Man duped of Rs 4 lakh

Dera Bassi, November 28
A miscreant was booked by the Laru police for duping a person of Rs 4 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. The accused has been identified as Gurdev Singh, a resident of Dharmgarh village.

The complainant, Avtar Singh, a resident of the same village, alleged that the accused has promised him of sending him to Dubai in exchange of Rs 6 lakh. Avtar had allegedly given the accused an amount of Rs 4 lakh. The police have booked the accused under Sections 406, 420 of the IPC and Section 24 of the Immigration Act of 1983. — OC

Ex-mayor’s daughter-in-law’s murder
HC raps SIT for laid-back attitude

About two months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court observed that the probe carried out by the Punjab Police was biased towards Patiala’s former Mayor Jaspal Singh in his daughter-in-law’s alleged murder case, Justice Amol Rattan Singh today virtually censured the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for its dilly-dallying attitude.

As the case came up for resumed hearing, petitioner’s counsel was heard requesting for a CBI probe.The case was adjourned for further arguments till Friday.

The counsel for the petitioner on the previous date of hearing had told the Bench that another cellphone was being used by Jaspal Singh and the SIT had not looked into the calls made from the same. Taking note of the assertion, Justice Amol Rattan had directed the SIT to gather the call details and produce these before the High Court on November 28.

State counsel Anupinder Singh Grewal had earlier submitted that the SIT was conducting the probe in a fair manner. The SIT, headed by Inspector-General of Police (Crime) RPS Brar, is probing the alleged murder of Parampreet Kaur.

Daughter-in-law of the former Patiala mayor, she was found dead on February 23.

On the previous date of hearing, the SIT had submitted its report before the court, saying that Jaspal Singh had joined the investigations on September 19 and 20 and again on November 2. The call details of three cellphones used by Jaspal Singh for the past five months too had been obtained.

Amarjit Singh Sodhi of Patiala had filed a petition in the High Court, seeking a CBI probe into the alleged murder of his daughter Parampreet Kaur.

The case
Parampreet Kaur, daughter-in-law of the former Patiala mayor, Jaspal Singh, was found dead on February 23. Following which, Amarjit Singh Sodhi of Patiala filed a petition in the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the alleged murder of his daughter.

Bank fraud: CBI files chargesheet

A CBI team from New Delhi today filed a chargesheet against two former senior employees of Punjab and Sind Bank and a Chandigarh-based construction firm owner in connection with the Rs 35-crore fraud.

The CBI chargesheeted Tarsem Lal Singla, owner of Akriti constructions and foreign exchange agent, along with the regional manager of the bank, Inderjeet Singh and assistant manager of the bank Gurcharan Singh Batra. CBI special judge Vimal Kumar on Thursday set January 29, 2014, as the next date of hearing. The case was registered by the CBI following a complaint received from the manager of the bank in New Delhi, alleging a fraud of Rs 3.5 crore. As per the CBI official, GM Rathi, regional manager and assistant manager of Punjab and Sind Bank in Sector 47 helped Singla, who dealt in foreign currency exchange and ran Aakriti constructions in Sector 35 in connivance with the regional manager and the assistant manager of Punjab and Sind Bank in Sector 47. The CBI in June 2013 had registered a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Singla and the two bank officials.

Mother, five others booked for injuring handicapped son

A woman and her five accomplices were booked by the Panchkula police for allegedly kidnapping and inflicting injuries on her handicapped son, here.

On the statement of Gurdip Singh, who was dumped in front of the hotel Bella Vista in Sector 5, after being attacked with sharp-edged weapons last night, the police booked his mother, Pal Singh, and four other unidentified accused.

In his complaint, the victim alleged that his mother was forcing him to transfer the property shares in her name. Gurdip Singh alleged that he had been confined in by his mother due to the property dispute for last few months.

“They brought me here yesterday, and then attacked me with sharp-edged weapons,” said Gurdip Singh in his complaint.

A case has been registered against all the six accused under Sections 365, 342, 324, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“The culprits will be nabbed at the earliest after we carry out a thorough investigation in this regard, said a police official.

Thefts on the rise

Neelam Rani of Haryana reported to the police that someone had stolen her purse from the New OPD at the PGI on November 27.

Neelam said the purse contained Rs 20,000 in cash and an ATM card. Sanjeev Pandita of Mani Majra reported that two gas cylinders, one regulator and gold ornaments were stolen from his house on November 26. Sushil Kumar of Sector 46-C said someone had stolen his Mahendra pick-up vehicle (CH23T-7825) from outside his house on November 23.

The police have registered separate cases of theft under Sections 379 and 380 of the IPC.

One held in Gurvinder murder case

Panchkula, November 28
The Panchkula police have claimed to have arrested one of the accused involved in Gurvinder’s murder case, here today.

The accused has been identified as Soni, who was allegedly involved in supply of drugs to the victim.

According to the police, Soni, a resident of Motuwala village in Panchkula, used to procure drugs from another drug peddler, identified as Ajay Rana, from Pilkhani in Ambala.

The police have claimed that they have also arrested Ajay and recovered three grams of heroin from his possession. Ajay has a criminal background and is already involved in two criminal cases at Nawanshahr (Punjab) and another at Saha in Ambala.

