There is a wild vine Schisandra chinensis growing in the forests of northern China and far east Russia bearing a unique fruit which tastes salty, sweet, sour, spicy or pungent and bitter. The Chinese call it “wu wei zi” which literally means “five-flavoured berry”. Schisandra berries are widely used in Chinese medicine for many purposes. In Russia, it is used in commercial manufacture of juices, wines and sweets. This fruit is also cultivated in Japan and Korea.
