Fast, felicity...festivity
Bonds of love need no authentication. But when it comes to Karwa Chauth, the fast becomes a feast in moments of togetherness…
Mona

Here comes Karwa Chauth when women fast for the long life of their husbands. Traditions, like everything else, have undergone a change. We take a closer look.

Being together
Karanvir Bohra & Teejay Sandhu

Actor Teejay Sandhu picked up the tradition once she moved to India from Canada. Her husband Karanvir Bohra also fasts with his lovely wife.

Why fast?

It's the fun and festive spirit that I love. I am not that traditional to believe that my husband will live longer or behave well, but I love the whole celebration part of it.

The high

The mutual camaraderie that women enjoy makes me go for this fast. It would be no fun doing it alone. Also, Karanvir keeping the fast with me makes it extra special.

The low

I am not too happy with the number of rules that come with the fast. If you have an elderly woman around, almost everything is banned…I like to keep it my way.

Memory lane

My first Karwa Chauth; I was dating Karanvir then. I knew little about the tradition, I fasted during the day, saw the moon from my terrace at night and asked Karanvir on what next…he said, "Touch my feet, I'll kiss you and then we will have dinner." So it was sweet and simple.

Bonds of love

Ritu Kochhar, founder director INIFD, has been keeping the fast for the last fourteen years, all out of personal choice for her husband Lt Col Sumit Kochhar, who joins her as and when he can.

Why fast?

It was a way of life while growing up — seen my mother and grandmother keeping the fast. When I got married my mother-in law left it entirely to me. I wanted to keep the fast for it is tradition; I am also a bit superstitious about it.

The high

My husband keeps the fast with me and we love dining out on that night. There have been days when we have been out on adventure and picked up Thumbs Up instead of water!

The low

I don't want to sound negative, but I don't like it that little rituals have been replaced with overtly materialistic things like playing cards and stuff.

Memory lane

It was the first Karwa Chauth after my wedding. My husband was on duty in Operation Vijay. The moon was out, everyone was eating, making merry. However, sitting in a corner I was sulking…waiting for his call. He did call and said, 'I am looking at the moon from here, you too look at it now and open your fast.' I loved that. This year too, he's busy in rescue operations at Gopalpur where cyclone Phailin struck. I will again be waiting for his call!

Traditional ties
Dinesh Sood & Monica Sood

Monica Sood, entrepreneur known for her cakes, took on to the tradition. While she loved the elaborate rituals with her mother-in-law Satya Sood, now that she's no more, her daughter Gayatri has stepped up to give her company.

The high

It's the food at the end of the day — Ghar ke dal chawal. Food after staying hungry the whole day is bliss.

The low

I wish all men kept the fast with their wives. I wonder why everything challenging comes to women.

Memory lane

I had the best times with my mother-in-law. We were very good friends. It was only on Karwa Chauth that I would touch her feet; seemed so filmy and both of us would burst out laughing.

"Chodo, jhappi pao," she would say and we were back to our normal mother-daughter stuff.

Sweet love
Ayushmann Khurana & Tahira Kashyap

Tahira Kashyap, author and theatre enthusiast keeps the fast for she feels it's the only day she can do something special for her hubby. It's generally her husband Ayushmann Khurana who pampers her through the year.

Why fast?

Ayush spoils me the whole year and it's my turn to do something special for him. And, it's a tradition in his family that I am only too happy to follow.

The high

Although I keep it for Ayush, it turns out to be my day by the end of it. I am treated in a special manner the whole day. He makes it a point to fly down home wherever he is, even if it is for a couple of hours at night. That's sweet indeed.

The low

I don't like it the way some people project the fast as a torture for women. Otherwise, these very people will go for low-cal diets and not eat, but for this special day the same thing is not done.

Memory lane

It was my fast the year I was engaged to Ayush. I was programming head at a radio station in Jalandhar and he was working in Mumbai. He came by plane; I drove all alone to Chandigarh after winding up my work quickly. We made it in time. As mother didn't keep the fast I had no clue whatsoever, so when asked to offer water to the moon I threw it the way you water plants! It was funny but sweet.