“He (Soni) used to supply drugs to the victim,” said o police official, adding that investigations were on to ascertain the exact reason of death of the victim.

Gurwinder was found dumped outside the emergency ward of General Hospital in Sector 6 last week. He was referred to PGI later, where he was declared brought dead.

Six arrested for murder

Mohali: The local police have arrested six persons, including three women, in a murder case here today.

The police got a breakthrough in the case of murder of Nachatttar Singh, who was a resident of Mauli Baidwan village, following an intervention in the case by the Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police, Inder Mohan Singh.

Nachatar Singh had died in General Hospital, after sustaining serious injuries during a scuffle with the six accused, identified as Bhupinder Singh, Jaspal Singh, Harvinder Singh, Harinder Kaur, Mandeep Kaur and Kamaljit Kaur, all residents of the same village. The scuffle took place on November 13. The police had registered a case under Sections 323, 341, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC in this regard. The Mohali SSP had ordered to add Section 302 of the IPC in the FIR, which was not mentioned when the case had been first registered. The case has been registered at Sohana police station.

Theft at houses in P’kula

In two separate cases of thefts at Amravati Enclave, some miscreants decamped with ornaments, cash and other valuable items, accounting to a total amount of Rs 10 lakh.

The incident occurred in Vanika Block, Amravati Enclave, today. The occupants of both the houses were not present at their homes during the time of thefts.

Both the thefts took place in the houses located on the third floor and another on the fourth floor of the same block.

Dyal Chand Naglan, who resides on the third floor of the building, complained that he was away for work, while his wife Sushila Kumari went to meet a neighbour after locking the house when the theft took place.

“On her return, after around half-an-hour, she found the house ransacked. The miscreants had entered the house after breaking the lock of the main door and decamped with gold ornaments, weighing around 250 grams, one kg silver items and cash,” said Dyal Chand, who lives as a tenant in the house.

Sanjay, who resides on the fourth floor in the same block, said his wife Preeti was not at home when thieves struck at their house.

“On Preeti’s return, she found the lock of the house broken and goods scattered all around. We are yet to assess the total loss,” said Sanjay.

A case has been registered in this regard against some unidentified persons at the Pinjore police station.

Investigations were on in this regard and we are doing everything possible to nab the culprits at the earliest, said a police official from the station.

Miscreants stab man, loot Rs 6,000, cell phone

Mohali, November 28
Three car-borne robbers looted a person of Rs 6,000, along with his mobile, after stabbing him during the late hours last night, on the road separating Phase V and Phase VII of Industrial Area, here.

The victim, Sandeep Kumar, received serious injuries in the incident and was rushed to a private hospital by a passerby, who also witnessed the entire loot. According to the eyewitness, he was going back to his home in his car when he noticed the miscreants, who had covered their faces, were stabbing the victim. “When I approached them, they fled away. I, then, rushed the victim to a nearby private hospital,” said the eyewitness, who also jotted down the registration number of the car and gave it to the police. Kumar was going on foot along the road, when he was attacked and looted.

Sandeep’s condition is stated to be serious but stable.

Thieves decamp with Rs 25,000, valuables

Dera Bassi: Some miscreants decamped with cash and other valuables from Lalru Mandi on Wednesday. The incident took place when the house occupants were not present at the home. House owner Raghbeer Juneja said the miscreant stook away cash worth Rs 25,000, some ornaments and other valuables.

Juneja urged the police officials to take strict action against the thefts in the area, which has been taking place in numbers from last few months.A strict action would be initiated against those breaching the law and order, said a police official. — OC

Tribune tennis meet begins from Dec 2

Chandigarh, November 28
The Chandigarh Lawn tennis Association (CLTA) in association with The Tribune Group of Newspapers is all set to host the Tribune Cup Chandigarh Open Tennis Championship from December 2 to 6, here. The championship will feature about 90 top-seeded men and women players from the country. The tournament will be organised at the centre courts of CLTA Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, Chandigarh. Along with the running prize trophy for both men’s and women’s events, the winners will be awarded prize money of Rs 2 lakh.

Rajan Kashyap, patron-in-chief, CLTA, said the tournament is part of the national AITA tennis circuit. Performance in this tournament would earn the players valuable AITA ranking points for national and international events.

The matches will be played on synthetic hard courts and 32 players would vie for honours in each section. Twenty players will be given direct entry on the basis of AITA points. Each section will have eight qualifiers, for which the qualifying matches will to be played on November 30 and December 1. The organising committee has reserved four wild-card entries for deserving players.

Football Meet
AG Haryana, AG J&K enter final

The team of AG Haryana defeated host AG, Punjab, 8-7 (in tie-breaker), to reach the final of North Zone Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IA&AD) Football Tournament, being held at Football Stadium, Sector 17. In the tie breaker, the AG Haryana side got better of their rivals. In the 8th penalty of tie-breaker, Punjab’s Vinay Kanwar failed to convert his penalty kick while Harvinder of AG Haryana managed to post his team’s win.

In the second semifinal of the day, the team of AG Jammu and Kashmir thrashed Delhi Audit 3-0. AG J&K took the lead in 20th minute through Shahnawaz and scored two more goals in 45th and 56th minutes through Umar Alam and Qasir Iqbal, respectively.
