Guess what!
Priyanka Chopra is the new Guess girl. Does it open doors for celebrities from Bollywood to represent more international apparel brands? We find out…
Ashima Batish

Priyanka Chopra's elevation to the new Guess girl, from being an A-list actress in Bollywood, and then a singer of international fame has triggered a lot of possibilities. It might just give a clue to other international labels about signing Indian faces as their brand ambassadors. It might just highlight how to woo Indian clients, who are increasing by the day. Or it might explain that Indian celebrities' exposure to the international markets isn't just limited to the red carpet outings at Cannes.

Not that she is the first Indian celebrity to have become the face of an international label. Shah Rukh Khan took the charge way back in 1999, when he became the first Indian face of Omega before switching over to Tag Hueuer. Then happened the ever-lasting bond between Loreal and Aishwarya Rai, with the addition of Sonam kapoor.

Luxury watches, however, as a commodity, hired maximum Indian celebrities from Aishwarya to Sonali Bendre to Abhishek Bachchan but the newfound relation between Priyanka Chopra and Guess is a development that is novel on many accounts. Mickey Chabbra, director, MAC, says, "It's for the first time that an Indian actress has become the face of an international apparel brand. And who knows it might just be the new beginning, wherein we will see Indian celebs endorse international clothing, footwear and bag labels in the future."

With so many luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Furla, Burberry, Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin present in major cities of India, it makes all the more sense to have Indian faces promoting them at least in our country. But then do other celebs have as strong a resume as Priyanka Chopra? If you look at her career graph that kickstarted by winning an international pageant to where it headed to off late, being an acclaimed singer worldwide, she fits the bill perfectly. Fashion stylist, Pernia Quereshi, opines the same, "Priyanka was made a Guess girl because she is an internationally recognised popstar also; thus the association makes sense." She feels that other popular faces will be roped-in by international labels only if they have a strong presence abroad.

Whenever it will happen next and whoever will get a chance to promote a luxury label, the basic criterion will be global recognition for the personality. Getting to act in Hollywood projects can be the road to landing up with these luxe labels. Nachiket Barve, fashion designer, who also dresses up several Bollywood actors, suggests, "It's important for an actor to enjoy international credibility as a brand promoter. While short-listing a celebrity, the labels do keep in mind if the target clientele knows the personality in question. Acting in Hollywood films, even if it's a small role, can be the introduction." He aptly cites the example of Amitabh Bachchan playing a small but significant role in The Great Gatsby.

Endorsing a brand of the stature of Louis Vuitton, Christain Dior or Armani also comes with a lot of responsibility - it means sporting the label at all the red carpet events, resonating the values and image that are in tandem with the client. Just like Natalie Portman or Charlize Theron, who are celebrated around the world and who in turn celebrate the ethos of Christian Dior.

Struck by love
It's an adventurous move to have three music directors for a single film. At the music launch of Punjabi movie Love Yoou Soniye, producers Karanvir Bohra and his wife Teejay share their take...
Amarjot Kaur

Pollywood is roping in known faces from all over the entertainment industry. This time it is Karanvir Bohra and his wife Teejay along with the Raghu Ram, the man whose identity is synonymous with the television show Roadies. At the music launch of their film Love Yoou Soniye, which has been produced by Karanvir and Teejay, those present included Upasna Singh (the 22-year-old bua of the show Comedy Nights with Kapil), Vindu Dara Singh, Shivendra Mahal, Ishq Bector, Shree D, Harry Anand and the lyricist Kumaar?

"I was certain that one fine day I will definitely make a movie. I am married to one of the most popular actors of Indian television, Karanvir, so the idea just hit off," says Teejay. When asked about the choice of having three music directors for the film, Teejay replies, "When you have one music director, the entire album starts sounding monotonous. We wanted to have variety and give a chance to all our friends, who have been in the music scene for so long, to be a part of this movie."

Hip hop

Ishq Bector, who has given his music to as many as four songs in the film in collaboration with Shree D, says, "When Karan and Teejay approached me, I made them listen to almost every song that I had in my bank. We finally zeroed-in on the song called—O Moti, which I had written for my mother and then it all just kept falling into place." He adds, "We also have a sad song in the film called Labda Firan, so there's a good variety of songs." In a rush to board his flight, Ishq leaves us with just two lines, "I would like to give music to the Punjabi film industry and am presently busy with a song called Atyachaari, which will be featured in the film Shaadi Kay Side Effects that has Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan."

