28-yr-old woman commits suicide

Kalka, November 20
A 28-year-old woman committed suicide today. The body of Rakhi Devi was recovered from Kalka- Ambala rail track.

The police got information around 8:30am that a body was run over by a train; following which the police rushed to the spot. The body was handed over to the parents of the deceased after conducting a post-mortem at the Kalka CHC.

A source said the deceased was in depression as her 7-year-old daughter died on November 12.

The police have found a suicide note from her possession, which stated that she herself was responsible for her suicide. — OC

Two acquitted in separate rape cases

The UT District Courts witnessed acquittals in two separate cases of rape today. While a doctor was acquitted of the charges of rape of a medical student, another person was acquitted of charges of raping a city-based model. Both the cases were decided in the court of District and Sessions Judge, SK Aggarwal.

In the first case, the court acquitted a Yamunanagar-based doctor, Dr Vageesh Gutian, who was arrested on accusations of raping a medical student on pretext of marriage. The victim had turned hostile in the case. The accused, Dr Vageesh, was posted as a medical officer at the Primary Health Centre, Buria, Yamunanagar.

The UT police had arrested Vageesh, on complaint of a medical student who accused Vageesh, of sexually exploiting her for three years on pretext of marriage. The victim had claimed to have known accused since 2007. The victim, in her complaint to the police, had alleged that the accused in March 2011 raped her at her residence and since then had been exploiting her by showing obscene video clips and photos of the victim. The police had registered the case on July 9, 2013.

In a separate case, the court acquitted a Sangrur resident, Gagandeep Singh, on charges of raping a model.

2 absolved of murder charge

Chandigarh, November 20
A local court today acquitted two persons on the charges of murder after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. The murder occurred in June this year and the police had stated that a scuffle over drugs was the reason behind the crime.

The court acquitted Raju and Rajesh of the charges of murder under Section 302 of the IPC.

In June this year, th epolice had recovered the body of a 45-year-old Anoop Chauhan in Sector 25 and arrested Raju and Rajesh, two Maloya residents on the charges of murder. — TNS

Man held for molesting woman

Chandigarh, November 20
A 25-year-old woman, working at a dispensary, alleged that a person made attempts to molest her after she refused his proposal.

The woman had been working at a private hospital in Mohali, where the accused Dilbagh Singh was also working. The woman had recently got a job at a dispensary in Khuda Lahora. Today she came to the dispensary and after some time Dilbagh also reached there in a drunken condition. He started passing comments and made attempts to outrage her modesty. The girl then informed the police following which Dilbag Singh, a resident of Muktsar, was arrested. The police have registered a case of outraging modesty of woman and criminal intimidation at Sector 11 police station. — TNS

Theft reported

Chandigarh, November 20
A theft of a bag containing Rs 2 lakh and jewellery was reported today.

Jaspreet Singh Gill, a resident of Phase 3B2, Mohali, reported that someone had stolen the purse of his wife containing Rs 2 lakh, jewellery and mobile phone in Sector 34, on November 18. — TNS

Skeleton found

Panchkula, November 20
A skeleton was found in jungles of Morni late last night.

According to police officials, the skeleton is that of a 33-year-old man identified as Ravinder.

A part of the skeleton was reportedly eaten up by animals. The skeleton was found hanging with a rope from a tree. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.

Ravinder had reportedly gone missing from his house two months back. — TNS

Special kids to represent nation

Sixteen special kids from Chandigarh are set to represent India in the upcoming Asia Pacific Regional Games for special children in Australia starting from November 28.

Many of them have speech-hearing problem. But each one of them is unique in their performance.

Their confidence speaks volume of their grit and dedication. For instance Hardik and Harsimran recently bagged gold medals in Table Tennis in the National championship of the Special Olympics.

Excited about his visit to Australia, 16-years-old Hardik said he would definitely perform well and win the medal for the country.

20-years-old Harsimran intervened and promised another gold medal for the country.

Among the contingent, while most of them will play at the international level for the first time, three players of them have already participated in international events for special children in past. Manpreet Singh participated in world Summer Games in Athens and bagged bronze medal in athletics in 2011. Akashdeep bagged a gold medal in skating at World Summer Games in 2007. Prabhjot Singh participated in badminton at World Summer Games in 2003.

All participants raised their hands when asked who would win medals for the country. Most of them were also excited to visit the country and meet the people there.

Table Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Bocce are some of the games in which the local students will participate. A teacher at SOREM, Sector 36, Kiran Kaushal said all the students were practicing hard for last many days. It is definitely a proud moment for all of them that they will travel abroad and compete with the players of other countries.

More than 20 countries are participating in this tournament, she said.

Anil Sharma, Director Special Olympics Bharat (Chandigarh Chapter) said that 16 students were selected out of two preparatory camps held in Chennai and Hyderabad.

