Fashion is the showstopper
The recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week has proved that if the clothes-line is strong, a show can be pulled off minus the frills and bling
Ashima Batish

Are you kidding us? Where is the deluge of celebrity showstoppers who overshadow fashion as soon as they step on the ramp? Where are the elaborate sets, which warrant as much attention as clothes? Wait a minute, where has the bling considered indispensable to Indian fashion gone?

In the fashion circle, this edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is touted to be better than the many last seasons. It distanced itself from distractions, presented creations that spelt trends for the spring-summer season, forwarded the cause of fashion designers and their diligence and did exactly what a fashion week is ought to do—celebrate fashion. Here is a sum up of the IFW that might set an example for future fashion weeks.

Bling at bay

Except for the use in bits and pieces in Nachiket Barve's collection, Ankyra by Proyanka Kakkar and Joy Mitra's ode to Rituparno Ghosh, the designers kept away from the bling. Cut was given preference over crystals. And prints became the best substitute for silme-sitaare. From the evergreen polka dots in collection by veteran Ashish Soni, Josh Goraya's play with random prints, Jenjum Gadi's extravagant use of the beetle prints added colour to the creations, and ensured that bling wasn't missed at all. To celebrate the hundred years of Hindi cinema, Nida Mahmood, continuing with her journey of quirk and kitch, presented prints of popular chapters of the cinema on her creations. Even for the very formal evening dresses, designers picked elements that didn't overshadow the silhouettes of the creations. Take Rabani and Rakha's collection for example. In nude shades, the creations only has volume that confirms them as evening wear. Fusion of Indian and western silhouettes give shape to designs by Pratima Pandey, which is again minus any bling.

Sportsman's spirit

Suddenly the focus has shifted to sports wear. Sportswear is on the agenda of Indian designers only because they think people want an interesting alternative to conventional segments of fashion. Pankaj and Nidhi were applauded by the fashion critics for their very sporty and chic creations in blue and white. Sweta Kapur's cropped shirts with knotted shorts were a bit bland but appropriate for the Indian summer. Gautam Gupta's collection was a heady mix of colours and cuts but sporty at the same time.

Red and blues

When Anupama Dayal and Masaba Gupta started the week with their shows, (Anupama's collection was even titled Gulabi) we thought that pink would rule the season. But surprisingly indigo came out to be the most popular colour. If indigo ruled the ramp, coral scorched it. Almost each designer presented at least one creation in indigo. And then there was the trio--Ashish, Viral and Vikrant- who presented their collection aptly titled Breed Blue: A tribute to homegrown indigo. Needless to say that the collection was in blue and white. Neons and pop colours went missing this time making way for coral and cobalts , something that was required post the two seasons of neon dominance. Rahul Mishra, Josh Goraya, Pallavi Mohan, Payal Pratap, designer couple Ankur and Priyanka Modi used different hues of blue in their respective collections. Dolly J's coral ensemble made for a perfect contrast to designers' indulgence in indigo.

Sheer pleasure

If it is spring-summer, sheer has to be a part of the menu prepared by designers. Nachiket Barve's sheer tops, Niket and Jainee's see- through skirts and maxi dresses, Priyanka Kakkar's interpretation of architecture of Morocco in sheer dresses hint at sheer will be an important element of fashion in the coming season. Even Rohit and Rahul Khanna met the expectations with their sheer and bling collection.

The show goes on

Alia Bhatt for Masaba Gupta, Raima Sen for Joy Mitra, Anil Kapoor for Ashish Soni, Pallavi Sharda for Samant Chauhan….and that's about it. Out of the 30 runaway shows at the fashion week, just four boasted of showstoppers besides the beautiful creations. It's partially due to the absence of big names from the show roster. Masaba Gupta walked the ramp for Wendell Rodricks and that again translates into raising a toast to fashion.

Last resort

Pret has conveniently bifurcated to branch out another segment—the resort wear. And if Shivan and Narresh have enrolled for the fashion week, resort wear has to be an obvious addition to the fashion week platter. It was brazen, bold and brilliant of course. Yogesh Choudhry's colour blocked swim suits fit the bill as well. Shantanu Singh and Niharika Pandey used quirky prints to make the cuts even more suitable for a resort vacation.

