5 arrested for illegal mining

Banur, November 10
The police has arrested five persons on the charges of illegal mining. The police seized sand loaded trucks near Banur on Sunday. Sand was loaded from Ghaggar river illegally.

The accused are booked under Section 379 of the IPC. The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh of Khabra, Randheer Singh of Majri, Jaspreet Singh of Sulkhian, Gurnam Singh of Durakotian, all belonging to district Ropar and Gurmeetpal of Banur. Notably, despite ban the illegal sand mining is continued.

Security guard murdered

Dera Bassi, November 10
A security guard employed at Indian bank, Dera Bassi, was murdered last night. He was attacked with knifes and iron rods.

The police has registered a case against unidentified accused under Section 302 and 34 of the IPC and started the investigation. The victim has been identified as Alamkhan hailing from Bihar and presently living at Dera Bassi. SHO Gurvant Singh said the police was working on different theories and accused would be in the police net soon. He said according to the footage of CCTV cameras two accused had come to the bank and attacked the bank guard who was sleeping. Later, the victim was attacked in the nearby street.

According to information, victim was doing his duty in place of permanent guard Kuldeep who was on leave. The intention of both the accused to loot the bank not witnessed from the footage of CCTV cameras. The purpose behind the murder was yet to be identified. — OC

Sufi musical evening today

The HTCPA in collaboration with the Harpal Tiwana Foundation will hold a special Sufi evening to mark the 2nd Anniversary of the Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts tomorrow.

According to Manpal Tiwana, foundation spokesman, Sufiana Kalam by emerging star of Sufi Kanwar Grewal will be held tomorrow starting from 6.30 pm in the evening.

One held with psychotropic drugs

Mohali, November 10
The police today arrested Gurwinder Singh on a charge of selling psychotropic drugs. It recovered 125 capsules from his possession. A car with a blue beacon atop was also impounded.

The accused hails from Tarn Taran. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 81 of the NDPS Act and Section 420 of the IPC has been registered at Kurali police station. The accused will be produced in a local court tomorrow. — TNS

Man held with poppy husk

Mohali, November 10
The police arrested a drug peddler and recovered 60 kg of poppy husk from his possession today.

The accused, Varinderpa was nabbed from Jabbomajra village. The accused was presented in a local court which sent him to a two-day remand. — TNS

SGGS-26 win football meet

Chandigarh, November 10
Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGS), Sector 26, defeated Principal Accountant General (Audit) Haryana (AG Haryana) in the final of Institutional League Football Championship, held at the football stadium, Sector 17, here today.

In the title clash match, the SGGS team beat their rivals 4-0. It was the AG Haryana side that initiated the attack through right striker Harminder Singh but shot went over the goal post. Releasing some pressure, the SGGS team built their attack through Rajan Negi, who forwarded a cake-pass to right half Saurav before the latter attempted a powerful shot but failed in his attempt. Continuing their attack, the winning team scored the lead through left striker Rajan, who marginally defeated veteran custodian of the AG Haryana, in the 24th minute. After penetrating the defense, the team continued their attacking game and doubled the lead again through Rajan. He smartly posted the ball in the 43rd minute to double the lead. Right before the lemon break, right stopper Nikhil Prashar increased their margin in the 46th minute with a powerful shot. Completely controlling the game, striker Rajan sealed the match after scoring his third and team’s fourth goal in the 67th minute.

City shooter strikes gold

Chandigarh, November 10
Local shooter Harjot Singh won laurels by winning a gold medal in the 25-metre event during the 23rd All India GV Mavalankar Shooting championship, concluded in West Bengal today. Harjot won the top spot scoring 265 points in the 25-metre junior men's individual event. Harjot is a registered shooter with the Chandigarh Shooting Association and pursuing his studies from a local school. Earlier, he has also bagged laurels in the Punjab Shooting Championship, concluded few months back.

In the same competition, Armyman Devendra Singh made a record in the free pistol event, while Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and BSF earned gold medals in their respective groups. The championship is being conducted by Asansol Rifle Club, an affiliate of West Bengal Rifle Association. — TNS

DSP Ashish wins All-India Police Tennis Tournament

Chandigarh Police DSP Ashish Kapoor continued his winning streak and claimed the title of open singles during the concluding day of 14th All-India Police Lawn Tennis Championship, held at CLTA courts, Sector 10, here today. In the finals of the event, Ashish overpowered his opponent Dr. Kanjom at 9-0, in straight sets. The team of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) defeated BSF (Border Security Force) by 2-0 to win the team title. In open doubles event, pair of Ashish Kapoor and SM Sharma thumped down the pair of Vikran Dev Singh and Dr GS Nag at 9-4.