Look wise

"I am a hot sardar," says Raghu Ram as he talks about his role without making it sound like an unabashed pompous display of narcissism. He backs his statement with another comment, "I did send a photo of me dressed up like a sardar to Ranvijay's family, who are all sardars and they did compliment my look, saying that with that look I could possibly woo many women in Punjab."

Apart from his new look, Raghu has one more reason to be happy — his book that is titled Raghu-Rearview, my Roadies Journey. "I always wanted to write a book and this has a series of confessions, even the ones that some of my closest friends are unaware of," he says. Of embarking on the journey of Roadies 11, he smiles as he admits, "I really didn't want to be a part of this one, but now that I am you shall get to see more of me. I did refrain from using a lot of abuses this time," he says.

STAR TRACK
Pre-booking for Dhoom 3 is on

Dhoom 3 created a huge buzz among the audiences post the launch of the trailer in the IMAX format. The impact of the trailer has been so huge, that the news doing the rounds is that multiplexes have started pre-booking tickets for the Aamir Khan starrer film.

It is for the first time in the history of Indian cinema that multiplex chains started accepting pre-bookings immediately after the launch of the trailer, almost two months before the release of the film. Usually, multiplexes start pre-bookings one week prior to the release of the film. The film is slated to release on December.

Another "first-timer" for Dhoom 3 is that it will be releasing in the IMAX format. Hollywood films like Spiderman and Batman are released in this format so far.

What's very interesting is that a particular multiplex was under pressure from the audiences. The demand was already so high that they had to start pre- bookings.

When contacted the spokesperson of the film, they confirmed the news. "Yes, the impact of the trailer was big and there was a huge demand from the audiences, due to which pre-bookings began."

Kay Kay Menon unplugged

Kay Kay Menon is media-shy and is selective about the movies he does. He talks about movies, sports and more. He may not be seen in action that much but he is a very busy man.

Thriller next

I am very excited about my next film by writer-director Manish Gupta. This film is based on a sensational murder case and has been woven well like a classic Agatha Christie novel.

Small screen

When I was roped in by Anurag Kashyap for the television series, I was elated. My association with Anurag goes back to 15 years and it's good to be working with him again. I did a film with him earlier which didn't see the light of the day. But, now being a part of his television series is something I am really looking forward to. The project is special because I will also be working with Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Romantic roles

I am looking forward to doing a romantic comedy; I enjoyed being a part of Bheja Fry thoroughly. I have just finished shooting for Anurag's film and am busy with Vishal Bharadwaj's next film.

My favourites

I respect Naseer Bhai and Irrfan. I think they are a class apart as actors. I have no favourites when it comes to filmmakers, though Anurag Kashyap and I share a special rapport.

Leisure time

I am a lawn tennis addict. I play it regularly and just cannot do without a match. I also workout and like spending quality time with my wife Nivedita. I am not into socialising because I believe in focusing on my work which in my case is acting.

Dream come true

Newbie actor Alisa Kkhan, who made her debut with film My Husband's Wife, is all set to star in Vikram Bhatt's upcoming film Aaina opposite Emraan Hashmi. Talking about her experience, Alisa Kkhan says, "It was a dream come true to work with Emraan Hashmi. It is great to be called his new lady."

Even though she is just a film old, Alisa has her plans in place as she reveals that she is not interested in being anybody's side kick and only wants to do lead roles. "I don't want to do any supporting roles. I am sexy, cute, young, new face of 2013 and I know that I have all that it takes to be Bollywood's leading lady," adds Alisa.

Film world set to go silent?

The Western India Motion Picture and Television Sound Engineers Association has issued a non-cooperation directive to its members, asking them to stop work from December 8. If the threat is carried out, it will render several films and television programmes speechless, literally.

A letter sent out by the Association complains that its members are not granted leave nor paid a conveyance fees despite working on odd hours. The letter goes onto state that delayed release of payment and instances of sound professionals being sacked when they ask for wages, is the cause of their decision to launch the no cooperation initiative.

The letter states that the Association has decided to stall all "audio-visual programmes indoor, outdoor, studio, post production, film and serial shooting, ad films, song and music recording, editing, mixing, dubbing from December 8."

Producer Bhushan Kumar added, "I have two films, Bhootnath 2 and Umesh Shukla's untitled venture, on floors. The Film Producers' Guild is talking to the sound professionals and I am optimistic that we will find a solution."

Director Farah Khan who is currently shooting Happy New Year, added, "Everybody stands to lose money so the issue needs to be sorted out with both parties sitting down for a talk."

