Warming up!
Winter is knocking at our doors. And the trends this season range right from plaid pants and skirts to animal prints and cashmere sweaters in all the darker hues…
Manpriya Singh

We’ve seen it all from the front row, we’ve been backstage too. Any leftover misgivings, the glossies stepped in to dispel. Winter fashion has never been an easy give-away and like always comprises more of classics than the season’s current craze. Here’s bringing you the most wearable stories from the trend-hunting exercise.

Those who are sick of the kaleidoscopic prints from the spring can happily ring in tartans and plaids, coupled with the all preppy look. “Houndstooth is one of my favourites and will be quite in this season. I’ve always liked the fabric and ordered an outfit for myself. A sweater dress coupled with red lips should complete your look,” Sonam Kapoor shared with us while in Chandigarh for the launch of a store. Alongside, there’s a thumbs-up to darker hues like navy blue coupled with dull dark maroon top.

Apart from clear thumbs-up to plaid, elsewhere the fall-winter looks come inspired from some of the classics. Don’t put away the animal prints yet. Burberry Prorsum’s collection for the season titled Trench Kisses, sounded more than self-explanatory and comprised neat pencil skirts, animal prints and cashmere sweaters. The classic picture fitted well with the reinterpretation philosophy of the season.

Opines Geet Sethi, consultant, Aditya Birla Retail Excellence, “This time expect to see a revival of the very American homemaker look with calf-length skirts and boots. The checks will definitely make their presence felt but this time they make their way to the bottom. So there will be lots of plaid pants and plaid skirts.” Like we said, tartans are the toast of the season. Chanel’s fall-winter 2013/2014 ready to wear collection was a play of lightness and darkness. Dark, thick tweeds glistened against the backdrop of long lean silhouettes.

From the snooty labels to affordable fashion, the affair with monochromes continues with Zara coming up with dark and sober colours in its fall-winter collection. Karl Lagerfield is said to have summed up his show, “It’s about the globalisation of fashion. I wanted a global look, not a French look. I wanted a very monochrome silhouette — dark but not sad — a touch of shine, a touch of pink.”

Indian touch

The gone by summer didn’t really leave a mark and the neons wouldn’t probably spill onto sweaters, save for those to whom winter means weddings. Shares Neeta Lulla, “This time expect to see a lot of brides in neons. A lot of neons will continue to be used in the wedding lehangas and bridal trousseaus. So they are not out, as of yet.”

Just in case you wanted to meet a common ground, look global with a touch of colour, Rohhit Verma has a way out. “Soft colours blended with a touch of bright colours are very in for pullovers,” shares the Delhi-based designer. He further hints at geometric prints, knitted tees and fitted denims.”

The one classic that gets hands-on revival is the plaid. The fall-winter collections by Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Micheal Kors, Vivenne Westwood never gave the good old plaids, which have been around since 1500 BC, a miss.

VJ and anchor Cyrus Sahukar is a special talent. He talks about veejaying, his current show Sab Khelo Sab Jeeto, movies & much more…
Manpriya Singh

Only he could have pulled off a stint like Semi Girebaal and turned it into a benchmark for spoofs; the one that even years down the line is not hard to recall. Belonging to the class of VJs when speaking to the camera was cool, is no mean feat either.

Cyrus Sahukar, lately, perhaps has been overlooking his accomplishments like a passerby or taking a breather or even extending his challenges. Whatever the reasons, it’s been a while since we spotted him on television. “I have been busy travelling; just set up a company with Rhea Kapoor, which deals with digital content. The first show is with YouTube. I have also been writing and creating content in a way that I can start thinking of not having to be in every show.” There’s a mention of live gigs and a couple of other experimental stints as well.

Show time

There is no denying the fact of long lost culture of veejaying; the times when the hosts on music television enjoyed similar status as silver screen stars. “The culture of veejaying is honestly dead because there are no VJs…television has also changed and moreover, at the time, there were only six VJs running the entire network,” he draws no parallel and moves onto talking about his current show Sab Khelo Sab Jeeto.

