Married to design
Last two months have been very hectic for fashion designer Raakesh Agarwval. From morning till late hours each night, he dabbled with material that was new to him; sketched forms that didn't conform to the human statistics. In the process, he just added to his resume a new profession — that of a wedding designer!
Whatever little time he had to himself, it was during his flights from his base in Delhi to cities in India and even abroad. "In that time also, I introspected as to how to I could have done a better job." He defines designing weddings or anything to do with them as a natural progression for fashion designers. No wonder, a lot of fashion designers are taking up the job, some even have far more years of experience than Raakesh. Veterans of the industry, Tarun Tahiliani and JJ Valaya, have been doing it for years now. It could range from designing wedding sets, weddings cards, bespoke gifts…like Raakesh flew to Austria last month to design the sets and welcome dinner for 400 guests. "Accordingly, I brought chefs from Japan to design the dinner platter," Rakesh informs. For a wedding in Hyderabad, he made a blueprint of wedding cards and even cupcakes that went with the invitation. Between doing collections for spring summer, autumn winter, couture weeks and festive season, he manages to take out time for his novel profession. "Earlier, it took me three months to design a collection but now with softwares that help finalise the sketches of creations in no time, I wind up a collection in fifteen days." There is a lot of time to work on other projects that fall under the designers' ambit. It's the demand for exclusive and exquisite services at the big fat Indian weddings that have set-in the trend of fashion designers lending their aesthetic sense to weddings. Last season, Raghavendra Rathore designed gold and lacquer cards for a client who promised a flexible budget. "By exclusivity, we strictly mean not replicating the product for any other customer," Raghavendra shares. The number of clients is also very limited. "Since it is exclusive, it is really expensive." The bespoke services also include designing drapes or cutlery. "A one off example would be designing seven buttons of the groom's sherwani, which were made of 4-carat diamond each and a diamond studded kalgi." This wedding season marks the debut of many fashion designers in the wedding designing industry. Nikhil of Shantanu-Nikhil designer duo leads the list and they love the experience. "We look at the project as a whole and not in bits and parts, like flower arrangement or the wedding couple's stage or canopies. It is creatively satisfying to design a wedding, wherein everything falls under the domain of art," adds Nikhil. The colour scheme of sarees of women in the family, matched canopies, table layout and flowers, Renu Tandon took a month's time to plan the theme of the 'sangeet' party at her friend's place. "The process begins with passing the sample of each and every element of the design. It's quite similar to the way we make a collection, except that the canvas is bigger." Weddings might be a one-day affair and collection lasts longer, but it is the most important day in an individual's life. "Isn't it a big enough reason to plan meticulously?" she says. It is indeed, especially when we have the reputation of fashion designers preceding their new-found profession! ashima@tribunemail.com

Shining star
Jasmine Singh It is difficult to get the young and stylish singer-actor Balli Riar to talk about anything other than work. And if you successfully manage to break the ice, you would discover a Balli Riar who can laugh at the drop of a hat and is passionate about cricket. Balli shot to fame in Pollywood with the movie Young Malang; the actor, already known for his singing skills, explores the best of both worlds now. If I were not a singer… I would have been a cricketer; I played North India under-19, but due to some injury I had to take a break. I went abroad to pursue my MBA and later started singing followed by acting. A better singer or actor… I love singing and enjoy acting as well. Now, I have started balancing the two well. To collaborate with… I would like to jamm-in with Jay Sean if given a chance. Style file… Nothing can beat the style and comfort of denims and white shirt. I feel if one's fit, everything looks nice. A song that doesn't make sense… I think Kolavari Di; I don't know how people like it so much. What I listen to each day… Laughs. Mere sapon ki raani kab aayegi tu. They are the best… Sonu Nigam, Sukhwinder Singh, Mika and Kuldeep Manak have been my favourite singers. Practice makes a man perfect… My busy schedule does not leave much time for riyaaz, however, whenever I am driving I sing along the song being played. This works for me. Food for music… I avoid fried food; malathi (licorous) and mishri are the two things that I take to keep my voice sweet. Stage fright… I say a small prayer asking god to be by my side when I am performing. |