B N Tiwari, President of the Sound Association, however insisted that they will stop work on December 8. "We have been fighting for our rights for long; our wages haven't been increased in years. It's time to make ourselves heard," he said.

Congratulations & celebrations

Bollywood couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan celebrated their daughter Aaradhya's second birthday recently. The theme of the birthday party was fairytale. Therefore, everything from invites to decor to dresses seemed something out of a fairy tale book. Their residence was decorated with lights, balloons and flowers and apparently looked like a fairy tale castle.

Even the cake and snacks followed the same theme. The invites were sent with a bucket full of colourful candies. Some of the celebrity guests were Hrithik Roshan with his kids Hrehaan and Hridhaan, Kajol with her kids Nysa and Yug Devgn, Kiran Rao with her son Azad Khan, Shilpa Shetty with her son Viaan and others.

Hirani can’t say no

Raj Kumar Hirani is known to be extremely good at everything he does. However, people who are close to the director know for a fact that there is one thing he is not good at. He struggles to say NO. He hates turning down requests or actually saying no to anyone who has approached him for anything.

He can't say a point blank no, even to his far off acquaintances or people he has met once. In fact, even if the director has work in abundance he still goes out of his way to accommodate and do what is asked of him. Raj kumar Hirani spokesperson says, "Raju Sir rarely says no. He tries and accommodates as many people as possible."

One story, many versions

Filmmaker Anand Gandhi is going to upload the raw footage of his critically acclaimed film Ship Of Theseus for anybody to edit. In a unique move, he has decided to upload his film, along with over six hours of raw footage online. Film-enthusiasts can download the film and edit it to create their own versions. They can even twist the tale. Gandhi is curious to see different versions of the same film.

Traditional take

Veteran actress Dimple Kapadia, who recently launched the trailer of What The Fish, is going to promote the film dressed just as her character in the movie. Dimple has worn very peculiar sarees in the film. She has even hired a stylist to source authentic traditional saris for the duration of the promotion.

On forced holiday

Actress Neha Dhupia is currently enjoying her time in Goa. She is recuperating from a leg injury and has been advised not to wear heels. She was spotted wearing a bikini and sun bathing. We like!

True buddies
Amarjot Kaur

Pogo and Buddy are two interesting members of Bubbu Tir's family, and her fondness for them is expressed as she speaks about them and of how over these few years, they have become a very important part of her life. "Pogo and Buddy are my babies and are perhaps even more disciplined and affectionate than the ones who I gave birth to," she begins. While Buddy is a three-year-old golden retriever, Pogo is a pug. "Buddy is almost like a human when it comes to his mannerisms and the most interesting thing about him is that he understands all commands in Punjabi. When we want to conceal some information from him, we talk to him in English," she laughs.

As she talks about Buddy, Bubbu is reminded of an incident, "This one time, we were getting our house renovated and a lot of stuff was lying out in the open. It was only when a neighbour's maid raised an alarm that Buddy realised that we had an intruder-a thief, who started running away as soon as Buddy came. And our little boy Buddy was throwing things at him as if to say-look, you left this behind too, take it along," she shares.

Love me, love my dog

"The thing about Buddy and Pogo is that they insist on sitting on the chair each time I go and visit my friends. And what makes it worse for the two of them is that they are both in love with the same girl-a golden labrador, Rumi," says she while adding that they would look their best to woo Rumi and would not refrain from going for a walk just to catch a glimpse of Rumi. "I remember when my elder daughter got married, both Buddy and Pogo didn't eat for two days. They are very attached with all the members of the house. They do not enter the room where my grandchild is and are very protective of her too," she adds. Like all younger ones, Pogo is subdued in front of the elder one, who looks imposing because of his gigantic size.

"Pogo is aristocratic and opinionated. Each time my husband retires to reading a newspaper, Pogo has to accompany him in the reads and he can look at the newspaper for hours. Also, he has a habit of escorting everyone who walks in and out of house," she smiles while admitting that the only time that the two fight is when they are having a meal as they always compare each other's platter, otherwise they are quite friendly with each other.

Yours faithfully

Bubbu believes that dogs are natural givers. She says, "My elder daughter used to take Pogo and Buddy out for a drive. And they too are spoilt, but I'd much rather be with them. When my elder daughter had gone to Warwick (UK) for her studies, we would chat with her on Skype and just when the two would hear her voice, they would come rushing to the room." Now that's the kind of bond that's hard to find, but didn't we tell you Bubbu's wise words-dogs are natural givers and indeed the most unconditional when it comes to loving!

