2-day heritage fest ends on a musical note

Heavy footfall of over 20,000 visitors was witnessed on the second consecutive day of the 8th Heritage Festival at Mughal Gardens, Pinjore, organised by the Department of Haryana Tourism. Kuldip Sharma, speaker, Haryana, drew curtains of the Heritage Festival at Pinjore Gardens on Sunday.

Chokhi Dhani had set up a stall that had authentic Rajasthani dishes such as ‘dal bhatti churma’ and ‘gatte ki sabzi’. Also, the street food being offered by the Institutes of Hotel Management from Haryana was a popular choice.

A special treat to watch was the ‘Craft Bazaar’ specially crafted on the bastion of the Mughal Gardens to remind people about the old Mughal traditions. It was a shopping paradise as craftsperson from all over India participated in the festival showcasing the finest traditions of handlooms and handicrafts of various states of India.

The Heritage Festival concluded on a musical note. Amidst the royal setting of the Pinjore Gardens, the music lovers came together to enjoy an evening of Sufi music witnessing Sufi singing by internationally renowned Sufi vocalists Hari and Sukhmani.

The artistes of Northern Central Zone Cultural Centre (NCZCC), Allahabad, captivated the audience with acts such as Brij ki Holi, Manipuri dances and Badhai from Madhya Pradesh that lent a cultural flavour to the fest.

Students from various schools performed folk dances while the drawing contest witnessed schoolchildren depicting various scenes of the Heritage Festival in an impressive way.

Showstoppers of the day were the senior citizens, who took part in the ‘Heritage Walk’. In their mid seventies, Usha Sharma and Parkash Ahluwalia danced on ‘lungi dance’.

Suicide case: PUTA meeting sought

The Panjab University Teachers’ Union (PUTA) executive member Akshaya Kumar has written to the its president Devinder Singh, asking him to convene a meeting to discuss the alleged role of a teacher of Dr HS Jusge Institute in the suicide case of a student. He said it became the responsibility of PUTA to follow its course of activities. It is unfortunate but we need to play our role, he added.

A 22-year-old second year student of the institute had allegedly committed suicide on Friday. Yesterday, the police booked a teacher after the suicide note held the teacher responsible.

Meanwhile, the union expressed grief over the unnatural and untimely demise of the girl student.

The teacher concerned enjoys impeccable reputation among students and teachers. This is the time to offer condolences to the bereaved family, said the union president, Devinder Singh.

Man killed in road mishap

ZIRAKPUR, DECEMBER 1
A person was killed in a road accident that took place on the Zirakpur flyover on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Somain Dang of Savitri Flats, Zirakpur and hailing from Calcutta, West Bengal.

An unidentified vehicle hit the motorcycle of the deceased while he was returning from his duty. The police have registered a case against the driver of the unidentified vehicle under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC.

Woman accuses rival party of issuing threat

Mohali, December 1
A complaint has been lodged by a woman living in Phase XI here stating that she was allegedly kidnapped by some persons in order to compel her to withdraw a case.

According to the police, Barkha said on November 29 when she was heading towards her house from a temple around 7.45 pm, four persons (aged 28-35 years) in a white car allegedly forced her into the car and later took her to Sector 69 in Chandigarh. She said that they slapped and threatened her to withdraw the case lodged with the Women’s Cell of the police.

A case under Section 365 of the IPC has been registered against the unidentified persons in this regard.

2 duped of Rs 13 lakh

Rajiv Kumar, a resident of Chandigarh, has lodged a complaint against Taneja Developers and Infrastructures Limited for cheating him. He told to the police that he gave Rs 10 lakh to the company for purchasing a plot. However, no plot was allegedly allotted to him and neither was the money returned.

Rajiv Kumar lodged his complained in a court which directed the police to register an FIR after which a case was registered under Sections 406, 420, 465, 467, 468 , 471, 120 B and 34 of the IPC in this regard.

Same is the case of Abdul Qadir, a resident of Maloya, Chandigarh, where he gave Rs 3 lakh as earnest money to Sushil Kumar of Chandigarh for purchasing a plot in LIC Colony, Kharar. Similarly, neither had he got the plot, nor was his money returned to him.

A case was registered under Sections 406, 420 and 120 B of the IPC in this regard. — OC

PU girls win kabaddi meet

Bringing laurels to city beautiful and Panjab University, for the first time in the history of the institution, the Women Kabaddi team of Panjab University has won the All India Inter-University Kabaddi Championship.