Remembering a legend
Some people leave the world, but their work and memories continue to inspire the coming generations. Sobha Singh is one luminary who has become the first introduction to art for many artistes in the region. His portraits of Sikh Gurus and painting of Sohni Mahiwal have all been part of our growing up years.
On Friday, his 114th birth anniversary is being celebrated by Sobha Singh Memorial Art Society in Chandigarh at Government Museum and Art Gallery-10 with a slide show and lecture. RM Singh, an artist from the tricity who had the opportunity to live and learn with Sobha Singh at Andretta, Kangra, remembers him as a jovial person and a philosopher at the same time. "Were he born in Europe, his name would have been synonymous with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, such was his work. He refined the Indian miniature paintings and did portraits that were living." Artist Mehar Singh also had a long association with Sobha Singh that runs back to their days in Lahore. He also lived and learnt with him at Andretta. "Sobha Singh was a teacher of the highest level and a saintly man," recollects Mehar Singh. It's not only artists who have carried on with Sobha Singh's rich legacy. Hirday Pal Singh, Sobha Singh's grandson, like the rest of his family, carries on living with the values set by him. "We all enjoy living in unison with nature; all our family is vegetarian and have non-materialistic outlook in life," says Hirday. The family has been inundated with requests to hold functions in his memory not only in Chandigarh and Bhatinda, but also small towns like Jaito and more. Sobha Singh has admirers across the globe. Even in the social media space, his young followers have created pages to share and discuss his works. "Many fade away from public memory soon after their death, but he lives on in the hearts of his admirers," he
adds. mona@tribunemail.com

In the smart league
Nishtha Shukla Anand If you are in love with gadget the way I am, this has been a year of many highs. We have seen arrival of the HTC One, iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s. Just as the number of smartphones in the market has gone up, deciding which one to buy has been equally challenging. Let's take a look at the top five smartphones in the world today. HTC One: One of the best smartphones to have launched this year, HTC One is known for its sturdy construction. It has fine display and good battery life, which makes the phone useful for people on the move. Sony Xperia Z1: This one is most famous for elegant design and classic look. With the Xperia Z1, Sony is also said to have set higher standards in battery life with something called a Stamina Mode. However, this phone is too bulky for its features. Apple iPhone 5: This phone made a lot of waves before it was launched. However, the Apple iPhone 5 didn't match up to the expectations of its fans. It is a light phone with lightening speed performance. However, it has many functional problems. iPhone 5 is also exclusively priced. Soon after the launch of iPhone 5, we saw the release of a new product from Apple's kitty. It was the better priced iPhone 5c, which came in a wide range of colours. But the plastic cover is a little bit of a turn-off for a premium phone. Samsung Galaxy S4: Samsung took the market by storm with this new offering. It clearly took over the iPhone 5 in terms of sales. It became the best selling smartphone globally this year, which includes its wide ranging family-Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S duos and Galaxy Fame. Nokia Lumia 920: If you want a Windows 8 phone, this is the one you should pick. The Windows operating system works well across applications. The Nokia Lumia 920 also has a wonderful HD display and comes with a built in wireless charging. (Anand is a Chandigarh-based technology expert) |

Veggie delight
Manju Dewan In vegetarian fare some people get limited by the ingredients but as more and more people opt for veggies we are also experimenting with the exotic dishes. Try out this chowder and make your table dressy. Sweet Corn and Potato Chowder Method Heat oil and butter in a large pan. Add onions, garlic, potato, celery and green capsicum. When it starts to sizzle, turn the heat down and cover it. Let it cook for 10 minutes. Shake the pan occasionally. Pour the stock/water. Season to taste and boil it. Turn down the heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Add milk, beans, corns and sage. Simmer for 5 minutes. Check the seasoning and serve hot. (As told to Poonam Bindra) Ingredients