He informed that around 400 students from the entire country will participate and it is a matter of proud that 16 students would be from this city alone.

“These students are usually neglected by the society in general. The international exposure like this definitely gives them a sense of confidence and feeling of oneness in the society,” he said. The event is taking place at New Castle, Australia from November 28 till December 8. We hope to return with lot of medals, he added.

SOREM emerge victorious

The Society for Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged (SOREM), Sector 36, emerged winner of the state level annual sports meet, concluded here at Sports Complex, Sector 7.

Organised by Special Olympic committee (Chandigarh Chapter), 250 special students participated in the annual meet, which had athletics as a major sports event.

The student of SOREM bagged 45 gold, 39 silver and 41 bronze medals. Asha School, Chandi Mandir, stood second with 25 gold, 26 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, was on third spot with 20 gold, 28 silver and 26 bronze medals.

In 50-metre walk, Siran Gupta bagged the gold in 8-11 age category, Shivani bagged gold in 12-21 age category, Mamta Garg bagged gold in 22-29 age category

In 50 meter run, Trinabh Dutt bagged gold in 8-11 age category.

In 200 m walk, Manu Sharma bagged gold in 16-22 age group category, Jasmine Kaur bagged gold in 22-32 age group and Aashish Vaid bagged gold in 16-21 age group.

In 100 metre run, Tanisha Sharma bagged gold in 8-11 age category, Komal Rana bagged gold in 12-15 age group category, Jasmeet Kaur bagged gold in 16-21 age group category and Priya Gupta bagged gold in 16-29 age category.

Sadhana institute stood fourth with 13 gold medals, 12 silvers and 11 bronze and Safe Hand Society won one gold, four silver and 2 bronze.

In other matches of 46-49 kg weight category, Vijay Kumar, DAV College, Chandigarh, beat Bhushan from AS College, Khanna. Shubham, Government College, Muktsar, defeated Pawan Kumar of Government College, Hoshiarpur

Western Air drub Eastern Air Command in hockey

Chandigarh, November 20
Western Air Command (WAC) team thrashed Eastern Air Command (EAC) 6-0, on the second day of the Air Force Hockey Championship, being conducted at 3BRD Hockey Astro turf at Base Repair Depot, Air Force.

Part of pool A league match, WAC played superb and dominated the loosing side through out the match.

Total of three matches were played today.

In the pool B league match, Central Air Command (CAC) defeated the Southern Air Command (SAC) team 6-1.

Another pool B league match between Training Command (TC) and Southern Western Air Command (SWAC) ended up in draw. Both the teams scored 3 goals each.

There will be two matches tomorrow. First match will be EAC Vs AIR HQ at 8 am. Second match MC Vs WAC will start at 10 am. A total of eight command teams from Air Force are participating in this Championship. There will be 18 matches. All the matches will be played on league-cum-knock out basis. Top two teams from each pool will qualify for semifinal. Final match will be played on 26 November.

Pool A has Maintenance Command (MC), Eastern Air Command (EAC), Western Air Command (WAC) & Air Headquarters (Air HQ) and Pool B has Training Command (TC), Southern Air Command (SAC), Southern Western Air Command (SWAC) & Central Air Command (CAC).

IS Dev Samaj School, Sector -21 beat GMHS-41 by 81 runs in the ongoing under-19 Kaidarnath Trophy for women here at the cricket ground of GMSSS-56. Chandigarh Women Cricket Association is organising this State Level Junior Women Cricket Tournament.

In today’s match, IS Dev Samaj School won the toss and while batting first, the team began well and in 20 overs, piled up 126 for 6 on board. Poonam scored 34 runs, Muskan 28 runs and Shivangi 12 runs.

In reply, GMHS-41 was bundled at 45 runs in 15.2 overs due to its bad batting performance. Harpreet scored 12 runs, Anmol 14 runs and Dalvir 10 runs.

Poonam from the winning side took 4 wickets, Pushpa 3 wickets, Saloni 2 wickets and Priyanka 1 wicket.

Tomorrow's Match will be played between LIC Club, Sector 26 and Anchal International School, Sector-41.

Women's cricket assn invites entries

Chandigarh, November 20
The Chandigarh Women's Cricket Association is organising a Sub-Junior State Cricket Women Tournament (under-16) for Kalaish Behl Trophy from November 26 at IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, Chandigarh, to promote cricket among women in Chandigarh. The players born after 1-1-1998 can participate in this tournament.

All the teams can send their entries for the tournament to Gobind and Deepak Sood latest by November 24. There is no entry fee for this tournament. — TNS

Tiny-tots competed in the tricycle, getting ready for school, vegetable race, sack race and other events.The winners included Armaan, Gurjot, Samarth, Gurnoor, Yash and Gautam. Alka Mahajan, Principal, gave away the prizes.