Welcoming the surprise visitors

Buzz is that in the up and coming episodes of the show, Yeh Hai Aashiqui that is telecast on Bindass, will have Shakti Arora of Pavitra Rishta fame and Anupriya Kapoor of Tere Liye, who will be playing the roles similar to Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

In the same episode, lead actors of the movie Shahid, Rajkumar Yadav and Harleen, will be seen playing important characters. While Rajkumar will essay the role of a lawyer, Harleen will play the role of his wife. They will be seen as the family friends of Shakti and Anupriya. Shakti's character Mayank is a simple, down to earth boy, quite like SRK's character in the movie, who falls in love and is to be wedded to Suman, a bubbly and vivacious girl. The show will be hosted by popular television actor, Vikrant Massey.

Talking style with Sharman

Sharman Joshi is a part of the recently released War Chhod Naa Yaar and has been a part of cult films like Rang De Basanti and 3 Idiots. The reticent actor talks about fashion and style.

Scent of a man

I think all men must invest in good perfumes. My favourites are Issey Miyake, Hugo Boss, Polo Green and Azarro.

Style icons

For me, they are Kabir Bedi, Amitabh Bachchan and my father-in-law Prem Chopra.

Favourite destinations

My favourite places, for shopping, are London and Paris because everyone looks so good and is well turned out. Even the men dress as well as the women.

Bare essentials

Every guy must have a black shirt, a white shirt, a pair of jeans and a great pair of formal shoes. My wardrobe is full of clothes in black, blue, white and red.

Dare to be bare
Actor Gurleen Chopra, who is home for Diwali, likes to keep her make-up to a bare minimum
Manpriya Singh

The festive glow need not follow an hour long vanity session. Nor does looking good come as easy as a make-up kit. At times it’s the hint of colour that makes a world of difference and at times, it is the lack of it.

“I personally believe in nude look. Unless it is for movies, in real life, I don’t like to put make up at all. During evenings, it is a simple look with gloss and kohl,” in Chandigarh for festive make-up tips session at Tressed Up, actor and former beauty queen Gurleen Chopra likes to keep things casual and carefree.

In sync with the festival and family time, she’s here, “all the way from Mumbai, to celebrate Diwali with my family and friends.” She adds, “I also had to be here to for the dubbing of my movie. On Diwali day, I’m just going to exchange gifts, followed by a trip to the gurudwara.”

Future plan

The debut in award winning Baghi was followed up by Hashar. Stints in one regional cinema gave way to Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films. However, what she would most like to reprise someday is the classic role of a child woman. “The character that Sridevi plays in the film Sadma would be my dream role.” Meanwhile, there’s Kirpan, an Amrik Gill production, on the floors. “The movie has romance, action, comedy, drama but there’s a very big message that’s been given to the audience through the movie. Even we didn’t know till we worked in the movie.” She adds, “I play an NRI girl who’s never been to India before.”

Though her Ajj De Ranjhe left no impact at the box-office, there’s no mistaking the force of the regional wave. “I frequently catch up on Punjabi flicks and saw Harbhajan Mann’s Haani and really loved the movie.”

Coming home

She keeps her fingers crossed for the upcoming Punjabi release, there’s a big production in Telugu cinema as well. For any regional actor, Bollywood remains the ultimate destination. Nevertheless, getting back here doesn’t compare. “Though I’d really to be in Bollywood, but working in Punjabi cinema is an unparalleled fulfillment. I don’t feel like I’m working. Punjab feels like home and so do Punjabi, that’s why I like to be here more than down South.” For once the statistics give way to sentiments.

An experience called food
Ashima Batish

If there was an examination for appetite, the one who had the least would score the maximum. But then what also matters is the centre of exam, shift it this time to Gourmet Nine, the newly opened restaurant, at The Pelican Hotel in Industrial area of Chandigarh. And even all those who swear by the diet chart wouldn’t pass without grace marks.

A joint venture by Aditya Prabhu and Shiwani Tomar, Gourmet Nine offers cuisines ranging from Indian, South coastal to pan-Asian, which of course comprises Chinese and Thai.

“Before venturing into the restaurant industry of the city, I ate at almost every eating joint around the city to study the eating habits of people here,” says Prabhu. What he deduced from his recce of restaurants is that people revisit eating joints, travel even outside the city to have food in the restaurant they develop a liking for. He thus short listed dishes for the menu, by picking up dishes from different cuisines that he thinks will make people revisit the place.