Jagannath Pahadia, Governor of Haryana, distributed th2e prizes among the winners of the tournament. The concluding ceremony witnessed a performance of cultural Music programme with Haryana Folk Dance and Punjabi Giddha -Bhangra.

Results: Open single, Final - Ashish Kapoor beat Dr. Kanjom 9-0; Open doubles - Final- Ashish Kapoor and SM Sharma beat Vikram Dev Singh and GS Nag Score 9-4; Veteran single (joint winners) - SM Sharma and Randeep Dutta; Veteran doubles - SM Sharma and BNS Reddy beat SA Razak and E Ashok Kumar, Score 9-6.

PGGCG-11, SGGS-26 win titles

The fencers of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, won the title of Panjab University Inter-College Fencing Championship for Women while the men’s fencing team of SGGS College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter -College Fencing Championship for Men, for the sixth time, concluded at the Gymnasium Hall of Panjab University.

In the women’s category, the team of GGDSD College, Sector 32, attained the second spot whereas host side of Panjab University, Chandigarh, ended their campaign by attaining third spot. Government College, Muktsar, managed to attain fourth position in the tournament.

In the men’s category, the SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, finished runners-up in team event while Panjab University and GGDSD College, Sector 32, attained third and fourth spot, respectively.

Local lad eyes Youth Olympics

Local equestrian prodigy Zoravar Singh Thiara is all set to compete at Youth Olympics 2014, to be held in China next year. After a good show at FEI World Show Jumping Challenge, conducted at the Army Riding and Polo Club, Delhi from October 28 to 31, Zoravar is ready to perform at an international event.

In FEI challenge- qualifier for the Youth Olympics 2014 - Zoravar has competed in the highest category in Category-A, comprised of jumps of 1.20 meter and a course with a high level of difficulty. He was the youngest rider competing in his category and his performance over the 4 rounds was boosted by combination of riding skills, mental strength and natural talent.

While talking to media, Zoravar mentioned that he is looking forward for the Youth Olympics 2014. “In Youth Olympics the best 4 riders from Asia will be going as a team. The selection will be tough and the results will be out by the end of the year, hopefully I will manage to achieve the top spot,” said he. About his future plans, he added “I would start my training in Germany soon, following National level Horse Shows in India and as well as in International shows in Europe. I am also targeting the Asian Games of 2018 and the Olympics of 2020,” he added.

Zoravar is riding from the age of 3-years and competing since he was 6 years old. He also bagged the Best Child Rider Award twice at the Delhi Horse Show and also won the FEI World Dressage Challenge.

GNPS-36, Satluj Stunners enter final

The cricket team of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, will face the Satluj Stunners in the finals of 2nd Satluj Premier League cricket tournament for boys (U-15), here. In the semi-finals played at Satluj Pubic School, both the teams defeated their respective rivals. Guru Nanak Public School beat St. Soldier’s School, Sector 28, by 4-wickets while the Satluj Stunners defeated their counterpart Satluj Blue in super over.

In the second semi-final, the Satluj Blue side went down against Satluj Stunners. The latter while batting first, scored 170-runs for 6 wickets, in the allotted slot of 30 overs. Sharavan Sharma scored a quick fire 48 off 39 while Rajat Singh added 35-runs off 36 balls. For bowling side, Abhishek (2 for 15) and Akash (2 for 20) remain the main wicket takers.

Max Hospital beat Kudos Chemie

The cricket team of Max hospital XI defeated Kudos Chemie in a match of ongoing 4th AG corporate T-20 cricket tournament, being held here today.

After electing to bat first, the winning side posted a total of 134-runs losing 7-wickets. The team’s innings was studded with a 61-run contribution by Manu Sharma.

For bowling side, Sumit took 3 wickets for 16. In their reply, the Kudos XI could manage to score only 121-runs.

Khushi Ram (40-runs) and Rajiv (20-runs) remain the main contributors for the team. For bowling team, Naresh and Karan claimed 2-wickets each.