Ajay Bhatia’s Straight Line, Open Spaces, a photography exhibition, explores the architecture of Chandigarh

Never mind the fact that Straight Line, Open Spaces at Alliance Francaise is Ajay Bhatia's second photography exhibition, he has a personalised expression of articulating his thoughts as he sieves them through his lens. Look around the gallery and you are treated to a rather unusual aspect of Chandigarh's architecture and while you stand baffled about the exquisite aptness that defines each photograph, you are acquainted with Ajay Bhatia, who has been patiently waiting to catch you at the right moment.

"I have been in Chandigarh for more than 30 years now and when I came here in 1979 to study commerce, I ended up spending those three years in the Central State Library, Leisure Valley and Sector 17. While at that time I took these places for granted, I see exactly the reason why I should click Chandigarh's architecture," Begins Ajay as he explains his reason to choose Chandigarh as his subject of photography.

Straight Lines and Open Spaces is his personal take on the city's design. "If you look at the architecture of Chandigarh, you will see, either straight lines or open spaces. While the straight lines refer to the commercial and residential places, the open spaces include gardens and lake. What adds to the city's aesthetics is the beauty with which these straight lines co-exist with the open spaces," he shares.

The contents of Ajay's frames are some exquisite views of Sukhna Lake, Garden at Sector 4, Natural trail, Leisure Valley, IT Park road, High Court complex, Alliance Francaise, The Government Museum and the exteriors of Vidhan Sabha and Central Secretariat. "I have employed techniques to define the character of each photograph and the one in which I have captured Carburiser's typical style of making the ceilings, I have used Ansel Adem's zone system, which represents the darkest shade and progresses to the exposed area. It's like going towards the light from the dark. Also, I have used fish lens to take some pictures."

While stating his influence, which he credits to art cinema, he says, "I think every photographer is heavily influenced by cinema. If you fancy mainstream cinema, you will click mainstream photos, and I am the sorts who takes to Satyajit Ray, Francois Truffaut, Akira Kurosawa and Ingmar Bergman," he smiles.

Alignment-difference between the Driver and Irons
Jesse Grewal

Jesse Grewal The use of technology is changing some of the old views relating to the golf swing. One of the most advanced tools being used today by leading professionals is the Trackman. The Trackman is able to track the real ball flight and not assume the distance by a calculation of launch, spin and speed which most other gadgets do.

The Trackman also gives a lot of data regarding impact from the club face position, path and angle of approach and lots more. The using of the angle of approach in understanding the starting direction is a new approach.

The golf club travels in an arc and therefore in an ideal swing the club head should be square when the club reaches the bottom of the arc. So, if the club catches the ball before it reaches the bottom of the arc the club face would be open. Similarly if the ball is caught on the upswing the club face would have closed by this time. Therefore in an iron shot when a player hits down on the ball (steep) the club face would not have squared up and the ball would start to the right (for right handed golfers). While using a Driver we hit the ball on the upswing which would make the ball start left as the club face would have shut by then.

Keeping the above in mind we would require a different way of aligning with an iron and a driver in a relatively perfect golf swing. For an iron the golfer would stand open or aligned left as the ball would go to the right if the angle of approach is steep. With the driver they would have to stand closed or aligned to the right to compensate for the ball going left due to the club face being closed. This contradicts some of the old views of never-standing in a 'closed' position or aligning to the right.

This could change if the plane is either in to out or out to in. The combination of the plane and the angle of approach would be given in next week's article.

Doc Talk
No pain, all gain
Dr Simran Deo

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder......or is it? Now you can appear beautiful no matter who the onlooker. With a vast range of treatments from the invasive to the non-invasive, cosmetic dermatologists now offer the latest technology to turn back the years with ease. Starting with a bespoke consultation each treatment is tailor-made to your exact requirement, and ensures both skin perfection and rejuvenation.