The championship concluded today at the YS Parmar University of Horticulture, Nauni (Solan). In the final match the team of Panjab University defeated CCS Meerut University 27-11. Earlier, in the quarter-finals and league stage matches, the team outclassed Kamraj University, Madhurai, Krishna University, Andhra Pradesh, MGK University, Varanasi, and RPM University, Nagpur.

Earlier, on two occasions, the women’s Kabaddi team bagged silver medals in the all-India inter university championship. Back in years 1994 and 1996, the team performed well and bagged the medals. On reaching to Panjab University, the vice-chancellor welcomed the team members and promised to honour the entire team. Later, the team was given a tea party by the officials of Directorate of Sports. “Our team deserved this victory. All the players gave their best and nailed down their strong rivals. It is after a long period that the university has won gold medal in the Kabaddi event at an all India inter-university level,” said Sanjeev Sharma, manager of the team.

“All the members contributed equally. Tips given during coaching camp, prior to the competition, proved fruitful for us. We all are very happy,” said Nidhi, captain of the team. A total of twenty teams, representing various universities, participated in the tournament.

Achievers Club, Black Elephant reach final

A fine batting by Jashan Bhangu (91) helped BECC defeat Air Force Club, Patiala, by 76 runs. BECC posted 140 runs in 25 overs after electing to bat first. In reply, Air Force team was bundled out after scoring 64 runs in 15.1 overs. The main wicket taker from BECC side was right arm medium pacer Harry 3 for 12 and leggie Arun Bharti 2 for 7.

In another match, Achievers Club defeated Liya Cricket Club Ludhiana by 18 runs and entered the final. Achievers elected to bat first. Aman, captain of the team, played a solid knock of 72 runs and was well supported by Sunpreet Singh who made 22 runs.

Brief Score: Black Elephant Cricket Club: 140 for 6 in 25 overs (Jashan Bhangu 91, Arun Bharti 10, Mustafa 2 for 18, Manohar 2 for 19).

Air Force Cricket Club: 64 all out in 15.1 overs (Manohar 15, Harry 3 for 12 Arun Bharti 2 for 4 and Saurav 2 for 7).

YPS win by 5 wickets

Chandigarh, December 1
The cricket team of Yadvindra Public School (YPS), Mohali, defeated the team of Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA), (affiliated with Punjab Cricket Association), by 5 wickets, during a match of Chandigarh Cricket Association’s cricket cup for boys (U-19), held here today. After winning the toss and elected to bat first, the CCA team posted 196-runs in 45 overs. Amrit Lubana scored 44 off 64 while Akhil contributed 42 off 37. Pardeep Yadav for his 24 off 46 was the other noticeable batsman. For bowling side, Davinder and Abhimanyu claimed 2 wickets each. Chasing the target, the Mohali side scored 197-runs in 29.3 overs. Aadil Bedi wins Albatross tourney

Aadil Bedi, a12-year-old golfer of Vivek High School, won the Albatross International Golf Championship, recently concluded at Jay Pee Greens at Greater Noida, in C category (11 to 13 years). Aadil shot a brilliant 76, 76, 75 (227 points) before defeating Phasin Vichttchareonpaisarn of Thailand by 2 strokes. Adam Arif bin Madzri of Malaysia finished 3rd with a score of 233.

Takafumi Shimoji of Japan and Tristan Galant of South Africa finished fourth and fifth with score of 236 points and 239 points. Earlier, Aadil won the All India Final of theBombay Presidency Golf Club at Mumbai with a score of 71, 71 and 74. He won by a stroke margin of 9 from his rival. He shot 9 birdies.

Dance performances mark cultural fiesta

The annual cultural fiesta of Manav Mangal High School concluded at the auditorium of Manav Mangal Smart School, here today.

The programme began with a powerpoint presentation highlighting the achievements of school students during the academic year 2012-13.

Dance performances, including mixing desi and western beats, by the students of the school made the audiences to tap on their feet.

The students performed ‘Lungi Dance’ with the flavours of the great south icon. They entertained the spectators with ‘Lavni Dance’, which is one of the most important folk dance forms of Maharashtra.

Girls of Class X performed beautifully and graciously in ‘Nayi Soch Naya Savera’, a salute to the spirit of womanhood.

Through a touching and soulful performance, children brought forth the pain and misery of the people who can’t see. In their own way, they gave a message that no action is as generous as taking someone from darkness to light.

Young trained dancers of Manav Mangal mesmerised everyone with their electrifying yet subtle performance of kathak.