Let it sink in
Sukhmani There is a thing or two you should know about kitchen sinks before you explore the fancy options Kitchen sinks can add or spoil the look and beauty of your kitchen, so always choose wisely. With so many options-single bowls to multiple bowls of different sizes, shapes and depths-you need to consider the size of the room and how you'll use the sink. Large multi basin models, which are popular right now, will overpower a small kitchen. Usually a 16X21 inch bowl is suggested in kitchens less than 150 sq ft. Keep the following points in mind before you decide - Mounting style There are four basic mounting styles, top mount gets fixed over the counter. Under mount is fixed underneath the counter top. Apron sinks are similar to under-mount sinks except that their front side is exposed and extends past the cabinets. Integrated or 'flush-mount' sinks are those that form a continuous surface with the countertop. These are most commonly used in conjunction with solid surface countertops, but can also be built into stone or concrete countertops. For 'L' or 'U' shaped kitchens, corner kitchen sinks are best and look fabulous in your kitchen. A wide range of kitchen corner sinks are available in the market. Material matters The type of material you choose will depend chiefly on your aesthetic preferences, decor of the kitchen and budget. The materials discussed below are among the most commonly used in modern kitchen sinks, but there are many more. Glass, granite, marble, and copper are just a few of the more exotic materials being used today. Stainless steel: Stainless steel is the perfect and practical material used for kitchen sinks and complements your kitchen interior. In light coloured kitchens, stainless steel looks brilliant and glossy while in dark coloured kitchens, it looks muted. Stainless steel sinks have made their place in the market due to their low cost and durability. Granite: Granite kitchen sinks are easy to maintain and can tolerate high temperature. The specific qualities of granite such as non-porous and non-absorbent nature make it stain resistant and scratch resistant. They are easy to clean as well as durable. Ceramic: For a traditional style, ceramic sinks are suitable but these are prone to stains. Cast iron: Cast iron is one of the oldest materials used for kitchen sinks and is still very popular today. The cast iron sink has a bright, glossy enamel finish that definitely appeals to many homeowners and lasts for decades. On the downside, these are heavy and the coating can chip. Concrete: Concrete sinks are stylish, often custom-made and heavy. Not everyone has a concrete sink so they offer a distinctive style choice. The downside of this one is that these sinks require periodic sealing. Composite: Composite sinks are made by combining crushed granite or quartz with a resin filler. This combination produces a material that has a lot of the same aesthetic qualities of real granite or quartz without the maintenance and durability issues associated with those types of sinks. Composite sinks are tough and highly resistant to stains and scratching. Tips:

star track
Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone are apparently the new friends in Bollywood. The two actresses, who were recently spotted together at Hello awards, will now appear together in the fourth season of Koffee With Karan.
Our source informs, "Deepika was being very friendly with Priyanka on the show. She was constantly supporting her back, especially when Karan Johar tried to tease her." Last month, Deepika had also praised Priyanka for her item number in her latest film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Let's wait and see what secrets they will spill over Koffee with Karan.
On popular demand
Singer Antara Mitra, who was first seen as a contestant in reality show Indian Idol 2 in 2006, has come a long way. She is now an established singer and sings for Bollywood films. Her latest songs Saree ke fall sa and Kaddu katega in Prabhudeva's film R...Rajkumar are already gaining popularity.| Indian idol
It was a dream come true experience for me. I just wanted to meet Sonu Nigam and that's why I participated. But I had to pass several rounds before I could get a chance to meet him. I never thought of taking up singing professionally since I was a good student. Indian Idol just changed my life. After Indian Idol I came to Mumbai and messaged all artistes including Pritam Da. He was the one who reverted back and asked me to see him. He then offered me a song in Speed. Since then I have sung many songs for him. Work experience
I made my debut with Speed in which I had a duet song with Sonu Nigam. Later I sang for films like All The Best, Golmaal 3, Toh Baat Pakki, Life Partner, Dil Toh Bachha Hai Ji, Rajneeti and now R...Rajkumar. What I love about Dada is the fact that he is a perfectionist. He is focused on what he wants. He also knows how to extract the best from his singers. I am grateful that Pritam Da has given me his best tunes. The two songs from Rajkumar are best example of that. I am happy that people have liked the songs and that they are being played everywhere. Music background
I'm from Kolkata. My childhood was very beautiful and musical. My father was a music teacher and I started singing along with his students without realising at the age of three. My father was my first teacher but then in seventh standard he felt I need professional training. I learnt Hindustani classical music with Shobhana Mukherjee for eight years.