Man-made malady
Satish Narula

Environment is the concern for all. Yes, it should be. For this, one and all are advised to plant trees and stress is also laid on not damaging or cutting them. Administrative restrictions are imposed on even pruning the trees. Good enough, in a way, but the use of such instructions have to be judicious. There is need to consult horticulturists and the restrictions should be selective.

The main concern is the unrestricted damage being caused to the city greens by nomads or colony dwellers. Some do it for personal use while others do it for monetary reasons, cut limbs and then auction these in colonies. Most of the time during the winter one can see such people carrying bunches of brutally cut wood. The modus operandi is that they leave their lady folks and children on city roads or parks in the morning with long rods with specially designed hooks. The entire day they keep breaking twigs and even limbs with 'weapons' and then collect these at a specified place. In the evening the men folks return back and carry the heaps on rickshaw, rehris, cycles etc. Do we know the kind of damage that is being done to the trees? Will this issue ever be raised and addressed?

The damage thus caused to trees is irreparable. The damaged limbs are exposed to all kind of fungi and insects that find the cut ends most suitable for hiding and breeding. The attack of insects of Indarbela spp. is more pronounced when the cuts are made indiscriminately and irregularly. The insects enter the tree from these irregular cuts and damage not only the interior conduction channels but also make the branches and limbs hollow from within. They also eat up the outside bark and damage the conduction channels that conduct the food material manufactured in leaves to other plant parts. The limbs thus weakened are prone to snapping when the wind velocity becomes a little more than normal. And you wondered why there is so much falling of trees and limbs after a rain or storm? The malady is man made! If only we could stop the 'criminals' involved in such activities, we could save the trees for a long life.

Stopping the cutting of trees is very good. But pruning at a particular time of the year is essential, especially in some of the fruit trees or those where they need correction for imbalances caused due to one or the other factors. (To be concluded)

Doc Talk
Hand picked
Hand lift is the recent trend in beauty treatment
Dr Vikas Sharma

First there was the facelift, buttock lift and breast lift. Now, there is the hand lift. With age and environmental exposure, hands tend to lose volume, fat and elasticity. The fatty layer of the hand disappears, so the skin becomes translucent, wrinkled and shriveled, and you see underlying structures like bones, tendons and veins. The hands tend to darken and become rough, thus leading to the appearance of aged hands.

The old saying, "If you want to know a person's age, look at her/his hands," is still operational. With people achieving a youthful appearance from facial rejuvenation treatments, a discrepancy between a youthful face and aged hands often becomes visible. But now, there are new and increasingly popular hand rejuvenation procedures that can restore youth and beauty to the hands.

So, following the trend in facial anti-ageing procedures, people are now increasingly seeking hand rejuvenation treatments. Hand rejuvenation uses several techniques to resolve the issues of atrophy, skin wrinkling and discolouration of the aging hand. These procedures can fill in the contour, decrease wrinkling, prominent veins, and normalise the pigmentary changes.

Hand rejuvenation is a good option if you feel your hands could benefit from:

nLess prominent veins and tendons.

nLess wrinkling of the skin and more volume.

nImproved skin tone and colour.

A hand lift can be accomplished by injecting fillers under the first layer of skin to plump it.

Fillers will require multiple injections throughout the hand to fill in areas with deficient volume. Another option is fat injection (fat transfer or autologous fat grafting). For fat transfer, a patient's own fat is harvested from a donor site elsewhere in the body and injected into the back of the hand. Temporary fillers usually last from six months to one year. Fat transfer and skin resections are usually stable from five to seven years. Injections may be repeated when necessary.

Other hand rejuvenation options

The other approaches to creating a youthful look for your hands include:

Chemical peels, IPL and laser skin resurfacing may be used for fine wrinkles, skin discoloration, sun damage or age spots. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) or skin lightening creams can also help pigmentation or brown spots on the skin.

Sclerotherapy or a laser vein treatment may be used to treat noticeable or protruding veins.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting unsightly spider veins with a solution that causes the vein to collapse.

The Q-switched laser is the other technique which fires very rapid pulses and blasts away pigment spots.

Results of hand rejuvenation

After the swelling or redness from the hand rejuvenation procedures have resolved, one will notice more youthful looking hands. The appearance of the skin appears filled-out and smooth, with little or no brown spots or veins.

It is important to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to take precautions like wearing a sunscreen and moisturising the skin regularly to extend the life of the hand rejuvenation results.

Results of skin tightening will depend on the type of treatment used. Patients with a history of impaired healing, such as diabetes, ongoing sun exposure, smoking, on immunosuppressive therapy or on anticoagulants will see both a lower initial result and a less lasting result.