From his experience of over two decades in the food industry, he suggests that people should go for one cuisine at a time rather that ordering many. “If one plans to have Indian starters it should be followed by Indian main course only. It gives one a better idea about the food.” He has focused on the optimum use of spices, which becomes evident from the strong flavour of cinnamon in the Indian dishes served. Or, for that matter in the south coastal food as well. You will definitely find some unheard of dishes in the region in the menu. Take hari mirch and murg bhap for example, which has a subtle flavour of green chillies and coriander or cheese and pakchoy dumplings. Another starter, prawn cheung faan is a prawn filled in soft steamed rice rolls, best served with the chilly dip. For those who strictly like to monitor the calorie count, there is neer dosa served with lamb hot pot. Not a combination as such but one wouldn’t mind even ordering it even on the second visit to the restaurant.

Aditya says that the menu is divided into traditional and contemporary Indian food. “It’s time we introduced people to newer dishes but at the same time maintaining the consistency of dal makhni and fish curry.” And he delivers what he promises.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Flow with the tide
Simmi Waraich

I have no real problems; I just don't feel happy with my life in any sphere. I am single, I have no worries about money, my family is supportive and I am not working currently.

Aman, Chandigarh

Were you happy earlier? Did this start as a child and at what age? A number of things need to be considered for this. CBT or Existential psychotherapy may help you. Some people have Dysthymia, which is a low grade depression that persists over two or more years. Look around you. Notice the people in your life and people outside. Often it's the children who are happy as they live moment to moment. Many of the adults will be preoccupied with the future and with regrets and general worries. Some people are happier and more fulfilled than others. What is the difference? They are not necessarily different- maybe they just view life differently- through rose tinted glasses instead of dark gloomy glasses. If you observe your own self for the next two hours, you may find you have something we call Automatic thoughts- thoughts that pop up in our head almost all the time- they may be thoughts of- " How you may want something in your life " or " Something you didn't get in your life" Or what you expect of people etc." Start by noting these thoughts because often they are the key to identifying what makes us sad.

Try being open to new things and leaving the past behind. Write down what you think of the past and see whether you are focussing on the negatives- what would you say to a friend in a similar situation? Look at people around you- Why is the bus driver happy? Or for that matter a shopkeeper who greets you happily? What do we need to be happy?

Appreciate little things- the raindrops, the sun, and appreciate others- pay a compliment to a friend, call your family and tell them that you are thinking of them. Don't hold back.

Express gratitude for little things—the beautiful flower in the garden, the music, a good meal daily. Meet old friends and if they are not around, meet or talk to a neighbour or a colleague at least once or twice a week. Try to do a good deed for someone. Find a meaning in life.

My son has tics in his shoulders and face at times. How can I control them?

Mandeep Singh, Mohali.

Tics are rapid, repeated muscle twitches, such as eye blinking, facial grimacing, forehead wrinkling, head turning, or shoulder shrugging. Most tics last only for a second. Tics usually happen more often when a child is under stress. When a child is relaxed, he will not have as many tics. Also, tics do not occur when a child is sleeping. They are three times more common in boys than girls. Usually they change and pass off, mostly disappearing by adolescence. Avoid commenting on them. A child does not do it deliberately. If they are severe then sometimes medication is used or Habit Reversal done.

Enroute fitness

Gorgeous Mandana Karimi, who is all set to make her Bollywood debut in Vikram Bhatt's thriller Bhaag Johnny, has finally revealed her fitness secrets. She works out four times a week with weights for two days and cardio for the other two. When shooting or travelling, Mandana does twenty minutes of online-stimulated workout in her room.

"I eat healthy and eat a lot," she admits. "But I'm very active throughout the day. Moreover, I don't mind becoming a bit fuller," she winks.

What's surprising is that the shapely gal has no diet plan at all! "I've never had one," she reveals. "I'm blessed with very high metabolism. But recently, when I returned to my routine after a break, I was asked to eat chocolates only once a week."

Bananas, almonds, salmon, dark chocolate and eggs are Mandana's energy boosters. For a zero-flab diet, the girl recommends eating breakfast regularly and snacking throughout the day, as well as drinking lots of water to keep energy levels high.
