The first of the Mohicans
From David Beckham to the AC Milam boys, the punk hairstyle is traveling all the way from the soccer field to the film arena, and closer home to the Punjabi film industry. The hairstyle of the Mohawk tribe is now finding favour with the stylish young breed of Punjabi actors. After putting Punjabi cinema on a firm footing, these trendsetters have now focused on their hair — grew in the length, sprayed and gelled — readily sporting the Punjabi version of the Mohawk look. In fact, Punjabi actor-singer Bali Riar of Young Malang fame actually calls it the Garaari look after his character Garaari bai in the film. While Gippy Grewal religiously sports the Faux-hawk hair style, Yo Yo Honey Singh with his Fanhawk and the dashing Yuvraj Hans with his semi-Mohawk style and a tweaked moustache have set up their own stylometer. They are indeed the trendsetters of the Punjabi film industry. Catch them setting the mane matter straight.
Style
bhai A sturdy moustache, spiked hair, and a pair of sunglasses hiding those deep set of eyes, actor-singer Yuvraj Hans is one of the stylish actors of the industry, who is known for his experiment with his looks. What hardly changes is his moustache and the tuft of hair sprayed to keep them together. Yuvraj likes to change his looks as per his character in the film, but when it comes to personal style, especially his hair, the actor doesn't want to go wrong. "Not that I take extra care of my hair other than regular shampooing. I just like the idea of sporting a new style," shares the actor whose simple and romantic look was much appreciated in Yaar Anmulle and Burrah. As a kid, Yuvraj had a fascination for dressing well, "I would pick up the trendiest clothes, throw in perfume and try to sport a trendy hair style as well," says
Yuvraj.
UK import He wooed the audiences with his intense looks, and a Rayhawk hairstyle, which now has quite a few fan followers. Singer-actor Balli Riar from Chandigarh likes to be stylish, and also he prefers changing his style more than often. His hair style in Young Malang comes closer to Rayhawk hairstyle. In this style, the hair in the middle of the head is left a bit longer that the shaved sides. It looks more like a strip. Adds the actor, "I make a conscious effort to change my looks with every new project, be it a music video or a film." Balli saw this look while he was visiting the UK. "I quite liked this Mohawk kind of looks that I carried in Young Malang. The youngsters seem to have taken a liking to it," he smiles. Lot of youngsters follow his style on Youtube.
Head strong The sides of the head are shaved leaving a strip of hair on the top of the head. This defines Honey Singh's look, a fixture with him always. "I guess I was born with this hairstyle, one it is comfortable and two, I never knew it would become a style statement," he laughs.
Spikes & more Sippy Gill is yet another singer-actor who opened his innings in the Punjabi films with Putt Jattan De. When it comes to style though, the actor was born with it. "An actor has to change his looks according to the character, if you ask me personally, I love the spiky hair look," he adds. Sippy ups the style bar with his right and positive attitude.
Mane point His hairstyle has been quite an eye catcher. Actor-singer Gippy Grewal has created a statement with his tuft one time too many. From spikes to short and long Mohawks, Gippy sports his hair styles with a trendy attitude and lot of confidence. "I only sport a style I am comfortable with, be it clothes or hair or even accessories. The idea is to look cool, stylish and of course comfortable. I wouldn't do anything to my hair that looks outrageous," adds Gippy, who swings from spikes to small Mohawks as and when he wants to. The actor is growing his mane for his next film Jatt James Bond.

Lead on Lewis!
Carving an identity in music without screeching limelight is no mean feat. What's more difficult is to dabble in diverse musical influences and not restrict to one genre.
He ensured that the public didn't associate him with just either the remixes or the band Colonial Cousins he formed with Hariharan. With Leslie Lewis you never know what's in store. "When I was actually coming up with the song Tanha Sa Hoon, I had a plan on doing out a full-fledged Punjabi album. I felt the lyrics and music would have lent itself well to Punjabi music. May be sometime, in the near future, I might just do it," he shares, while in the Capital, as a part of the Bacardi Weekender tour. From advertisement jingles to his first fusion album, perhaps, there is little else left to experiment with. What makes the audience go 'once more' depends on the people he's playing for. He laughs, "It depends. Every time the crowd is different. I've even had elderly people ask me that I'm going to play the sixties music right? But yes, my friends and fan often request for Janam Samjha Karo, Pari Hoon Main, Yaaro Dosti and the like." His mention immediately conjures up the images of mid nineties, when private albums were at peak and we loved the videos playing on music channels. "On a nostalgic note that era was good. But if you look at things today, there's so much happening. I'm working on an album for Universal with a seventeen-year-old girl. There is much talent out there and possibilities of working with Gen next." Speaking of which, an EDM album is on the way with the next generation of star musicians. "I am doing an album with the children of Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Kavita Krishnamurthy and my own daughter…" He adds, while forming a metaphor of Pied Piper with all the children of musical icons following him. "None of the parents approached me for this. No parents are involved. That is the best part." The two songs have already been worked out for the album, while the rest are on their way. "Blending songs into EDM was quite a challenge. Bringing in songs without sounding like Bollywood was quite a challenge. Why can't the average mass in India listen to EDM? I was one of the early EDM kids, when computer was introduced. This genre is about the music, not songs." As for his personal play list, he'd have us believe that, "It doesn't exist." Meanwhile, there's a song dedicated to the city of Mumbai on occasion World Heart Day. "It's called Mumbai Ki Dhadkan but it is actually dedicated to the cause and the day and is for people everywhere," he signs off.

