court today which released him on bail.

According to information, the party leader had threatened to take 100 cows to the residence of the Chief Minister in Chandigarh to seek proper welfare measures for them. A timely intervention by the police disrupted him from doing so. — OC

Woman robbed of jewellery, cash

A 50-year-old woman was robbed of her gold jewellery and cash amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh in the busy market of Sector 11 here today when she was approached by a tricker posing as a saint who asked her to remove all her jewellery before chanting some mantras allegedly for getting resolved all her issues. When the victim, Satya Devi, got back the handkerchief in which she had put her jewellery before giving to the accused, she found her gold jewellery was replaced with the metal one.

The victim, a resident of Sector 12, Panchkula, had gone to a grocery shop to make some payment.

The victim said she was approached by a person who asked her a particular address but as she gave him a vague reply of not knowing the same, he left her.

Later, a woman in her late forties approached her and told her that the man whom she was talking rudely was a big "saint" who can solve all issues of any person,” alleged the victim.

The accused was sitting in a car.

The police said as per the victim’s complaint, the woman who approached her, first removed all her jewellery and kept the same in a handkerchief and handed over the same to the accused saint, who enchanted some mantras and returned it to her.

When Devi’s turn came, who was sitting in the car with them, she did the same thing. She removed her gold earrings, two bangles and cash and gave the same wrapped in a handkerchief to the accused. After chanting some mantras, he returned the same to her.

When Devi got down from the car, she found that her jewellery was replaced with metal ornaments.

Students’ date with PT Usha

Sprinter PT Usha today shared her experience with youngsters and inspired them to take up sports as their career. “Today young generation is hard working but they want results too quickly, which is not possible in sports. To excel in sports full commitment and dedication is needed, she said while addressing the students at Swami Ram Tirtha Public School in Phase-V here today.

She also motivated the students to participate in the 2nd edition of the national level talent-hunt for India's fastest and youngest running sensation in 60 meter and 100-meter sprint that will take place on December 8 at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula.

The event is organised by Mumbai based KOOH Sports.

The students aged between 8 to 16 can participate in the competition, which is being held in 11 cities and winners of each city will called for the final, to be held on 9 February next year in Mumbai. The final winners of Speedster season 2 will get a chance to train in Australia with Sharon Hannan, world-renowned Australian athletics coach. Interested students can register on the website www.speedstar.in.

PT Usha who is the brand ambassador for this talent-hunt said the first edition of this competition last year reached more than 40,000 kids and this year we are hoping to motivate more students for this programme.

“Athletics as a sport is fading at the school level. This competition is a serious business that will motivates students to take up athletics as a career,” she said.

She said she still regrets not winning an Olympics medal for the country and missing it by a whisker in the 1984 Olympics. But the country has got lot of young talented children and we have the capability of winning the gold medal in athletics.

She patiently answered the students’ questions. Replying one of the questions, she said the country has good sports infrastructure in almost all the states. What we need is the 100 per cent determination from the sportsmen to raise their bar for the international competition, she stated.

She said what made athletics supreme among all the sports is that it requires more fitness and perfect balance between body and mind.

Chirag Patel, director and chief strategy officer, KOOH Sports, said this initiative was conceptualised with an intention to motivate kids and encourage schools to partake in athletics. We hope a lot of enteries from youngsters from the region for December 8 heat in Panchkula. Similar rounds will be held in Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Pune, Goa, Cochin, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad before the grand final in Mumbai next year.

Badminton meet
Daniel, Sankeerth to clash in final

Daniel Farid of Karnataka beat Kanishq of Andhra Pardesh in the boys’ under-17 semi-finals match in the ongoing 8th Junior National Badminton Championship-2013, here today. He reached the final by beating his opponent 21-19 18-21 and 21-18.

Another semi-final winner in this category was Sankeerth from the Karnataka beat Chirag Sen of Air India 14-21 21-15 21-12.

In girls’ U-17 semi-finals, Karishma Wadkar of Maharastra beat Shikha Gautam of Karnataka 21-11 22-20 to reach the final. Ruthvika Shivani of AP beat Mrunmayi Saoji from Maharastra 21-7 21-13 and reached final. In boys’ U-19 semi-final match Arun George of Kerela beat Harsheel Dani of Air India 17-21 21-16 25-23 to reach the final.

Quarter finals matches were held in girls’ U-19 category. In first match Rituparna Das of AP beat Karishma Wadkar of Maharastra 21-13 21-9. In another match, Rasika Raje of Maharastra beat Shriyanshi Pardeshi of Air India 21-17 23-21.

In mix-doubles U-19, Sanyam Shukla and Meghana reached finals by beating Chandrabhushan Tripathi and Anushka Kuvelkar 21-5 21-16. Another finalists in this category are Sankeerth BR and Mira Mahadevan who defeated Kabir Kanzarkar and Ahillya Harjani 19-21 21-17 21-14.

In boys’ under-19 doubles, Shlok Ramchandran and Sanyam Shukla beat Arun George and Aditya Joshi 21-16 and 21-17. Rohan Kapoor and Saurabh Sharma beat Chaitanya KP Gangadhara Rao 18-21, 21-14 and 23-21.