“The show involves six families who come from various walks of life and play all the old school games. The show is a breather in so many ways — from today’s life, from the reality shows et al. Each game is ninety seconds and each day there are ample prizes to be won.” What made him sign onto the dotted line is, “I have really enjoyed the format.”

Big screen

Coming up is a film titled Words with God with Mira Nair, “in which Vinay Pathak and me play architects. It’s a dark comedy.” While yet another titled Million Dollar Arm, which also stars Jon Hamm, will see him playing himself as the host of the show Million Dollar Arm. From among anchoring, acting and writing, his true love lies in ‘kayaking’.

Bichade abhi toh hum…
World-renowned singer Reshma is no more, what she has left behind in legacy is a voice that symbolises love and longing. People from Chandigarh recollect some fond moments with her…
Jasmine Singh

Her voice tore through the thick barricades that separated India and Pakistan; it would bring down the angels, pull the strings of your heart and hit right where you felt 'heavenly peace'. Her song Lambi judaai will forever remain the symbol of love and longing. Singer Reshma died of throat cancer of November 2 leaving the desert marooned, which will now wait for her beautiful spirit to appear whenever someone remembers her melodies.

People from the region, who had the chance to meet Reshma in person, remember her as a soul untouched by fame and money.

Kewal Singh Dhillon, MLA, Barnala, and his wife Manjit Dhillon had a chance to invite the 'nightingale of the desert' Reshma to their place more than once. Both ardent fans walk down the memory lane and recollect some beautiful moments, "Last time when she came to perform at our place, Reshma was accompanied by her daughter. What we know of Reshma is that she did not have any formal training in singing, nevertheless she had a voice that would mesmerise one and all."

Kewal Dhillon calls the Pakistani folk singer the most unassuming woman, who did not have airs about anything. "She was like a cultural ambassador who would spread the message of love and friendship wherever she went. We will feel the void that she has left behind," adds Kewal Dhillon. As for Manjit Dhillon, Reshma was the most pleasant and wonderful human that she had ever met. "I would request her to sing Lambi Judaai, a song that would freeze time in the moment."

It was in Subash Ghai's Bollywood film Hero that most people who hadn't known her, heard Reshma's voice for the first time in the song Lambi Judaai. Dama dam mast kalandar, Hai o rabba nahion lagda dil mera, Sun charkhe di mithi mithi hook mahiya meinu yaad aunda, Wey main chori chori and Ankhiyan no rehen de ankhyan de kol kol are some of Reshma's hit songs. Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, who had met Reshma when she was hospitalised, gets emotional. "She was a beautiful woman — charming face, a long neck; like some Heer was sitting." Hans Raj feels Reshma epitomises the beauty of longing; of separation in love.

Professor Rajpal Singh visited Reshma in her new house in Lahore in the year 2000. "She boasted that she had moved into a pucca house. She stayed with a huge extended family; Reshma was like a kid with her children and grandchildren." Professor Rajpal remembers her sipping some kind of medicine after every 2-3 minutes during her performance in Ropar. "I didn't know she was suffering with some kind of throat infection. A loss, a huge one," he sinks into silence. Shares GS Chani, chairperson Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy, “I had a chance to interact with Reshma when Balwant Gargi was making a movie. Reshma was like a fakir, not bothered about money or fame.”

Par Excellence
Role of the club face
Jesse Grewal

It was considered that the starting direction of the ball was influenced by the path of the club or swing plane while the curvature of the shot or side spin was influenced by the club face position at impact in relation to the path. So if a swing was from out-to-in with a club face open to the path the ball would start to the left (for right-handed golfers) and then curve to the right, which would be termed as a 'pull slice'.

Data provided by the Trackman has given us a lot more detail on the ball flight. Firstly, the Trackman has shown that there is nothing called side-spin. The ball has only one spin and that is back spin. Due to the position of the club face at impact the axis of the ball tilts to one side when the face is not square causing the ball to curve to that side. Therefore, if the club face is open at impact the axis of the ball will tilt to the right causing the ball to curve in that direction.

Secondly, the starting direction of the ball is influenced by the club face position at impact more than the path of the swing. The club face position at impact has a 95 per cent influence on the starting direction of the ball with a 'Driver', approximately 90 per cent in putting and the short game and around 75 per cent with the irons. Earlier it was thought that the faster the club travels the less time the ball spends on the club face and therefore on shots hit with the driver, the swing plane or path of the club had a greater influence.

