Court puts actress on notice
Chandigarh, October 15 “The sole purpose is to show her body and spread vulgarity under the garb of religious dance. The actress is using a religious slogan and picture of Lord Krishna and Radha playing Dandiya on her back thus hurting religious sentiments,” reads the petition. The pictures were published in a vernacular daily on October 8. The court has issued notice to the respondents to appear in court on January 7. The petition has been filed by advocate Arvind Thakur and spokesperson of the Vishv Hindu Parishad Vijay Singh Bhardwaj. |

Consumer forum slaps fine of
Rs 20,000 on CHB
Chandigarh, October 15 The CHB has also been directed to refund the amount of Rs19,817 towards 18 per cent interest amount along with interest at the rate of nine per cent per annum to the complainant from the date of deposit. In addition, the CHB has also been directed to pay Rs 10,000 to the complainant towards costs of litigation. The complainant Ranbir Khanna, alleged that he became a member of State Bank of India Supervising Staff Cooperative House Building Society. The objective of the Cooperative Society was to get the land from the Chandigarh Administration and then to construct the houses for its members. The administration decided to allot the land for the construction of houses and the complainant was declared eligible. The complainant deposited 10 per cent earnest money for the cost of land which was worked out at the rate of Rs 750 per square yard with the society. Thereafter, a dispute arose between the Chandigarh Administration and the SBI Society and the matter was taken to the High Court in a joint writ petition. The CHB gave an opportunity to the complainant and other members of the society to deposit the balance 15 per cent of the price along with 18 per cent interest per annum. The forum in its order stated, “The complainant was intimated that the society was taking up the matter with the Chandigarh Housing Board for refund of the interest amount deposited by the complainant. We feel that the complainant has suffered enough of mental agony and harassment.” |

Mutilated body found
Chandigarh, October 15 The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against unidentified assailants and investigations is under way. The incident came to light after a school boy noticed the body lying in a pool of blood. The boy informed his school authorities, following which the police was called.The police shifted the body to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 where it was later identified by the family members. The victim's head was smashed with boulders in order to destroy his identity. An empty bottle of soft drink and blood stained stones were also recovered from the spot. |

3 held for stealing chickens
Mohali, October 15 The accused targeted a shop and took away seven chickens and other goods, including buckets and clothes, from the shop at night on Sunday. The matter came to light when Rishi (owner), opened his shop the next day and found that all the chickens were missing. He reported the matter to the police and raised suspicion against the accused. The station house officer of the area, inspector, Jarnail Singh, said the stolen items had been recovered from the accused. “The trio has been sent to the judicial custody today after culmination of their one-day remand under the police custody,” said Jarnail Singh. |

Panchkula, October 15 The accused, Amit, has been nabbed on the complaint of Navin, a ‘safai’ contractor, of Sector 5. According to sources, the accused had asked the complainant to pay him Rs 10,000 to get the latter’s contract renewed. On Navin’s complaint, the vigilance team laid a trap today and nabbed Amit. A corruption case has been registered against Amit in this connection. |

2 minors arrested on charge of theft
Chandigarh, October 15 Today, at 1.30 pm, two juveniles were arrested along with the stolen motorcycle. Both the accused were minors and belonged to Jagatpura village in Mohali. They stated that they had stolen it from Phase XI, Mohali. The juveniles were produced in a court and were sent to juvenile home. |

GHG Khalsa get walkover against PU
Chandigarh, October 15 It is for the second consecutive year that the authorities have failed to constitute a team to participate in the championship. The competition is being organised by the Directorate of Sports, Panjab University. According to fixtures, this year, the team was scheduled to face GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, Ludhiana, on October 13. But due to no team from the Panjab University campus, the latter was given a walk-over against the rivals. Notably, the campus side earlier failed to participate in the Inter-College Competition for men (A-division), because the authorities could not find any players to play from the campus side. Also, recently the Panjab University in the history of over a decade, failed to qualify for the All India Inter-University Soccer championship after tasting defeat in their first qualifying match of the North Zone Inter-University championship. “If the campus team is not participating in the inter-college tournaments, despite having a proper infrastructure and coaching staff, the matter really needs to look into. I will go through the details and collect facts before taking any action, if required,” said Navdeep Goyal, Dean Student Welfare (DSW). In the ongoing league matches of the Panjab University Inter-College Football Championship for women, SHSM College for Women, Chella Makhsuspur, defeated GN College for Girls, Muktsar, 2-1, while GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar, blanked SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, 5-0. The matches are being held at the football grounds of the campus. Successive blows for PU Besides football, the tennis team of men’s category also failed to qualify for the All India Inter-University Championship. In their qualifying match, North Zone Inter-University Tennis Championship, Panjab University failed to overpower Punjabi University, Patiala. In their campaign, Panjab University lost one single, one reverse single and one doubles matches. The team, however, managed to win the last singles category match. Earlier, in this year’s edition, PU also failed to participate in the Inter-College Hockey Championship for men and women (A-division). The campus hockey teams are supervised by a coach from Sports Authority of India. |

In the second match, DAV College, Sector 10, blanked GN Khalsa College, Abohar, 49-36, while SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, beat BKS College, Muhar, 42-13. GMSSS-19 lift trophy
Chandigarh, October 15 In the finals of the competition, GMSSS-19 defeated Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Kaimbala, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-9. Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, defeated St Soldier School, Sector 21, 25-18, 25-12 and 25-21 to finish third in the competition. In the final of boys (U-17) category, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, attained the top three spots while in the boys (U-19) group, SGGSC-26 secured the top spot, followed by DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, and GN Khalsa Public School, Sector 30. |
Two local players qualify for international carrom event
Chandigarh, October 15 This is the first time that Chandigarh players have been selected for an international carrom event. Both will be representing the country in the event. Talib secured his berth in the boy’s section, while Sehar confirmed her entry in the women’s category of the international event. The Indian contingent was selected by the AICF after conducting proper selection trials in Vadodara, Gujarat. The trials were conducted for over a period of two days from October 11 to 12. Players selected from across the country for the international event to be held in Gurgaon from October 21 to 23 includes: Boys - Akhil Singh (Uttar Pradesh), Sony Choudhury (Assam) and Mohd.