Arjun and Chirag Shetty beat Kawaldeep Singh and Rupinder Singh 15-21, 21-16, 21-13. Sanidhya Bandoont and Vinay Kumar Singh beat Naveen M and Vembarasan 21-13 and 21-16.

Chandigarh Baptist School beat St Soldier by 63 runs

Chandigarh Baptist School defeated St Soldier School in the ongoing 16th Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament here at St John’s School, Sector 26.

Batting first, Chandigarh Baptist team piled up a total of 155/4 in 20 overs.

Ayush with a 50 score of 40 balls was the highest scorer for the winning team followed by Paarth who played an important knock of 34 runs.

In reply, St Soldier School tried hard but came under pressure and fell short of the winning total by 63 runs. It could pile-up 92 runs for 9 wickets in stipulated 20 overs match. Ritik (31) and Mukul (14) were their main scorers.

In the second match, Mount Carmel School defeated Manav Mangal School by 33 runs.

Winning the toss, Mount Carmel batted first and score 166 run for the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs. Jannatpreet Singh’s 60 runs of 31 balls played a vital part in team’s total. Ramandeep Singh’s 49 runs of 38 balls also helped the team.

However the losing Manav Mangal team could not keep up the scoreboard going as the team fell short of 33 runs.

Tomorrows DPS will play against Manav Mangal and Ryan school will play against Shishu Niketan School.

Saupin’s clinch cricket trophy

Saupin's School, Sector 32, clinched GNPS Inter- School U-17 Cricket Championship beating Stepping Stone School, Sector 37, in the final match held at the Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36. GNPS and Chandigarh Cricket Association jointly organised this tournament.

Stepping Stone team won the toss and elected to ball first. Saupin's made 158 runs in 20 overs with a loss of 5 wickets.

Swapnil from Saupin's made 37 runs in 26 balls. But Prithvi Lahotiya’s knock of 50 runs of 40 balls that stood out and helped the team to pile up a winning total. Manan and Ayush also made 19 and 16 runs in 19 and 11 balls respectively.

In reply Stepping Stone team couldn't achieve the given target and made only 128 runs in 20 overs, thereby losing the match by 31 runs. Yogesh played well with 60 runs in 50 balls but it was not enough for the team to win the match.

Satyam and Swapnil both took 2 wickets each by giving away 24 and 6 runs respectively. In the end Prithvi Lahotiya from Saupin's was chosen as the man of the series. Yogesh and Charanpreet from Stepping Stone were chosen as best batsman and the best bowler respectively.

Saupin's: 158 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs (Swapnil 37 runs, Prithvi Lahotiya 50 runs, Manan 19 runs Ayush 16 runs).

Volleyball tourney begins today

The Chandigarh Volleyball Association is going to conduct sub-junior, junior (Boys and Girls) and Senior (Men &Women) State Volleyball Championship from December 5 to 8 at Sports Complex, Sector 7, Chandigarh.

During the trials the probables will be selected to represent Chandigarh in the forthcoming Junior National Championship being held at Deheradun (Uttrakhand) and Senior National Championship being held at Muradabad (UP) respectively. In the camp, coaches and technocrats will impart extensive training to the candidates to achieve better results and to compete in the national event.

In sub-junior section, players born on or after 1.1.98 and in junior players born on or after 1.1.96 are eligible to participate in the championships. Officials said all the affiliated unit, educational institutions and departments having teams can send their entries to Dr Suresh Kumar, volleyball coach, Sports Complex Sector 7, Chandigarh.

Vijay Merchant Trophy
Punjab beat Haryana

Patiala, December 4
Punjab defeated Haryana by an innings and 81 runs in their three-day league match of (U-16) Vijay Merchant Trophy at Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium, Patiala. Electing to bat, Haryana were bowled out for 213 in 81 overs. AD Tanwar (79) and PR Dalal (41) were the main contributors for Haryana while Mayank Markande 5 for 53 and Resham Sharma 3 for 55 shared the spoils for Punjab.

Punjab in reply declared their first innings at 451 for 8 in 106 overs. Shubman Gill made 205 runs. For Haryana AD Tanwar (4 for 80) was the pick of the bowlers. Haryana in their 2nd innings crumbled for 157 in 71.4 overs with Resham Sharma (5 for 29) and Nipun Pandita (3 for 36) doing most of the damage. — TNS

Basketball tourney
New Public, Sacred Heart School win titles

Chandigarh, December 4
New Public School, Sector 18, and Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, clinched St Kabir Basketball Trophy in boys U-17 and girls U-16 category respectively, in the finals held at St Kabir School today.

The final match in boys U-17 category was held between St Kabir School and New Public School.

The New Public School team played well and won the final match with 59-32. The girl U-16 final was held between Sacred Heart and St Xavier's Chandigarh. The team of Sacred Heart School won the match 27-13.

Selection trials for women on December 10

Chandigarh, December 4
The Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration, will conduct the selection trials for 39th National Women Sports Competitions - 2013-14 on December 10. The competition will be held between January 7 and10.

The trails for athletics will be held at 3 pm on December 10 at Sports complex while the trials for badminton will start after 3 pm at GMSSS, Sector 23. The trails for table-tennis will be held at Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, after 3 pm.

All the interested sportspersons must approach for trials with 3 photographs and proof of age. The age of the participants should be below 25 years as on 31.12.2013. — TNS