The data provided by Trackman helps explain misses on both sides while hitting with a driver. If the face is slightly open the ball will start to the right and as the axis of the ball will also tilt to the right, the ball will curve to the right too. Higher lofted clubs do not tilt the axis of the ball as much therefore with the 'irons' the influence of the club face on direction is a little less.

For years top teaching professionals have found their preferred teaching styles regarding the shape of the swing. They also came to a conclusion that to change a swing plane took approximately 10,000 swings. So if a golfer hit a100 balls per day it would take them approximately 100 days to change the swing plane, which in effect is the shape of the swing. This also shows that if we miss the target on both sides it could only be from differing club face positions at impact and not from different swing planes. This is why there have been great golfers with slightly in-to-out swings and out-to-in swings, but with perfectly repeatable club face position at impact. The hallmark of great golfers is that they know where their hands have to be at impact.

Drop-outs
Premature drop in fruit plants could be due to weather conditions, insects or hormonal imbalance
Satish Narula

Nothing could hurt a gardener more than seeing the fruit of his labour lost due to one reason or the other. In home gardens, the gardener is equally disturbed when he loses fruits, vegetables or even flowers.

There are many reasons; some are beyond control while others are controllable if timely action is taken.

Premature drop in fruit plants could be due to unfavourable weather conditions, insects, pests or diseases, nutritional deficiencies or wrong cultural practices like unnecessary application of fertilizers or nutritional sprays.

There could also be physiological reasons like disturbance in hormonal balance. It is very important to identify the underlying cause and then give any treatment.

One thing is sure that a plant bears only the load of fruit that is feasible or that it can take. Rest of the fruit is shed naturally. Only a fraction of flowers set fruit. Imagine this, the mango panicles bear thousands of flowers and if all the fruit is set, will it be possible for the tree to take the load? You must have noticed that only a few fruits are set per panicle. This is true with all the fruit trees and this kind of premature fruit drop is called natural fruit drop. This may continue almost all through the development of fruits on the trees.

Insects are one of the major causes that lead to the fruit drop. Starting with the appearance of flowers to the fruit maturity different species cause damage due to their assault. The insects are, almost, crop specific and lot of research has been done to check their damage. Package of practices are available with Punjab Agriculture University for fruits, vegetables and different ornamental plants. The insects are intervened at a particular stage of their appearance and life-cycle when it is most effective to control them. It is, therefore, important to understand this aspect and not to spray chemicals indiscriminately. The literature is very easy to understand and has been written for the layman under different crop heads.

Plant nutrition plays a very important role on plant bearing. Any deficiency or excess of nutrients may cause premature fruit drop or damage even to the fruit skin or quality. The nutritional deficiency of any element may tell upon the plant health, fruit bearing and fruit quality. Similarly, any excess application may cause damage to tree or

premature fruit fall. The gardeners could make use of leaf charts, also available at PAU to see for themselves the deficiency from which the tree suffered. The application of fertilizers should also be at proper time and the quantity of application should depend upon the age of the tree. All such information is available in the package of practices as mentioned above.

the ‘in’ side
Invite the sun
Sukhmani

A sunroom is a structure usually constructed onto the side of a house which allows enjoyment of the surrounding landscape while being sheltered from adverse weather conditions such as rain and wind. Some sunrooms are designed for scenic view, while others are designed to collect sunlight for warmth and light. These are usually called solariums. If you are renovating your house, adding a sun room to enjoy the approaching winter seems like a good idea.

While the general rule of thumb is to follow the light, it's important to take into account the area in which you live and what you will be using the sunroom for when deciding the location. Sunrooms take the idea of 'bringing the outdoors in' and flip it. These rooms are full of windows and you feel more like you're bringing the indoors out. They give you the opportunity to enjoy all the natural sunshine and views of the outdoors without actually having to be outside, which means you can enjoy the space all year round regardless of the weather conditions. These rooms benefit from natural lighting, so you can focus your decorating energies on the perfect furniture, room layout, and accent pieces. Choose from formal looks to laid-back to whimsical.

