PCA owes Rs 20 cr to police
Mohali, November 24 Several reminders have been sent to the association by the police department but the PCA have failed to pay their dues so far. Interestingly, DGP Sumedh Singh Saini is vice-president of the association. Besides, Punjab senior IAS officer Vishawjit Khanna is also an office bearer of the association. The bills for providing security in and around the stadium during international matches are being raised after every match by the police since 1995, the stadium came in to existence. On the other hand, the PCA management used to reiterate that they had never asked the police to provide security cover during the matches. “The police provide security because maintaining law and order at such high-profile event is their responsibility then why should we pay for it,” this is the statement, which the PCA authorities used to issue every time. Seeing the deadlock, the state government had constituted a committee consisting officials of Mohali police, PCA and others, to resolve the issue but the decision of the committee is yet to come. On being contacted the PCA’s joint secretary GS Walia said they were waiting for the committee’s decision in this regard. “Whatever and whenever the decision of the committee would come, we would abide by it,” said Walia. “But we still maintain that we never asked for the security cover,” added Walia. On the issue, the Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh, who had recently taken over the office, here, said he would check the latest status of the case. “I would check the file of the case only then I would be able to comment on the issue,” said SSP. Notably, the Punjab Police Rules and Instructions issued by Government of India stated that forces deployed for other government organisations may be withdrawn in case of default of payment. In case of security provided to corporate bodies or commercial establishments, the payment should be recovered in advance. The office of the “Commissioner of Income Tax - II, Chandigarh, in its order had already cancelled the PCA’s registration under Section 12-A of the IT Act 1961 by virtue of which it enjoyed a status of a charitable organization, thereby exempting it from all kinds of income tax rebates and mentioned it as a commercial organisation. |