The latest treatment available is the state of the art dual technology with radiofrequency and ultrasound which ensures significant inch loss by permanent death of 70 per cent of the localised fat cells. There is also stimulation of collagen production ensuring toning and tightening of the overlying skin, delaying the use of botox and achieving results which cosmetic surgery and exercise are unable to achieve. The end result is facial rejuvenation and a beautiful contoured body. This non-invasive treatment requires no local anesthesia and is likened to having a hot massage. It is described as a lunchtime makeover as it has virtually no downtime, with instantaneous results and better still ... No side effects!

There are currently a variety of machines available on the market, namely; Thermage, Ulthera, Pelleve and Exilis all with good results and minimum downtime. There are no significant side effects, however minimal redness over the site. Intermittent nausea is also experienced over the following few days, indicating the breakdown of fat cells and subsequent release of toxins. The treatment lasts 30-60 minutes and 4 treatments are recommended for optimum results.

In order to aid the elimination of fat cells and to achieve optimum results, it is advised that large quantities of warm water be drunk on the day of and on those days following the procedure. Although seen as a relatively "quick fix", a good diet and regular exercise are always advocated, again aiding in the achievement of the best possible results.

Finding the lost fruit
Satish Narula

Any memory associated with the childhood makes one nostalgic. It is for this reason that when one sees any such thing somewhere, one is tempted to record it. But one feels why it has to be a fruit? Why these were lost? Why do we have to call it a lost treasure? Why such fruits were easily available then and not now?

One thing I admire about Delhi. It is the only place where I find most of those long- lost fruits when the season comes. Most fruits are available in old Delhi, sold exactly the way I saw 50 years back. Be it the jamun, phalsa, mulberry, khirni, katha ber or bael. The accompanying picture is of carambola taken near Chawri Bazar metro station. Abhrak is the name by which we knew this fruit. It was an essential part of fruit chat or a roasted shakarkandi (sweet potato). A rich source of vitamin C, it was borne on medium-sized trees, even on the main trunk. A strongly sour-sweet fruit, even the mere mention of it brings a burst of saliva in the mouth.

In Chandigarh I saw this fruit growing in Government Nursery, Sector 23 and also in Haryana Raj Bhawan. Most of the fruit that belong to that era and that are now almost lost were raised from seeds. The seedling thus raised took many a year to give fruit. But now with the improvement in technology, fruits like jamun, bael, ber etc are now grafted and with that comes early bearing. It is because of this reason that some of the gardeners have started putting a few trees of different kinds, though not commercially.

Bael is another fruit that is valued for its properties. It is a good source of minerals and has tremendous medicinal properties. The fruit is very good for gastric complications and cleanse the system. The fruit are borne aplenty. In summer months, the leaves are shed and that is also the time to get fruit. The pulp of the fruit is preserved as sherbet and is a boon during hot summers. The tree has religious significance too as its leaves are offered to Lord Shiva.

There was another fruit called Khirni which we used to call 'ghirni'. It was only after I studied during my graduation that Khirni rootstock was used to graft chicku that I knew about its correct name. The fruit looked like an unripe date, only smaller in size and the fruit was astringent too when a little unripe. Otherwise it was very sweet with oval but flattened shining black seeds. The fruit was sold in the market while keeping it on a slab of ice that kept it cool. Though there are trees of khirni seen sporadically growing here and there at some places yet Old Delhi is the only place now where I see this fruit in summer season.

Apart from the lost fruits that we are discussing for the last two weeks, there are still more like loquat that are vanishing with time.

Conflict between the old and the new is going to be a clear battleground within a professional environment. Try to get over your shyness. Step forward and speak to that special someone that you have not seen for far too long. At your workplace, you will have to be calm and patient. Do not enter into any discussion, which can lead to hot arguments. Be careful, an intimacy with someone of a dubious reputation could sully your image.
