One killed, 2 hurt in accident

DERA BASSI, NOVEMBER 22
A person was killed and two students were injured in a road accident at Lalru on Thursday evening. The accident occurred when a dog came in the way of the two motorcycles which lead to a collision near Lalru on the service road along the national highway. The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Lalru.

The injured Mogesh Goyal and Jagdish Singh, students of Class XII of Government Senior Secondary School, Lalru, have been admitted in GMCH Sector 32, Chandigarh, for treatment.

The police have registered a case under Section 174 of the IPC. The body of the victim has been handed over to the family after conducting a post-mortem.

National lok adalat to be held today

Mohali, November 22
To ensure the quick disposal of court cases, a national lok adalat will be organised in Mohali, Kharar and Derabassi tomorrow. CJM-cum-secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Mohali, Tarantarn Singh Bindra said at the national lok adalat, criminal compoundable cases, Negotiable Instruments Act under Section 138 cases, MACT cases and accident information report cases would be taken up.

Matrimonial or family court cases, labour disputes, including cases where re-employment with no back wages, and those relating to liquidation where the claims of industrial workers for wages and other benefits were pending, would also be taken up. Land acquisition cases, including those relating to industrial boards, land acquisition for the ONGC, Railways, other centrally sponsored schemes and also land acquisition executions, civil cases, revenue cases, MNREGA, forest cases, disaster compensation, electricity and water bill cases, cases relating to sales tax, income tax and indirect tax (CESTAT) would also be taken up.

Apart from this, civil cases pertaining to rent, bank recovery, debt recovery tribunal cases and pre-litigation cases would also be its part.

Bribery case
Ludhiana ASI held

Mohali, November 22
An ASI was arrested by officials of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on the charges of accepting bribe of Rs 15,000 for presenting documents in the court in connection with a person in jail.

According to the reports, Balbir Singh, who was posted as an ASI in the economic offences wing in Ludhiana, had allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 for presenting the documents relating to Kuldeep Singh, who was in jail for cheating. The matter was later settled at Rs 15,000.

Gurbaksh Singh, a relative of Kuldeep Singh, complained to the vigilance bureau that he was allegedly being harassed by the ASI who was demanding bribe for presenting the required documents in the court. The vigilance bureau officials then laid a trap and the ASI was arrested from Ludhiana.

A case under various Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against the ASI.

Assailants attack family, 3 injured

Mohali, November 22
Three persons, including two women of a family, were injured when some assailants attacked them in Bathlana village last night. According to the reports, the injured persons- Vakil Mohammad, his wife Rajia Begum and aunt, Urmila, were admitted to the Phase VI hospital. They were brought to the hospital by panchayat members Harvinder Singh and Meena Rani.

The condition of Vakil Mohammad is reported to be serious.

He said the attackers broke the gate of his house and entered while his wife was cooking. The family was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons and metal rods. The assailants later fled.

Vakil Mohammad alleged that the police had not taken timely action against the assailants.

GGDSD College clinch wrestling title

The GGDSD College, Chandigarh, has won the Panjab University Inter-College Wrestling (Men) Championship for the session 2013-14, held at the PU gymnasium hall, Chandigarh. The SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, was on second spot with 15.5 points, while Gobindgarh Public College, Alour (Khanna), bagged third spot with 10 points

In 50kg weight Category, Amit Kumar from GGD SD College, Chandigarh, bagged the gold. Yogender and Aditya Kundu of GGD SD College, Chandigarh, secured the first position in 60 and 66 kg weight category, respectively.

In 74kg weight category, Gurpreet Singh, DAV College, Chandigarh, was the winner. Karanveer Sharma of Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, bagged the gold in 84 Kg weight category, while in 96kg weight category, Ankit of GGD SD College, Chandigarh, Gurpreet Singh of Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, won the gold in 120 kg.

U-12 St Kabir CRICKET Trophy
DPS thrash St Anne’s to enter final

Delhi Public School (DPS), Sector 40, and St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, have reached the finals of the U-12 St Kabir Trophy, being played at St Kabir Public School, Sector 26. The first semifinal match was held between host team St Kabir and DPS-40. Batting first, St Kabir could not perform well and was bowled out at 80 runs in 20 overs. Dev and Ujjwal were the highest scorers with 13 runs each. Chirag from the DPS took two wickets for 11 runs.

In reply, DPS team, which at one stage was in trouble at 52 for 7, managed to win the match. Vaibhav played a superb inning of 24 runs off 19 balls to see his team through the victory.

The second semifinal match was however a one-sided affair with Shiva of St Anne’s playing a vital role in the victory of this his team over Millenmium School, Mohali, by 9 wickets.

Batting first, Millenmium School, Mohali, could not perform well as the team was bowled out for 85 runs at the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.

In replay, Shiva of St Anne’s played brilliantly to score 58 runs off 37 balls with 11 fours and one six to give a thumping win to his team.

Women cricket
LIC Club in final

Chandigarh, November 22
LIC Club, Sector 26, entered the final beating Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, by 10 wickets in the semifinals of the ongoing U-19 State Junior Women Cricket Tournament for Kaidarnath Trophy- 2013, at GMSSS-56, Chandigarh. The Women Cricket Association is organising this tournament.

Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, won the toss and decided to bat first. The bowling by LIC Club’s Rajni who scalped five wickets, bowled out the whole team of the Sacred Heart School at 63 run in 19.2 overs. In reply, LIC Club, Sector 26, easily chased the target of 64 runs without losing any wickets in 12.2 overs. Divya scored 26 runs and Rajni 25 runs.. — TNS