The sunroom is as much a part of the home as any other room and should be decorated accordingly. It should also flow comfortably from whatever room it's connected to.

* Paint the room in cheerful colours. Whites and yellows are common but don't be afraid to branch out a bit. Turquoise, greens and pinks are great if used correctly.

* Arrange the furniture in the same way you would in an indoor room. Establish a focal point (most likely a window), create conversation areas, and leave enough room for traffic flow.

* Sun rooms are places of leisure, thus the furniture must be comfortable and relaxing. Popular materials include wicker, rattan, and other natural items. You can also use traditional outdoor furniture made of iron or teak. Use items that coordinate with and compliment the style of the home. Just remember to use fabrics that won't fade in the sun.

* The idea of a sun room is to maximize the natural light and make it feel as much like the outdoors as possible. That said, sometimes privacy is desired and window coverings are necessary. Bamboo blinds and shutters are great options. If using curtains use light materials and make sure they can be tied back.

* Do not clutter up the room and let the view be the main focus of the room.

Weight watch
Fat chance!
Belly fat is the most difficult thing to get rid of
Renupreet Kaur

Abdominal fat or belly fat, also known as visceral fat, is considered the most harmful form of fat in your body. This type of fat has been linked with everything from insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease to an increased risk for certain cancers.

Seven main reasons for belly fat:

Sedentary lifestyle: It is the first cause of belly fat, a lifestyle in which a person fails to exercise regularly.

Overeating: It is another well-founded cause of developing belly fat. Eating too much can lead to gain weight that can further manifest itself in the expansion of your waist.

Genetics: Genetics as the cause of belly fat may be the toughest one to tackle, because it entails not really being able to do all that much to prevent it. Either you are apple-shaped or pear-shaped. If you are pear-shaped, then the fat generally accumulates in your lower areas. If you are apple-shaped, then your body has the tendency of storing fat around your midsection, thus leading to belly fat.

Lack of sleep: It can cause changes in hormones that increase your appetite. You may also crave for foods high in calories and carbohydrates to give you lost energy, which can contribute to weight gain.

Pregnancy: It may contribute to the development of obesity if corrective measures are not taken post delivery.

Medical causes: Arthritis can lead to decrease in activity which usually results in weight gain. Other medical problems like thyroid, hypertension, liver diseases, certain kinds of cancers can also result into weight increase.

Stress: It can raise the level of cortisol in the body, which is responsible for excess

Fat storage.

The key to loose belly fat is to eat healthy and stay healthy. You can apply the following nutrition rules:

* Eat more protein. Protein has a higher thermic effect than other foods. Your body burns more energy processing proteins than it does processing carbs and fat.

* Fish oil is the best source of fat to lose your belly fat. Fish oil naturally increases testosterone levels and increases fat loss. 6g omega-3 per day is a good start. Check Carlson Fish Oil: 1600mg omega-3 per tbsp.

* Limit alcohol consumption. To lose your belly fat, what you drink is as important as what you eat. Forget about losing your belly fat if you drink beer and eat sweets daily.

Anupam turns Shakuni

We recently reported about veteran actor Anupam Kher lending his voice to the character of Shakuni mama for Jayanti Lal Gada's animated film Mahabharat.

Now we have managed to get a picture of his character in the animated film. All the characters in the movie have been designed to match the personality of Bollywood names doing the voice-over so that there is co-ordination between what the audience will see and hear.

Shakuni is believed to be an extremely intelligent but devious man. He is perhaps best known for masterminding the infamous game of dice and hence Anupam Kher kept roaming with dice for a month before he started dubbing to get used to it. A master of sorcery, it is said the dice used by Shakuni's were made from his father's thigh bones and hence generated any desired number. The spokesperson says, "Anupam requested the makers of the movie to use the original sound of the dice generated during the dubbing of his character and not to create a sound mix of the same."