The best mentor

Sakshi Tanwar, who is currently seen in Sony Entertainment Television's Bade Achche Lagte Hain as Priya Kapoor, is known to be the new mentor in the life of her onscreen daughters. Recently, the show has taken a seven-year leap and the viewers have been introduced to a set of young, fresh faces.

Sakshi's onscreen daughters Pihu (Sonai), Pari (Vinti Idnani) and Myrah (Pragati) shared some intense scenes with her. But not many know that Sakshi was the one who helped them to get all those right. A little birdie from the sets told us that Sakshi is being the best mother off screen as well. It is known that when Pihu or Pari have problems in delivering their lines, they go to Sakshi for help, who not only gives them guidance but also at times enacts a few scenes to make them understand. The young daughters take Sakshi as their mentor, who supports them in their trouble times.

Buddy effect

Manav Gohil is one chilled out actor; no wonder his career has been on the upswing. After the success of The Buddy Project, Manav got TV show Khelti Hai Zindagi Aankh Micholi. However, he is still great buddies with producer of The Buddy Project Sudhir Sharma.

He says, "It's been a super association. It's always been absolutely comfortable and a party-like atmosphere to be working with Sudhir Sharma. He is so creative and always involved in every activity on the sets."

Producer Sudhir Sharma also showered praises on Manav. He says, "Manav was my personal, first choice for the role of Jaitley. He's a fantastic person and actor. Him being seen after a long time has actually worked for our show, as his character is one that is not often seen - unique yet relatable. We all have had mentors like this teacher who made a difference to our lives." — HRM

Sing & dance

No Sooraj Barjatya story is ever complete without its grandeur and celebrations. Even though the festive season came to an end, Star Plus' show Pyar Ka Dard Hain Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara continued the merriment as one of the most lavish wedding of the season prepares to unfold. Aditya and Pankhuri got married for the second time in the show and this time with elaborate ceremonies, amidst song, dance and more in true Rajshri style.

Disha Parmarm, who plays Pankhuri, talks about her on-screen marriage saying, "I have grown up watching Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath Saath Hain and the moment I signed up with Pyaar Ka Dard all I could dream of was the grand functions, beautiful costumes, and songs. I am happy my dream finally came true." Producer Sooraj Barjatya adds, "The show managed to touch million hearts and when Adi and Pankhuri came together as a married couple the story did not permit us to give the audience a grand Rajshri style wedding.

So we have decided to make this wedding a grand and memorable one with lots of festivities and celebrations." What many might not know is that the sangeet was had 11 songs being recorded and for the first time all 34 characters from the cast shared screen space together.

Fighting on!

Apparently, Candy Brar got Vivek Mishra thrown out of a party at Goa's Sunburn festival. Candy had gone into the Bigg Boss 7 house to confront Vivek, who was disappointed as he was eliminated before her entry. She wanted to question him over his announcement of another contestant Kushal Tandon and Candy's relationship. Looks like she hasn't let it go!

Separate ways

Sunil Grover is reiterating that he will not return to Comedy Nights With Kapil, but the irony is that Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover will soon be sharing the stage. They will perform at an event in Muscat, but not together. Their acts will be separate.

Seeking inspiration

The promos of Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma's new show Rang Rasiya, which will soon on air on Colors, are out. Shot in Bikaner and Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, it has been garnering a lot of attention. Now buzz is that the plot of the show is inspired by Shakespeare's Othello. Army man Rudra (Ashish Sharma) does not believe in love and Parvati (Sanaya Irani) does; when they come together they share a passionate and aggressive love story.

Back on show

After her TV show Dekha Ek Khwaab, actress Priyal Gor wasn't seen much on television. However, recently she was spotted on MTV's show Webbed. Now news is that production house Endemol India's has approached her for an upcoming fiction show on Star Plus. The show will be called Hospital; she will play lead if things work out between her and the producers.

A new innings

Shakti Arora, aka Onir in Pavitra Rishta, will have a new role. He will be seen in Ek Veer Ki Ardaas-Veera after the 15-year leap, which will air soon. He will play Veera's (played by Digangana Suryavanshi) love interest Karan. Apparently, later Veera's brother Ranvi will create trouble between them.

Punar Vivah to go off air

Buzz is that Punar Vivah will go off air on November 29. The new show, Doli Armaanon Ki, will replace it. A source says, "The makers tried their best, but the channel has decided to discontinue the show." The new show will air from December 2 and it has Neha Marda, Mohit Malik and Siddharth Arora in lead roles.