Like father, like son
Aamir Khan gives his 100 per cent to everything he does. Recently the ace actor flew to Australia to learn tap dance and trained over there for a month.
This form of dance is extremely difficult and needs constant practice. So even when he was back, Aamir kept practicing it at home or on sets. His son Azad is two-years-old now and he was often around his dad as mom Kiran was travelling to the North-east. Azad used to keenly observe his dad practice. Aamir who was playing hands on father, also took son on sets. Azad seems to be a quick learner and picked up the steps. He would imitate his dad and the way he moved around. Aamir thoroughly enjoyed the sight when he saw Azad copying him. Seeing his father clapping for him, Azad only got encouraged to keep at it. Kiran had a lovely sight to watch when she was back from her vacation. The father-son duo seemed to bond over dancing in her absence. The spokesperson of Aamir confirms the news and adds, ''Azad has picked the up steps of tap dancing.'' Aamir will be seen tap-dancing in the song Malang of Dhoom 3 which is the most expensive song in Bollywood to date.
Partnership canned
Imtiaz Ali and his wife Preety have parted ways personally and now professionally too. They are no longer co-producing the remake of a South Korean film.
Promotional drive
Sonakshi Sinha is promoting two films at the same which are Bullett Raja and R... Rajkumar. She is having a crazy time but is managing it well. The buzz is that she is giving more time to R..Rajkumar but we do not think it is true.
|
|
Trailer tease
Dhoom 3 will not release any promotional songs as that is their strategy. They will only release 30 second promos of the songs to make audiences curious and draw them to the cinema. Only Dhoom Machale with Katrina has been released as a promotional song.
Special appearance
Kareena Kapoor Khan has a cameo in Saif Ali Khan's Happy Ending and it is a role which is totally different from what she has done before. She will surprise everyone. Saif is very excited about the romantic comedy.
Dress code
Anil Kapoor is impeccably dressed and he has a fetish for collecting designer suits. He has 65 suits at last count and we got to say that he looks great!

Beauty with brains
In an unpredictable industry like Bollywood, where a single hit or flop can make or break your career, Yami Gautam is treading with caution.
When asked if she is concerned about other new actresses doing well in the industry, Yami says, "See there is competition and I am definitely aware of it. It is not like I am completely aloof or something. But if I work under pressure and shape my career according to others that is not me. Every actress comes with her own mindset." She adds, "As far as I am concerned, I am not from the industry. I come from another town and without sounding immodest I would like to say that I am very happy to have reached where I am right now. I am also happy doing the kind of films I am doing right now. The biggest plus for me is to see people appreciating my work whenever I go out." Well said, Yami. You are definitely one beauty with brains.
Gainful start
Shraddha Kapoor won her first award of the season as the Fresh Face of the Year at Hello Magazine awards. Her fortunes turned around with the success of Aashiqui 2.

Undercover operation
Aanchal Khurana played the role of a vamp with aplomb in Zee TV's Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke before she went missing. Now she is back on the show, this time in the role of a village belle, Mithu. Unlike Charu, Mithu will be timid and always in a ghungat. Of course there's loads of mystery behind the entry too.
All hands full
Mihir Mishra who became popular post his show Sanjeevani, has not been a regular on TV shows. Now he is back with a bang not with one but two TV shows. He was seen in Dil Dostii Dance on Channel [V] recently and has now signed up Cinevistaas upcoming thriller Daag on Star Plus too.
Bogged down by work
Hiten Tejwani is unwell and recently was hospitalised. He has been working hard with Pavitra Rishta, Savdhan India and a cameo in Sanskaar and not to forget his film also. Now he's feeling better.
Hope for the best
Anjali Abrol of Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat fame is thinking about the two offers she's got. After doing a small role in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, she is mulling over films and TV offers. She doesn't want to play an ideal bahu yet again and also wants a substantial role in movies.

Destiny takes a turn
Divyanka Tripathi returns to the tube with Ye Hai Mohabbatein. After her big hit Banoo Mein Tumhari Dulhan, Divyanka switched to comedies like Mrs And Mr Sharma Allahabadwale, Chintu Chinki Aur Ek Badi Love Story and Comedy Circus. Now she's glad to be back to the masala genre. Read on.
You are returning to a regular soap after comedies. Is that a conscious career plan? I wanted to do a serious role for a while now. And this character really appealed to me. After doing so many comedies, it was a natural choice tp say yes to it. I am having fun and hope the audiences would love it as well. How is it to work with Ekta Kapoor? This is my first show with Balaji and I am very delighted to work with Ekta. Perhaps it is my destiny that got me here. To work with one of the top production houses in the television industry and the number one channel is an honour. The story is beautiful and everything seems to have fallen into place. Tell us about your role? I play Ishita Iyer who has suffered a failed relationship in the past and how her life changes. She meets her neighbour's 5-year-old daughter, Ruhi and forms a bond with her. Ye Hai Mohabbatein is based on a bestseller novel, Custody. What do you have to say about your role of a South Indian in the show? My role is of a Tamilian Brahmin called Ishita Vishwanathan Iyer. Though I will use few Tamil words here and there but my character won't have an accent as she's born and brought up in Delhi. How did the show's delay affect you? I knew what my role and the show was about. Ups and downs are a part and parcel of the industry. I have full faith in the show, so I wasn't affected.