pet passion Manpriya Singh He wanted the seemingly contrasting creatures comprising a toy dog and a giant breed to come together in his own house. "We had a three-year-old pug Penny already in our house when I felt the need for a big dog. So Maxx, a Great Dane, was a surprise gift for me," shares Simar Barnala, 26, a practicing lawyer, on the sequence of his pets. That's how an imposing Great Dane and a tiny pug came together. As to how well do they stay together, he laughs, "Penny is the jealous one. When I'm playing with Maxx, she comes and sticks around. Otherwise both of them are quite friendly with each other." He adds, "Penny is an indoor dog. She stays inside most of the time and sleeps inside too." Love me, love my dog The three-year-old just had to happen to the family of 'not just dog owners' but pet lovers as well. "We had a pug before also but unfortunately, she fell into a well on the farm. That's when we were really saddened but got another pug." He adds, "My sister named her Penny and I don't know why she did so but I named Maxx after a video game." You know it's a beloved member of the family when the name of a pet is inspired by a hobby or an addiction. He shares, "We used to play this video game that had Maxx as part of its title. Just when we were looking for a name for him, somehow Maxx just sounded right." Yours faithfully Irrespective of the breed and their behaviour, what brings together a dog and a master is the universal sense of belonging. "There are a lot many great things about owning a pet but the best one is that you are never alone. It's the companionship they bring along and also the unconditional love and loyalty." Do we blame it on the breed or the species itself? "A Great Dane looks huge but is really very affectionate. They are also a very smart set of dogs. For Maxx, we didn't need a trainer." Sometimes the best things make a big sacrifice appear like a small compromise. "Maxx is one-year-old and really huge now. But he doesn't realise he is a big dog. He still comes running and trying to fit into the lap. He can pounce on you and spoil your shirts. Before going into the courts every morning, I have to avoid that." He adds, "You could have had a bad day. They don't understand and come wagging their tails. You know there's someone to receive you back home with equal enthusiasm everyday." manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Doc
Talk Using laptops on your laps can lead to skin disorder Dr Vikas Sharma The scientific research has given us a lot of modern technologically advanced gadgets for our benefits. But one needs to be aware of the correct method of their usage otherwise it can give us numerous health problems. The latest studies have found the harmful effects of these techno gadgets on skin, the largest and outermost organ of our body system. With the new generation smaller laptops, rapidly replacing the desktops, it has led to rise in the number of cases presenting with a skin disorder--laptop thigh syndrome medically a subset of ‘erythema ab igne’. This condition is a persistent stress injury of the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin caused by frequent and prolonged low level heating. People who spend long periods of time reading, studying or playing games on laptops resting on their thighs are the ones who develop this skin disorder. Though the laptop manufacturers proudly show the models in advertisements working on these machines placed on bare skin of thighs but copying these acts in real life can cost the skin a massive damage. The newer laptops having highly powerful processors on their underside fitted in a razor-thin chasis which they highlight as their beneficial feature in fact has a more harmful impact on the skin. The alarming sign is that more and more children are coming up with complaints of skin rash following the usage of laptops. In the past erythema ab igne was more commonly seen in elderly people exposed to heat but now people using laptops for long hours, even school children, college students and corporate individuals are facing this. The repetitive stress injury of the skin layers is the consequence of the heat generated by the underside of the machine which when placed for prolonged period on the thighs results in thermal build up of around 50 degrees. The persistent exposure to this thermal build up in addition to lack of ventilation causes persistent redness and pigmentation on the skin. The skin develops a mottled patch (caused by local hemostasis – stagnation of blood) which later becomes reticulated erythema (patchy striped erythema) finally leaving behind disfiguring pigmentation. So be aware of the manner in which you use your laptops and caution others who use the laptop the wrong way. Always have a barrier which can be a saviour like a cooling pad or a wooden one between your thighs and laptop. (Dr Shamra is a Chandigarh-based dermatologist) |

