The word pineapple was
originally used to describe the cone-shaped reproductive organs of
various pine trees. These cones are woody and not edible at all.
When
European explorers came across this fruit in America in 17th century,
they also gave it the name "pineapple" as the fruits
resembled the pine cones.
This name became more popular than the
original name of ananas for pineapple and continued in English
language.