Riding away to glory

Shooting of Salman Khan's upcoming film Jai Ho, which was originally titled Mental has faced disruptions due to several reasons and even got stalled in-between. However, it seems everything is in place now and Jai Ho is free from any further hassles.aRecently, Salman Khan was pictured shooting for his upcoming film Jai Ho. The actor was spotted riding a bike for a fight sequence in the film. Later, he was also seen driving a scooty on the sets, perhaps to enjoy the ride. Sohail Khan, who is the director of the film, was busy taking the shots. Interestingly, Sridevi's daughter Jhanvi Kapoor was also spotted on the sets. The film was being shot outside Boney Kapoor's house. So, when Boney's daughter got to know that Salman is shooting in her vicinity, she at once made it a point to meet him. It seems Sridevi's daughter is preparing well to enter Bollywood. Don't be surprised if someday she is seen in Salman's film!

Eyes on elite club

At the auditions of the latest season of Dance India Dance, 17-year-old Rishab, a deaf and mute boy from Patna floored the judges with his extraordinary moves and flawless finish despite many challenges. Blessed with a sunny disposition and a never-say-die spirit, Rishab used to work at a hotel where he met his dance teacher, who showed him “slow motion” moves inspired by Raghav of Dance India Dance Season 3. The teacher was thrilled with the way he grasped the concept of dancing to counts despite never having heard a beat! The young boy and his teacher landed up at the Baroda auditions where he performed on Itni si hasi from Barfi. He got a standing ovation from all the judges. Unable to hold himself back after seeing him, Mudassar went up to the stage and hugged Rishab. Shruti too got emotional and drew a heart on a paper to let him know that she loves him. She said “I have never in my life ever seen anybody dance like you. You are God’s child. You are blessed!” Rishab asked her to join him for a dance which Shruti instantly agreed. Romancing the greens

Actor Delnaaz Irani, who we are currently seeing as bubbly Delshaad in the show Jee Le Zara, has developed a fascination for gardening of late.

She says, "My mother stays in a Parsi colony and she has a small garden in her house, where she grows several plants. Seeing her, I also started doing that and I have a few plants in my balcony too."

Delnaz is very fond of lemon grass, so she has a plant of that. She shares, "I use lemon grass in my tea and when I pluck that from my own plant you get an extra satisfaction." Irani also has curry leaves plant, and few flowers too. "I have a gardener who takes care of all the plants. Every time I look at my plants, its a nice feeling seeing the greenery in my home," she adds.

Up, close and personal

Remember Prachee Pathak, who essayed different roles in Afsar Bitiya, Mann ki Awaaz... Pratigya and Kairee? Fifteen years of experience in theatre, the pass-out from National School of Drama is excited to play Naulakha Devi, a powerful character of a mother-in-law. The actor, who is known to be quite choosy about her roles, immediately took it on the role of Naulakha Devi in Sahara One TV's widely acclaimed show Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai. Prachee talks about the show and career.

Tell us about your role in the show, Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai?

I essay the role of Naulakha Devi, a strict and a dominating woman, who is ritualistic to the core. She is very conservative, especially when it comes to her daughter-in-laws.

Are you playing the same character of stereotypical saas, who was seen the earlier TV shows?

First of all, I tell you that the way mother-in-laws are portrayed on TV is wrong. In this show, it is not a negative character. It is not like the saas doing wrong to her bahu all the time. She is good to her bahu as well.

How was your experience while working with the first-time producer, Bharat Srivastava?

It is a great experience since I am an amateur as far as shooting for a saas-bahu saga show. Producer Bharat Srivastava is a different person. He made me very comfortable on the sets. Entire technical team and my co-stars are very good and great fun to work with despite the hectic schedule.

What, according to you, did the viewers like and dislike about the show?

The unanimous opinion is that it is a very good show and it captures the actual relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. It is the first real saas-bahu drama show and is quite a brave attempt.

You have acted in a number of dramas in theatre as well. How was your transition from theatre to small screen?

I had done theatre for fifteen years. In between, I went to Mumbai. The transition from theatre to small screen was a much needed and indeed a smooth one.

You have acted in films also. Are you still doing films?

Yes, I have done Ready with Salman Khan and Aarakshan which was directed by Prakash Jha. I believe in quality not quantity. So I am also very picky about the films also.