The guardian angel
As Siddartha had mentioned beautifully, 'Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.' And to walk the spiritual path, one needs a guide, a person who can take us through that journey. He smiles softly, touching hearts of people who look up to him. He talks as if this is the only thing you always wanted to hear.
His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, spiritual head of Drukpa Buddhists, and also the patron and founder of Live to Love, a global humanitarian organization, has been named as the Guardian of the Himalayas by the Waterkeeper Alliance of the US. Waterkeeper Alliance, founded in 1999 by environmental lawyer Robert F Kennedy Jr and several waterkeeper organizations, is committed to grassroots advocacy and an unfaltering belief that everyone has a right to clean water. It collaborates with like-minded organisations across the world and provides a way for communities to stand up for their right to clean water and for the wise and equitable use of water resources, both locally and globally. The Gyalwang Drukpa is a United Nation's Millennium Development Goal Awardee for his efforts towards the environment, as well as and clean environment is what we want to create for everyone. "A clean environment helps us breathe beautifully, inspiring clean and beautiful ideas," says Gyalwang Drukpa. The Live to Love organisation of which actor Aamir Khan is the official brand ambassador, under the patronage of the Gyalwang Drukpa, has been engaged in creating grassroots-level awareness on water conservation and glacier preservation. In 2010, Live to Love had created a Guinness World Record for most trees planted in one hour by planting over 66,000 trees under harsh conditions in Leh. In 2012, Live to Love broke their 2010 Guinness World Record by planting 99,103 trees. This was done as an environmental initiative to hold the soil together, create and catalyse water retention, and stop landslides and soil erosion. The spiritual head smiles, "Live to Love is committed to preserving the environment and creating a sustainable ecological system that ensures that we give back to the nature from which we continue to draw incessantly. With global recognition and support like these, we will continue to do our small bit towards preserving the planet for our future generations."

Skin deep
Kiehl's, a care brand and Tanvi KG, skin care and makeup expert, organised an event to spread awareness regarding the benefits of skin care. The event was attended by ladies of all age groups who got their free skin consultation from the Kiehl's experts and Tanvi together. This initiative was mainly taken to make people aware of the importance of skin care and to teach them to diagnose their skin type. The evening was interactive and educative for all
those present.
Sam, the manager at Kiehl's, shared that the century-old-company develops products that are fragrance free, gentle yet highly effective. Some of their best sellers include the Midnight Recovery concentrate and the Clearly Corrective dark spot remover, which tackle pigmentation and discolouration from the roots. In Indian climatic conditions he recommends the use of these serums because they provide the necessary hydration without excess oil. Tanvi KG, who has been teaching women about skin care for over a decade, says "Skin care is the most important aspect of beauty and in my experience women are most confident when their skin is healthy." She is a strong believer that before learning the art of makeup, women must learn how to take care of their skin because if the skin is healthy you tend to look more beautiful naturally. She also busts another myth that anti-aging products should be used once women reach their 40's. "Aging is a natural process," she says, "and keeping in mind the environmental conditions one should start using anti-aging products from 30 onwards.” — TNS

it’s rocking "However messy it is, always be in love…" read the closing lines in the video of Ayushmann Khurrana's brand new song-O Heeriye. Written and co-composed by Ayushmann with Rochak Kohli, the song O Heeriye was released under the YRF Music Label on September 14, on Ayushmann's birthday. Abhishek showers praise on Aishwarya time and again. He calls her a perfect homemaker and a great cook too. He shares, "She cooks really well... In fact she makes good deserts. More than anything else, it is the emotion and love with which you cook that matters." He added, "I am used to people whistling at my wife... see my wife then you will know why I am saying this. I have never whistled at her to woo her... I don't think it's the right thing to do. I courted her through my gesture, emotions and words." With her last film Aashiqui, Shraddha Kapoor finally managed to create her own space in Bollywood. However, despite her newfound fame, her screen idol Aamir Khan apparently didn’t have the time for more than six months. After aggressively chasing Aamir for half a year, Shraddha finally received a call from the star’s manager. A friend of the actress says, “Shraddha is a big fan of Aamir and was looking forward to have a chit- chat with him. If not a proper meet, she was even ready to talk to him inside an elevator. Aamir’s manager assured her that the star would meet her soon.” Finally, while Aamir was shooting for Dhoom 3 at a suburban studio, his manager summoned Shraddha.

“I will appear on Bigg Boss’s finale in slimmer shape”
Filmmaker Rajat Rawail is out of the Bigg Boss's house and he is glad to be going back home. Rajat, who suffered from illness due to lack of food, talks about his stay in Bigg Boss and all that he learnt while he was a part of the show.
Why were you keeping unwell in the house? In the first week, I was feeling fine and was joking around, but in the second week when I wished to see my daughter, I slipped into depression and my health began to deteriorate. If you were unable to sleep properly and had health issues, why would you participate in a reality show? I thought I could pull it off. Usually, when I work I am fine. I eat well and
move around a lot. But staying in one house and going through the whole show I learnt a lot. What have you learnt? I have learnt the value of things, people, and food. Also, I did learnt quite a lot about myself. Earlier I used to think that I could do anything but that's not the case, and I think that I shouldn't take my health or weight issues lightly. I have to work on myself and get in better shape.
I am going to treat my sleep problem. I will appear on the show's finale in a slimmer shape. Do you think it is tough to be a part of Bigg Boss, as you don't get enough to eat or sleep? That is the rule of the game to work over food and sleep. You have to earn it. There are tasks and rewards and all of them exert pressures on the contestant. Do you regret doing the show? No really, but I do regret not performing well. |
